Today marks last day of early voting

(Seguin) – Today is the final day to cast your ballot early in the Saturday, May 6 Election. Voters will tackle their respective city, school and/or water control improvement district ballot items.

Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says although each of the various races throughout the county have pulled in voters to the polls this past week and a half, she encourages even more of them to come out and take advantage of the early voting convenience.

“We definitely want the voters to take advantage of the last day of early voting. Election Day is this Saturday this year and the May election is always a Saturday, and it seems like there are so many things that we have to do as families and parents and people who work and things like that -- that Saturdays can be a little hectic so take advantage of this Tuesday, last day of early voting and come out and vote. I always think that if the voters can vote during early voting, it makes things just a little bit easier on election day because there is a certain contingent of voters that don’t have any choice but to vote on election day and so we like to have anyone who can vote early vote early. I think it just makes things a little bit more relaxed at the polling place,” said Hayes.

TLU celebrates $2.89 million title grant establishing Buenos Center

(Seguin) – TLU is celebrating its largest competitive grant in the university’s history.

Texas Lutheran University has been awarded a $2.89 million Title V grant from the Department of Education to create the BUENOS Center for Excellence.

The BUENOS (Bulldog Undergraduates Engaging iN Opportunities for Success) Center will meet the needs of TLU’s diverse student population through enhanced and inclusive programs, targeting students who are academically at risk. The center will also develop fouryear plans for all students with integrated academic and career planning. The grant will be funded over five years starting Oct. 1, 2023.

As a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), TLU will use the Title V grant to directly support students with two main project goals: 1) Improve undergraduate degree attainment of Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students by strengthening academic skills for success, and 2) Enhance and expand career development and support for Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students.

“The impact of this grant will be tremendous for TLU, as it builds programs and opportunities across campus to ensure the success of all of our students,” TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell said. “We recognize the importance of intentional and dedicated efforts to meet the needs of our diverse student body, and this grant will allow us to advance these efforts in significant and exciting ways.”

According to Dr. David A. Ortiz, TLU VP for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Principal Investigator of the BUENOS Grant, the university historically enrolled a predominately white and significantly Lutheran student population until the early 1990s. In 1993, only 20 percent of enrolled students were non-white or international. In 2011, TLU officially received HSI status when the Hispanic student enrollment grew to 25 percent.

According to the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, in fall 2022, 42 percent of TLU’s students were Hispanic and 9 percent were African American, making those two groups the majority on campus. Dr. Ortiz sees the BUENOS Center as an excellent way to support all students.

“While enrollment of Hispanic students has steadily increased, their graduation rates still remain below the TLU average,” Dr. Ortiz said. “The BUENOS Center will not only meet the needs of a diverse student population, it will also serve the needs of every TLU student. Title V grants by their definition are designed to help schools like TLU build capacity throughout the university by creating an institutional rising tide that will lift all students

to success.”

Other ways in which the grant will support multiple campus populations will be a focused workshop series called Platicas, the BUENOS Amigos and Mentors (BAM) mentoring program, and an overhauled New Student and Family Orientation experience. Additionally, the funding will allow for the creation of the Holistic Exploration of Careers by Hands-on Opportunity (HECHO) program. HECHO will be designed to ensure students’ career development experiences address personal exploration and experiential learning. Lastly, the grant will allow TLU to establish the Center for Information Equity and Learning Outcomes (CIELO) which will provide an equity lens for data collection, analysis, and programmatic recommendations.

“The award of the Title V grant is great news for Texas Lutheran University and the greater region,” said Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15). “The grant’s investment in student success will benefit a diverse group of students, many of whom are first-generation from Hispanic backgrounds. I am thrilled for the current and future students of TLU who will benefit from the grant both in attaining a college degree and career development.”

Funding will also be designated to professional development for faculty and staff, a series of career and academic development workshops, externships for in-demand jobs, new technology for TLU’s library and Center for Teaching and Learning, and a Spanish for Heritage Speakers program.

The university would also like to acknowledge the work of the TLU grants team: Theresa Spiess ‘06, director of corporate & foundation relations, Dr. Pamela Johnston, professor of English & director of academic grants, Jeff Jandt ‘89, grant analyst, Alyssa Scheel ‘11, Interim associate VP for finance/controller, Co-Principal Investigators Dr. Sarah Ferguson and Dr. Gourjoine Wade, and External Reviewer Alma Adamez, grant writer, Community Council of South-Central Texas.

Voting, continued.

Entities hosting an election this Saturday are the Seguin ISD, San Marcos CISD, the city of Cibolo District 5, the city of Santa Clara, Marion ISD, and both the Lake McQueeney and Lake Placid WCIDs.

Hayes says even though May elections aren’t as popular, the ballot items are still important.

“Throughout all of the elections that we’ve had, we’ve had a little under 3,000 people vote but that’s in every election not in any one specific, but it is a light turnout. May is typically a little bit lighter than November but we want the voters to come out because at this point, if only say five percent of the voters come out and vote, then those five percent are making the decision for everyone in that district,” said Hayes.

Among the featured races locally is the Seguin ISD and its push for a new $7.8 million baseball and softball complex at Seguin High School. In addition, the district is looking to bring back its baseball program to the main campus. High school baseball programs are currently hosted at the city of Seguin’s aging Smokey Joe Field located at the Seguin Events Complex. If approved, the baseball/ softball fields would be constructed together, sharing amenities such as concession stands, restrooms, etc. The new fields would also be turf, allowing the schools to utilize them even when it rains. This past spring has forced either a move or cancellation of a game – often sending teams, their families, and fans two hours away to just play a game.

Marion ISD voters also return to the polls to decide on a $78.8 million bond issue. The bulk of that proposed bond will address security and the expansion and renovation of its high school. This will mark the district’s third attempt at passing a multi-million-dollar bond issue in one year. This latest attempt, however, is a bit different in that it does include a new competitive gym – a facility that is desperately needed

as the area school district faces rapid growth. The current gym is also described as aging, in need of repairs, and again not adequate for the now more than double the number of students enrolled in the district’s middle school and high

school athletic programs.

Hayes says every jurisdiction on the ballot this weekend is necessary and says overall turnout says a lot about who is in control of what happens in a community.

“The total number of registered voters in the Seguin ISD is 29,480 registered voters. So, if you think about that, if you had for example five percent of the registered voters come out and vote in Seguin ISD, that’s 1,474 voters. If you had that many voters making the decisions for the entirety of the school district, it seems to me that everyone’s voice isn’t being heard. Marion ISD has 6,451 registered voters. So I always recommend that the voters come out and vote and take advantage of this opportunity because not every country has the ability to come out for an election or things that affect their day to day life and so, we want to make sure we are taking advantage of that. Come out and vote. Make your voice heard. Have some say on the issues that are on the ballot for our local entity. This is your chance to make a difference,” said Hayes.

Early voting for any of the races will be held today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Guadalupe County Elections Office. Early voting

locations in the Seguin ISD will be open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Those locations include Rodriguez Elementary School, Barnes Middle School, Seguin High School’s Performing Arts Center, and the Seguin ISD Administration Building.

Marion ISD and the City of Santa Clara voters may also cast their ballots early today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Marion ISD Tondre Room, Santa Clara City Hall, and the New Berlin City Hall.

City of Cibolo voters may vote in the Cibolo Fire Station #2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

San Marcos CISD’s early polling location at St. Joseph’s Mission Church will also be open today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Those needing to vote in Lake McQueeney’s WCID Election may stop by either the Lake McQueeney Ski Lodge or Seguin ISD’s Administration Building today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Seguin ISD Administration Building will also host early voting polls for Lake Placid’s WCID Election.

Sanchez Walks it Off as TLU Clinches Outright Regular Season Title in Dramatic Fashion

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball picked up its first walk-off win of the season, beating Southwestern 6-5, to complete the sweep of the Pirates and clinch the 2023 SCAC Regular Season Championship on Sunday at Katt-Isbel Field. The win, in addition to a 5-3 loss by Trinity to St. Thomas in Houston, clinched the SCAC regular season title for the first time in program history for Texas Lutheran (27-13, 17-4 SCAC). The 2023 Championship marks the fourth regular season championship and sixth SCAC Championship overall. Also with the win, TLU matched its best single-season conference winning percentage since joining the SCAC, going 17-4 (.810) for the second consecutive season.

The Bulldogs went into the bottom of the ninth tied when Alec Sanchez (Waxahachie/ Waxahachie) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out and hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to score Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis).

Zach Longshore (Richmond/Ft. Bend Travis) picked up the win in relief, improving to 6-2 on the season, after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing one run and striking out four batters.

Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) and Alec Sanchez both went 2-for-4 at the plate, with Post

hitting a home run for the second day in a row and driving in three runs and Sanchez hitting two singles and the walk-off sacrifice fly.

After being held scoreless and trailing 2-0 through five innings, Texas Lutheran exploded for six runs in the final four innings, while allowing just one Southwestern run after the fourth inning.

For the second game in a row, Tyler Post hit a home run, igniting the Bulldogs rally with a tworun home run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Pirates lead in half. With the home run, Post moves into sole possession of third place on the TLU Baseball all-time home run list with 34 career home runs, trailing former teammate Tyler Cauley (2017-2021, 41) by seven for second place. Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) would walk the next at-bat and work his way around to score on a wild pitch as TLU cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth inning.

Post would tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single down the right field line to score Blake Cappadona (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill). An RBI single from Garcia would score Holden Philippus (San Antonio/San Antonio Christian) and give TLU its first lead of the afternoon at 5-4.

The Pirates knotted the game up 5-5 in the top of the ninth. Three walks loaded the bases and set the stage for senior Alec Sanchez to walk it off for TLU in dramatic fashion to clinch the sweep, the fifth of the season.

Prior to Sunday’s game, Texas Lutheran honored former Texas Lutheran baseball player Mark Love and announced the second annual “Mark Love Award” winner - awarded to the player who demonstrates team leadership, charm, resilience and dependability - with the honors going to senior Kai Hendershot (San Antonio/ Johnson).

RNC Chair Says Republicans Need To Address Abortion Issue

(Washington, DC) -- The chair of the Republican National Committee says party candidates need to address abortion issues “head on.” Speaking on Fox News Sunday, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel said the Republicans’ performance in the midterms fell below expectations because many candidates refused to talk about abortion. Abortion became an even bigger issue in 2022 when Roe v. Wade was overturned just months before the elections. McDaniel said Republicans need to go on the “offensive” and put Democrats on the “defensive” on the abortion issue.

Michael J. Fox Addresses Battle With Parkinson’s Disease

(New York, NY) -- Michael J. Fox is speaking candidly about his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease.
