National retailer announces new location in Seguin
(Seguin) – A national retailer has selected Seguin for its newest location. The Seguin Economic Development Corporation recently announced that Harbor Freight Tools will be moving into at 16,000 square foot space in the Seguin Crossroads Shopping Center located in the 1500 block of East Court Street next to Tractor Supply.
According to the company, Harbor Freight is “America’s go to store for low prices on power tools, generators, jacks, tool boxes and more.”
Applauding this latest name to be added on a list of incoming retailers is Josh Schneuker, SEDC executive director.
“They are going to be in between the former Beall’s space. You can kind of still see I guess the etching from the sign that used to be there and then in between there and where the
current Burke’s is so kind of right dead in the middle there. It’s kind of where I guess The Cranny is located in that area but The Cranny is also going to moving to a larger space in between Burke’s and Boot Barn and so a lot of stuff happening at that center and just a lot of opportunity I think for the city,” said Schneuker.
The store is only one of growing list of retailers moving into Seguin. Schneuker says Crossroads especially has been working overtime to help fill its leasing vacancies.
“I mean we are really excited. Harbor Freight was identified as a targeted retailer for us and we have been working to get them to come to Seguin for a little while now. Everything really in my mind kind of ties back to having that shopping center acquired by the development, investment group out of Houston... Retailer, pg. 3

Guadalupe Valley Young Marines honored as “Division 4 Unit of the Year”
(Seguin) -- The Young Marines, a national youth organization, has named the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines of Seguin as the “Division 4 Unit of the Year,” the top honor for all divisions in a nine-state area. This honor was awarded for the unit’s community service, program achievement and dedication to the mission.
The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age eight through the completion of high school. The organization promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork, and self-discipline, so its
members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
The unit, led by Unit Commander Dina Dillon, meets in Seguin. Division 4 encompasses nine states: Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
“What is so special about our unit is how well we collaborate with our community and veterans’ organizations. When they need help, we are there, and when we need help, they are there. We are always willing to serve,” said Unit Commander Dillon.
In 2022, the unit received the prestigious national award, the Fulcrum Shield, awarded by the
Department of Defense for their Red Ribbon Week efforts (drug prevention and resistance) in the community.
Guadalupe Valley Young Marines is continually active in service to the entire area. Its participation includes volunteering with the Seguin Police Department’s “Badges, Bikes and Trikes” event where 100 bikes are given away to children. The unit planned games to ensure it was a fun event for children who attended. They also assisted the American Legion, Geronimo VFW, and DAV at the city-wide annual ceremonies for Memorial Day, Flag Day, POW/ MIA Day, and Veterans Day. Young Marines, pg. 3

Other events included serving as color guard for the POW/MIA ceremony, the Veterans Day city-wide ceremony, the Alamo City Cat show, the Seguin Chamber of Commerce’s 100-year Birthday Ceremony, the Vietnam Veterans Pinning Ceremony and numerous others.
A highlight of the year was its trip to Navajo Code Talkers Day in Window Rock, Arizona where

“I think that their expertise that they have been able to bring to the table has really helped to accelerate the retail real estate opportunities that are available and now, what we are starting to see – it’s kind of the fruits of their hard work – We are actually seeing renovations at that shopping center right now with Boot Barn working on their improvement. The Old Republic Title is moving in there and Harbor Freight as well. We are really excited about this. We’ve got again a great property owner that is working hard as well to get their available
they honored the Navajo Code Talkers and volunteered while visiting.
Asked what makes Young Marines so rewarding, Unit Commander Dillon said, “Being able to see the spark in a Young Marine’s eye when they understand that what they are learning in the program can benefit them for life. Connections and relationship building are effective in being able to bring experience to these young
people for their future.”
Since the Young Marines’ humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to over 235 units with 6,100 youth and 2,100 adult volunteers in 40 states, the District of Columbia, Japan, and a host of affiliates in other countries.

real estate in front of a lot of the targets that we’ve been going after for several years,” said Schneuker.
Welcoming Harbor Freight to Seguin is just more evidence for Schneuker who last March predicted that Crossroads would quickly attract new business to Seguin following its purchase by commercial real estate
investment group PBC Interests of Houston.
“In terms of available space that they have left, they’ve got really one really big space available. It’s closer to about 30,000 square feet and I know that the property owner and their leasing team are in contact with a few different retailers on that space and I think that could be the
next domino to fall and that would leave just really a couple more smaller spaces. We are going to go from a shopping center that just really not to long ago was at 30 percent occupancy to maybe going into the summer and into the fall, we could be definitely over 8085 percent occupancy for the center, so I think that just really speaks volumes that these national retailers are really starting to see the opportunities that are available here in Seguin with our growing community,” said Schneuker.
There are currently 1,300 locations nationwide. The store is expected to open in Summer 2023.

Benno Luensmann, 88, passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2023.
Benno was born August 7, 1934 to Otto Sr. and Alma (Bielke) Luensmann in Zuehl, Texas. He was the eighth of ten children born on a 75-acre family farm that supported the entire family. Life was difficult and money was scarce during his childhood but those conditions helped mold his life-long philosophy of hard work and determination as well as the value of family, church and community.
He married Shirley Ann Drzymalla on January 26, 1957. He and Shirley started life together with their love for each other, a Master’s degree in Education and a strong determination to succeed. With a lifetime of practical experience in agriculture and degrees in Animal Husbandry and Education, he taught Agriculture at Texas Lutheran College. He also taught at East Central High School and Seguin High School.
Benno was an entrepreneur at heart. In 1960, he won Grand Champion Barrow at the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Lone Star Brewery paid the world’s record price at that time for the barrow - $3,500. With the prize money Benno and Shirley purchased part of the farm they have lived on for 62 years. On that farm, they raised their four children, Yvonne, Donna, Reagan and Bryan. Everyone worked together to raise crops and run a very successful purebred swine breeding operation. After a near fatal tractor accident they converted to a cow and calf operation.
In 1974, Benno was asked by the U.S. Feed Grain Council to travel to South Korea and work as a Service Consultant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He spent 2 years in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. He was asked to continue working for the Agriculture Department but he chose to return home to his beloved farm and community.
In 1978, Benno and brothers Hank and Otto purchased the Seguin Cattle Company. All the brothers, including Richard, worked for years at the Union Stockyards for A.C. Oefinger in San Antonio Texas. When the Union Stockyards closed in 2001, Richard joined his brothers at the Cattle Company.
Over the years, Benno received many awards for his accomplishments as well as recognition for a life time of service to the community and
agriculture. He was recognized by the Swine Breeders Association, Independent Cattlemen’s Association, Texas State University, Texas Lutheran College and the Seguin Chamber of Commerce, to name a few.
Benno and Shirley loved meeting and socializing with each of you. The Covid outbreak ended their busy social schedule but you were always in their hearts.
Benno is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Viola (Pat) Loeffler, Elfrieda (Adolph) Beyer, Evelyn (Chuck) Klein, Marie (Howard) Stacey, Helen (Sinton) Lampman and brothers Henry “Hank” Luensmann and Richard Luensmann as well as brother-in-law Theodore Drzymalla Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley (Drzymalla) Luensmann, his sons, Reagan (Mary) Luensmann and Bryan (Lauren) Luensmann, daughters, Yvonne (Steve) Evilsizer and Donna (Tom) Skogman. Grandchildren, Andrew Evilsizer (Kelle Muse), Cheyenne Luensmann, Hunter Luensmann, Garrett Luensmann, Savannah Luensmann, Lane Luensmann, Cole Luensmann and Kelsey Luensmann. Brother, Otto (Loraine) Luensmann, sister, Lillian (Willie) Strey and sistersin-law, Helen Luensmann, Laverne Luensmann and Betty Drzymalla, brother-in-law, Carl Ray (Linda) Drzymalla as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.Serving as pall bearers will be Mike Friesenhahn, Darren Luensmann, Mark Cerda, Lane Luensmann, Cole Luensmann, Andrew Evilsizer, Hunter Luensmann, Garrett Luensmann and Bubba Jahns.
The family would like to give special thanks to Julia and Noemi as well as Nancy and Vanessa who took wonderful care of “Mr. B”. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Also, many thanks to GRMC Hospice and nurse Sara Sutton Vogel who helped our family through this journey.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Cross Church with Rev. Jim Price officiating. Interment will be at Eden Cemetery in Seguin. Following services, a reception will be held at the Seguin Cattle Company, 2424 Hwy 46, Seguin 78155.

HHS Proposes Rule To Bolster Contraception Access Under ACA
(Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration is moving to expand access to birth control under the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. The Department of Health and Human Services has proposed a rule to remove the moral exemption set in place under the Trump administration. The mandate allows employers to opt out of offering coverage of contraceptive services for moral reasons. The new rule would also create an independent pathway for those enrolled in plans offered by employers with religious exemptions to access contraception through a willing provider. HHS says the proposal would affect more than 100 employers and 125-thousand workers.
Study Examines Link Between Heart Attack Rates And COVID
(Los Angeles, CA) -- Heart attacks are on the rise among younger adults and a recent study suggests there’s a link to COVID-19. Heart attacks have been on the rise over all ages since the start of the pandemic. However, the youngest age group monitored - those between 25 and 44 - saw the highest increase at nearly 30-percent. Researchers at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center point to several possible explanations, including pre-existing conditions. But they also highlighted external factors such as job loss, financial pressures and social anxiety that many have experienced as a result of COVID.
Professor Talks Impacts Of Social Media Use
(Lubbock, TX) -- The U.S. Surgeon General says 13-years-old is too young for children to be on social media. Experts, like Texas Tech Professor Eric Rasmussen, say it can be detrimental to a child’s development and ability to regulate emotions. He studies the link between social media use and mental well-being and says even adults have a hard time regulating their emotions online, so we can’t expect kids to be good at doing that. Dr. Rasmussen says parents need to talk to their kids about what they see on TikTok and Instagram and set clear boundaries.
Pfizer Expecting Sales To Drop This Year
(New York, NY) -- Pfizer is expecting sales to drop this year after posting an all-time high last year. The pharmaceutical giant said sales were just over 100-billion dollars. Half of that came thanks to sales of its COVID vaccine and antiviral medication. Despite that, its projections say revenue this year could fall by up to a third.
