Seguin encouraged to help fight crime

Residents, businesses urged to register their security cameras

(Seguin) – If you’ve watched the news lately, then you’ve seen how home video surveillance systems have often been attributed with helping to catch a suspect and/or closing a case. This growing and popular trend to install video cameras around your home and business is now the latest crime-fighting tool – a tool that the Seguin Police Department wants to know more about.

The Seguin PD is asking residents and businesses across the city to voluntarily register their privately-owned surveillance systems so that police officers and detectives will know where they can possibly find cameras that may have recorded important evidence and that can help solve a crime.

Sarah Wallace, community engagement officer with the Seguin PD, says the police department believes in a strong partnership with citizens and businesses to help keep the community safe. She says the department is always looking for new ways to work with people to prevent and solve crimes.

“We are just bringing it back. We

have not publicized it as much and it’s one thing that is on our goal list to get out there into the community. It is a total volunteer program and all that it would be is if you have a camera and you are comfortable, you can just sign up and by signing up, you will just be giving us your contact information. For example, John Smith on 123 Main Street has two cameras, and if a crime happens in that area and we are looking for footage and maybe the suspect or the suspect’s vehicle or whatever, we will send an email or a phone call out to John Smith in this example and say ‘hey, we are looking for something in between this time and this time. If you could review your camera footage to see if your camera caught anything. That would be great. Just let us know,’” said Wallace.

In the event that a crime occurs near their property, citizens who have registered through this program may be contacted, notifying them about the crime and requesting access to their video footage for investigative purposes only. Cameras, pg. 3

Princess Ball tickets now on sale

Limited tickets remain for annual father, daughter event

(Seguin) -- The clock will soon strike midnight for this year’s deadline to purchase your Princess Ball tickets, formerly the Cinderella Ball. Now although there isn’t necessarily a deadline for those tickets, officials with the Seguin Police Department don’t expect any remaining tickets to last very long.

This year’s father or father figure/daughter event is scheduled for Saturday, June 10 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum.

Sarah Wallace, the community engagement officer for the Seguin PD, says although a name change, the annual ball will still feature many of the same traditions along with some new changes.

“We are going to be having it catered by Big Daddy BBQ this

year and they are going to be given two different plate options having their own servers so this way we can have a nice, efficient food line and you are not spending too much time in the line. One new thing we

are doing this year is we are going to have three different photo stations instead of one. We took a survey last year with it being my first year seeing what people loved, what people would like improvements on and I just observed myself, there was a lot of time waiting in line. So my goal this year is to be sure that everyone gets to enjoy the event. They get to dance with the beautiful little ones that they are bringing to it. We also will be having Princess Belle here this year so that’s going to be exciting as well,” said Wallace.

Wallace says the most important piece of information is that girls and ladies of all ages are welcome to accompany that important male figure in their life.

Registration now underway for Seguin ISD summer camps

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD is making sure kids have plenty to stay busy this summer. With summer break only two weeks away, the school district is reminding parents to begin planning their kids’ summer activities by taking advantage of several camps being offered by the district.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says this year, several various camps are being offered. He says checking out the district’s website is the first step in planning for summer break.

“It’s hard to believe that the Seguin ISD school year wraps up on Friday, May 26. That’s the last day of school and then on that Tuesday after Memorial Day, parents are going to wonder what do I do with my children for the summer? Well, we at Seguin ISD are again offering a plethora of camp opportunities. Several of these are educational and others are athletic, and we have a one stop location at SeguinISD.net, our website. It says ‘check out Seguin ISD Summer Camps and Programs’ and we have a list of eight camps that are posted right now. So, we are encouraging parents to go look through the offerings and feel free to sign their children up for camps that might interest them whether it be athletic or more academic based,” said Hoffmann. “Many of these camps start up pretty quickly in June and so they are deadline driven and again, we encourage our parents to go and look through those locations. Some camps have a limit on the number of students who can attend so start visiting the website. Go through those listings and be sure to sign your children up prior to those deadlines in order to get them in a camp that they’ll enjoy,” said Hoffmann.

Camps include but are not limited to Camp Mayday, Create to Escape, Middle School Summer Camp, Ace Summer Camp, Strength and Conditioning Camp, Football Camp, Volleyball Camp, Basketball Camp, Soccer Camp, Tennis Camp and Baseball Camp.

“The biggest thing that I would like to stress with this program is we never have access to your cameras without your knowledge and your consent. This isn’t you giving us your password to your camera or us tapping into cameras -- nothing like that. It is simply giving contact info that we can reach out to you and ask ‘hey, would you mind reviewing your video?’ But in no way, would we view anything without their knowledge,” said Wallace. Again, the program is strictly voluntary, and camera owners can opt out at any time.

Christian Ramirez Brings Home Gold and Daisha Shular Earns a Silver Medal for Seguin at State Track Meet

(Austin) -- Seguin High School student-athlete Christian Ramirez won two medals including the gold on Friday at the UIL State Track & Field Meet in Austin.

Ramirez was the winner taking home the gold in the Class 5A wheel chair 400 meter dash. He also placed third in the wheel chair 100 meter to earn a bronze medal. And Ramirez finished in 7th in the wheel chair shot put.

Joining Ramirez in bringing hardware back to Seguin was sprinter Daisha Shular. The sophomore placed second in the girls 100 meter dash to earn a silver medal.

Shular and her sister Ari along with Leah Brown and Kyra Nunez competed in the girls 4X100 meter relay, where the team placed seventh. Daisha Shular was also 9th in the girls long jump.

And for the boys, Seguin’s Devin Matthews, Nik Henry, Ocean Moreno and Elliot Weaver finished in eighth place in the 4X100 meter relay.

Schievelbein Strey VITAL STATISTICS

Brenda Sue Schievelbein, 64, passed away unexpectedly in her home on May 5th, 2023. Her family is deeply saddened by her sudden death.

Brenda was born on March 11th, 1959, in Seguin, Texas to Carole Jean (Schwab) and Virgil Albert Schievelbein. She is the oldest of 4 siblings. She graduated from Seguin High School in 1977 and continued her studies at Southwest Texas State University. Brenda worked as an Optometry Technician and administrative assistant for many years. She was also a member of First Baptist Church in Seguin.

Brenda was a fun spirited soul who embraced many passions. She was very creative and used her talents in many ways including cross stitch, sewing, and art. One of her favorite places was in the sand listening to the waves and soaking up the sun. Brenda also enjoyed baking and cooking. Every Christmas she loved making and sharing her famous “Puppy Chow” with all her friends and family. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. Later in life she took up gardening and was known by her neighbors to have the prettiest front yard. Brenda did not have any children, so her nieces and nephews were her pride and joy. With her beautiful youthful spirit, she always knew how to keep the kids entertained!

Brenda is survived by her mother, Carole Schievelbein; sisters, Cyndi Johnson (Kyle), and Lori McCoy; brother, Timothy Schievelbein (fiancée Kelly Follis); nieces and nephews, Chasity Schneider (Bryan), Kelsey McCoy, Evan Schievelbein (Callie), Andi Schievelbein, Kara Linnens (Corey), and Kylee Johnson; great nieces and nephews, Chance, Tatum, Tripp and Ty Schievelbein, Brynley Grace Schneider and Gracie Belle Linnens; numerous cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

Brenda was preceded in death by her father, Virgil Schievelbein and brother-in-law, Ricky McCoy.

A memorial service celebrating Brenda’s life will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville and the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Brenda was a beautiful person inside and out. She cared deeply for the people around her. She was so kind and passionate and would give her last dollar to someone who she thought needed it more than her. She will be forever missed. Until we meet again.

Gary Emil Strey, age 70 of Seguin, passed away on May 9, 2023. Gary was born on August 7, 1952 in Seguin, Texas to Sophie (Staats) and Emil Herman Strey.

He was a member of Seguin High School Class of 1970 and later attended Southwest Texas State University for one year. Gary was an active member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church where he was involved in many activities. He took great pride in greeting everyone every Sunday. He worked 45 years at SMI (now CMC) in the detailing department. He joined SMI in September 1972 after a brief stint at Baenzinger’s Model Market. As a detailer, he detailed the amount of steel to be produced, the grade and fabrication required, and the delivery schedule to be met, working on a lot of highway projects. While driving with Gary, he would often point out highway projects he had worked on.

Gary was a car enthusiast and enjoyed going to various car shows. He took great pride in his 1966 Chevrolet pickup, his 1977 Chevrolet pickup and his 1979 Chevrolet Corvette. He was especially proud of his 1966 Chevrolet pickup and drove it everywhere. He loved to hunt and hunted for many years in the Texas Hill Country and even went on several trips to Colorado with some of his friends. He also enjoyed gardening and canning with his mother. He loved to BBQ for family and church activities and was an accomplished cook in all ways.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers, Vernon Strey and wife Barbara; Wilburn “Billy” Strey and wife Grace; and Norman Strey.

Survivors include sisters-in-law, Sylvia (Norman) Strey and Catherine (Billy) Strey; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, his Emanuel’s church family, his large SMI work family and lots of other friends, many of whom fondly referred to him as “Uncle Gary”.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Marcus Bigott and the Rev. John Van Deusen officiating. Interment will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.

Major Michael Carey Jones, USAF (Ret.), age 75 of McQueeney, passed away on May 5, 2023. Michael was born on April 30, 1948 in Birmingham, Alabama to Ida Jean (Chapman) and Carey Cannon Jones.

Michael enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966 at the age of eighteen. He was passionate about serving his country and always shared with his family that it was the best decision he ever made. During his twenty-seven active years in the USAF, he held numerous positions. As an airman, Michael served in the Vietnam war and later went back to school and received his bachelor’s degree from Culver Stockton College in 1977 where he was also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He became an officer in the USAF working his way through the ranks to Major, ending his military career as the Director of Aerospace Maintenance, when he retired in 1993. Michael also volunteered to go to Desert Storm and didn’t tell his family he volunteered, until he was safely back home.

Michael never stopped working. He went on to hold positions as the director of the Texas Criminal Justice’s Parole Division Training, as well as a probation officer in Burnet County, creating a robust GED program, which helped countless men and women onto a road to a brighter future. He had a brief stent at the Emergency Management Division, as a Critical Infrastructure Analyst. He also worked at the Texas Lottery Commission in many roles, until his final retirement, in 2021. He would always joke that he was going to be a 90-yearold door greeter at Walmart because he always liked to stay busy. Of all positions held, he exceled as a husband, brother, dad, and poppy, in which he made each family member feel like they were the most important person in his life.

Michael is preceded in death by Celeste Wright (Grandmother), Ida Jean Chapman (Mother), and Carey Cannon Jones (Father).

Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Sharon Jones; daughters, Melissa Byers, Heather York, son in-laws Michael Byers, Leslie York, and six grandchildren, Camryn Byers, Daron York, Kennedy Byers, Kaylin York, Kierra York, and Colby Byers. Gregg Merrell (brother), Paula Merrell (sister in-law), Cynthia Mims (sister), Gene Mims (brother in-law), Rusty Merrell (brother), Diann Merrell (sister in-law), and nieces and nephews, Tommy, David, Abigail, JoAnna, Niccole, Lauren, Ben, Jacob and numerous great nieces and nephews. As well as countless friendships made along the way.

Visitation will be held on Sunday May 14, 2023, from 2 – 4 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Graveside services and interment with full military honors will be held Monday, May 15th, 2023, at 2:15 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Chaplain Tom Jones officiating.

Danny Day Ketchum was born August 1st,1954 in Seguin, TX to Frank and Maud Ester Ketchum.

Danny accepted Christ at an early age. God called him to his Heavenly home on April 24, 2023.

Danny received his formal education in Seguin, Texas graduating from Seguin High School in 1972. Upon graduation, Danny had a desire to serve his country, so he joined the United States Navy. He served two years and was honorably discharged. After his military career, he enjoyed working with seniors in the healthcare industry.

Danny enjoyed fishing and sketching. He was a self-taught handyman, helping out friends with different tasks. He also had a passion for animals by taking in abandoned cats.

Danny was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, sister Annette, and brother Bill. He leaves to cherish his memory brothers, Frank Edward Ketchum, Dennis Day Ketchum (Monika), sister Janet Ketchum Antwine (Kermit), and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mobile Testing Sites Going Away As COVID Emergency Ends

(New York, NY) -- There’s a change to coronavirus testing in New York City with the formal end of the federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency. In the city, mobile testing sites are going away. Folks will still have access to vaccination, testing and treatment by appointment at the city’s public hospital system facilities. At home test kits will still be available but in some cases folks may need to see their doctor first. COVID vaccinations will remain free for most New Yorkers.

Altria Agrees To $235M Settlement To Resolve Juul-Related Cases

(San Francisco, CA) -- Tobacco giant Altria Group will pay 235-million dollars to settle thousands of lawsuits related to its former investment in e-cigarette maker Juul Labs. The settlement resolves at least six-thousand lawsuits accusing Juul of an epidemic of teen vaping. It ends nearly all the litigation filed by local governments and private citizens across the nation. The settlement was announced shortly after the San Francisco Unified School District finished presenting its case against the company in a jury trial.

New Patch Being Tested For Toddlers With Peanut Allergies

(Aurora, CO) -- The results of a new clinical trial show a new wearable patch could prevent allergic reactions in toddlers with peanut allergies. The trial involved over 200 children ages one to three with peanut allergies, and found that after wearing the patch for a year, 67-percent were able to tolerate a small amount of peanut protein. The lead author of the study published Wednesday said toddlers wearing the peanut patch also had a decrease in the number of severe reactions. So far, there are no FDA-approved treatments for children under four with peanut allergies.

Eli Lilly CEO Vows Not To Raise Insulin Prices Again

(Washington, DC) -- The CEO of Eli Lilly promised Congress on Wednesday that the drugmaker won’t raise prices on its existing insulin products. Lilly CEO Dave Ricks made that pledge in response to a request by Senate Health Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders. But the CEOs of Novo Nordisk and Sanofi did not. Novo Nordisk’s CEO said the Danish company would limit price increases to “single digits” while French drugmaker Sanofi’s CEO said his company has a “responsible pricing policy.” The three companies control more than 90-percent of the global insulin market.
