Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce celebrates 100 years of history By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Nothing was going to stop the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce from celebrating 100 years of doing business. The chamber Tuesday night hosted a virtual Centennial Celebration. The theme of this year’s celebration was “History Has Its Eyes on You.” The virtual program led viewers on a stroll down memory lane by sharing the history of the chamber and many of its businesses in Seguin. Many historical tidbits were also shared and even discovered by those who took part in a fun trivia quiz along the way. The virtual webinar was the alternative to the chamber’s annual awards banquet held normally at the Seguin Coliseum. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, chamber officials say the virtual awards program was the chamber’s best option in celebrating its 100-year anniversary and recognizing those who have made an impact in the business community over the past year.
Among the first to be recognized was Charles Villeneuve. Villeneuve was named Ambassador of the Year. Villeneuve, who has served as an ambassador for 30 years, says he looks forward to serving even more years. “I want to thank all my fellow ambassadors for this honor. I appreciate your work for the ambassador corps with the chamber and look forward to many more years as being an ambassador,” said Villeneuve. Next on the list was this year’s Servant Leadership Award. That award went to Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez says he is proud to accept the award and recognizes his entire team who together have helped to make a difference in the lives of local children.
“On behalf of the Seguin Independent School District, I would like to accept this award from the Seguin Chamber, and I would also like to share my absolute appreciation for the Seguin Chamber and everything they do for the school district and our community,” said Gutierrez. See 100 YEARS, Page 3

100 YEARS continued from Page 1 Also recognized for sharing a passion for education is the Seguin Economic Development Corporation. The SEDC was honored with this year’s Champion for Education Award. Accepting the award on the SEDC’s behalf was Executive Director Josh Schneuker. “On behalf of the Seguin EDC staff and board of directors, I want to thank the chamber for awarding us with the Champion for Education Award. Ensuring that we have a strong talent pipeline is a top priority for the Seguin EDC and in order to do that, we must work with many of our partners within the community including our local school districts to meet the needs of businesses. I again thank the chamber for presenting us with this award and we look forward to working with them to continue to address the talent pipeline needs for our community and look forward to hopefully celebrating another hundred years with them,” said Schneuker. Awarded with the chamber’s Business Excellence Award was Seguin’s HEB. Chamber officials say HEB was recognized for its adaptability to perpetual change, for their resilience to rise again quickly after natural disasters (which locally included two fires) and for their excellent customer service and commitment to the community during the pandemic. Acknowledging the award on the grocery store’s behalf were local partners Caitylyn and Jessica. Also garnering a Business Excellence Award was the 1916 Bar & Bistro at the Aumont. The business was noted for its resilience and ability to realign resources to pivot to different business models that address the newest restrictions enforced against bars and restaurants throughout this pandemic. Sharing his excitement for the award was Owner Gregg Woodall.

staff and all the kindred spirits who have kind of helped us through these tough times. Once again, stay strong Seguin,” said Woodall. The chamber during its virtual awards celebration also unveiled its first ever Woman of Influence Award. The chamber says the award was to be presented to a woman dedicated to serving her community by accepting and excelling at leadership roles in many areas. Honored to have been named the first recipient of this award was Kasie Tankersley. “Thank you so much for this recognition. I want to thank the Seguin Chamber of Commerce as well as the board of directors. I am so honored to be recognized this evening and I’m so privileged to work for GVEC and to represent GVEC as the community relations rep and to be a part of this great Seguin community,” said Tankersley. Applauding the efforts of new local professionals was also the idea behind the chamber’s Rising Star Young Professional of the Year Award. Presented with this year’s award was Chelsea Roberts who was recognized for her leadership with the chamber’s Seguin Young Professionals group. “Thank you, Seguin Chamber of Commerce, for honoring me with the Young Professional of the Year Award. I appreciate this honor and I’m excited to see what the future holds for the Young Professionals of Seguin. Thank you,” said Roberts. A pair of Excellence in Community Service awards was also presented during Tuesday’s centennial celebration via webinar. The first to be recognized was Robert Haynes, the CEO of Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. Chamber officials say in addition to maintaining his team of healthcare professionals, Haynes has also led the safety efforts among manufacturers, school districts and other collective community organizations throughout this pandemic. Haynes says he
shares the award with all the true heroes at GRMC. “On behalf of Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and its 850 employees, I accept this award and thank you very much,” said Haynes. Also presented with an Excellence in Community Service Award was Outgoing Chamber Chairman Doug Parker. Parker, owner of Parker’s Pharmacy, says he is humbled for the recognition. “This is quite an honor for me to be a corecipient of the Community Service Award, I’ve been blessed by so many things, but this is very humbling and this past year, 2020, to serve as chair of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce and now to be honored in this way as a co-recipient of the Community Service Award along with my good friend Robert Haynes of Guadalupe Regional Medical Center - our relationship goes back some almost 30 years. With Guadalupe Regional Hospital, it’s been a wonderful relationship. I’m very proud of it but I can only say thank you to the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce for this high high honor. I am deeply honored. Thank you,” said Parker. Also recognized for his contributions was former Seguin Mayor Don Keil. Keil was presented with this year’s Chairman’s Award for Forward Thinking Leadership. This year’s virtual centennial celebration also included words from several business and manufacturing leaders such as – but not limited to -- Caterpillar, CMC Steel, First United Bank, Ascot’s Custom Travel, Texas Lutheran University and the Koehler Company. A guest appearance and a few words were also made by Chet Garner, of The Day Tripper. Chamber officials say the video of the chamber celebration and awards program will be made available soon on YouTube. Commemorative Seguin Chamber 100 Anniversary magazines are also available for pickup at the chamber office located at 116 N. Camp St.

Fourth quarter surge fuels Seguin girls in road win over Lehman
(Kyle) - Seguin girls basketball used a 14-4 run in the fourth quarter and a stingy defensive effort to complete a two-game regular season sweep of Kyle-Lehman on Tuesday with a 39-24 win in in the Lobos’ home gym. The Matadors led 17-7 at halftime, but Lehman won the third quarter 13-8 to make it a five-point game, 25-20, going into the fourth quarter. Seguin dominated the final period and pushed the lead to 18 points before settling for the 15-point win. It was the first game back from a two-week quarantine for Seguin head coach Angela Brittain and sophomore point guard Reese Brittin. The coach complimented her team’s steady improvement while dealing with the many obstacles of a disjointed season. “It’s hard to get into a routine this year,” Brittain said. “Every time I feel like we’re doing great things and we’re where we need to be, Covid happens, and then we have to go to quarantine and all kinds of stuff, so definitely hard to get on a routine. But tonight, I think it’s just finally clicking for them to be able to change defenses quickly, and playing man good, and doing all of those little things that we’ve been working hard on for the last two years. To see it actually coming alive now, I’m super impressed with them.” Senior guard Liv Hernandez led all scorers with 14 points, 10 in the second half. Ashlie Aguilar added 12 points, including a three to spark Seguin’s fourth quarter run. Taylor Bode chipped in with six points, Nayla Harris four, Tresalyn Roberts two, and Audriana Rodriguez one. Lehman’s interior defense made it tough for the All-District post Roberts to find scoring opportunities inside, and Brittain, the All-District point guard, spent the evening shaking off the rust of not playing for two weeks. Coach Brittain was pleased to see other players handle the scoring load. “I think that’s what’s really great about this team is whenever we have cold nights for some girls, other girls step up, so that’s been a big help,” Brittain said. “It’s nice when everybody is a shooter at some point, and we don’t just have to rely on just our post players, or just one girl, or whatever the case may be, so it was good to see Ashlie and Liv having big games tonight.” The win moves Seguin to 4-5 in district play, 7-10 overall. The Matadors continue the 26-5A schedule Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. home game against Dripping Springs in the Student Activity Center Gym on the SHS campus.

June 09, 1938 - January 06, 2021
Late Wednesday morning, January 6, 2021, while at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Eugene Richard Haecker passed away and went to be with our Lord God. Eugene was the first born of two children, born on June 9, 1938 in Seguin, TX. He grew up and spent his formative years in Seguin. He was a star football player while at Seguin High School and went on to play football at North Texas State University in Denton, TX. After graduating, he entered the Air Force in 1961 as a commissioned officer serving the Strategic Air Command at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. In 1962, he married his sweetheart Sandra Jahns. While on their honeymoon, he was recalled to active duty at the dawn of the Cuban Missile Crisis. During these tense days, he continued his duty of inspecting Minute Man missile silos for battle-alert readiness. Later that fall, his new bride joined him in South Dakota where he continued his deployment and welcomed his first son Keith. Upon his resignation from the service in 1964, his family moved to Denton, TX. Tragically, he lost his son Keith from leukemia at the age of three, dying only an hour after his newborn daughter Lisa had arrived home with her mother from the hospital. While in Denton, Eugene worked several different jobs before finding his new career in commercial insurance and an underwriter. During his years in Denton, he was also able to welcome the birth of his third child, Matthew. Three years later, his work led him to nearby Oklahoma, where they lived in Bethany. While there, he rejoined the Air Force as a reservist and rose to the rank of captain. In 1980, life and work led to an opportunity to relocate himself and his family back to Texas in San Antonio. This move afforded him to not only be back in the state he loved most but also allowed him to be near

Additionally, it also allowed him more opportunities to hunt and fish - two of his favorite pastimes. Besides the great outdoors, he also loved to watch and listen to football and basketball games at every afforded opportunity. He loved his wife, children and grandkids dearly and was always eager to know the latest happenings. He loved a good joke, cooking something on the grill and was often noticed peering into the distance deep in his own thoughts.
