Big Red Barn founder recognized by San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo

(Seguin) -- The rural heartland of Seguin and Guadalupe County did not go unnoticed during this year’s San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo held Feb. 9-26. The Texas Agricultural Education & Heritage Center a.k.a. The Big Red Barn and its founder Wilfred Bartoskewitz were recently awarded and named as a stock show Community Champion.

The local non-profit was touted for having an outstanding positive impact in the community not only in Seguin but throughout the region.

Neal Brodbeck, a member of the Community Champions committee, says the award signifies Bartoskewitz’s leading efforts to preserve the world of agriculture. Thanks to a land donation by the fifth-generation farmer and his wife Betty, a steering committee was put into motion in 2003 to begin the Ag Center which today displays and hosts events to help “create the farming and ranching experience.” Champion, pg. 3

Officer-involved shooting leaves area man dead

(Seguin) -- A Marion man is dead after he was killed in an officerinvolved shooting early Thursday morning in Seguin.

The shooting occurred around 4:45 a.m. at the intersection of Live Oak and Milam streets, near downtown Seguin. The victim has been identified as Alejandro Saucedo, 42, of Marion.

Seguin Police officials say the incident began with a traffic stop at around 1:46 a.m. in the area of North State Highway 123 Bypass and Mockingbird Lane. The patrol officer initiated the traffic stop in that area, but the vehicle continued to flee. It would eventually stop in the area of South Milam and East Live Oak Streets.

conducted a felony stop at that time on the vehicle and its three occupants. The two passengers in the Suzuki SX4 are said to have complied with officer commands and were taken into custody. However, officers say Saucedo, the driver of the vehicle, remained non-compliant.

Officers say the passengers also informed them that Saucedo was in possession of a gun. The Guadalupe County SWAT unit was then activated and negotiations began to try to get Saucedo safely out of the vehicle.

Police say negotiators were not able to gain compliance from Saucedo. They then eventually used gas to try to get Saucedo out of the vehicle. At approximately 4:43 a.m., officers say shots were

fired between Saucedo and law enforcement officials on the scene. Saucedo was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

Some people may have been awakened by an emergency notification from the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office notifying the public to stay out of that area during the incident. The sheriff’s office sent out an all-clear sign just after 6 a.m. Thursday. One of the passengers Zoey Solis, 21, of Gonzales was taken into custody by Seguin police for the manufacture and delivery of drugs, interference with public duties, and resisting arrest.

The case remains under investigation by the Seguin PD’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Rangers.

SEDC honored during legislative conference

(Seguin) -- The Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC) recognized the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) as a recipient of its annual Economic Excellence Recognition program for 2022. The awards were presented on Friday, February 24th, during the TEDC’s 2023 Legislative Conference in Austin, Texas.

The Economic Excellence Recognition program provides recognition to economic development organizations that meet a desired threshold of professionalism. Recipients qualify for recognition based on training taken by their governing board/council as well as the economic development director and professional staff. Certifications, professional memberships and activities, and organizational effectiveness of the economic development staff also contribute to the standards for qualification.

“The TEDC’s Economic Excellence Recognition program is one of the ways in which our organization honors the outstanding commitment to excellence of our communities and regions, their leaders, and their economic development professionals have toward the professionalization of their economic development efforts,” noted Carlton Schwab, president/CEO of the TEDC.”

The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) was established in 1994 to create, attract, retain, and expand economic opportunities for Seguin businesses and its residents. The AG center is located on a working farm -- a farm that has continued operating since the 1850’s. Brodbeck who lives in the area and who is among the six members of the Community Champion committee for the stock show says it was his pleasure to bring the nomination forward.

“Economic Development is a team sport, and the SEDC prides itself on the relationships that we have formed with our existing businesses and other economic development stakeholders. The growth and success that Seguin has sustained over the past several years is a testament to this team’s first approach,” said SEDC Executive Director Josh Schneuker. “It’s an honor to receive state-level recognition from the TEDC for the work that we are doing together here in Seguin. Fifty-three other economic development organizations also received the TEDC’s 2022 Economic Excellence Recognition award.

“Obviously, I have seen that organization grow out there. I was there this past Christmas and hadn’t been there in a couple of years and was just amazed at how much it is grown and all of the kids that were there experiencing everything that has to do with agriculture, it was just a great event and so absolutely, they were well deserving of the Community Champion Award for the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo,” said Brodbeck.

Bartoskewitz says he was honored to have been recognized and shares the award with the many volunteers who help make things happen especially for area children.

“I was really surprised about it because I hadn’t even heard of something like that at the stock show and this is our 20th year and we have about 30 volunteers that help with the Ag in the Classroom, we call it. We have it in the spring. We have the younger children from kindergarten and homeschoolers and private schools up to the third grade and then in the fall, we end picking up the fourth and fifth grade and those are the classes that the Farm Bureau recognizes as the important age of getting a message across to the children,” said Bartoskewitz.

As part of the recognition, Brodbeck says Bartoskewitz was invited to be a part of this year’s rodeo experience.

“The recognition was the presentation of a plaque and Mr. Bartoskewitz and family got to ride in the pickup during the rodeo where we shoot the t-shirt gun and so they got to ride in the truck and there was information

display on the jumbotron about the Texas Agriculture Education & Heritage Center so everyone got to see them in the truck and some information on the jumbotron about the organization,” said Brodbeck.

Bartoskewitz says the truck ride around the arena was for sure a memorable experience and hopes to keep that in his pocket for a very long time. More importantly, he says he thanks the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo for its hospitality and for helping to bring awareness to the Big Red Barn here in Seguin.

“We got treated very well at the stock show. We had a big meal and then the ride. I was surprised as I had a granddaughter that all of a sudden showed up on the back of the truck and rode with me and they were shooting up the canon and throwing out the t-shirts with the writing of the stock show on them and my granddaughter was taking them and throwing them out to the audience,” laughs Bartoskewitz.

According to San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo leaders, Bartoskewitz is also recognized for creating the Puls Farm for local students to house FFA and 4-H projects. They say students that attended school tours and festivals at the Red Barn now lead school tours for the rodeo and many projects housed at Puls Farm competed and placed at the San Antonio Stock Show. He is also applauded for helping to facilitate the education of youth especially those in 4-H and FFA by providing scholarships to generations and generations of students. They say he has not only provided opportunities for youth to learn about agriculture but has also helped to create a new generation of leaders in the field.

SEGUIN, Texas -- The pitching staff for No. 4 Texas Lutheran continued to dominate, securing their second and third shutouts in the last four games. Senior Amanda White (Lockhart/Lockhart) picked up her third straight winning decision with a complete-game no-hitter vs. No. 25 Piedmont to cap a two-shutout day for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs (10-2) opened the day with a 4-0 win over the 25th-ranked Lions (7-5) before firing back to shutout the Lions 3-0 in game two.

In later years,she married District Elder George Floyd Ball and served as Pastor’s wife until his demise. She was an avid Civil Rights worker and played as one of it’s musicians having just served at MLK Day at Central Park in downtown Seguin in 2023. She served her local community and the church’s as well. She died February 27th at the age of 86. Services entrusted to the reverent care of Eunice and Lee Mortuary.

House Panel On COVID Origins Holds First Hearing

(Washington, DC) -- A House panel investigating the origins of COVID-19 is holding its first hearing. Ohio Republican Brad Wenstrup said there’s debate over whether the virus emerged naturally or leaked from a lab in China, but there’s still no “smoking gun” three years after the pandemic began. California Democrat Raul Ruiz said the evidence remains inconclusive and warned against politicizing the issue. The testimony comes on the heels of the FBI and Department of Energy’s assessments that the virus most likely came from a lab leak. Other intelligence agencies believe the virus emerged naturally. The White House says there’s no consensus just yet on the origins and the investigation is ongoing.

Survey: A Quarter Of Parents Lied About Child’s COVID Status

(Washington, DC) -- About a quarter of parents lied about their child’s COVID status or didn’t follow COVID guidelines during the pandemic. That’s according to a recent survey from the American Medical Association. That includes lying about being vaccinated, avoiding getting them a COVID test, or saying they didn’t have to quarantine when they should have. On the other hand, some parents lied not to avoid restrictions but rather reported their child’s age as older in order to get them a vaccine.

(San Antonio, TX) -- The Americans who were attacked and killed in the Mexican border town of Matamoros were there to get plastic surgery. Dr. Thomas Jeneby of the Plastic and Cosmetic Center of South Texas says that’s why he warns people to avoid going south of the border for medical care. Dr. Jeneby says the incident highlights the dangers that some people take to save a few bucks. The victims were kidnapped by members of a Mexican cartel, shortly after crossing the border. Two were killed and two others are back in the United States, recovering in a Texas hospital.

Kids Discover Cosmic Radiation Makes EpiPens Toxic

(Ottawa) -- A group of Canadian elementary students is taking NASA to school. They’ve discovered that EpiPens, an emergency treatment for allergic reactions, can become poisonous in space. The students, parts of a STEM program that let them conduct experiments with small cubes sent to space, sent the pens up. They discovered that in some of the pens, cosmic radiation transformed the main ingredient into an extremely dangerous poison. The kids are now working on ways to shield EpiPens from cosmic radiation and will show their findings to NASA this June.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.
