New Squirrel Trail Program sparks “Curiosity”

(Seguin) – The city of Seguin continues to welcome squirrels out of their nest one by one. The latest in a series of larger-thanlife, fiber-glass squirrels has yet again made its debut, this time outside the Seguin Public Library. Since February, the city has begun to unveil the concrete squirrel sculptures as part of the Seguin Squirrel Trail Program. Each sponsored squirrel is painted by a local artist and then permanently mounted somewhere throughout the community.

Commissioning the painting of the city’s third squirrel is local couple Chris and Jim Dyess. Chris says the couple didn’t hesitate to sponsor a squirrel. She says the couple was just excited that the city was launching the unique program – a program like others across the country.

“We’ve seen public art in small

towns around the United States and it’s really cool. It really ties a town together, so we were thrilled when Seguin did the squirrel thing. We’ve seen that when we were in Houston. It was a lot of fun for people to go around and see the different cows. It’s just a fun thing for people to be able to do in the community and to promote art that people can touch,” said Chris.

Chris’ husband Jim says they also didn’t hesitate in picking a location to plant their squirrel.

“We picked the library because we do some of our programs here with the library and we really think that Seguin has got one of the best libraries maybe in the state especially for a town of its size. So it was so impressive when Seguin decided that it was important enough for the community to have a quality first class library,” said Jim. Curiosity, pg. 3

Kiwanis contribute to game changer technology in treating abuse cases

(Seguin) – Community support is not only helping GRMC better treat patients who have been sexually abused or strangled, but it is only helping victims with the prosecution of their cases. Guadalupe Regional Medical Center has welcomed a $2,500 donation towards the purchase of a forensic camera to be used by its SANE (Sexual Assault Nursing Examiner) Department.

The Contrast SDFI Forensic Camera System is designed “to see and capture high resolution images and video within the ultraviolet light spectrum.

The SDFI or Secure Digital Forensic Imaging camera system essentially works to better detail wounds especially those that are not visible to the naked eye. Grateful to have received funding for the technology is SANE Nurse Christie McGuire. She says it’s incredibly appreciated because this camera is by far top of the line. She says the equipment that they have now is not conducive to taking external injury photographs and is not designed to take photos from head to toe.

More importantly, she says this new technology will allow them to better serve all patients that walk through their doors.

“We don’t just do sexual assault cases. We do strangulations which we’ve been seeing a lot of that lately and when there is a strangulation case or any kind of domestic violence, child abuse or (sex) trafficking case, there is usually a lot of physical injuries to the outside

of the body and so, this CFI camera has a filter system built in that gives you very very consistent, high quality photographs that can view things that your naked eye cannot see. There’s so many additional things that come with the camera,” said McGuire.

This new camera not only captures photo documentation of solid evidence but also those of fluids.

By allowing medical staff to see more closely the damage underneath the skin, McGuire says this new camera can not only help treat patients on the spot but can ultimately help save their life especially in strangulation cases.

“You can die seven days after strangulation so anytime that somebody comes in with a sexual assault –say we are in there doing an exam and the minute when we are doing the history and they mention anything about a strangulation, we immediately stop the SANE exam and we take them straight to the ER for CT imaging in order to rule out any kind of damage because it doesn’t take whole lot of pressure to cause those kinds of injuries,” said McGuire.

She says any and all details captured outside the neck with the camera is what McGuire says is the real game changer in these unfortunate cases.

“It’s the only camera that images are immiscible in a court. That’s a real big deal for us too because that’s what this is all about is not just taking care of the victim but also the prosecution,” said McGuire. Cases,

In February, the city welcomed the unveiling of its first Squirrel named Joy outside the Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church located on Dolle Avenue. The second squirrel was welcomed just last week by Schertz Bank & Trust located along State Highway 123 Bypass. That squirrel is named Saver.

As for this squirrel, well Jim says it too has a special name, Curiosity.

“So, when we were considering names because we had recognized that other squirrels had names, we looked around for of photos

of squirrels and we find squirrels poking their heads around a tree and kind of curiously looking at you and then we realized that our kids are all naturally curious. So sometimes us adults reduce that curiosity a little bit instead of encouraging it,” said Jim.

Excited to have Curiosity placed outside along the sidewalk is Library Jacki Gross Not only does it have details of favorite spots in Seguin, but it also pays tribute to a late member of the Seguin Art League and the contributions of other community members. She says the details alone offer an archive of information.

“The donation is a huge benefit. We do have Elaine (Bennett) and the foundation that is helping us to write grants and secure these donations. The SANE Department is not a department that is any kind of money maker or anything so these nurses obviously cost money but their technology cost a lot of money and these patients aren’t being charged for this type of service so when they come into the hospital, we work to secure funding through Crime Victim and so this isn’t really what you would call a money making department so we really do rely on donations to help stay at the top of our game as far as technology goes,” said Patek.

Thankful to have been able to help with the cost is Kiwanis Club Secretary Danny Vinson. Vinson says after learning the importance of what is described as “the ultimate solution for contrast forensic photography, the club knew it had to show its support.

“But no, we were not familiar with it. It just

know the building was going to be on there. We were just excited that they wanted to put a squirrel here so it’s lovely and gosh, we are just honored that we got to be the recipient of this Curiosity,” said Gross.

Both Chris and Jim say they don’t represent a particular group, church or business but simply a pair of residents who wanted to support their community.

“That’s kind of us. In fact, we had considered getting a group together to help with the cost because some people need a little more help with gathering that money together. But you can have a neighborhood do it. You can have a club – if everyone chips in $50 or $100 and you can be proud of whatever your thing is (squirrel design),” said Chris.

Local artist Liz Romero is responsible for Curiosity’s creative colors.

The Seguin Squirrel Trail Program has at least 11 more squirrels to be unveiled. Seguin Main Street officials say some are on their way for debut while others are still in the preliminary design phase. Those wishing to sponsor a squirrel are asked to contact the Main Street office for cost and other details.

Canyon Cougarettes Stay Unbeaten with Win at Seguin

(Seguin) -- New Braunfels Canyon remained unbeaten through 16 games in the 2023 season with a 12-5 win over the Seguin Lady Matadors in a District 26-5A softball match-up at Seguin High School on Friday night.

The Cougarettes jumped on Seguin with four runs in the top of the first inning as the first four batters all reached base and came around to score. The Lady Mats would answer with three runs of their own as Ryan Rangel drove in a pair of runs with a double in the bottom of the first off of Canyon ace Haley Carmona.

Carmona would settle down though and keep Seguin off the scoreboard until the 7th inning when Rangel, her future teammate at St. Edward’s University next year, would drive in two more runs with a single. The five runs by Seguin matched a season high given up by Canyon.

Ashlie Aguilar had two hits and scored two runs from the lead off spot for the Lady Matadors. Cameron Rios also scored a pair of runs for Seguin. Carmona, who struck out 16 in a shutout win over Smithson Valley earlier this week, would go the distance while striking out 10 for Canyon. She also went 3 for 5 at the plate with two runs scored and 2 RBI.

The win by the Cougarettes kept them atop the district standings at 6-0. Seguin fell to 3-3 in district and 17-8-1 overall on the season. The Lady Mats will be on the road next at Boerne-Champion this coming Tuesday.

VITAL STATISTICS

Colonel George Robert (Bob) Hyatt III (Ret), age 83, of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 21, 2023, at his home.

Bob was born June 28, 1939, in Pearsall, Texas to Bob and Grace (Howard) Hyatt. He lived in South Texas as a young man, lived and worked on a ranch for a time and developed a love of horses. He graduated High school in San Marcos Texas in 1957. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1961. Later in life he earned two master’s degrees; one from Auburn and one from New Mexico State University. While still at Southwest Texas State University, he made his first great decision and married Aubrey Carolyn Allison.

Bob was a career air force pilot. In training, flew the T-37 Tweet and T38 Talon. His flying skills were recognized, and he became an instructor pilot immediately after his flight training. He also flew the F-100 Super Sabre for a time. All his initial flying was in jets. The US Air Force sent Bob to Vietnam to fly the smallest slowest single engine propeller plane you can find, the O-1 Bird Dog. During this first tour in Vietnam, he was a Forward Air Controller for the famed 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, “The Black Horse”. In that first year, he saved countless lives flying over 400 missions at low altitude, often under fire, calling in supporting air strikes. It was during this tour that Bob was awarded the Silver Star by the US Army. For the rest of his life, he was particularly proud of his membership in 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. After his first tour in Vietnam, he moved over to the Strategic Air Command and began flying the B-52 Stratofortress, one of the largest combat aircraft in the world with eight jet engines. He made a second trip to southeast Asia in the B-52 flying combat missions out of U-Tapao Thailand. We can say he was a great pilot!

After retiring from the Air Force in Albuquerque, NM, he became a Special Ed teacher and taught at Los Lunas High

School, as well as Briesmeister Middle School in Seguin. He was quite involved with his horses and team penning. In 2000, he and Carolyn moved to Seguin Texas where he continued teaching for a few years and continued to enjoy his horses. One of his horses was a Palomino and for a time, he rode with the Palomino Patrol. He also volunteered at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and was a member Kiwanis and was president of Kiwanis for a year. In June of 2021 he made his second great decision and married Judy Johnson.

Bob is preceded in death by his first wife Carolyn Allison Hyatt, the mother of his four children and his brother William (Bill) Hyatt.

Survivors include his loving wife, Judy MyCue Hyatt; children, Robert Lee Hyatt II and wife Cindy, Bonnie Allison Wright and husband, Mark, John Alan Hyatt and wife, Dana, David Howard Hyatt, Jeffrey Johnson and Jennifer Johnson; grandchildren, Katherine E. Steichen, Benjamin J. Steichen, Robert L. Hyatt, III, Daniel S. Hyatt, Matthew A. Hyatt, Allison R. Hart, Jacob M. Wright, Emma G. Novis, Raechel A. Hyatt, Joshua T. Hyatt and Luke A. Hyatt; great-grandchildren, Adrin, Riley, Hayden, Henry, Bruce, Gavin and Ryleigh; his devoted sisters, Grace E. “Kita” Rutherford, Mary Ann Hyatt and Leslie K. Matthews; numerous nieces and nephews and many other loving family and friends.

The family would like to thank special friend Gary Horne, Bob’s stepchildren Jennifer and Jeffrey Johnson, and the Old Campbell Road neighborhood residents who attended him and visited him the last few weeks of his life.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 27, 2023, 10 a.m. at First Methodist Church with the Rev. Cathe Evins officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. A reception will follow in Hierholzer Hall at First Methodist Church.

Floyd ‘Sergeant Easy’ Banta, of Seguin Texas, took his final breath with his loving children by his side, on March 17, 2023, and took his first steps in Heaven a moment later. He passed at the age of 74 years and is survived by his daughters Dollene Banta and Sara [Kevin] Banta, Sons Stephen [Monica] Banta and Bill [Rehn] Bohnas; Grandchildren Jaclyn, Ryan, Autumn, Macey, Jadelynn, Damian, Kambrie, Hailey, Paisley, Katy & 5 Great-grandchildren; His loving friends; Ronnie, Ruth, Linda, Jay & Bonnie, Kevin & Elisabeth, Butch, and lastly, his faithful dog Pax.

Floyd is preceded in death by his mother Brownie Banta, father Jack Banta, brother Stan Banta, and stepdaughter Malissa West.

Floyd will always be remembered by his family and friends as a jovial storyteller of an eventful life; from his time as a young man hunting and fishing his family’s ranch, to rough work in the oil field, being a trucker on the road and tales of his time serving the Army in Vietnam and Germany. His later years in life he was dedicated to his bible studies and spreading the word of Christ. While Floyd will be greatly missed by his friends and family, they all know that he is in Heaven “catching more fish than you can shake a stick at.” A memorial service will be set for a later date. Malissa Lynn West of Seguin Texas passed away March 10, 2023 at the age of 52 years young. She leaves behind her life partner & best friend Jason, daughter Macey Berryhill, son Nolan Berryhill, mother and stepfather Bonnie and Jay Forshage, father Tommy West, sister Sara Banta, brothers Stephen Banta and Bill Bohnas, grand mother Patsy Forshage, nieces; Autumn, Jadelynn, Kambrie, Hailey, Paisley, Katy, nephew Damian. Malissa joins in heaven, her son, Noble Berryhill.

Malissa had been battling breast cancer for many, many years, yet she never let trials and tribulations break her spirit. She loved Minnie Mouse, crocheting, & spending time with her dogs Tootie & Dozey. She was quick witted to crack a joke with her family and friends to try and put a smile on their face, even in times of her own suffering. She was passionate about spending time with her family, especially her daughter Macey, her love Jason, nieces, friends and loved ones.

Norovirus Sickens Hundreds Of Students At NY High School (Babylon, NY) -- Norovirus is blamed for a stomach bug outbreak that’s ripped through a New York high school. It began with 80 kids getting sick after an assembly and dance on March 17th at Babylon Junior Senior High School on Long Island. By Monday, more than 250 students out of 700 at the school were out sick with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott [[ puh-GO ]] says norovirus can spread like wildfire, but usually goes away after a day or two. He says the key to avoiding it is to wash your hands a lot since norovirus spreads on the skin and you can pick it up from doorknobs and staircase railings.

KY Governor Vetoes Transgender Bill (Frankfort, KY) -- Kentucky’s governor is vetoing a bill in his state addressing a number of transgender issues. Democrat Andy Beshear says the bill “allows too much government interference in personal healthcare” and puts educators in a position where they’ll be investigators. The bill directs teachers to use the pronoun that matches a student’s birth gender, prohibits gender change procedures for people under 18, and would require schools to create a trans bathroom plan. Despite the veto, the Republican supermajority in the state legislature could overturn his decision.

CDC: White Child Autism Rates Now Lower Than Black Kids

(Atlanta, GA) -- Fewer white eight-year-olds are being diagnosed with autism than their Black counterparts. That’s according to new data from the CDC. About two-and-a-half percent of white kids that age were diagnosed with autism compared to just below threepercent of Black eight-year-olds. Overall, one in 36 children who were eight-years-old had autism spectrum disorder. That’s a more than 20-percent jump from 2018.

US TB Cases Returning To Pre-Pandemic Highs

(Atlanta, GA) -- Today is World Tuberculosis Day. T-B cases in the U.S are climbing back to pre-pandemic levels, according to a new report from the C-D-C. The bureau’s numbers show a 20-percent drop in cases in 2020, but national numbers have rebounded over the last two years. Worldwide, some one-point-five million people die of tuberculosis annually.

The Geronimo Lions will have its First Friday Feast Fish or Steak Dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7 at the Big Red Barn. Meals are $20 (a child’s hot dog plate is $5). Adult Pickleball League

There will be an Adult Pickleball League held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday from April 11 through May 16 at the Seguin-Saegert Pickleball Complex, located at 418 W. Mountain St. in Seguin. The league includes four weeks of games and a final Championship Week, played with those of similar skill. Participants must commit to all five weeks of league play. Inclement weather day is scheduled for Tuesday, May 16. Players must wear athletic closed-toe shoes. Equipment will not be provided. Native Plant Society Meeting

The Guadalupe Chapter of the Native Plant Society will have its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 1121 E. Walnut St. in Seguin. City of Seguin Spring Clean-up Day

The City of Seguin will have its Spring Clean-up Day from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 22 at the Seguin Events Complex (Coliseum) parking lot, located at 950 S. Austin St. in Seguin. A proof of residency is required. Accepted items include: junk disposal, scrap metal, appliances (without Freon), a maximum of 10 automobile tires (no larger than 19.5”). Texans Reaching Out

The St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will have its “Texans Reaching Out” fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 28 at The Texas Theatre. There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres, beverages, and a live auction. The Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation will have its 10th Annual Race to Raise 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29 at Pecantown Books & Brews. The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS is now a free digital newspaper published every business day.
