Two Santa Clara city marshals indicted on criminal charges

(Seguin) -- Indictments have been handed down against two members of the marshal’s office in the city of Santa Clara. The indictments were recently issued by a Guadalupe County Grand Jury.

Marvin Airola, 58, is facing multiple charges, including two charges of misuse of official information. Those are felony charges. Chief Airola also faces misdemeanor charges of official oppression, and unauthorized use or disclosure of computerized criminal

history (CCH).

The allegations suggest that there were questionable practices being used by Airola and other members of the marshal’s office. That includes instances in which marhals were operating outside of the jurisdiction

of the city of Santa Clara, with arrests being made improperly and without allegedly providing proper notifications to the law enforcement agencies that had actual jurisdiction over those areas.

Distinguished Young Women contest set for Sunday at the Texas Theatre

(Seguin) -- Nine young ladies will be competing for a highly coveted title this weekend.

The 2024 Guadalupe County Distinguished Yound Women contest will be held Sunday afternoon in the Stephen and Mary Birch Texas Theatre.

The contest, formerly known as Junior Miss, will feature a talented group girls from around the area. This year’s contestants include Danielle Nyame, Reyna Gold, DyAnna Priestly, Jolissa Rodriguez,

Kaelynn Ramirez, Serenity Garcia, Kailey Ramirez, J’dynn Flores, and Montana White. The girls are looking to replace Taelor Krueger, who is the current 2023-24 Guadalupe County Distinguished Young Woman.

The girls will showcase their skills and talents during the contest, with winners receiving cash scholarships, scholarships to Texas Lutheran University, and other special awards.

This year’s event is also going to include a special recognition of

Steve Tschoepe, who died recently. Tschoepe was long time supporter of the program, and regularly helped to coordinate each year’s event.

The Distinguished Young Women compeition is not a beauty contest. It showcases the academic skills, the individual talents, and the leadership qualities of each participant.

The program begins at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Texas Theatre, located on North Austin Street in downtown Seguin.

Movies in the Park postponed due to threat of wet weather

(Seguin) -- A big explosion of pink was expected Friday night in Max Starcke Park, but the official showing of the film, "Barbie," has been postponed.

The incredibly popular film was slated to kickoff the 2024 Movies In the Park schedule for the Seguin Parks and Recreation Departmnet. However, the threat of wet weather has led to the postponement of Friday's showing.

Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones says "Barbie" fans will still

get a chance to watch the hit movie, but they'll have to wait a few months in order to do so.

"We’ve decided to postpone 'Barbie' to September 27 due to the forecast of inclement weather (on Friday). Our next scheduled Movie in the Park is on April 12 at Park West, located at 601 North Ave., (and)starting at 8:45 p.m. We are showing the original 'Jurassic Park' (at that time).

The free movie nights are hosted

by the city's parks department and are made possible thanks to a donation from HEB.

Moviegoers are encouraged to attend each free movie night on this year's schedule. Folks are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and popcorn for the family-friendly events.

Again, the first film in this year's line-up was supposed to take place Friday night in Starcke Park, but that movie has been pushed back to September.

There are also allegations that marshals may have been misusing criminal history records, by running background checks on individuals -- for reasons unrelated to law enforcement.

In addition to the indictments handed down against Airola, the grand jury also handed two indictments against deputy marshal Terreal R. Hatcher, 34. Hatcher was indicted on two charges of official oppression as part of his time with the Santa Clara Marshal’s Office. Hatcher also works as a marshal with the city of New Berlin.

Both men recently turned themselves in to the Zavala County Jail. It’s not uncommon for law enforcement officials, accused of a crime, to turn themselves in to an agency outside the area in which they work.

We attempted to reach the city of Santa Clara for comment on the indictments, but have not yet received a response.

Area high school baseball and softball roundup

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matadors bounced back from a walk-off loss on the road to Pieper on Tuesday to take down the Warriors on Wednesday at Smokey Joe Williams Field, 4-1 for their first district win of the season.

Dylan Eisen and Cooper Neumann combined on the mound to scatter six hits while allowing no earned runs over seven innings. Neumann was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the sixth getting a line-out and a fly-out to escape unscathed. He then worked a one-two-three 7th inning to earn the save.

Seguin coach Michael Gonzales lauded Neumann’s effort after the victory.

“That’s the type of leader he is.  He said, ‘coach I’m ready to go’ and he’s been in a closer role for us,” Gonzales said. “We’re proud of him. The last time he pitched was two tournaments ago and he comes in and pitches today. There’s no scenario too big for him.”

At the plate, Landon Trost had an RBI triple to put the Mats ahead 2-1 in the third inning. Kevin Lingueno drove in a run with a two-out double in the fourth. Kayden Holz would follow with a base hit to

drive in Lingueno to give the Mats a three-run lead.

Seguin is 1-1 in District 26-5A play after splitting their first two games with the Warriors. The Matadors are off until Tuesday when they will host Smithson Valley for the first of two games against the Rangers next week.

(Johnson City) -- The Navarro Panthers got their second shut-out in two days with a 2-0 win at Johnson City in non-district play on Wednesday.

Colt Brown went the distance on the hill

allowing only four hits and striking out seven. Brown’s performance came one day after Maddux Adams shutout Poth on Tuesday.

Landun Taylor slugged a solo shot at the plate for the Panthers. Austin Davidson went 2-for-4.

Navarro will be at Hondo this coming Tuesday.

High school softball:

(San Antonio) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors evened their District 26-5A record at 2-2 by runruling San Antonio Wagner, 20-1 in San Antonio on Wednesday.

The Lady Matadors pounded out 15 hits in just four innings. Camryn Rios hit her second home run in two days going 4-for-4 with four RBI. Chloe Belicek, D’Yanna Priestly, Graylyn Salazar and Brylee Weiding each had two hits in the victory. Kendall Hurt went four innings in the circle, allowing one unearned run and fanning three.

The Lady Mats will continue district play when they host San Antonio Veterans Memorial at the Fields at Huber Ranch on Tuesday.

A loving daughter, friend, teacher, wife, Mama and Gigi

Susan Brown Glenewinkel of San Marcos Texas, aged 57, passed away unexpectedly on March 11, 2024, leaving a hole in the hearts of all who knew her and a sadness so profound there are no words for it. She was born on July 24, 1966, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Dorothy (Clausen) and Neil Brown. She grew up in a loving family with her parents, brother Kevin, and numerous wonderful dogs.

Susan graduated from Southwest Texas State, where she was very active as a Sigma Nu Little Sister. She met many lifelong friends in San Marcos, including her very best friend, her future husband, Reagan Glenewinkel. She and Reagan married in 1992 and moved to Round Rock, Texas, where Susan focused on her number one dream job of being a mother. They also spent time in El Paso, Seguin and San Marcos as they moved with Reagan’s job with UPS. No matter where they were, Susan always created a home filled with love and the many friends she met along the way. Reagan and Susan’s 32-year marriage exuded a special magic and devotion that has served as a model for their children and those that know them.

When all of her children were school-aged, Susan earned her teaching certificate and put it to use serving students in various districts across Texas. She was a dedicated and passionate teacher whose commitment and passion touched the lives of countless students. Most recently, Susan was the Response to Intervention (RTI) teacher at Bluebonnet Elementary in Lockhart. She taught in Lockhart ISD for 10 years, continually inspiring her students and spurring them on to a love for learning. She also dedicated time as a mentor and a friend to her colleagues, always at the ready to lend a hand or a listening ear. Susan’s fun-loving and caring spirit made her the perfect teacher.

Susan was a devoted and caring wife, Mama and Gigi who always put her family first. Nothing made Susan happier than spending time with those she called her own. Susan was the proud mother of six children –five by birth and one by choice. She was also an amazing Gigi to thirteen grandchildren who brought her much joy. Susan was the heart of the family, the one everyone counted on whether it be sage advice, warm hospitality, or a listening ear. She was always supportive and encouraging of her family’s

dreams and aspirations, championing them in all their life choices.

Susan was a kind and generous friend who made everyone feel welcomed and valued. She had a warm and genuine smile that lit up any room. She had a great sense of humor and a zest for life. She loved to read, sit by her pool, or wade in the river. Her greatest passion and accomplishment was by far building a life of adventure, love, and mutual support with Reagan.

Susan is already missed by her husband, Reagan; her children, Morgan Snody (wife Erin and children Blair and Reese); Trenton Snody (wife Sarah and children Charlotte, Sophia, and Nora); David Vidales (wife Kalie and children Eli, Flora, and Lyla); Cameron Glenewinkel (wife Amanda and children Lane August and Cameron); Jackson Glenewinkel (wife Bailey and children Margarat Jo and Beaux); Mary Carson Glenewinkel Mills (husband Alex and son Auggie); by her loving parents, Neil and Dottie Brown of San Antonio; her Uncle Walt; her brother Kevin Brown of Florida (wife Jennifer and children, Adam and Josh); by her brothersand sisters-in-law who counted her as a true sister; by many nieces and nephews; by a very large circle of friends from every stage of her life, and by her colleagues and students. Last but not least, even her beloved dogs, Gypsy and Huckleberry, feel her absence greatly. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her aunt, Betty Graham.

Susan created a beautiful life, full of joy, love, and kindness. Her enduring legacy will live on with her parents, brother, husband, children and grandchildren, family, and friends. Her circle was wide and her impact on this world and the hearts of others was great.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at St James Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Monsignor Dennis Darilek officiating. Interment will follow in the Kingsbury Cemetery. Reception information will be provided at the service.

Her sons and son-in-law will serve as pallbearers for their mother.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Susan Brown Glenewinkel Memorial Fund, which they are in the process of establishing to honor Susan’s commitment to education. Norman Ricketts (Skip) Hall, Jr., was born on June 18, 1945, and passed on to Heaven on March 2, 2024, after a lengthy, difficult battle against cancer.

Skip leaves behind his wife Beth of fifty-seven years, his son Randy and fiancé Jennifer, and one granddaughter Remi of Portland, Oregon; his younger brother Charlie and wife Vicky, and their two sons: Caleb and wife Sara and Nathan and spouse Dre along with great nephews Rowe and Ripp; his remaining sister-inlaw Karen Hudson and Danny Glenn, her daughter Dawn Hooper and husband Mike and their children Tyler Hooper and wife Peyton and son Ryder and Maddie Hooper; numerous cousins, friends, and former students.

Skip was a dedicated history/government/economics teacher for a total of thirty-three years, He was department chairman at Seguin High and later at Kerrville Tivy High School and served as Student Council sponsor at Seguin. He also jokingly claimed to have taught “advanced

detention hall.” Skip was lucky enough to have enjoyed the fun of ranching at the Killeen family ranch that is now the development Skipcha Mountain—the name a combination of the two brothers’ names. He later ranched at Cleo, Texas, on the family ranch. He enjoyed every aspect of deer hunting, from feeding the deer, preparing for deer season, traveling to the lease— even if it just involved going out the back door— and hanging his trophy horns throughout the house. Following his father’s example, Skip became an educator. He grew up in Killeen and attended the public schools there. He graduated from Angelo State University in its first graduating class in 1967 and completed his Master’s at East Texas State University in Commerce in 1971. Skip was preceded in death by his parents Billye Barr Hall and Norman Ricketts Hall, Sr.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin, Texas, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22 with Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Old Killeen City Cemetery.

Auto Group Gives Most Hands-Free Systems “Poor” Rating

(Undated) -- A major auto safety group says most hands-free driving systems are unsafe. On Tuesday, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced nearly all driving automation systems received “poor” safety ratings. Out of 14 systems tested, eleven of them received “poor” ratings, two were rated “marginal,” and only one was rated as “acceptable.” None received a “good” or better rating. IIHS President David Harkey says most systems “don’t include adequate measures to prevent misuse and keep drivers from losing focus on what’s happening on the road.”

New Initiative From Cook County Clerk To Help Protect Women’s Privacy

(Chicago, IL) -- The Clerk of the Cook County Circuit Court Iris Martinez is unveiling an initiative designed to protect women’s privacy. She says the right to privacy initiative will leave the country in safeguarding women’s rights by sealing court records that contain women’s reproductive health information. Currently, private matters like abortion and IVF when mentioned in court hearings can be in data that is part of public record. Martinez adds that the new technology will be used to redact and seal more than 100 million cases in Cook County following the digitization of millions of files over the last three years.

Doctors Say Florida Man’s Headaches Caused By Tapeworm Eggs

(Undated) -- A Florida man is recovering after getting tapeworm eggs in his brain. A case report published last week says the 52-year-old patient recently told doctors he had been suffering from persistent migraines. A CT scan found tapeworm eggs festering in the man’s brain. Doctors believe the parasite infestation was caused by the man’s habit of eating undercooked bacon, which could contain the microscopic eggs of pork tapeworms. The case report says the man was treated with anti-parasitic medications and appears to be on the road to recovery.

UK Bans Puberty Blockers For Minors

(United Kingdom) -- Puberty blockers are being banned for minors under 18 in the United Kingdom. The country’s National Health Service announced the decision Tuesday, banning them outside of clinical trials. Puberty blockers are used to delay the effects of puberty, with the treatment sparking protests in the United States already.

The Texas Lutheran University Tax Clinic will be open to the

Volunteer Van Drivers Needed

Guadalupe County Veteran Services Office is in great need of volunteer van drivers. Even those who can only commit to one day per month. Volunteers will drive local veterans who have no transportation to their VA medical appointments in San Antonio. To volunteer, call 830-303-4188 ext. 1249.

Free Accredited Adult Homeschool Program

The Life Changing Church is now offering a Free Accredited Homeschool Program for adults wanting to earn their high school diploma. It is a self-paced, no classes to attend program. You work around your schedule and at the end of the program you will receive an accredited diploma that is acceptable for college. Tutors are available at no charge. Salvation Army Office

The Seguin Unit Salvation Army office is located at 205 North King Street. The office is open to receive requests for assistance weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Volunteers Needed

The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines need volunteers. They promote a healthy, drug-free program and need males, 19 years and up who would like to see the program grow by contributing time to help future citizens, boys and girls 8 to 18.
