Waves to come crashing in for 2023 summer pool season Pool to be closed an extra day

(Seguin) -- Get ready to dive into summer with this season’s opening of the Seguin Wave Pool. The pool will officially open this Memorial Day weekend, operating Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The season will continue through Sunday, Aug. 13.

Last year, the city’s park and recreation department, reopened the pool after undergoing some much needed improvements. Erica Taft, the assistant parks director, says last year’s relaunch of the pool and summer success makes this year’s upcoming water season even more exciting.

However, one important thing to note this year will be the days of operation. Taft says the pool, which has normally been closed on Mondays, will be closed an extra day.

“This year, we figured out what works and we are not really making any other changes other than being closed an extra day. We want to make sure that people had the best experience, and that staff are rested and rejuvenated and that (they) are not too tired from having a really hectic week,” said Taft. Pool, pg. 3

Marion High School announces top scholars for its Class of 2023

(Marion) -- Marion High School is among the area schools gearing up for graduation weekend. Leading this year’s Marion Class of 2023 is Valedictorian Kaelyn Taylor. Taylor is the daughter of Andrew Taylor and Kelly Hagemann.

Taylor says she’s been fortunate to represent the top of her class ever since being a freshman and looks forward to continuing that lead during Saturday night’s commencement exercises at Veterans’ Stadium.

“I had been valedictorian all four years so there was not really any back and forth and it really wasn’t ever a goal. It was just kind of like if it happens, that’s cool but if not, I’m not going to stress myself out,” said Taylor.

The plans for Taylor are to attend San Angelo State where she will pursue a degree in psychology.

Also leading the Marion Bulldogs will be this year’s Salutatorian Laney Osborne. For Osborne, the news of being named salutatorian came as a bit of a surprise. Nonetheless, she is grateful that her hard work over the years has paid off.

“Actually for the first three years and up until the final grade check, I was fifth in the class so I definitely wasn’t expecting it and I wasn’t here at school on the day that they told us the rankings and so our counselor actually ended up Facetiming me and my mom to let us know which was super exciting. So, it wasn’t really something I was expecting. I was just kind of fine with where I was at and to be honest, my goals were to beat my sisters and they were fourth and fifth so I was like ‘um, it will be fine.’ So it was super exciting when she called me and told me I was salutatorian and it made that last push with all those AP classes and no credit classes really worth it,” said Osborne.

Osborne’s plans are to attend Texas Tech where she will study micro biology and minor in both chemistry and Spanish. From there, she plans to attend medical school in hopes of one day becoming a rural family physician.

Marion High School Principal Stacia Snyder says both Taylor and Osborne serve as great representatives of this year’s graduating class as a whole. She says this class deserves plenty of recognition.

“This class I think I would say is resilient. When they were freshman is when COVID hit so as freshman

and sophomores, they were really dealing with not only the normal pressures of life and how do I handle high school and what do I do in high school and how does this look? But on top of that, they had COVID. This class I think has really just been resilient and they found a way to fight through and be successful as they have become seniors. I’m just very proud of their accomplishments as a class,” said Snyder.

Snyder adds that this particular graduating class will more than likely be one of the smallest classes as the district continues to grow.

“We are but we are seeing it more at the younger levels. We are graduating 111 this year so that’s a little bit smaller than last year but next year, we are bringing in our first -- I think as a class, the eighth and ninth graders coming in is 140 so we are seeing it (growth) circle up,” said Snyder.

The graduation ceremony for Marion High School gets underway at 8 p.m. Saturday at Veterans’ Stadium.

GRMC among top Best Places to Work in Healthcare

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) has been selected by Modern Healthcare as one of the 2023 Best Places to Work in Healthcare. The complete list of this year’s winners, in alphabetical order, is available at ModernHealthcare. com/bestplaceslist. Modern Healthcare will publish a special supplement featuring a ranked list of all the winners along with the October 2, 2023, issue of MH magazine.

“An uncertain economy, staffing shortages and increasing demands for flexibility and remote work opportunities are forcing every business in the industry to focus on attracting and retaining talent in unprecedented ways," said Dan Peres, president of Modern Healthcare. "The 2023 Best Places to Work winners proved the value of understanding

what employees want — and need — today. The healthcare industry is going through a period of extraordinary change. Having the right people in place is more critical than ever, and the winning workplaces understand that taking care of employees is central to business success.”

“We are deeply honored to receive this esteemed recognition from Modern Healthcare for the fifth consecutive year, solidifying our position as one of the best places to work in the industry,” said Fay Bennett, Vice President

Pool, continued.

Taft says other than being closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, not much else has changed and hopes that families come out and cool off.

“We are having a few more items in concessions like cotton candy but people are still more than welcome to bring their own items. Tables aren’t reservable. They never were so if you want to be guaranteed a table, get there early. Also season passes are the best deal,” said Taft.

Last year, season passes were made available. Cost is $50 per person or $125 for a family up to six people.

The pool will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. Cost is free for kids 0 to 3; $5 for ages 4-11; $6 for ages 12 to 59 and $5 for ages 60 and over. Admission is half off after 4 p.m. or for groups of 10 or more. All guests entering the complex are required to pay the admission price. Outdoor food and beverages are welcome.

Season passes are available now at seguintexas.gov/wavepool. A link for the passes along with private pool rentals and swim lessons can also be found on the parks and recreation Facebook page.

Surgeon General Warns Social Media Driving Teen Mental Health Crisis (Undated) -- Surgeon General Vivek Murthy is issuing a warning that social media use is a main contributor to depression, anxiety and other problems in the nation’s teenagers. Dr. Murthy’s advisory urges policymakers and the companies that use the social media platforms to share with parents the burden of managing children’s and adolescents’ social media use. The surgeon general has long been a proponent of mental health awareness. The warning about social media comes as the rates of teenage depression, sadness and hopelessness have skyrocketed over the past decade, especially among girls.

UCLA Study Finds Cannabis Smoke Doesn’t Cause COPD (Los Angeles, CA) -- A new study from UCLA finds cannabis smoke isn’t as bad for people’s lung health as tobacco smoke. The study says COPD, one of the major risks of smoking tobacco, is not connected with smoking marijuana. Researchers compared groups of people who currently, used to, or have never smoked marijuana. Most of the people were studied for more than four years. The study concluded that any amount of marijuana smoke is not known to cause or progress the development of COPD.

Contingency

Plan Implemented At Elmhurst Hospital Amid Doctor Strike

(Queens, NY) -- A contingency is being implemented at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens as young doctors, residents, go on strike. Mount Sinai is bringing in doctors from other hospitals as residents fight to get paid the same salary as their counterparts in Manhattan. Mount Sinai runs the training program at Elmhurst Hospital, but residents say they’re making at least seven-thousand dollars less than their peers at Mount Sinai’s Manhattan campus. Contract negotiations have been going on for nearly a year, leading to the first doctor strike in more than three decades.
