Habitat for Humanity looking for potential lots for sale By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
are meeting over Zoom right now and so, we definitely have a need for that to serving on our fundraising committee or our family selection committee -- any of those things. There’s plenty of opportunities just to touch base with us. If your interest lies in building, then that’s great or if it’s in retail, then come volunteer at our store or if it is family services, maybe a good option would be to serve on our family selection committee and so there’s plenty of different options to get involved with us,” said Zwicke.
(Seguin) -- Before it can pull out its toolbox, the Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity Program must first find some property in which to build on. In fact, the non-profit organization is on the search for a handful of properties for its building schedule for 2021. Executive Director Madeline Zwicke says she hopes that anyone who knows of a lot for sale will point them in the right direction. “Buildable lots are our greatest need right now and we are willing to purchase those lots. In the past, we’ve had some donated or have been given to us as a gift in-kind but we are also willing to purchase the lot if they are in our budget and we are flexible on that, but we are definitely looking for buildable lots. They have to have a minimum of 50 feet wide by 100 feet of depth and we are looking in Seguin right now so if anyone knows of any lots available or if you have a lot that you are interested in selling to us, they
can contact us at our office,” said Zwicke. Zwicke says the homebuilding program has continued with plenty of steam even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. She says the need for homes is great and the group continues to do what it can for local families. “We are looking at purchasing three lots minimum right now for 2021. We currently own two lots. One of
them being at 427 Reiley Road. We are about to start building and then we are needing some variances and replot work done on the other lot that we own so we are wanting to build three homes in 2021 so we need to purchase at least three lots in order to keep moving forward,” said Zwicke. Zwicke says support from the community continues to be the driving force in not only building a home but also making sure that the process of dedicating multiple
homes each year goes smoothly. She says when it comes to Habitat for Humanity, there are all sorts of ways to help. “If they can give financially or even just volunteering. With COVID, it’s been hard to continue building but we are taking all of the precautions. We are limiting our build site. We are requiring masks so even if it looks like volunteering or giving financially, or even serving on a committee. All of our committees

Again, anyone with leads on potential building lots or properties in Seguin is asked to call the Habitat office at 830-401-0422. Properties across Guadalupe County are also always needed. Habitat volunteers on Saturday, Jan. 23 are also planning for their 32nd home dedication for the Rodriguez Family. This will be the first time that volunteers will build a five-bedroom home for a deserving family. The dedication gets underway at 10 a.m. at the homesite located at 725 Shannon Ave.

Woman continues her passion for providing hospice care after returning home to Seguin By Cindy AguirreHerrera
(Seguin) -- A woman’s decision to return home to care and be closer to her parents has led to the establishment of a whole new hospice care program for residents in the Seguin and surrounding area. Ana Ramirez-Cardosa, the executive director for Gifted Hearts Hospice in Seguin, shares more about the area’s newest hospice and palliative care program. Ramirez-Cardosa, says while helping to open up a hospice program down South, she was befriended by a doctor who later sought her help to begin a hospice program of his own. “Once the company was up and running, I decided to come back to Seguin to be closer to my parents and then the doctor always told me, one day, I’m going to open up my own hospice. I was like, okay. Before he opened up his own hospice, he opened up an ER and an urgent care in New Braunfels and then after that was up and running, he calls me just out of the blue and asked me what I was doing, and I told him I was still working for hospice. That is my passion. He said come talk to me, let’s talk about opening that hospice,” said Ramirez-Cardosa. “We kind of started doing

our homework and saw that these small little towns that are rural areas were underserved and we said, let’s do it in Seguin,” said Ramirez-Cardosa.
That vision with Medical Director Dr. Cyril OwusuBoakye ultimately led to the creation of Gifted Hearts Hospice. Although the pandemic has proved challenging, RamirezCardosa says it has not stopped the business from rolling out the care that their patients and families deserve. “We are one company, but we offer hospice and we offer the palliative care.
It’s a program that we now have and of course, we are the one and only pro-life hospice in this area. The pro-life hospice is where we increase the quality of life as much as we can while they maintain their dignity and then provide the comfort and symptom control -just depending on what the patient is on hospice for. Say for instance, a patient has cancer and then all of sudden now, they have high blood pressure. Well, they come on the hospice for cancer but with high blood pressure, our doctor is going to say okay, well we need to give them some
medication to control their blood pressure instead of just saying well the patient is on hospice. We try to prolong as much as we can as long as the patient is comfortable,” said Ramirez-Cardosa. As the executive director, Ramirez-Cardosa says she also makes it her personal obligation to reach out to the family members and caretakers. She says they are just as important in this journey as anyone. She says the staff stands by its motto “Live Until You Leave.” Since many programs
hospice don’t
stretch into the rural communities, RamirezCardosa says she is proud that Gifted Hearts Hospice makes a commitment to serve those who need them. “I love it for the reason that I know a lot of people here in these little, small towns and to know that we are here for them and to take care of them if they need hospice until the end of life,” said Ramirez-Cardosa. Gifted Hearts is located at 1418 N. Austin St. Suite 12. The office can be reached by calling 830-715-9299.

Seguin encouraged to remember, observe the messages of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
Although this year’s Seguin’s MLK Day Celebration was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seguin Daily News wanted to feature a look back at the many years of the downtown celebration. A series of events, each year, are held over a four-day weekend culminating with the Freedom March which begins in downtown Seguin and travels to Texas Lutheran University. Committee members say they are hoping to return stronger in 2022.

Biden Vows To Revamp Vaccine Distribution
(Wilmington, DE) -- President-elect Joe Biden wants to revamp the way coronavirus vaccines are given out. He called the rollout of two vaccines a dismal failure so far. This week, he’ll lay out his new vaccination plan that will correct the course of the distribution. His goal is getting 100-million people vaccinated in his first 100 days in office. He called it one of the most challenging efforts taken on by this nation.
Over 1.3M People Have Both Doses Of COVID Vaccine
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is providing new details on the distribution of the coronavirus vaccine. The health agency says over one-point-three million Americans have received two doses of the vaccine. A total of nine-point-seven million people have received at least one shot. A majority of the shots have come from Pfizer and BioNTech, which started going out to states a week ahead of Moderna’s. More than 30-million doses have been distributed across the country.
