Matador Get Active day deemed a success

Special needs kids tackle the fun at Matador Stadium

(Seguin) -- Wednesday was not only a great day to be a Matador. It was also a great day to “get active.” Seguin ISD’s special athletes took to the field at Matador Stadium for a day of fun and exercise activities. The activities were all part of Matador Get Active, an opportunity for special needs students from across the district to engage in some great outdoor fun.

Whether it was kicking the ball into the goal or swinging for the fences, students were literally having a ball with laughs and smiles across the turfed football field.

Enjoying the sights and sounds on that field was Stacy Nolen, the adaptive physical education teacher for the Seguin ISD. Nolen says thanks to a couple of sports and recreations for all (dis)abilties organizations and inclusion groups, the field day event was a success for students from elementary to high school. Adults invited to learn how to earn a degree in manufacturing

(Guadalupe County) – If you are looking to secure a degree in the manufacturing industry then tonight’s information session at the Central Texas Technology Center might just be the place in which to start.

The Texas State Technical College (TSTC) and the TX FAME Lone Star Chapter announce a preview event at the chapter’s FAME Technical Center located inside of the technology facility located in northern Guadalupe County.

This event will serve as an informational session and tour for all individuals and their families who are interested in a career in advanced manufacturing and are available to begin courses in August 2023.

Texas Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (TX FAME) is a partnership of regional manufacturers whose purpose is to implement dualtrack, apprenticeship-style training that will create a pipeline of highly skilled workers. Industry leaders say the purpose of TX FAME is to be catalyst for developing world-class technical talent for manufacturing. They say that TX FAME strives to be a conduit between industry and training providers with a primary focus on meeting the needs of manufacturers.

Chapter President Jason Dinscore says TX FAME Lone Star Chapter (LSC) students have the opportunity to earn a degree with little or no debt and gain experience that starts their future off on the right foot.

“This hands-on, paid experience is ideal for all. Women, military veterans, incumbent manufacturing technicians, graduating seniors -- the sky’s the limit,” said Dinscore.

TX FAME Lone Star Chapter participants attend classes two days a week and work at a sponsoring manufacturer for a competitive wage and a minimum of 24 hours each week.

This work-and-learn format gives students the opportunity to immediately apply what they learn on campus in a real-world setting at work. Students who complete the five-semester Advanced Manufacturing Technician program receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and often graduate with zero studentloan debt.

The program also addresses common workplace behavior issues that may frustrate employers by incorporating critical personal skills into the curriculum. Behaviors including attendance, communication, diligence, teamwork, interpersonal relations, and initiative are emphasized both in the classroom and at the workplace.

With the practical skills gained during their paid work experience, TX FAME LSC graduates frequently take full-time positions with their sponsoring companies. Graduates can also continue their education toward bachelor’s degrees in engineering.

TX FAME Lone Star is currently accepting applications for its first cohort launching in fall 2023. The application is available online at www. lonestarfame.com. To be considered for the program, an applicant must have a high school diploma or GED and meet minimum requirements on standardized tests in English, math and reading.

Among the companies that students in the program can work for are Alamo Industrial (Seguin, Texas), Caterpillar Inc. (Seguin and Schertz, Texas), Cavco Industries (Seguin, Texas), CMC Steel Texas (Seguin, Texas), Continental (New Braunfels, Texas), Detex Corp. (New Braunfels, Texas), Minigrip (Seguin, Texas), Hexcel (Seguin, Texas), H-E-B (San Antonio, Texas), Republic Plastics (Seguin, Texas), Texas Tito’s (New Braunfels, Texas) and Vitesco Technologies (Seguin, Texas).

TSTC is a coeducational two-year institution of higher education offering courses of study in technical vocational education for which there is demand within the state of Texas.

The Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) network is employer-led chapters sponsoring students through a work/learn model over five semesters in conjunction with a college partner.

The informational night will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Texas Technology Center located at 2189 FM 758 New Braunfels TSTC recruiters will be on-site to assist anyone wanting to begin their application.

“This has just been a wonderful partnership between Seguin ISD and the Believe It Foundation as well as Kinetic Kids. This is just a wonderful opportunity for the kids to come out and showcase their skills and to be introduced to our new round of adaptive bikes from the Believe It Foundation,” said Nolen.

She says not only was the day planned with no limits but was a priceless opportunity for those witnessing the fun along the sidelines.

“This is a get active day. Kinetic Kids has come out here and set up four sport based skilled stations. We’ve got football. We’ve got baseball. We’ve got soccer and we’ve got track and field and then our fifth station is the adaptive bikes from the Believe It Foundation and so with that partnership between Kinetic Kids and the Believe It Foundation, we are just having a great time,” said Nolen.

A place where everyone can play is exactly what made local mom Laura Schmidt excited for her children. Schmidt says it was great to watch both of her children from Rodriguez Elementary School be engaged in activities that are not always possible for her family.

“I think they need to do this actually more often. These kids don’t get a lot of activity, so they don’t have good muscle tone. So, this is getting them out there, getting their muscle tone together. They are learning to be with other children, which is a big issue with Autism. They have a lot of anxiety, and my kids are very excited to see some of their friends that they haven’t seen in a while so I think we should do this way more often. I’m glad it’s back,” said Schmidt.

Hoping to make the event a tradition from here on out is Kelly Follis, the Seguin ISD director of community outreach and executive director for the Seguin Education Foundation. Follis says it didn’t take long for her office to learn that the Matador Get Active Day was exactly what the community wanted.

“The community was quick to respond. I just sent out a little email talking about some programs that we have coming up in the district and I got immediate response on this event because I think people really see the need and they want to let children with special needs enjoy the same kind of things that other students get to enjoy on a routine basis,” said Follis.

The support for the event, however, did not stop with a check. Follis says some of the supporters also joined the students on the field.

“Parker Lumber is a major sponsor as is Angel Pest Control. We have volunteers from Parker out here. We have a volunteer from Riverside ER in New Braunfels. Kona Ice is coming out later and that’s partially sponsored by those other sponsors but also by Kona Ice themselves. People really just want to help. It’s a beautiful day and I just think our kids are going to have a great benefit from this and our community wants to be a part,” said Follis.

District officials say it’s been years since an event like this for special needs students has been held. Years ago, students competed in what was called the Matador Special Olympics at Texas Lutheran University’s Bulldog Stadium. This event, however, was not a competition but more of a fun day and opportunity to take part in sports related activities.

Serena Gonzalez Named National Player of the Week

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran freshman designated player Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week following her performance in TLU’s three-game sweep of Southwestern over the weekend.

Gonzalez batted . 714 on the weekend with two home runs, eight RBIs and a double for a 1.714 slugging clip. The freshman Corpus Christi native registered her second three-hit game of her career in Saturday’s run-rule win over the Pirates, finishing 3-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBIs. In Wednesday’s 4-3 win, Gonzalez went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and two walks.

On the season, Gonzalez is hitting .434, which ranks sixth in the SCAC, leads the team with 36 RBIs and leads the SCAC and is ranked seventh nationally with eight home runs. Gonzalez is one homer shy of tying the TLU freshman home run record held by Haley Padilla (9, 2018).

The honor marks Gonzalez’s first career national player of the week accolade following her first conference honor on Monday.

Josefina Cañas, age 84 of Seguin, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2023. “Fina” was born in Mexico to Josefina and Jose Salud and lived most of her life in Seguin. She was a member of St. James Church and St. Ann’s Circle and found strength in her faith and family.

Fina is preceded in death by her parents and 12 siblings. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Angel Cañas; daughter Dr. Fina Barouch and her husband Dan; granddaughters, Susanna and Natalie; older sister Elisa; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends.

The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin, Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Canon Stanislaw Fiuk officiating. Patti Jean Koenen, age 68 of Seguin, passed away on March 16, 2023, after battling COPD and lung cancer. Patti was born December 14, 1954, to E. Patricia Walsh and Charles William Volkert Jr. in Dover, New Jersey. She married Charles Everett Koenen, Sr. on September 30, 1972 in New Jersey. They had four children together and relocated to Texas in 1984. Patti was “Nana” to 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Patti is preceded in death by her parents and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She is survived by her former husband, Charles Everett Koenen, Sr. and their four children, Charles Everett Koenen, Jr. (wife Carol), Kevin Koenen (wife Athena), Stephen Koenen (wife Casey), and Stephanie Adams (husband Albert); her grandchildren Cambry Terry (husband Cory), Lindsay Pennington (husband Bailey), Kaylie Koenen, Haylie Koenen, Lathan Koenen, Katalina Adams, Tyler Koenen, Raelee Adams, Kaylin Koenen, Tripp Adams, and Kaydence Koenen; and great-grandchildren Carter and Callan Terry, and Brooklyn Pennington. Esther Elizabeth Schmidt, age 97 of Seguin, passed away on April 11, 2023. Esther was born on May 5, 1925 in Belmont, Texas to Rella (Cheatham) and Marvin Preuss.

Esther is preceded in death by her loving husband, Adlai Schmidt, her daughter, Nancy Goodwin, her parents and her brothers, Marvin, Eugene and Glenn Preuss.

WH Releases Plan To Disrupt Fentanyl Supply Chains

(Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration is laying out plans to disrupt the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. The plan includes issuing sanctions to financially cripple illegal drug syndicates in Mexico and ramping up efforts to target money laundering activity related to drug trafficking. The White house is also calling on Congress to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs. More than 70-thousand Americans died in 2021 from fentanyl overdoses.

Weight Loss In Older Adults Linked To Early Death

(Undated) -- A new study finds weight loss in older adults could be associated with an early death. The study, published this week in JAMA Network Open, found that even a five-percent weight loss increases the risk of death in people over 65, especially men. Researchers say that the correlation doesn’t mean weight loss causes death, but rather could indicate underlying health conditions.

Flesh-Eating Bacteria Kills San Diego Man

(San Diego, CA) -- A San Diego man is dead after contracting necrotizing fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating bacteria. Jeff Bova’s ordeal started nearly a month ago when he chased his dog into a pond. His mother, Susan MacIntyre, says the bacterial infection began as a small red dot on his arm, later becoming swollen and steadily getting worse. She says he didn’t like going to the doctor and tried to take care of it on his own. By the time he couldn’t handle the pain anymore and went to the hospital, it was too late. He died two days later. Experts say necrotizing fasciitis isn’t contagious and it’s rare, but it is serious and results in death in around 20-percent of the people it infects. It’s often found in warm brackish water and enters the body through a broken skin barrier.

Festival For Life

Rose Painting Class

The Seguin Art League will offer a Rose Painting Class from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at 104 S. Austin St. in Seguin. Learn the steps to complete your own yellow rose of Texas. Texans Reaching Out

The St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will have its “Texans Reaching Out” fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 28 at The Texas Theatre. There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres, beverages, and a live auction. Kiwanis Club Flapjack Jamboree

The Seguin Kiwanis Club will have its Kiwanis Club Flapjack Jamboree from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29 in the parking lot adjacent to the First Methodist Church on N. Austin St. in Seguin. Plates of pancakes and sausage are $10 each. This is a drive-thru event and the Navarro Jazz band will be providing live music. Race to Raise 5K Run/Walk

The Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation will have its 10th Annual Race to Raise 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29 at Pecantown Books & Brews. Earth Day Festival/Spring Trade Day

Seguin’s 16th Annual Earth Day Festival and Spring Trade Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at Central Park in downtown Seguin. Residents can learn how to live a greener lifestyle and how Seguin can become a healthier, more sustainable community. Businesses, schools, organizations, and industries will show how to protect the environment and conserve natural resources. Musical groups will perform in the bandstand and there will be activities for children. There will be over 80 vendors throughout downtown selling crafts, jewelry, food, clothes, toys, and more.

Mid-Texas Symphony

The Mid-Texas Symphony will present, “Symphonie Fantastique,” at 4 p.m. Sunday, April. 30 in Jackson Auditorium on the campus of Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. The event features Akiko Fujimoto, conductor, and John Henry Crawford, cello.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS is now a free digital newspaper published every business day.
