School year almost OVER

Locals help Stamp Out Hunger

Mailbox deliveries make it to local food pantry

(Seguin) – Thanks to the community’s generosity, the U.S. Post Office recently made a special delivery to the Christian Cupboard. Thanks to the annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, postal officials were able to deliver 11,200 pounds of food to the local food pantry. The drive is held every second Saturday in May. Across cities and towns in America, letter carriers collect the non-perishable food items left at the mailbox or on front porches during their normal mail routes.

Regina Lee, the executive director of the Christian Cupboard, is grateful for this extremely large donation. Lee says this was definitely the largest Stamp Out Hunger donation ever for the non-

profit organization. She says it was just incredible to see that seven large postal bins had been filled by Seguin and McQueeney residents.

“As always, Seguin has showed up and has showed out. I mean 11, 000 pounds is a lot of food. It really is and on that one day pick up which is totally incredible,” said Lee.

Lee says this latest donation couldn’t have come at a better time for the Christian Cupboard. Earlier this month, Lee had made a public plea for donations after it had seen a spike in clients. Lee says the Cupboard was seeking enough donations to at least help it get through the end of the month.

Seguin ISD selected to help build STRONGER school principals

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD will soon have the right tools to help grow its own in-house principals. The Holdsworth Center, an Austin-based nonprofit focused on leadership in public education, has selected Seguin ISD to join the Holdsworth Partnership, a multi-year investment to build stronger principals and help the district create its own best-in-class principal pipeline system.

Seguin ISD is one of seven districts across the state selected to participate in Holdsworth's worldclass leadership development programs.

“This is a special honor. Not only to be chosen but to have an opportunity to hone leadership and service values in our campus administrators,” said Dr. Matthew Gutierrez, Seguin ISD superintendent.

As part of the partnership, Seguin ISD leaders will participate in the 2-year district leadership and campus leadership programs to receive the inspiration, tools and resources needed to grow their skills and drive positive change.

“Seguin ISD demonstrated a strong commitment to developing leaders and a growth mindset around learning new concepts,” said Dr. Lindsay Whorton, president of The Holdsworth Center. “The goal is to help the expert educators in Seguin ISD become skilled, visionary district and school leaders who can provide the support teachers and students need to thrive. Great leaders draw out the best in people and inspire them to achieve the unimaginable. Leadership is not a skill people are born with - it can be taught and honed through day-to-day practice.”

In the programs, superintendents, central office administrators, principals, assistant principals, teachers and other campus leaders engage with some of the nation's top experts in their fields from a variety of sectors, including K-12 education, academia, government and business.

Learning sessions are held on the campus on Lake Austin, a retreat-like setting that allows teams to step back from the day-to-day and see their district or school's challenges and opportunities more clearly.

In addition, Holdsworth District Support Team members will embed within district administration to help create a bench of strong principals. Every time there is a principal opening, the goal is for Seguin ISD

to have at least two strong leaders ready to step into the role and make an impact for students from day one.

Research shows that effective principals can significantly impact student outcomes by creating the conditions for teachers to thrive. Because principals influence the working conditions and skill level of every teacher in the building, their impact is outsized.

“We don't believe there are any quick fixes in education. Investing in the skill and capacity of the people working in our schools is the only way we will see true transformation,” Whorton said.

In surveys, 100 percent of alumni respondents said they were stronger leaders because of the skills gained through Holdsworth and were more effective at leading change and delivering excellent and equitable outcomes for students. Similarly, 100 percent of superintendents surveyed rate their leadership pipeline as stronger after partnering with Holdsworth for at least three years.

Since its founding in 2017, Holdsworth has served 1,371 educators across 50 districts in more than 200 schools in Texas.

“Now, is it going to take us a month to go through it? No. That’s not the point. That’s a lot of food and that’s a lot of food to sort and put on our shelves. But it’s a good amount of food and it’s some good work. Remember, we are a volunteer organization. A couple of weeks before this, I asked the community to kind of help us out. We were running short. The food bank didn’t have anything to purchase and the response to that was tremendous. I can’t give you the exact amount of food we garnered from that but it was enough to keep us going and nice size bags for our families. We give about 75 pounds for a family of four and if there are four more than that, it’s double that,” said Lee.

Lee says she is thankful to have such a supportive community. She says everyone does what they can.

“People are conscious of us being in the community and people are conscious of the need and it’s an ongoing thing. We are open definitely four days a week and sometimes five because we are open the first and third Saturdays. Memorial Day is coming up. We will be closed that Monday so the need is tremendous. There are those who have to work. They are barely scraping by. They are paying house notes, or rent or car payments. They are living life and guess what? Life is expensive and everything in life is expensive. So, sometimes you have to decide if you are going to have gas or if you are going

to have food, and lots of times people end up having to put in gas. So, people aren’t being frivolous with the food they are given, and come on, who wants to go and ask for food? But it’s a basic, basic need of our society,” said Lee.

Lee reminds individuals that when they donate food to the Christian Cupboard, they are also helping those who are homeless. She says donating food is always a good way to support those living on the streets.

“They have to be taken care of also. They are taken care of on a different scale and in a different way because I’m talking about homeless people who have no place to cook it and who have no place to store food. So, remember those cans of Vienna sausages and Spam you have, those little fruit cups, crackers, and toiletries you get from the hotels -- even water, soda, and juice cans. And, don’t forget who wouldn’t like some chips once in a while or a bag of peanuts? All of it is important and all of it is used,” said Lee.

According to Feeding America, over 42 million people in the United States are food insecure, meaning they lack reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

Donations to the Christian Cupboard are accepted Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. A collection box located on the north side of the building is also available 24/7. The food pantry is located at 516 N. Camp St.

Navarro’s Bryce Nall Caps Senior Year as District Co-MVP to Lead Panther All-District Accolades

(Geronimo) – Navarro senior Bryce Nall was named Co-District MVP for the 28-4A baseball champion Panthers in the 2023 season leading Navarro All-District post-season awards given out by a vote of the district’s head coaches.

Nall, who will continue his career at Lubbock Christian next spring, lead the Navarro staff in wins and innings pitched. He tossed a perfect game against San Antonio Memorial on April 28th, striking out every batter he faced in a district-clinching victory for the Panthers.

Senior catcher Cole Zimmer was voted as the district’s Co-Defensive MVP. Zimmer committed no errors during the season in compiling a 1.000 fielding percentage.

The Panthers had five players voted to the All-District First Team – senior pitcher Blaine Pircher, senior first baseman Carlos Contreras, junior second baseman Ryan Tatom along with senior outfielder Marco Moncada and junior outfielder Landun Taylor.

Gavin Newborg were named to the All-District Second Team.

Making the honorable mention list were freshman shortstop Austin Davidson and senior pitcher Caleb Thomas.

The Panthers had 13 student-athletes named to the Academic AllDistrict team. That list included Tatom, Thomas, Moncada, Davidson, Pircher, Contreras, Taylor, Nall, Newborg, Zimmer along with Colton Schuelke, Craig Heiman and Case Monroe.

In addition to the All-District Academic recognition, Pircher, Zimmer, Moncada, Nall and Monroe were named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State Team. Pircher was a First Team selection. Zimmer and Moncada were named to the Second Team. And Nall and Monroe were recognized All-State Academic Honorable Mention.

Navarro went 24-10 in claiming the District 28-4A championship. The Panthers advanced to the 4A Region IV quarterfinals for head coach Kris Cavazos, who announced Monday he is leaving Navarro High School after five seasons as head coach.

Our beautiful mother, granny, and friend, Sandra Kay Gingrich Hollamon went to be with our Lord and Savior on May 18, 2023, at the age of 88.

Sandra was born in Kansas City, Missouri on Sept 7, 1934, and spent time growing up and moving to different towns with her parents and brother.

Sandra married Thomas Henry Hollamon III (Tucker) on June 12, 1954, and together they had 4 beautiful daughters. After being widowed she later married Delbert Schlueter on November 14, 2011, and was blessed with 3 beautiful stepdaughters.

Sandra loved life and was a true Woman of Faith, a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Seguin where she taught firstgrade Sunday school for many years. She was a very active mother of 4 girls and all of their friends. She cooked many meals for the neighborhood and everyone who happened to be at her house on any particular night.

She was a Twirler mom, cheerleader mom, and all-sports mom. After raising 4 girls she decided to open Sandra’s dress shop. It was not a surprise because she loved to shop and look nice and so she decided to would give that opportunity to others in our community. Bright colors, glittery things accessories, and adorable shoes (usually one in every color) were her go-to attire. She also loved going to luncheons and places with her special group of lady friends, even taking several vacations and trips together. Family and friends were always very important to her. She will truly be missed by so many.

Preceded in death by her husband T.H. Hollamon III (Tucker), her parents, Dorothea Grace (Lohoff) and Jack Edward Gingrich, brother Paul Gingrich and wife Meg Gingrich, granddaughter Abigail Elise Schriewer and 2nd husband Delbert Schlueter, mother and father-in-law T.H. Hollamon Jr. (Tommy) and wife Elizabeth and sister-in-law Elizabeth Hollamon (Budgie).

She is survived by her children Melyn Smethurst and friend Michael Murillo, Shannon Dukes, Lecia Schriewer and husband Randy, Mary Grace Hair and husband Mark, son-in-law Don Smethurst and wife Janet. Stepchildren Jamie Schlueter and partner Kim Moncel, Sarah Jones and husband Rex, Anndy Schashack and husband Dan. Grandchildren Benjamin Smethurst and wife Jill, children Lila and Cora, Christian Smethurst and wife Holly, children Claire, Thomas and Violet; Ashley Cooley and husband Troy, children Hudson and Parker; Zann Schriewer and wife Ashley and son Kent; Kinsey Evans and husband Chris, children Hayden, Kellan and Brooks; Cade Collins and wife Carly, children Finn and Scout; Tucker Bouchard, Michelle Spencer, children Wyatt & Levi. A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. A memorial service celebrating Sandra’s Life will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Methodist Church with the Reverend Ray Perales and Pastor Chris Evans officiating. A Reception will follow in the Christian Life Center (CLC). Private interment will be held at a later date in the Lone Oak Cemetery. Elizabeth Nesbit Schott, age 89, of Seguin, passed away on May 15, 2023.

She was born in Gonzales, Texas on May 3, 1934, to Gibson and Ruby Nesbit. Elizabeth (Beth) was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. She was a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur. She also enjoyed antiques and remodeling older homes and historical buildings. Dancing and traveling were some of her pleasures in life.

Beth was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Dow Sherry and Claude Schott, siblings, James Nesbit and Jeannette Rone, daughter, Sharon Ann Sherry, and grandson, Jonathon Francek.

She is survived by her sons, Buster Lee Sherry and Ronald Dow Sherry; brother, Gibson Nesbit Jr.; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel at 5:00 pm. followed by a funeral service at 6:00 pm with Chaplain Jimisu Stuckey officiating. Private interment will be held at a later date in the Devine Evergreen Cemetery.

John Henry Wieding, age 70 of Seguin, passed away on May 19, 2023. John was born on September 12, 1952, in Seguin, Texas. He was a 1971 graduate of Seguin High School. John retired after 30 years, with SMI now CMC where he worked as a maintenance mechanic.

John loved everything outdoors, especially hunting. He loved welding and barbecuing including building and welding barbecue pits. His favorite times were spent among family and friends, particularly with his grandchildren who never wanted to miss any of their activities.

He is preceded in death by his father, Wilson Maddox, and his brother, Curtis Wieding.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Brenda Kay Wieding; son, Wesley Warren Wieding and wife, Terri; grandchildren who knew and loved him as Pop Pop, Brayden, Brylee and Brealyn Wieding; mother, Marie Wieding; sisters, Bertha Krueger and husband Allen, Connie Sill and husband Louis, Debbie Rohde and partner, Stuart Falor, and Tammy Schulle and husband Alton; sisters-in-law, Connie Falkenberg and husband, Leroy, and Judy Schulze and husband, Val; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and many friends.

On May 10, 2023, Prof. George E. Dix passed away of natural causes. He is survived by his loving wife, Dahlia Marie Gutierrez-Dix of Austin, TX.

He is also survived by two sons: George Dix of Tupelo, MS. and Edward Dix of Raleigh N.C.; a sister, Jennifer Dix Burkholder (Regan) of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a brother, John Dix (Carolyn) of Telluride CO.

Prof. Dix was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison WI, where he was a distinguished student, graduating first in his class. Afterward, he clerked for two Federal Judges on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Alabama. Upon completing his clerkships, he went on the teach at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis MO. Subsequently, he was lured away from St. Louis to become a “founding faculty member” of the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. He worked diligently at Arizona State to assure a level of excellence in legal studies for the students. In 1971 he was lured away again by Dean W. Page Keeton of the University of Texas Law School to help establish one of the most prestigious law schools; particularly in the area of Criminal Law. Prof. Dix taught at U.T. Law School for 48 years and was passionate about each year. He loved teaching and found great pleasure in getting to know his students and in encouraging them in their endeavors.

In addition to his teaching duties, Prof. Dix distinguished himself in his legal writings and research. He is the author and co-author of numerous books, periodicals, articles, and most notably his treatise in the TEXAS PRACTICE series on CRIMINAL PRACTICE AND PROCEDURE for numerous editions. He was very gratified that his writings and opinions were often cited as guidance and authority by the United States Supreme Court in their opinions concerning Texas criminal law.

He was also passionate about the rights of the mentally ill in our society and worked closely with several legislators in rewriting the Texas Mental Code. He was a lecturer on these matters with the State Bar of Texas and with specific Mental Health organizations to help educate physicians and mental health workers on the legal rights of mental health patients.

Prof. Dix devoted more than 52 years to legal education in his hope to produce the best and most ethical attorneys to serve the people of the State of Texas.

He will be remembered most by his devoted wife for his sharp wit; his gentleness; his sweet and loving manner; his wonderful hugs and kisses, and most importantly, constant support and encouragement. His accomplishments in his profession pale in comparison to the love he felt and shared in their marriage.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Rd., Austin, TX 78757. A reception for mourners will be held in St. Louis IX Hall immediately after the funeral mass. A graveside interment service is scheduled for May 30, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. at St. James Catholic Cemetery, Seguin, TX 78155.

In his memory, the “Prof. George E. Dix Scholarship Fund” has been established and donations to this fund should be payable to ST LOUIS CATHOLIC SCHOOL, in order to provide tuition to students in financial need. Lynda “Kay”

Myers Swope was born in Seagraves, TX on June 10, 1939. She was the second of three children born to Robert Myers and Mary Belle Myers.

Kay’s childhood was spent living on various US Army bases during the Second World War. Her family settled in Lubbock, TX after the war. She graduated from Lubbock High School and attended Texas Tech University majoring in education and business.

Kay married Sanford Swope in Lubbock, TX on November 7, 1969. Sanford was a career soldier in the US Army. Kay had two children, Robert “Scott” and Matthew Dwight. Kay and Sanford moved the family to many locations over the next several years. She lived in Germany, Holland, Italy, as well as Houston Texas, and Lawton, OK. When Sanford was in an area she could not accompany him to, she and the children lived in Lubbock. Kay loved traveling to distant locals and made friends in all the countries she visited and lived in.

She worked as a commission accountant for an insurance agency for many years. Following her retirement from business in 2003, Kay started ‘Kay’s Magic Quilting’, a long-arm machine quilting business. She owned and operated the business until she retired again in 2019. In addition to completing quilts for her customers, Kay was an accomplished quilter in her own right. One of her quilts was named Grand Champion of the Guadalupe County Fair quilt exhibit.

Kay was a skilled seamstress, an avid homemaker, an excellent cook, and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a generous friend and held a very personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and sister, and one grandchild. She is survived by her husband, her two children Scott and Matthew, and four grandchildren. She is greatly loved and missed.

Memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Jim Craver officiating.

N.C. Governor Slams Republicans On Abortion Ban (Raleigh, NC) -- The governor of North Carolina is calling the state’s Republican-led abortion plan a “compromise between the rightwing and the radical right-wing.” North Carolina Democrat Roy Cooper made the comment on NBC’s Meet The Press after the state legislature overrode his veto of the 12-week abortion plan last week. The new law replaces the previous 20-week ban. Cooper says despite the change in the abortion law, he plans to make sure the state provides “the most (medical) access possible to women.”

White House Speaks Out Against NE Abortion Bill (Washington, DC) -- The White House is speaking out against a new abortion law in Nebraska. The law signed Monday by Nebraska’s governor bans abortions at 12 weeks as well as gender-transitioning medical treatment for minors. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the law “dangerous,” arguing it will put patients and physicians in harm’s way and make it harder for get the care they need. She said the Biden administration will continue defending reproductive health care. The Nebraska abortion restrictions include exceptions for rape, incest, and medical emergencies.

NJ Superior Court Temporarily Blocks Hanover School District Parental Notification Plan (Hanover Township, NJ) -- The New Jersey Superior Court has temporarily blocked the Hanover school district’s policy that requires teachers to out LGBTQ students to parents. The district adopted a new policy last week requiring parental notification of any circumstance they know about which could impact a student’s physical and mental health or social or emotional well-being. Examples include substance or alcohol abuse, eating disorders, suicide, self-harm, and gang affiliation. Also listed as reasons staff would be required to contact parents include sexual orientation, transitioning, gender identity or expression. On Friday, the state’s Superior Court blocked the policy until a May 30th hearing.

Health Services Worker Accused Of Planning To Smuggle Drugs Into Detention Center (Miami, FL) -- A woman is accused of trying to smuggle drugs into a detention center in Miami-Dade County. Junell Bell was arrested yesterday morning. She works for Correctional HealthServices and provides medical care to inmates at the Metro-West Detention Center. Police tell NBC 6 she was found at the facility with a substantial amount of oxycodone, marijuana and other drugs.
