Morales to return to the position of Deputy Superintendent
Navarro ISD launches search for new district leader
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD has chosen to move forward with an official search for its next school superintendent. On Monday, the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the launch of a superintendent search process. That move comes in response to the district’s other decision to return current Acting Superintendent Luke Morales to his role as Deputy Superintendent.
Navarro Board President Renee Rehfeld says the board just felt it was time that the district move in a new direction.
“The school board took action to open search for superintend. Last summer, we got Mr. Morales as the acting superintendent and
gave him some specific goals and initiatives to work on and at this time, we feel like it’s the best interest of the district of us to move forward with opening a search, to look for experience in the challenges that we are currently facing with the growth, the bond, curriculum and so forth,” said Rehfeld.
Rehfeld says the plan is for
Morales to continue the role of acting superintendent until some assistance is received from the outside.
“For right now, he is still acting superintendent. We also took action to bring in a part-time experienced superintendent that would help Mr. Morales and our goal would be to continue to have him work with the district to continue as the deputy superintendent and we know how valuable he is to not only the Navarro District but also the community and so our goal would be to have this experienced superintentht that only does interim work come in and help with some of the areas where we... Just in time for TAX season
Guadalupe County gets drive-through project update
Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Guadalupe County's new tax office drive-through is inching closer to operation. During Tuesday's commissioner's court meeting, the Koehler Company was on hand to provide the latest update for the double drive-through system being constructed on the existing building's south side.
Wrapping up just in time for tax season, Jason Beck, the job site superintendent for the Koehler Company, says the drive-through is nearing completion and will allow the county to better handle property tax and motor vehicle business.
"We are about 95 percent complete. Once, we put the soffit panels on which would be next week and stripe – right now, that's scheduled for the 30th, -- we could
be able to get moved up a little bit. Then, we will be down to just some punch items. But the two tube systems right now are ready to go. They are operational and ready to go," said Beck.
Chiming in on the work on behalf of his constituents and staff was Daryl John, Guadalupe County tax assessor-collector. John says he wants to ensure everything is just right before giving the drivethrough the green light.
"We are going to wait until construction is 100 percent and then once that's done and we get our people trained on the equipment of how to use it, get all the computers in (and) we will be servicing the DVM also so we are waiting for the state to put in their part also --- as
soon as that's done and operational, we will let you know exactly what day we will open," said John.
Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says it's more than the size of the project that gets him excited. He says it's about the benefits that it will have for all residents of Guadalupe County.
"Good job everybody. I know we've talked about this for a long time. The potential of possibly putting in a drive through, once we did the service center, the Riedel building (in Schertz) and saw the benefit and heard the positive feedback of that drive through access by some, I think that really spurred that conversation and let us go 'let's really look at this in Seguin....' Remembering the life of Roscoe Gonzales
Producing the positive in Seguin
(Seguin) -- There were years where I spent a lot of time with my buddy, Roscoe Gonzales -- late nights at his makeshift television studios as he worked on projects of all sorts. His video production work in Seguin really started with recording services for Second Baptist Church and having those played back on the cable access channels. The church services were important to him, but Roscoe wanted to do something more -- something maybe for the children in Seguin. Roscoe had this big idea to create a television show featuring local kids doing great things. It was all tilted in a positive direction. The production values were not always super high, but this self-taught videographer had an idea, and he would make it happen. Several people, like me, volunteered to help, but he was the
driving force behind all Clubhouse Productions features. The program started taping at the church owned by the Baptist Ministers Union. The church is the only building standing at what once was Guadalupe College -- a Black college located here in Seguin off Highway 90. These kids who participated in Clubhouse got to experience all sorts of things, like an aviation simulator, but more importantly -- they got to share their voices, ideas, and talents with the rest of the world. This all happened before social media was a thing, and it became easy to share videos with the world. Roscoe had that vision, and he made it happen.
Roscoe was also instrumental in capturing each MLK Day celebration in Seguin. Roscoe would videotape everything from the
MLK Freedom March to the dinner and fashion shows. If it was part of Seguin's celebration of Dr. King, you can bet that Roscoe was there with his cameras.
He forever offered his services at Second Baptist Church. Roscoe was also a longtime deacon there. He loved his church and his church family. His faith led him to what may be one of his most memorable productions. Roscoe wanted to produce a Gospel album featuring local talent. He got with his brother-from-another-mother, Lupe Gonzales, to work this out. If Lupe's name sounds familiar, it should. Lupe, who's not related to Roscoe, was one of the famous Gonzales brothers from Seguin, who made up the Tejano super band Tierra Tejana. Roscoe, pg. 4

Seguin’s
A Special Reflection by Darren Dunn
Morales, continued.
“...need more knowledge and experience,” said Rehfeld.
Morales was initially put into the position after the resignation of former School Superintendent Wendi Russell in March of 2022.
Helping the district with its search will be consultant Walsh Gallegoes PC. Rehfeld says the criteria of what they are looking for has already been submitted. She says now, they await the process.
“So, our goal is for this search to get launched probably today or tomorrow quite frankly and it will be out and posted for a month and then the applications
will come in and our goal is that we will do interviews and we will have this whole timeline posted on the website probably I’m hoping this week. We will actually go through all of the applicants I think as early as March 5. That will be the first time to see actually who has applied but our goal will be to have a finalist named I believe in April,” said Rehfeld.
Despite the leadership changes, Rehfeld says the school board is committed to ensuring the very best for its students.
“I think it’s important to know that the school board works hard to make
the best decisions possible for the students the Navarro School District and we want Mr.Morales and this part-time superintendent to work in tandem to compliment each other, to have experience and knowledge and the strengths that hopefully both of them will bring to the district to put us in a good position for whoever the next superintendent is going to be to take over and lead our district forward,” said Rehfeld. District officials say although they have zeroed in on a potential part-time superintendent, that candidate will still have to come before the board for final approval.
Roscoe, continued.
Tierra Tejana is internationally known and is a longtime member of the Tejano Music Hall of Fame. Lupe, Roscoe, and many others, including professional Gospel recording artist John Harding, all came together one evening at First Baptist Church to record the album "Reaching Out To You."
It was an amazing feat. Not just the work that went into recording a live album but also all the post-production work that went into the final product. It's still one of my favorite Gospel albums. Just a couple of months ago, Roscoe gave me another copy of it when my old copy went missing.
He was a force for so many good things. That includes putting together an amazing video project that helped to tell Seguin's story after the flood of 1998. Roscoe worked closely with producer Janice Jarutowicz, a Seguinite who had worked on the television show COPS. The pair got Lupe and Seguin music legend Dottsy Dwyer to perform the music along with the video feature. It all ended with a live music performance, including a community choir at the Coliseum. It still all gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Yeah, Roscoe did that!
Roscoe's faith was really the essence of his being. His faith led him to look for the best in people, even
Tax, continued.
Like you said, it's not a giant project but a huge positive impact for the people that cannot get out of their vehicle. It promotes efficiency for employees inside the department. I was worried about the trees and some of the other issues, parking and access and wider spaces --- all those little things kind of add up to be kind of complicated but it's come together beautifully. It looks really nice, and I think people are going to enjoy it and I think it's going to work for a long time," said Kutscher.
The project officially began in October. The county building is located at 307 W. Court Street.
when it wasn't always on display. I recall once, many years ago, Roscoe convinced me that I needed to help him with a private job. He was good at convincing people to help him with things (usually at the last minute). This was a gig to record some band that was playing at some dive bar in Canyon Lake. We were probably the only Black faces in the crowd. That's not totally unusual, so I shrugged it off and took my place behind the camera. After the band's first set, I looked up and noticed a bunch of signs and other items tacked up to the ceiling. One of the signs was an advertisement for the "National White Alliance," which included a phone number. I was immediately ready to go. I pointed it out to Roscoe, and in typical fashion, he just shook his head and said he would finish the job. He got me to settle down. We finished the job and then went home.
Roscoe was a gentle giant. He was a very big man, but what loomed larger than his physical presence was his heart. He was always kind and caring. He did a lot for Seguin. Some of those things may have been forgotten, but we should not forget Roscoe and all that he meant to so many of us during his 69 years on this Earth. Thank you, Brother Roscoe.
A memorial service for my friend will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 28, at Second Baptist Church on Guadalupe Street.

COVID Concerns As Millions To Travel For Lunar New Year
(Beijing) -- Millions across China are able to travel home for Lunar New Year for the first time in three years. The two-week celebration begins today and is the biggest holiday of the year in China. Travel has been restricted across China for the past three years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but those restrictions were lifted at the end of 2022. Officials predict over two-billion trips will be made in China over the holidays, which could lead to a resurgence of COVID infections.
Majority Of Americans Still Say Gov. Should Ensure Healthcare
(Washington, DC) -- A majority of adults in the U.S. say the government should ensure that all Americans have healthcare. That’s according to a new survey by Gallup, which found 57-percent of respondents were in support. However, the same data shows 53-percent say they want the system based on private insurance. The survey also found that responses fell sharply along party lines with 72-percent of Democrats in favor of a government-run system, versus just 13-percent of Republicans. Overall, Americans continue to have a nuanced view of the healthcare system -- most say the government is responsible for making sure all citizens have coverage, but prefer that it was funded privately.
Justice Dept Launches Abbott Labs Probe
(Washington, DC) -- The Justice Department is conducting a formal investigation into Abbott Laboratories nearly a year after the baby formula shortage. An Abbott spokesperson said the company is fully cooperating in the probe. The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday investigators are focusing on Abbott’s plant in Sturgis, Michigan. Abbott shut down production at the huge plant last February after infants who consumed formula made there became sick. The closure led to a nationwide shortage of infant formula.
FDA Rejects Quick Approval Of Eli Lilly’s Alzheimer’s Drug
(Washington, DC) -- The Food and Drug Administration will not grant accelerated approval for an experimental Alzheimer’s drug. The agency rejected Eli Lilly’s application for quick approval of the drug donanemab. That’s due to the limited number of patients who stayed on the drug for at least 12 months. The treatment has shown significant promise in previous studies. The drug maker says it plans to file Phase 3 clinical trial data later this year for traditional FDA approval.
