Golfers from across Texas, the nation in Seguin this weekend
Public invited to dance featuring Tejano sensation Marcos Orozco
(Seguin) -- Seguin is being inundated with golfers this weekend.
Amateur golf members belonging to the Pan-American Golf Association began arriving in Seguin Thursday for the 2024 National PAGA Winter Meeting and Golf Tournament.
Toyo Amador, who serves as the group’s secretary, says hosting the event is a prestigious honor.
He says the event is bringing in golfers from all over the country.
“We have 235 golfers signed up for the weekend. Half of them will bring their wives. There is a number of chapters in the state
of Texas. There’s 28 chapters in Texas. The remainder are throughout the Midwest. We even have chapters in Detroit, Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kansas and we have them all over South Texas, the Valley, El Paso, Odessa -- the Midland area. It’s a strong amateur golf organization. A lot of our chapters, they all award scholarships at the local level. So, this is precisely what we are doing with our national tournament so a lot of the money that is raised will go back into our community in the form of scholarships,” said Amador.

Cat show to host two-day competition in Seguin
(Seguin) - Calling all cat lovers. Seguin will play host this weekend to the Kittens and Blooms, International Cat Show at the Seguin Coliseum. The show and adoption event will be held Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event is being hosted by the Mission City Cat Club (MCCC) and the International Cat Association (TICA).
Toni Jones, co-show manager, says residents are invited to come out and watch as champion cats, altered cats and household pets, both cats and kittens, compete for the best of the best in 18 judging rings.
“This show is licensed by the International Cat Association which is the world’s largest genetic registry in the world of pedigree cats. We have over 8,000 members worldwide right now. Our show showcases upwards of 70 breeds. There’s going to be at least 50 breeds in Seguin this weekend and these cats are all competing for regional and international points and titles,” said Jones.
Jones says appearance, grooming, health, temperament and personality are among the things that the prestigious judges will be looking for this weekend.
“A cat show is not quite like a
Free Adventure Day in Seguin
Free family fun for all families
(Seguin) -- Seguin this Saturday is invited to have a free Adventure with Girl Scouts.
Sarah Carlson, the director of marketing and communications with Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, says Girl Scouts will host three hours of family fun
dog show. We don’t want them to do tricks and run. That’s really not a good thing for a cat but it is confirmation judging much like a dog show and the cats all have written standards and that’s what they are judged for. We have judges coming from South America and all over the United States this year to evaluate these cats,” said Jones.
Although the show is closed this weekend for new entries, Jones encourages anyone who thinks they might be interested to come out and talk with them with hopes of getting their cat entered next year. Show, pg. 3
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Texas Lutheran University.
"This is part of our big Centennial Celebration. Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas just turned 100 on March 11. So, we have a year of events. Our council is over 21 counties. We are headquartered in San Antonio but we are coming to and doing events throughout our council area so Seguin obviously is in our council and we wanted to come do a fun day up there. We've tied our Centennial -- we have an exciting project coming at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center in San Antonio. It's called the Backyard. It's going to be an outdoor multi use space where we are encouraging girls to get outdoors. Girls can learn a lot of different outdoor skills there. We hope for it to open in 2025.

Show, continued.
“We are working with Feral Cat Coalition of San Antonio this year. They are our benefactor. This is a charity show. Not only do we try to make money so we can put on another show next year, we always try to help some organization either in San Antonio, Seguin, this area, this whole South Texas area and this year, our organization that we are going to be donating is the Feral Cat Coalition of San Antonio and people can come and talk with breeders, learn about pedigree cats, learn about domestic cats. Also, our organization treats all cats equally whether you are a pedigree cat or what we call a household cat. They all compete for titles and things like that so if you just have your regular street cat that has been your family pet, you can register them and show them and they can compete just like a pedigree cat can,” said Jones.
A host of vendors will also set up shop inside the Coliseum selling items such as cat toys, harnesses, hammocks, beds, jewelry, Scentsy, plus much much more.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and children ages 5 to 12.
Tickets will be available at the door or in advance at https://www.ticketleap.events/events/mission-city-catclub
Golfers, continued.
The national organization was founded in 1947 in San Antonio.
The local chapter in Seguin has over the years remained active helping to encourage a post secondary education for local students.
It also just recently hosted its annual community wide Easter Egg Hunt in Seguin -- a tradition that is at least 50 years old.
On Saturday, golfers will be teeing off at Max Starcke Park, Landa Park in New Braunfels and at the Olmos Golf Course in San Antonio.
Amador says the players will then return to Seguin on Saturday night for dinner and live music.
“On top of the tournament, we are also hosting a dance Saturday evening which will be April 6 at the El Fiesta Ballroom and we are bringing Marcos Orozco Y Grupo Rebelde and we are also bringing
the Conjunto Cats which is a very popular conjunto from here in Seguin so we are looking forward to that. The dance consist of a dance and also a dinner for the participants. We are also opening up (the dance) to the public so anyone who is wanting to join us, we are selling pre-sale tickets for the event. The tickets are $20 pre-sale and then we are charging $25 at the door so we are looking forward to the community to come join us. We have already sold a number of tickets. People are calling and reserving their tables so we are looking forward to having a packed Fiesta Ballroom that evening,” said Amador.
Again, dance tickets for the public are $20 pre-sale or $25 at the door. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased by calling Amador at 830-3059564.
The dance will be held 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday at the El Fiesta Ballroom.
Adventure, continued.
So, that is why we have kind of an adventure theme for this year that we've been talking about - Your Year of Adventure -getting girls excited about doing all different types of adventure and that includes outdoors. So, we have these Adventure Days that we are doing in several different cities and one of them is in Seguin," said Carlson.
Carlson says the event is extended to any family in Seguin looking for some fun and skillful playing.
"Our Adventure Day is open to the community and open to girls and also tagalongs if your brother wants to come along. That's totally fine and girls and their friends and family can come out -- it's totally family friendly -- and do things like rock climbing, virtual reality, archery, and some fun hands on activities just to get a taste of Girl Scouts, just to have a fun day, a fun way to get outside the home, get away from your screens and come learn new things," said Carlson.
Other events slated for the day include outdoor art, robotics, an obstacle course plus a variety of lawn games.
Although it's not necessary, the group is encouraging families to RSVP to help ensure the proper accommodations.
Sign-up is available at gsswt100.org.
Eclipse safely with vision protection!
(Seguin) -- Experts are warning people to be safe when viewing the upcoming solar eclipse.
Ophthalmologist Nitin Kumar says that while everyone wants to see it, it's important to remember they're still looking at the sun.
"It's really really bad to look at the sun. You should not look at the sun. There are many ways to
look at it either directly through a filter or indirectly," said Kumar.
Dr. Kumar describes what people are actually doing when they look at the eclipse.
"They look directly at the sun. What they are doing is -- they are basically using a magnifying glass to focus the sun's light directly onto their retina," said Kumar.
Kumar says that while people look at the sun often, events like
this pose a more serious danger.
"Solar retinopathy happens all the time. Most people aren't interested in looking at the sun except for when these types of events happen," said Kumar.
Looking at the sun unprotected, even briefly, can cause permanent eye damage.
Experts recommend wearing eyewear specifically approved for viewing the eclipse.

The average monthly prescription fill rate was eleven percent lower in the first half of last year than it was in the first half of 2022.
