Area schools cancel classes for second day in a row

Seguin ISD looks to resume with intercession schedule for the remainder of the week

(Seguin) – The wintery mix weather has given students and staff another day off. Classes have been cancelled for area school districts including Seguin, Navarro, and Marion ISDs. Other schools such as St. James Catholic School and Lifegate Christian School have also chosen to shut down for the day. Meanwhile, district officials continue to keep an eye on the forecast for the remainder of this week.

The Seguin ISD, however, is optimistic that scheduled intercession classes will be able to begin on Thursday. Prior to this week’s forced cancellation, the majority of students in the Seguin ISD were already off for intercession. Intercession is an allotted three days in which teachers are given the chance to engage more closely with students needing a little more help. Classes, pg. 3

City of Seguin, Guadalupe County offices closed

(Seguin) – You might not want to plan on doing any city or county business.

After monitoring weather conditions and speaking with the National Weather Service, both the city of Seguin and Guadalupe County on Tuesday decided to shut down its offices for today.

They say all non-emergency city and county offices will be closed.

Police, fire and other emergency services, of course, will still be in operation as always. Garbage and recycling routes in the city of Seguin will also not be collected today. Those collections will operate the next day pushing the schedule one day back until the weekend.

County offices will open on Thursday. City offices will also resume operation at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Families encouraged to attend Seguin ISD Safety Summit

(Seguin) – Despite the chaos and cancellation of classes this week, the Seguin ISD says an important community presentation is still on schedule for Thursday night. Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says district families and the Seguin community are encouraged to make plans for its Safety Summit on Thursday evening at Seguin High School.

In continuing that community engagement piece that they started over the summer with the safety task force, Hoffmann says this event will serve as a follow up event.

“This event is for students, families and community members to come out and learn more about safety within schools as well as be able to experience and talk with some of the organizations and businesses that will be there to provide resources to the community,” said Hoffmann.

Hoffmann says the event will be an evening of education and resource sharing. He says in addition to a guest speaker, there will be a pair of presentations for both adults and students.

“The main component of the event will be a guest speaker from the David Legacy Foundation. This I individual will talk about the harmful effects of bullying and cyber bullying and during that time, we will have a separate age-appropriate presentation for students who are in grades k-5 in the Seguin High School library. We will also have presentations on the harmful effects of vaping and like I said, we will have several booths set up where attendees can visit with these organizations to learn more about mental health, suicide, substance abuse, things of that nature. Again, trying to provide that community support for our families and community and asking folks to come out, just learn more and become better educated and we feel like an event like this is going to help anybody who is able to attend,” said Hoffmann.

“Safety has been a priority for public schools for forever and really that focus intensified over the last few years as public schools have seen acts of violence in and around the school and at Seguin ISD, that focus is no different. We feel we have improved safety components at our campuses over the years with technology cameras, safety vestibules, rapid ID systems and building relationships with Seguin, Fire, EMS, Police as well as the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Department and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office and the safety summit that we had over the summer, we can take that a step further with the community’s focus on safety in our schools as well. With Bond 2022, we saw that pass and $15 million of that is earmarked for safety and security which we will see this spring with perimeter fencing going up around many of our campuses,” said Hoffmann.

The Seguin ISD Safety Summit will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school campus. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. Door prizes and refreshments will be made available.

(New Braunfels) – Grab your resumes. The Cibolo Economic Development Corporation (CEDC), the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce (GNBCC), the Schertz Economic Development Corporation (Schertz EDC) and the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (Seguin EDC) are partnering to host the first Regional Job Fair of 2023.

The event is scheduled to take place Thursday at the McKenna Events Center, located at 801 W. San Antonio St., New Braunfels from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This event is free to the public and will feature over 50 employers who are ready to hire for immediate job openings across multiple industries and skills. This is the first Regional Job Fair to include neighboring community Cibolo.

Our regional partnership is committed to supporting economic growth in the region by bringing employers and job seekers together multiple times throughout the year. Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says while it might be easier to ignore the intercession invitation because of the cold weather, the district wants to remind families on why it is so important that students attend their respective schools these next two days.

“Seguin ISD campuses will offer intercession on

talented individuals with our great local companies, fostering new partnerships and driving economic development in our region.” said Michele Boggs, vice president of economic development at the New Braunfels Chamber.

Job seekers can expect to find hundreds of openings in entry, intermediate and advancedlevel positions in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, government, non-profit administration, tech, entertainment, public education, and more.

“Participating with our economic development partners in a coordinated job fair not only underscores the impressive mixture of employers that contribute to the economic health and opportunities of our cities, but also highlights the talent pool of individuals with

diverse experiences and skills that set up our region for long[1]term success.” said Kelsee Jordan Lee, economic development director for the city of Cibolo.

Organizers say this regional effort among Cibolo, New Braunfels, Schertz and Seguin gives job seekers and employers the opportunity to connect and engage as exciting new positions become available in the area.

Business casual attire is recommended for job seekers who plan to attend along with multiple copies of their updated resumes.

It’s a good opportunity for them to kind of help make up these days that we are missing now and even looking back

at the COVID gaps that we have experienced over the years. So, we certainly encourage those families to send their children to school if they have received that opportunity invitation to attend intercession Thursday and Friday,” said Hoffmann.

District officials say should they again decide to cancel classes, then a decision will be made late today or first thing Thursday morning.

(Seguin) -- Averaging a near double-double with 13.5 points and 9.0 rebounds a game in SCAC play last week, Texas Lutheran freshman forward Davi’Yanna Jones (San Antonio/ Stevens) grabbed her first career SCAC Player of the Week honor, the conference office announced Monday. Jones set a career-high with 14 points against Centenary on Sunday, going 5-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line while grabbing seven rebounds and recording two steals. In the Bulldogs 61-54 loss to St. Thomas on Friday, she scored a then career-high 13 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for her first collegiate doubledouble in addition to a career-high five steals on the night.The San Antonio native shot 52.6 percent from the field while grabbing 9.0 rebounds per game along with 3.5 steals. Jones has scored in double-figures in three of her last

four games, averaging 12 points and 6.3 boards a contest while shooting 53.6 percent from the field in that span.

Her efforts over the last two weeks have helped the Bulldogs go 3-1 over the last two weeks. Jones is the first Bulldog to earn weekly honors this season.

Seliah Lena Taylor, age 94 of Seguin went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 28, 2023. Seliah was born November 11, 1928 in Seguin, Texas to Garfield and Seliah L. (Garcia) Collins.

At an early age she confessed to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and became a member of Second Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. J.M. Carr. Seliah was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church for 83 years.

Seliah was reared in Seguin and attended Ball High School. She worked at Gary Job Corps in San Marcos and retired from there after 16 years of dedicated work in the Security Department. Seliah also worked for Seguin ISD as a lunch monitor and crossing guard.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Eugene Taylor; son, Garfield Eugene Taylor and brother, Ernest Eugene Collins.

Seliah is survived by three loving daughters, Carolyn J. Sutton (Willis), Mary Ann Green (Gerald) and Lena L. Lewis (Jerry); sister, Laura E. Johnson; grandchildren, Thomas A. Gipson, Jr. (Karen), Tnisha A. Sutton, Taylor M. Green and Taylor N. Black; great-grandchildren, Thomas A. Gipson, III (Taylor), Trevis A. Gipson, Ayanna A. Lavalais, Tyler A. Gipson; great-great-grandchildren, Thomas A. Gipson, IV, Tobias J. Gipson and baby girl Gipson on the way; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family.

Visitation will be Friday, February 3, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral Services will be Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church. A private interment will be held at a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Allen Gipson Jr, Trevis Allen Gipson, Jhoquez Huff, Gerald Green, Sr, Joshua Sparks, Courtland Griffin, Michael Johnson and James Babeaux. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tyler Allen Gipson, Thomas Allen Gipson, III, Jerry Lewis, Willis Sutton, Alvoyd Wilson, Jr. and Ron Griffen.

Benno Luensmann, 88, passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2023.

Benno was born August 7, 1934 to Otto Sr. and Alma (Bielke) Luensmann in Zuehl, Texas. He was the eighth of ten children born on a 75-acre family farm that supported the entire family. Life was difficult and money was scarce during his childhood but those conditions helped mold his life-long philosophy of hard work and determination as well as the value of family, church and community.

He married Shirley Ann Drzymalla on January 26, 1957. He and Shirley started life together with their love for each other, a Master’s degree in Education and a strong determination to succeed. With a lifetime of practical experience in agriculture and degrees in Animal Husbandry and Education, he taught Agriculture at Texas Lutheran College. He also taught at East Central High School and Seguin High School.

Benno was an entrepreneur at heart. In 1960, he won Grand Champion Barrow at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Lone Star Brewery paid the world’s record price at that time for the barrow - $3,500. With the prize money Benno and Shirley purchased part of the farm they have lived on for 62 years. On that farm, they raised their four children, Yvonne, Donna, Reagan and Bryan. Everyone worked together to raise crops and run a very successful purebred swine breeding operation. After a near fatal tractor accident they converted to a cow and calf operation.

In 1974, Benno was asked by the U.S. Feed Grain Council to travel to South Korea and work as a Service Consultant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He spent 2 years in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. He was asked to continue working for the Agriculture Department but he chose to return home to his beloved farm and community.

In 1978, Benno and brothers Hank and Otto purchased the Seguin Cattle Company. All the brothers, including Richard, worked for years at the Union Stockyards for A.C. Oefinger in San Antonio Texas. When the Union Stockyards closed in 2001, Richard joined his brothers at the Cattle Company.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley (Drzymalla) Luensmann, his sons, Reagan (Mary) Luensmann and Bryan (Lauren) Luensmann, daughters, Yvonne (Steve) Evilsizer and Donna (Tom) Skogman. Grandchildren, Andrew Evilsizer (Kelle Muse), Cheyenne Luensmann, Hunter Luensmann, Garrett Luensmann, Savannah Luensmann, Lane Luensmann, Cole Luensmann and Kelsey Luensmann. Brother, Otto (Loraine) Luensmann, sister, Lillian (Willie) Strey and sistersin-law, Helen Luensmann, Laverne Luensmann and Betty Drzymalla, brother-in-law, Carl Ray (Linda) Drzymalla as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.Serving as pall bearers will be Mike Friesenhahn, Darren Luensmann, Mark Cerda, Lane Luensmann, Cole Luensmann, Andrew Evilsizer, Hunter Luensmann, Garrett Luensmann and Bubba Jahns.

Biden To End COVID-19 Emergencies On May 11

(Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration is set to end two emergencies related to the covid-19 pandemic on May 11th. On Monday, the White House informed Congress that both the national emergency and public health emergency will come to a close, ending most of the COVID relief money. This comes after the World Health Organization said this week that the pandemic is at a “transition point.” Republicans are working to end the emergencies earlier.

NJ Tripledemic Fades Earlier Than Expected

(New York, NY) -- New Jersey’s tripledemic is fading earlier than expected. CDC numbers show COVID-19, RSV and influenza rates declining in New Jersey. Flu and RSV peaked earlier than usual this season slamming hospitals late last fall but have since faded below January’s usual levels and the post holiday COVID wave wasn’t as bad as last year’s. ICU beds in the state are 45-percent full compared to 75-percent nationwide. But the viruses are still taking a toll with a fourth pediatric flu death reported in New Jersey last week along with 62 COVID deaths.

CVS And Walmart Cutting Pharmacy Hours

(Woonsocket, RI) -- CVS and Walmart are both cutting pharmacy hours and closing some locations earlier due to staffing shortages. Both companies have announced that they will scale back hours at their pharmacies as the industry battles a shortage of pharmacists and other key positions starting in March. CVS is adjusting hours at about two-thirds of its retail pharmacies. In a statement, the Rhode Island-based company said it periodically conducts reviews to ensure pharmacies are open during peak customer demand. Walmart is planning to reduce pharmacy hours by closing at 7 p.m. instead of 9 at most of its stores in the coming weeks.

Bill Cementing Abortion Rights Into Law Heads To MN Gov’s Desk

(St. Paul, MN) -- A bill that would cement abortion rights into law is heading to the desk of Minnesota’s governor. The state Senate passed the Protect Reproductive Options Act early Saturday morning. Governor Tim Walz is expected to sign the measure. Over the weekend, he tweeted “here in Minnesota, we trust people to make their own decisions about their bodies.”

Jacob’s Ladder Foundation Cornhole For A Cause

The Jacob’s Ladder Foundation will have its Cornhole For a Cause at noon Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Big Reg Barn, located at 390 Cordova Road. The entry for a two-person team is $40, no subs. No BYOB. The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.
