Let the construction BEGIN!

Rudeloff Road

Phase I on its way

(Seguin) -- A major stretch of Rudeloff Road is finally getting a major facelift.

The Seguin City Council last week approved a construction contract with Sterling Delaware for work on Rudeloff from Highway 46 to Huber Road.

Assistant Director of Capital Projects and Engineering

Jennifer Shortess says this project has been a long time coming.

“In 2015, the grant application was filed with TxDOT and then 2017, the funding was awarded to the city of Seguin for this project and based on various changes, based

on COVID, based on other delays, based on TxDOT, we have this long timeline, and we are so excited that the construction award has the potential of being awarded tonight to Texas Sterling,” said Shortess.

The project calls for the widening of Rudeloff Road from two to four lanes with a center turn lane. It will also include space for bicycle and pedestrian travel.

Councilman Jim Lievens represents that area, and he says the growth continues to come to that part of town.

Seguin preparing for Great American Solar Eclipse Library, parks available for gathering

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Public Library doesn’t want you to stop by today for some free glasses. It wants you to come out and watch today’s Great American Solar Eclipse as a community.

Library Director Silvia Christy says

the library has been preparing a long time for today’s Solar Eclipse Watch Party. She says no matter what happens here in Seguin, they will make sure that folks are witness to this rare natural phenomenon. Eclipse, pg. 3

Construction, continued.

“This is extremely exciting news to have Rudeloff Road finally turning dirt on it hopefully next month. This is the number one concern for residents on that north side. It’s all I hear about so this is just exciting,” said Lievens.

Lievens says he hopes that the completion of this project will lead to additional projects being tackled in this part of town.

“The whole infrastructure needs of the north side are just begging for work and what is so nice about this is as soon as this -- maybe be completed in an 18-month two year period – (Summer 2026) – that phase two of Rudeloff, hopefully, will be starting and maybe in conjunction with Cordova also starting so the infrastructure needs are so needed on that north side,” said Lievens.

A significant portion of this area is located within the boundaries of the Navarro ISD. Lievens says the growth has been significant and it means that the city will need to invest more in this area.

“When I campaigned 18 months ago for this seat, I

made the comment that and I hate to use the school district as the delineation, but it is easier to say the north side – at that time, Navarro ISD households made up 15 percent of the city’s population and I wondered how long it will be until it was 20 percent. I didn’t think it would take 18 months but Navarro school district taxpayers and now homeowners represent 20 percent of the city’s household and how long will it be until it is 25 percent? So, we also look forward to parks on the north side. We also look forward to the fire station. I know these things are underway but I’m so looking forward to it and Rudeloff Road is just the first step so thank you so much,” said Lievens.

The city received seven sealed bids from contractors bidding on the work. Sterling Delaware had the lowest and best bid of $15.39 million. The significant portion of the funding for the project is coming from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. Once the project is completed, the city will assume maintenance of the roadway.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the project will likely be held at the end of this month, or early next month.

Eclipse, continued.

“We will have free eclipse glasses that we will distribute starting at noon while supplies last. We will host the event from 12 to 2 p.m. and people can come in and enjoy the breath-taking view of the near total eclipse. We are going to have games; shop art and we are going to have a live stream of the eclipse in case inclement weather in our community meeting room.

Christy says although the near total eclipse in Seguin will only take a few minutes, Seguin is invited to spend the rest of the time having fun.

“We are also going to hand out tickets for a chance to win a telescope. We are going to have a drawing that day to celebrate this great event. We are going to have snacks for people who come in. Those are going to be space themed snacks. We are also going to have commemorative buttons. We are going to have a lot of things that we are going to raffle, stickers all sorts of things for kids to enjoy and the adults that come

with them,” said Christy.

Christy says the city has been working to prepare the community for this event. And as the library, they couldn’t afford having people miss out on the learning opportunity.

I know that we are not going to be the only ones.

I know the parks department as well as Main Street Main Street has been distributing glasses and the parks department has been inviting people to come into the parks and view the eclipse as well. But for us, it’s very important because again, it’s an education event but if we can make it fun at the same time, we can reach more kids, more adults and make this event a community event and inviting them to come in and enjoy it in a safe place is very important as well,” said Christy.

Again, glasses will be given out on a first come, first serve basis beginning at noon. Attendees are also encouraged to share a pair so that as many people as possible can view the eclipse.

Seguin’s Camryn Rios establishes school HOME RUN RECORD

(Seguin) -- Seguin junior Camryn Rios broke the school’s single season home run record with her 12th homer of the season as the Lady Matadors run-ruled Kerrville-Tivy, 20-9 on Friday night at the Fields at Huber Ranch.

Rios went 3-for-4 with seven runs batted in on the night to lead Seguin to the District 26-5A victory. Four other Lady Mats also blasted dingers in the win. Chloe Belicek, Erin Johnston, Marissa Torrence and Brylee Wieding each went yard as Seguin evened up their district mark at 5-5.

Madyson Schultze earned the victory in the circle for the Lady Matadors, tossing four and a third innings of relief allowing no earned runs. The Lady Antlers scored eight unearned runs in the second inning, but Schultze would silence the Tivy bats allowing just three hits and one unearned run while

striking out eight. The win for Seguin avenges a 5-1 loss to the Lady Antlers in Kerrville back on March 12th.

The Lady Matadors will next host San Antonio Wagner on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Huber Ranch.

In other high school softball action on Friday night:

(San Antonio) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers wrapped up a playoff berth with a 25-3 run-rule win at San Antonio Kennedy.

Shelbie Stevens and Madi Gilliam each launched home runs for Navarro in the victory. Sarah Falor went 4-for-4 on the evening. The Lady Panthers are 6-1 in District 28-4A and in second place, one game behind first place Cuero.

Navarro will take on third place Gonzales on Tuesday. Navarro beat Gonzales, 4-3 in Geronimo on March 22nd.

Jahns

Beth Jahns, age 89, of Seguin, passed away on April 3, 2024. Beth was born on January 14, 1935, in Ennis, Texas, to Nellie Sue (Littlejohn) and Robert Foy Browning. The family eventually moved to Dallas where Beth spent most of her growing up years.

She worked at Brooks Air Force Base for many years before retiring in 1994. Her work ethic and professionalism were superb; she paved the way for a woman to be successful in a man’s world. She would sometimes share how she had to dress in skirts, hose, and heels. Today, we cannot even imagine!

Beth loved to cook and made the most delicious meals for her family and friends. Most of us cannot think of one bad thing she made. While we might try to replicate one of her memorable dishes, we will be hard pressed to do so. Her grandchildren have fond memories of hot blueberry muffins with butter, her homemade pickles, prickly pear jelly, and her famous Texas Trash that was even served as communion at one of her granddaughters’ weddings!

She also enjoyed traveling with Lee and friends, Fred & Janet Owen. Adventure was welcomed, and the outdoors brought her joy. She loved fishing at the tank behind their house, too, and even mounted a trophy bass caught in that very tank. This former city girl had gone country. Beth would often tell a story about helping Lee pull a calf.

Her zest for mowing, gardening, and canning was unsurpassed. One of her favorite pastimes was quilting with her wonderful quilting group; she loved every minute of her time doing it.

Some of her grandchildren expressed their memories of Grandma by describing her as enthusiastic and interested in what they were doing in their lives as well as her infectious smile and laugh. She was an encourager

and very intentional with the kids. She wanted each one to feel celebrated. Her warm hugs will always be missed. Beth was proud of all her children and grandchildren. The gift of encouragement will be her legacy.

Her life was not always easy, but she was steadfast in the promises of God. She was a member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church where she faithfully served the Lord for over 40 years. She donated her time, talents, and cookies on a regular basis to various groups at Emanuel’s.

Beth is preceded in death by her parents, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 40 years, Lee Jahns; children, Danny Logan (Kristie); Patti Tucker (David); Leanne Thompson (Alan); and Ryan Jahns (Nancy); grandchildren, Alicia, Tamra, Ellen, Jessica, Katherine, Kendall, Abby, Hannah, Jill, Ty, Meg, & Todd; nine greatgrandchildren; a sister, Barbara Fox; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and many friends.

While the last several years may have robbed her of her memory, she is now completely healed and experiencing God’s goodness. We will rejoice knowing she is truly free!

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024, at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church with the Reverend Marcus Bigott officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. A reception will follow in Emanuel’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dan Logan, David Tucker, Ryan Jahns, Alan Thompson, Ty Jahns, and Todd Jahns.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Windsor Rehabilitation for their loving care.

Memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, 206 N. Travis, Seguin, Texas, 78155, or to the charity of one’s choice.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Biden Highlights Efforts To Lower Prescription Drug Costs (Washington, DC) -- President Biden is laying out his efforts to lower health care costs for Americans. During a White House event on Wednesday alongside Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Biden said seniors on Medicare will not have to pay more than two-thousand dollars per year for prescription drugs starting next year under the Inflation Reduction Act. He also celebrated the decision by three of the four largest inhaler manufacturers to cap the cost of inhalers for many patients at 35-dollars per month. Biden went on to criticize his political rival Donald Trump, claiming Trump wants to get rid of the Inflation Reduction Act and the Affordable Care Act.

Cancer Rates Expected To Rise Over The Next Two Decades (Undated) -- A new report from this year’s Global Cancer Statistics says cancer cases will continue to rise over the next 20 years. A co-author of the report says the projection is due to both an aging population and unhealthy lifestyle choices. By 2050 it’s expected that 35-million people will be diagnosed annually.

Alabama Hospital To Stop IVF Treatments

(Mobile, AL) -- Another Alabama hospital plans on stopping all IVF treatments by the end of this year. On Wednesday, Mobile [[ Moh-Beel ]] Infirmary said “it will no longer be able to offer” in vitro fertilization services due to “litigation concerns” surrounding the treatment. The decision follows Alabama’s Supreme Court ruling that anyone who destroys frozen embryos can be held liable for wrongful death. After the court’s decision in February, three hospitals stopped offering IVF treatments the following week.

Florida Women’s Clinics To Help Those Seeking Abortions (Orlando, FL) -- A group of women’s clinics in Florida are working on a plan to help patients who are trying to get an abortion. Tampa Bay Times reports that nine facilities between Naples and Orlando held an emergency meeting yesterday morning about the issue. A new law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy is set to take effect next month after Monday’s state Supreme Court ruling. For women who don’t meet the requirement, the clinics say they will help connect them to organizations that will help pay for an out-of-state trip to receive the procedure.
