Residents encouraged to chime in on economic development, the future of Seguin

(Seguin) -- Here’s your chance to chime in on what you would like Seguin’s economic climate to look like in the future.

The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is set to embark on the development of its first-ever Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS).

Josh Schneuker, the executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, says the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy will help develop a unified vision and strategic approach to achieving a robust, resilient economy over the next three years and beyond.

“A vital component of this project will be input from the community at large and other key stakeholders from across the Seguin region to help create a shared economic development vision that will help Seguin continue its positive economic momentum and find new opportunities that will take our local economy to the next level,” said Schneuker.

The CEDS is designed to help Seguin attract and retain businesses that will create primary jobs by focusing efforts that leverage the community’s assets and strengths. The Strategy will also be designed to provide the SEDC, the City of Seguin and other business, education, nonprofit, and public sector leaders with a cohesive action plan that ensures everyone is working in-step toward a shared vision and goals.

Serving as the consultant for the project will be Ernst & Young LLP (EY). EY is a global leader in providing advisory services to public and private sector clients focused on evidence-based results. City officials say its extensive network

of dedicated professionals in over 150 countries allows EY to foster trust and establish long-standing relationships with industry, higher education, and government leaders to accomplish goals, outcomes, and reporting requirements.

EY’s Economic Development Advisory Services (EDAS) team will oversee the project.

The team has decades of economic development experience working with local governments and Economic Development Corporations across Texas and the nation. In Texas alone, EY EDAS has assisted dozens of communities in all corners of the state, from Greater Houston to the DFW Metroplex, from West Texas to East Texas, and in the Greater Austin MSA. EY EDAS also have extensive experience helping communities similar to Seguin, such as Pflugerville, that are fast-growing communities with strong manufacturing centers that are poised to take advantage of regional growth.

The framework will include an

economic development vision for the City of Seguin, which will answer the question “Where do we want to go?” by describing the ideal state of Seguin’s future economy.

Community input will be an important component in developing a strategy that benefits all residents and businesses. To help gather input from across Seguin, the SEDC has launched an online Community Survey. The findings from this survey will inform Seguin’s comprehensive economic development strategy. Input collected from the survey will help shape the future of the community.

EY EDAS will develop the CEDS in three phases. Phase 1 will focus on gaining a deep understanding of the Seguin economy from multiple perspectives to ensure that the subsequent CEDS truly reflects the needs of Seguin residents and businesses and provides achievable goals to help Seguin take advantage of current opportunities and prepare for the future.

Developmen, continued.

Phase 2 of this project will focus on conducting a Targeted Industry Analysis that will identify and validate targeted industries for the City of Seguin. And finally, for Phase 3 of this project, EY will work with the City of Seguin and the SEDC to develop the economic development strategy, which will include documenting the vision, prioritized goals, and measurable objectives.

This CEDS project will require eight months to complete, with an approximate completion date of October 31, 2023. The CEDS Community Survey be accessed by visiting seguinedc.com/ceds. A link for the survey can also be found on the KWED and Seguin Daily News Facebook page or online at SeguinToday.com.

Banquet, continued.

“Being recognized by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the people behind it is a great honor. We have been in Seguin for so many years and we’ve grown our business from a small mom-and-pop to a nationally recognized restaurant featured on CBS News, the Wall Street Journal, on national food network shows and travel channels but we couldn’t do it without the people of Seguin. That’s why we’ve always tried to give back to the community. And, of course without the family, especially my wife, we wouldn’t have the business that we have now. The family is the backbone of the business. I always wished my mom and dad were here to see where this restaurant has gone and we continue to try to build on what they left behind,” said Davila.

This year’s Businesswoman of the Year award went to Yuli Sandoval, of Alex’s Tacos. Sasser who speaks on behalf of the restaurant owner says the chamber recognizes her work ethic and continued contributions.

“Yuli Sandoval has been a really successful businesswoman. She’s been running this business for several years. She’s really the epitome of a successful woman who grows her business from a small taco stand. I find that remarkable to what is now a lovely new restaurant and her work ethic and her ability to do all of this especially since English isn’t her first language,” said Sasser.

Teijin Automotive Technologies was also on hand during the banquet to receive this year’s Corporate Community Award.

Those also receiving recognition included Andrea Jaramillo, Seguin ISD’s chief of innovation and learning,

who received this year’s Academic Merit Award.

Jose Alberto Rincon, the districtwide ballet folklorico instructor in the Seguin ISD and the co-artistic director for Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa, was the recipient of this year’s Daniel Rodriguez Community Service Award.

Presented with this year’s Humanitarian Award was local businesswoman Linda Dietz.

Seguin ISD Mariachi Director Rafael Alarcon was also recognized by the Hispanic chamber with this year’s Youth Leadership Award.

Receiving this year’s Rosita Ornelas Media Award was Henry Ramos, Kens 5 anchor.

The Geronimo VFW Post 8456 was also honored as the recipient of the Hispanic Chamber’s Patriot Award.

Finally, this year’s Pete Garza Business Award was presented to United Alloy.

Sasser says nominations for these awards are accepted and vetted seriously by the Hispanic chamber’s board of directors. She says recognition of their efforts is vital to the growth and preservation of doing business in Seguin.

“We feel very strongly in that as a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that we reach out and we recognize those businesses and corporations in Seguin and Guadalupe County that reflect the values of Seguin and Guadalupe County,” said Sasser.

Rounding out the slate of honorees during this year’s banquet were two special award recipients.

They included Wanda Rosales who received this year’s Chairwoman’s Award and Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen, who was surprised with this year’s Juan Seguin Award.

The Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet was held Wednesday night in the Seguin Coliseum.

Sandra (Sandi) Ann Leibenguth Lankford was one of the most beautiful, strong loving and caring persons anyone would ever want to know. She was loved and cherished by a large number of family and friends.

Sandi passed away peacefully after years of suffering with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis on the 21st day of April, 2023, in the 77” year of her age. Her lovinghusband Roy was with her until her final breath.

“A Soul prepared needs no delays The Summons comes the Saint obeys Swift was her flight, and short the road She closed her eyes and saw her God.”

Sandi was born on September 10, 1945, in Lehighton, Pennsylvania. She was the first of two children born to her parents, Foster John Leibenguth and Fern Elizabeth Wertman Leibenguth. Her parents divorced in about 1952 and Fern later married Frank Derrill Banks who Sandi always considered her Dad. Fern and Derrill then had two additional children to add to the family. Derrill was in the Air Force, so the family moved around. They were stationed in Illinois where Sandi graduated from Mascoutah High School, in 1963. They were later stationed in Washington DC where Sandi began her Civil Service career. The family finally all moved to San Antonio, where she continued her career at Lackland AFB as a Clerk Typist Supervisor.

After meeting at The Golden Stallion Dance Hall in San Antonio in May of 1971, Roy and Sandi were married by Reverend Harold Zirkel at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on February 18, 1972, and then honeymooned in Cloudcroft, NM. From the beginning to the end, Roy called Sandi “Babe” and Sandi calledRoy “Babe”.

Sandi continued to work for 10 years at Lackland AFB until she eventually had to retire due to medical reasons in 1975. At this time, she began taking college classes at SAC to increase her knowledge and education. In 1979, Sandi and Roy moved to Seguin where they built a little house, started a farm and Roy began working for Motorola. At this point, she volunteered for 20 years with her favorite cohort, Dorine Volmer as a Pink Lady and Front Desk Receptionist for Guadalupe Valley Hospital. They had a lot of fun together. After the hospital, Sandi took painting lessons before she started taking Tai Chi lessons. She eventually earned a teaching certificate and began teaching Tai Chi at the Guadalupe Reginal Wellness Center until she was physically incapable of the strain of teaching. Even then she continued with her love of Tai Chi until Covid shut things down. After teaching Tai Chi, Sandi decided she needed something to do in her spare time,

so she started taking Guitar lessons at Dellview Music Center in San Antonio. She took Dobro and Electric Lap Steel Guitar lessons from Don Pack and Denny Mathis for many years loving every minute and every note of music. That was one of her favorite experiences. She loved music. What a wonderful time she had there making music and meeting the local legends of country music.

Roy and Sandi both loved to travel and camp in their earlier years. They camped in many of the national and state parks in Texas, Wyoming, California, Montana, Colorado, Utah and South Dakota. Their favorite place to camp was always Big Bend, just barely ahead of Yellowstone. Then in 1999, they bought their first travel trailer and began going to state parks around Texas and once to Yellowstone. In the trailer, their favorite place to go was Goose Island State Park to meet their buddies, Don and Gayle Pack, drop a line in the water and drink some wine. Besides camping, they were able to travel to Germany, France twice, England, Scotland, and Canada three times and Puerto Rico as well as two cruises to Alaska. In addition to the camping and travels, they were able to attend numerous music concerts including; ZZ Top, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, the Platters, Fleetwood Mac, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, Hayes Carll, Albert Collins and many other groups and performers around Texas.

Sandi and Roy never had children, so Sandi poured her love and time into her animals. Her beloved horses Cajun Queen and Ole Blue: all of her dogs and cats, and hundreds of cows and calves who each had a name. Sandi loved everybody, some not as much as others, but she did love everybody and she loved every animal too. There was never a dog she didn’t want to pet or a horse that didn’t get a nose rub.

Sandi is preceded in death by her father Foster Leibenguth, her mother Fern Banks, her step-father Derrill Banks and her brother Randy Banks. She is survived by her husband of 51 years Roy J. Lankford of Seguin, TX, her sister Gail Hilfiker of La Vernia, TX, her sister Patricia Walden of Windsor, MO and numerous nieces and one nephew.

Serving as pallbearers will be Glenn Targac, Dale Muenzler, Kris Gulleen, Dan Lankford, Ernest Forman and Kenneth Gold.

A visitation will be held Friday, April 28, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral service will follow to celebrate Sandra’s life Friday, April 28, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Cathe Evins officiating at Tres Hewell Mortuary. A private graveside interment of Sandi’s ashes will be in the Lankford/Pritchard plot at the Jones Cemetery in Utopia, TX at a later date.

Memorial contributions in Sandra’s memory may be made to Golden Beginnings Golden Retriever Rescue, Inc. in Houston, Texas. The website is www.gbgrr.org.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www. treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Supreme Court Upholds Ruling On Abortion Pill

(Washington, DC) -- The Supreme Court is pausing lower court rulings that would have disrupted access to the abortion pill mifepristone. The decision comes after the court extended a temporary stay on a Texas federal judge’s ruling to halt production and distribution of the drug. Mifepristone was originally approved by the FDA in 2000 and has been used by over five-million women since. The case now travels back to the Fifth Circuit federal appeals court, where a three-judge panel will hold a hearing on May 17th. A decision will then be issued sometime after, although there is no deadline.

People In Two NJ Towns Are Warned Get Ready To Flee

(Farmingdale, NJ) -- People in two South Jersey towns impacted by toxic chemicals are being warned to get ready to leave ASAP. The Office of Emergency Management in Monmouth County says four-hundred abandoned barrels at a former chemical plant in Farmingdale are posing a toxic threat to folks in that town and in neighboring Howell. OEM Director Victor Cook is advising folks to pack a “go” bag, just in case fires erupt while EPA crews on-site begin to identify and clear out the chemicals. They’ve been known to burn spontaneously, blowing off barrel lids and sending toxic fumes into the air.

Missouri Set to Become First State to Restrict Gender-Affirming Care for Adults

(Jefferson City, MO) -- The state of Missouri is set to become the first state to restrict gender-affirming care for adults. Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s executive order placing barriers on gender-affirming healthcare for minors and adults is set to go into effect Thursday. It’s more restrictive than legislation advancing through the state legislature that would restrict certain care but would exempt those who already receive such healthcare. Bailey -- a Republican -- says such healthcare is experimental, though the American Medical Association and other leading medical groups say it’s been proven safe and effective.

DOH Releases Teen Survey Results

(Honolulu, HI) -- The Hawaii Department of Health has released the results of a teen survey it took during the pandemic. While the numbers are new, the survey was taken in 2021. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows vaping rates among teens fell significantly between 2019 and 2021. Less than 15-percent of middle and high schoolers surveyed said they use e-cigarettes. That’s down from more than 30-percent in 2019. The number of teens who said they had tried an e-cigarette was more than 32-percent, down from more than 48-percent in 2019.
