Remembering fallen law enforcement

(Seguin) – If there is one place in which fallen law enforcement officers are always remembered and honored it’s Guadalupe County. In a long-standing tradition, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office this month held its annual Memorial Ceremony in honor of those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community.

The ceremony brought together not only sheriff’s deputies and employees but also officers with the Seguin Police Department. It also welcomed retired officers who continue to support and who continue to be a part of their law enforcement families.

Providing messages and reminders to his fellow colleagues was Joshua Ray, chief deputy for the sheriff’s office. Having come on board last year after serving for years as a Texas Ranger, Ray shared his own experiences of having to be on the front lines of many of those losses and

why often times the shift of a public servant never ends.

“They are public servants all the way through, right? They give and give and give and give and a lot of that is giving their time. I have seen them work 12hour shifts and then afterwards go to an event that the sheriff’s office needs to be at or go to another security job or on their days off, they are working security jobs. They just give and give and give. Well, when they are doing all that giving, there is a family on the other end of it because they are not home. They are missing baseball games or band (concerts) or what not, so we do need to be reminded because in our profession, they’ll give and give so much that they’ll sacrifice their own personal wellness. So, I think that it’s important for those of us that are administrators and leaders in the profession to continually not only tell them but force them to take care of themselves and their families,” said Ray.

Students secure their futures during Industry Signing Day

(Seguin) – The futures of area seniors was signed and delivered this past week. The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) recently celebrated its third annual Seguin Industry Signing Day in recognition of students choosing to enter career pathways leading to in-demand careers and occupations directly from high school.

Seguin Industry Signing Day also highlights the importance of Career and Technical Education (CTE) to ensure a skilled future workforce for the Seguin Community and nationwide.

It has become a tradition across high schools to hold a “signing day” for high school athletes to announce which team they will join. There is a signing day for kids to announce where they will go to college. There is also the Skills US National Signing Day, where students sign “letters of intent” for job offers, apprenticeships or advanced technical training.

During Seguin Industry Signing Day, local high school

senior students sign letters of intent reflecting their commitment to go straight into the workforce with Seguin companies or various technical schools across the nation.

During Navarro ISD’s Seguin Industry Signing Day, seven students signed their letters of intent to enter the workforce or attend a technical school to study welding, advanced manufacturing and cosmetology at Caterpillar Inc, Discount Tire, South Texas Electrical JATC-Electrical Lineman School, Texas State Technical College, St Phillips & Coastal Bend College.

Seguin ISD’s Seguin Industry Signing Day featured 28 students planning to enter the workforce or attend a technical college at Caterpillar Inc, CMC Steel Texas, United Alloy, Master’s Electrical, Alamo Industrial, St. Phillips College, Texas State Technical College, Lincoln Tech, Palo Alto College, The Art Institute of Austin for Animation, Blinn College, Texas Lutheran University,

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, University of New Mexico, Universal Technical Institute, and Ocean Corporation.

“We are thrilled to be able to recognize high school seniors from our area high schools across the community for their commitment to the skilled trades,” said Josh Schneuker, executive director of the SEDC. “These students will make a big impact on the U.S. labor market and will help to close the skills gap impacting our country today. We hope that by raising awareness of the many career options in the skilled trades, we will have even more students signing their ‘letters of intent’ next year.”

Seguin Industry Signing Day encourages partnerships between high schools and community/ technical colleges and local companies. These partnerships help to prepare students, who are the future workforce of Texas, for promising careers. That’s according to Rick Bough, Seguin ISD CTE director. Signing, pg. 3

Rembering, continued.

Ray says the heart behind the badge is what makes these men and women so important to everyone and provides reminders to the communities that they serve as well.

“Not only am a guy that has been a police officer for the last almost 23 years, but I am also a dad and I am a dad that’s performed CPR on someone whose covered in blood. I am a dad who has had to knock on someone’s door at 3 o’clock in the morning and say ‘hey, your loved one is not coming home.’ These people are human. They wear a uniform. They wear a badge. Sometimes, they’ve got to make hard decisions and snap second decisions but they are human and they go through these incredible experiences and endure traumatic stressed events over the course of a career that honestly if you are in it, doing it every day, you might just not see it so I would say that I’m glad the public holds us accountable and has expectations but I would also ask them to remember grace in it because they give up a lot to do what they do and their families give up a lot for them to do what they do,” said Ray.

Sheriff Arnold Zwicke says it important to remember these lives that have been lost. He says no matter when or where an officer is killed, it becomes personal to all those wearing a badge.

“Today is all about thanking the officers for the job they do each and every day – the jail, the nurses, the medical staff, our officers in law enforcement and it’s also the day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their life protecting others. We want the public to know and I want my men and women to know that just to assure that the sun will come out tomorrow, we are going to put on that badge and uniform and we are going to represent

Signing, continued.

“We are excited to partner with SEDC to recognize Seguin ISD Career and Technical Education students that have completed their pathway at Seguin High School and are ready to take the next step in their careers. For some, that means attending a trade school to gain further understanding of their craft, while for others it means using the skills and knowledge, they have gained in their CTE courses to enter the workforce. We (Seguin ISD) are proud of these young men and women and know that they will represent our district and their programs well,” said Bough.

Also applauding this type of recognition was Vanessa Ritenour, Navarro ISD CTE director.

those that gave their lives to let them know we are not going to quit and we are just going to keep coming and I’m proud of the job that each and everyone does here and I’m thankful for the turnout,” said Zwicke. Zwicke says unfortunately, the dangers continue to increase more and more for law enforcement agencies across the country. He says these risks should never go unnoticed.

“The challenges are getting more and more every day with the craziness in the country as well as with the growth in Guadalupe County. I remember taking office 23 years ago and trying to grasp my head around it and here came Sept. 11. of 2001 and that changed law enforcement from what it was. It was a lot of added responsibilities and things to look for and things to deal with. Now, we are dealing with the border crisis, the fentanyl crisis and everything else and the guys are just doing the best they can to keep Guadalupe County safe. I commend them for their actions,” said Zwicke.

The annual observance held Friday at the sheriff’s office also recognized National Nurses’ Week, National Correctional Officer Week and National Law Enforcement Officer Week. It was a celebration of all officers, correctional officers and nurses of the past and present.

“We are proud to recognize the hard work and dedication of our young professionals who are continuing to pursue their career pathways after high school. They have acquired real-world knowledge and technical skills in their high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) program pathways. By committing to a post-secondary/ technical education or by joining our

local workforce within their selected Program of Study, these students are getting a jump start on their future career goals.

We congratulate them all and wish them the best on their future endeavors,” said Ritenour.

Navarro’s signing day was held on Monday, May 15 followed by Seguin ISD’s signing

Texas Lutheran Softball’s Season Ends with 2-1 Loss to Belhaven in Regional Championship

SEGUIN, Texas -- No. 8 Texas Lutheran softball’s season came to an end Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division-III Marshall Regional, falling to Belhaven, 2-1, in the regional championship.

Texas Lutheran (40-8) fell behind early after the Blazers (32-11) scored two runs in the bottom of the second.

The Bulldogs would begin to chip away in the fifth inning as senior Laura Hernandez (Missouri City/Ridge Point) hit a solo home run, her second of the regional, sixth of the season, and 12th of her career, to cut the lead in half.

As the Bulldogs time began to run out and outs became numbered, senior Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) stepped to the plate and hit a leadoff double down the left field line to start the seventh inning. Freshman Harleigh Russell (Fort Worth/Boswell) would pinch-run for the senior and advance to third on a wild pitch, but that’s where the Bulldogs rally would end, stranding Russell to end the season.

Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) got the start in the circle for the Bulldogs and would go two innings - allowing two runs on three hits. Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) relieved her in the third and dominated for the majority of her outing - only allowing three hits in 3.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen. Amanda White (Lockhart/ Lockhart) would come in in relief to record the final two outs for the Bulldogs.

Laura Hernandez, Bailey Hudgeons, and Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

This season marked the ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division-III Softball Tournament in program history, a year that also saw Texas Lutheran claim its ninth straight Southern Collegiate Athletic

Conference (SCAC) regular season championship. TLU reached the 40win threshold for the fourth time in program history and the third time in four complete seasons. As a team, the 2023 TLU softball team set the program record for walks (175), thirteen more than the previous record set last season.

Individually, All-Region freshman Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/ Foy H. Moody) broke the program’s freshman home run record with 10 home runs and established the program’s RBI record with 57 RBIs on the season. Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) set the program’s single-game stolen base record (6), single-season walks record (31), and freshman stolen base record (66). Ashlyn Strother set the program record for career wins (65).

The Bulldogs - a team picked to finish first in the SCAC preseason poll - conclude the 2023 season with a 40-8 record, going 19-2 in the SCAC to claim their ninth straight SCAC regular season championship. The Bulldogs will graduate three seniors - Laura Hernandez, Bailey Hudgeons, and Kirsten Williams (Pearland/Glenda Dawson). This group of seniors graduates with a career record of 140-21, claiming NCAA Runner-Up in 2021, a national third place finish in 2022, and claiming three SCAC Championships together. We thank them for all of their contributions to the Texas Lutheran softball program.

He is also survived by two sons: George Dix of Tupelo, MS. and Edward Dix of Raleigh N.C.; a sister, Jennifer Dix Burkholder (Regan) of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a brother, John Dix (Carolyn) of Telluride CO.

Thank you, Seguin!

Prof. Dix was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison WI, where he was a distinguished student, graduating first in his class. Afterward, he clerked for two Federal Judges on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Alabama. Upon completing his clerkships, he went on the teach at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis MO. Subsequently, he was lured away from St. Louis to become a “founding faculty member” of the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. He worked diligently at Arizona State to assure a level of excellence in legal studies for the students. In 1971 he was lured away again by Dean W. Prof. Dix devoted more than 52 years to legal education in his hope to produce the best and most ethical attorneys to serve the people of the State of Texas.

He will be remembered most by his devoted wife for his sharp wit; his gentleness; his sweet and loving manner; his wonderful hugs and kisses, and most importantly, constant support and encouragement. 8-Year-Old Girl Dies In U.S. Customs & Border Protection Custody

(Harlingen, TX) -- An eight-year-old girl who was in U.S. Customs and Border Protection custody has died. The CPB said in a release on Wednesday that the child and her family were in custody at a facility in Harlingen [[ har-lin-jen ]], Texas when she “experienced a medical emergency.” The agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating the little girl’s death.

Federal Appeals Court Leans Toward Rolling Back Medication Abortion Access

(New Orleans, LA) -- An appeals court appears likely to restrict access to a key abortion pill. The Justice Department argued in front of a New Orleans Federal court Wednesday to allow greater access to the pill after a Texas judge restricted its access months ago. The restrictions were based on alleged flaws with the FDA approval process. Although the New Orleans judges will not rule for weeks, court insiders say judges aggressively question lawyers for the Justice Department and the restrictions will probably stand. Regardless, any decision will likely be appealed to the Supreme Court.

TX Bans Gender-Affirming Care For Minors

(Austin, TX) -- Texas is banning gender-affirming healthcare for minors. On Wednesday, the state legislature passed a bill that would make it illegal for healthcare workers to aid minors in a gender transition. The bill will also force teens already on hormones or puberty blockers to stop using the drugs. The ACLU has criticized the bill, which they say blocks “evidence-based, life-saving health care” for transgender adolescents. The legislature is now headed to the desk of conservative Governor Greg Abbott. If it’s signed, Texas will join 16 other states banning healthcare for transgender youth.

USDA Might Ban Chocolate Milk From School Cafeterias

(Washington, DC) -- The Agriculture Department could be moving to ban flavored milk from school cafeterias. The USDA just closed the public comment period on changes in long-term school nutrition standards to cut down on added sugars in school lunch and breakfast programs. The agency says the aim is to “reduce exposure to added sugars and promote more nutrient-dense unflavored milk.” The USDA suggests limiting the amount of chocolate and strawberry milk in high schools and banning it completely in elementary and middle schools.
