Free disposal of items for city residents only

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – It’s time to do a little spring cleaning. The city of Seguin is again offering residents an opportunity to get rid of unwanted items during the 2024 Spring CleanUp Day this Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. Organizers say the clean-up will be held rain or shine.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the city’s public information officer, says this is a prime opportunity for citizens to clear out their yards and homes of unwanted or broken items. She says residents can leave it up to the city to get it disposed of properly.

“Seguin residents are encouraged to bring discarded items from around the home for free disposal at the Seguin Events Complex (Coliseum) parking lot.

Rain or shine, Seguin 5K River Run/Walk a go

(Seguin) – On your marks, get set, race. Sign-up is still available for this Saturday’s annual Seguin 5K River Run/Walk.

The chip timed event is hosted annually by Faith Lutheran Church. Proceeds from this year’s event will go to support the South Texas Pregnancy Care Center which is set to open in its new location on East Kingsbury Street next month.

This year’s 5K fundraiser will get underway at the Dance Pavilion located outside the Seguin Coliseum.

Among the organizers is Carlee Goetz. Goetz say the event is simply about fellowship and getting out and enjoying the local river.

"The weather is supposed to be pretty in the morning. The cool front is supposed to blow in in the evening.

It's going to be a great opportunity to get out and see arguably the most beautiful part of our little town which is along the river. We run right along the river. You will be able to sign up day of the race and we have ordered lots of extra t-shirts. So, there's a good chance even if you just show up and sign-up day of race that you will still get a t-shirt and there will be music and lots of folks to just visit with and so it should be a beautiful morning," said Goetz.

Awards will be given to the top two males and females in the various age groups ranging from 5 to 10 to 66 to 99.

No matter the level of competition a person is looking for, Goetz says the event is designed for all skill levels.

"It's a run/walk. So a lot of us will not be running if you just want to walk, stroll, push your kids in a stroller, all excellent options to do in the morning. So, come on out," said Goetz.

Again strollers and wellmannered dogs on a leash are welcomed.

Online registration will close at noon Friday. Late registration will be held in person on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. in the front office of Faith Lutheran Church located at 1326 E. Cedar St. Registration will also be available on the day of the race from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. at the dance pavilion.

Opening ceremonies will be held from 8:15 to 8:30 a.m. followed by the 5K start at 8:30 a.m. and awards at 9:30 a.m. Entry fee is $30 for adults and $20 for kids ages 1 to 18.

Texas Ladies State Championship Chili Cookoff returns to Seguin

(Seguin) -- The world's largest all female chili cook-off returns to Seguin this weekend. Over 150 female chili cookers from across the state and nation will be heating up the competition during the 53rd Annual CASI Texas Ladies State Chili Championship Cook-off.

Cooks and their RVs continue to arrive today at Max Starcke Park East. The prestigious cook off is not only for the ladies but also for Junior Miss cooks. To help make the event a success, judges are especially needed. Over 300 judges alone are needed for this competition.

Those interested will judge an average of 10 to 12 chili’s during their tasting experience. No judging experience is necessary, just a taste for chili. Beverages and condiments will be provided. Those who register for judging will have preferential seating assignments. The sooner a

person registers, the higher round that they will judge. Coordinators say there is likely to be six rounds of judging. Judges will be seated starting at 12:45 pm on Saturday. If a judge is not present to judge during the round they are assigned, then they will lose that spot.

The community is also encouraged to come out and check out the vendors and take part in Saturday activities to include a silent auction, a drawing and a 50/50 raffle.

Those interested in deciding on who takes home the crown are asked to visit the group's Facebook page or website. To sign-up on the group's website visit tlscco.com.

Clean-Up, continued.

Participants are required to provide proof of residency in the city limits by showing a photo ID or utility bill. City employees will be available to assist residents with unloading items from vehicles and trailers,” said Sourdellia.

Accepted items include junk disposal, scrap metal, appliances without Freon and paper shredding.

A maximum of 10 automobile tires will also be accepted. However, no tractor-trailer, mower, bicycle, or ATV tires will be collected. Tires with rims or tires larger than 19.5 inches are not allowed. Tires from local businesses will also not be accepted.

As mentioned, paper shredding will be available as a

free service at the event. Residents can bring any documents containing sensitive information for secure on-site shredding and disposal. Up to two bags or boxes will be accepted for shredding.

While most items will be accepted, there are those items that will not be collected during Saturday’s Clean-Up. Those items include hazardous material or chemicals; brush and limbs; fences, sheds, construction materials or debris; and appliances with Freon.

The Seguin Coliseum parking lot is located at 950 S. Austin St. Again, proof of residency will be required.

Residents with additional questions are asked to call the Public Works Department at (830) 401-2416 or visit

Marion’s Kelli Cielencki signs college cross country commitment

(Marion) -- Marion High School senior Kelli Cielencki will continue her academic and athletic career in Waxahachie, Texas.

Cielencki, a star cross country student-athlete for the Lady Bulldogs, signed her name on paper to attend Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in front of classmates, coaches, friends and family at the high school on Wednesday.

Cielencki competed in the girls Class 3A 3200 meter race at the UIL Cross Country State Championships last November. In October, she had a stellar performance at the UIL Region IV Class 3A Cross Country Meet in Corpus Christi with a time of 13 minutes and 22.39 seconds despite very humid conditions. Cielencki improved on that time by nearly 10 seconds at the state meet.

Cielencki will study business administration and church leadership at SAGU, a private Christian university. She hopes to enter into ministry after graduation. Cielencki says she will miss her teammates and coaches in Marion.

“I can remember the losses, the wins, everything but the people here make the most of an impact,” Cielencki said. “My teammates, my coaches, the staff, they’ve been there for me every second of the way, supporting me everywhere I go. So, I think that’s what I’ll miss the most.”

Also a lead-off batter for the Marion softball team, Cielencki was a first team all-district outfielder for the Lady Bulldogs in 2023. She is batting .410 for head coach Sammy Scribner this year.

Marion took the District 26-3A softball title this season and will compete in the UIL Bi-District round next week. The Lady Bulldogs and Cielencki will host District 26-3A rival Randolph for Senior Night on Friday at the Marion High School softball/baseball complex.

Virginia Tech Researchers Developing Portable COVID-19 Test (Blacksburg, VA) -- Researchers at Virginia Tech are working on a portable test that could be used to determine whether COVID-19 is present in the air. The ongoing research project is designed to simplify current air testing methods that are often bulky, noisy and take days to process. The project leader envisions a test that allows the user to collect an air sample using a large bag. The air collected would be pushed into a filter that could process the sample and determine if the virus is present within 15 minutes. Researchers say the test is still several years from being marketed commercially.

Rat Urine Disease Hits Record High In 2023 (New York, NY) -- Disease spread by rat urine is on the rise in New York City. Officials say last year there were a record high 24 cases of Leptospirosis, a disease spread by bacteria in the urine of infected rats. There are six cases this year. The numbers have prompted The Department of Mental Health and Hygiene to issue a health advisory. Mayor Eric Adams’ administration has taken a series of steps to try and reduce the rat population. Adams says it is working because there are fewer rat complaints and says more progress should be felt in the next couple years.

Psychologists Warn Against Social Media And Young People (Undated)

-- Social media platforms are “not inherently suitable for youth,” say top psychologists, and tech companies and lawmakers need to do more to protect kids’ mental health. The American Psychological Association said Tuesday that endless scrolling and push notifications are particularly risky for young people whose brains are still developing. They’re not as capable of pulling back from addictive experiences. The report also said social media can affect school work and sleep. Social media companies like Meta, the parent of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp say they’ve been working to protect children but the APA report says it’s not yet enough.

Military

Facilities At ‘Increased Risk’ of Fuel Spills (Honolulu, HI) -- U.S. Military facilities are at an “increased risk” of fuel spills. That’s according to an investigation by the Pentagon’s Inspector General, released earlier this month. It follows the disaster at the Navy’s underground Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility in Hawaii in November of 2021. Nineteen-thousand gallons of jet fuel spilled, poisoning the water system that serves 93-thousand military personnel and their families on Oahu. The report says military officials have failed to provide proper oversight of fuel facilities. It adds that military facilities are now “at an increased risk of fuel leaks and spills, which could endanger public health, harm natural resources, and lead to mission failure.”
