Community Kite Festival

(Seguin) -- Get ready to fly the highest kite that you can at this year’s Seguin ISD Community Kite Festival.

The school district will again be relying on the wind for its annual tradition this Saturday at Manuel C. Castilla Park. The Kite Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Allison Seidenberger, the director of Seguin ISD’s ACE After School programming, says what began three years ago is now a large scale event bringing all families together.

“In year one, it just started as a brainchild

between the Seguin Independent School District and the city of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department and we really wanted to create a positive experience for families to come out and not only bond within their family unit but also within the Seguin community as a whole and so we have been really fortunate that the last two years, we have had really nice weather day of and had anywhere between 500 to 600 individuals participate and enjoy the activities,” said Seidenberger. Lions to host Free FunRun-Walk this Saturday

(Seguin) -- You’re invited to walk on the wild side during this year’s free Seguin Sunrise Lions’ Fun-RunWalk.

Lion Marvel Maddox says the event, which continues its theme of the Lions Jungle Fun Run, gets underway this Saturday morning at the footbridge of Walnut Springs Park located just across from the Seguin Public Library.

“It is just a fun run. Some of our participants take it most seriously and they leave the starting gate ahead of the others and they try to get the best personal time but others just stroll along the beautiful greenbelt along the hike and bike trail and just take their time,” said Maddox. “Check in for participants is 8 o’clock. There’s no fee. No pre-registration. Just whoever shows up, shows up,” said Maddox.

Maddox says what might be most exciting is this year’s route which will lead folks through the newest stretch of the city’s hike and bike trail.

“We’ve got it completely monitored. We’ve got Lions stationed throughout the course and I am particularly excited this year because for the first time, we are going south. We always start at the Walnut Springs Park. I call it

the bird park because of the sculptures there but Walnut Springs Park which is right by the county tax office off of Court Street and the starting point is at the pedestrian foot bridge so everybody crosses the foot bridge and this year, for the first time, we are going south. We are going down into the pecan bottom in Starcke Park East and to me, that’s the most beautiful section of the hike and bike trail is that section that starts behind the public library and goes all the way to Starcke Park and then, they return and they cross the pedestrian bridge and that’s the finish line. So, we start and finish there,” said Maddox.

Maddox says each year, the event brings out folks from all over. He says it’s just about having fun and being in the outdoors.

“Everybody gets a ribbon that says ‘I Survived The Lions Jungle Fun Run’ and then, we give awards for the best theme costume -- the top finisher gets an award and then we give team awards for best four team finish and whatever organization brings the most participants also gets an award. So lots of awards. Everyone gets a ribbon,” said Maddox.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m. Saturday followed by the start time at 8:30 a.m.

Pair of men land themselves behind bars thanks to Crime Stoppers

(Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers Hotline has again proven successful after information led to the arrest of two local men. Tip results reportedly led to a search warrant for Ronnie LaVon Ratcliff, 70 and Edmond Floyd Cunningham,49

According to the Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force, both men were taken into custody just before midnight Tuesday at a home located in the 700 block of Shannon Ave. During their search of the property, officers seized 133.4 grams of crack cocaine; 12.6 grams of cocaine, 35.3 grams of methemphetime and 34.8 grams of marijuana.

Officials say this operation was "a direct result of citizens' complaints and submissions to the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers anonymous tip system."

Ratcliff and Cunningham were each booked on charges of manufacture and delivery of drugs. Both remain in the Guadalupe County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond each.

“We have a number of donated kites from both the city of Seguin and Walmart so first come, first serve but we have about, I think, $800 worth total of kites that have been donated for families to get to utilize in the big open field there at Manuel C. Castilla Park and then we also have a kite making station which is a very (simple) version for some of the smaller ones but lots of fun,” said Seidenberger.

On top of the kite flying, Seidenberger says there will be plenty of other free family fun.

“We have booths and community resources set up. Many of them incorporate or embed games or free giveaways and then we also within the ACE Afterschool Programming team have a number of stations and activities set up and then we have free food such as our Child Nutrition team for the district provides some kind of healthy snack in conjunction with the Student Support Team and the ACE Afterschool Programming team, we provide a hot dog meal, chips and water for

Seidenberger says the Seguin ISD, this year, has even added to its list of events bringing more of its families together.

“Millionionare Productions DJ’s our event and so there will be live music. This year, something new, Vogel Choir is going to perform about 11 o’clock for us so we are excited about that and Ball (Early Childhood Center) Elementary also incorporates their Fun Run so sign-up will be at 10 o’clock for that and at 10:30, they will start a Fun Run that is also part of the event so there’s a number of ways to participate,” said Seidenberger.

Even more, Seidenberger says a special kite demonstration has been added to this year’s schedule.

“This year, we actually have a demo group that is bringing out some quite large, I think, they are 8 feet in length kites that they are going to demo for us. So each year, there is a few more things that get added and that’s exactly how we hope for it to be,” said Seidenberger.

The Community Kite Festival is open to all families. Manuel Castilla Park is located at 2402 N. Guadalupe St. Blankets and chairs are encouraged.

Seguin’s Jackson and Zuniga and Navarro’s Kramer to play in San Antonio Sports allstar basketball games on Sunday

(San Antonio) — Seguin’s John Jackson and Desiree Zuniga along with Navarro’s Sienna Kramer will play in the inaugural San Antonio Sports all-star basketball games on Sunday.

Jackson, the District 26-5A Offensive MVP this past season, led Seguin in scoring at 27.9 points per game, which was tops in the state of Texas in Class 5A and third in all classifications. He also led Seguin in rebounding at nearly 10 boards per contest. A four-year Matador basketball letterman, Jackson was a McDonald’s All-American nominee. On January 16th, the senior guard/forward passed 2000 points in his career.

Desiree Zuniga, an all-district first team member led the Lady Mats in scoring dropping in 10.5 points per game. She made 101 threepoint baskets in 35 games played, an average of 2.9 three-pointers per game. She also led the Lady Matadors in assists and steals. Zuniga

was an All-District Honorable Mention in her junior season last year.

Sienna Kramer, an All-District 27-4A First Team honoree, averaged 9.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game for Navarro this season in 33 games. She led the Lady Panthers in shooting percentage at 52 percent. Kramer also led

Navarro in total rebounds with 228 boards on the season.

Jackson, Zuniga and Kramer will compete at the San Antonio Sports All-Star Basketball Games and Skills Challenge this Sunday. The games will feature 120 top local high school seniors who will play on either Team Black or Team Gold in two different divisions, 1A –4A schools along with private schools and 5A/6A schools.

There will be four games total. Each division will have a girls’ and boys’ game. The festivities will start at Noon on Sunday at the Northside ISD Sports Gymnasium.

And it will be a busy weekend for Zuniga. On Saturday, she will participate in the Hill Country Chicken Express All-Star Game and three-point contest in Fredericksburg. That event will get started at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Fredericksburg High School.

Frank Edward Ketchum was born on June 28, 1947 in Seguin, Texas to the parents of Frank and Maudester Ryan Ketchum. His early Christian life began at Refuge Church of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He attended Ball High and graduated from Seguin High School. Frank was an avid tennis player at Ball High and Seguin High Schools. completion he furthered his education by attending Durham College and St. Philip’s College. Frank was a faithful employee to Burke’s Forms. Frank’s favorite passions were fishing, gardening, reading and of course taking photos of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Danny and Bill Ketchum and sister Annet Ketchum Hall.

A memorial service, for Frank Edward Ketchum, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23 at Wesley Harper United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the charity of ones choice.

Norman Ricketts (Skip) Hall, Jr., was born on June 18, 1945, and passed on to Heaven on March 2, 2024, after a lengthy, difficult battle against cancer.

Skip leaves behind his wife Beth of fifty-seven years, his son Randy and fiancé Jennifer, and one granddaughter Remi of Portland, Oregon; his younger brother Charlie and wife Vicky, and their two sons: Caleb and wife Sara and Nathan and spouse Dre along with great nephews Rowe and Ripp; his remaining sister-inlaw Karen Hudson and Danny Glenn, her daughter Dawn Hooper and husband Mike and their children Tyler Hooper and wife Peyton and son Ryder and Maddie Hooper; numerous cousins, friends, and former students.

Skip was a dedicated history/government/economics teacher for a total of thirty-three years, He was department chairman at Seguin High and later at Kerrville Tivy High School and served as Student Council sponsor at Seguin. He also jokingly claimed to have taught “advanced

detention hall.” Skip was lucky enough to have enjoyed the fun of ranching at the Killeen family ranch that is now the development Skipcha Mountain—the name a combination of the two brothers’ names. He later ranched at Cleo, Texas, on the family ranch. He enjoyed every aspect of deer hunting, from feeding the deer, preparing for deer season, traveling to the lease— even if it just involved going out the back door— and hanging his trophy horns throughout the house. Following his father’s example, Skip became an educator. He grew up in Killeen and attended the public schools there. He graduated from Angelo State University in its first graduating class in 1967 and completed his Master’s at East Texas State University in Commerce in 1971. Skip was preceded in death by his parents Billye Barr Hall and Norman Ricketts Hall, Sr.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin, Texas, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22 with Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Old Killeen City Cemetery.

Abortions Up Nationwide Despite 2022 Overturning Of Roe v. Wade (New York, NY) -- Abortions are up in the U.S., despite bans in more than a dozen states since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. More than a million abortions were performed nationwide in 2023, one year after the U.S. Supreme Court ended a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. The Guttmacher Institute, a non-profit based in New York City, found a ten-percent jump in abortions since 2020, the highest number in a decade with a growing number of those “medication” abortions. Their report also said some women are traveling for abortions, mostly to states bordering their own where abortion is legal.

Biden Issues Executive Order On Women’s Health Research (Washington, DC) -- President Biden is issuing an executive order aimed at improving women’s health research. The president signed the order during a Women’s History Month reception at the White House on Tuesday. The order directs federal agencies to strengthen research and data standards on women’s health and prioritize funding for women’s health research. The President, in his remarks, criticized lawmakers pushing to restrict abortion access. He added that if he’s re-elected in November and has a Democratic Congress to work with, he’ll “restore Roe v. Wade.”

Intermittent Fasting Could Be Heart Risk

(Dallas, TX) -- Intermittent fasting is a popular weight-loss technique, but it could be a health risk. The American Heart Association, based in Dallas, has announced a study showing that adults on an eight-hour restricted eating schedule had a 91-percent higher chance of cardiovascular disease than those who ate normally. Intermittent fasting did not, however, increase the risk of death from any cause.

CDC Issues Alert For Measles

(San Diego, CA) -- There’s an alert out for measles across the country. The CDC says so far this year, there are 58 cases in 17 states. That already equals the number of cases reported in all of 2023. Once eradicated, the CDC is once again urging families to make sure they get their measles vaccines. Doctors say, on average, one infected person infects 12 to 18 unvaccinated people. The airborne virus can linger in the air long after someone leaves a room. The common symptoms include rash, a high fever, watery eyes, cough and a runny nose.

The Texas Lutheran University Tax Clinic will be open to the public through Monday, April 15. Hours of operation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
