Fiesta, continued.
“Freedom Fiesta is going big this year. We’ve got top notch entertainment lined-up this year. Jesse Raub Jr will be the headliner.
He’s a Texas Country Music Entertainer of the Year Award nominee. His music, his songs are popular with so many people in Texas, and we think the crowd will love it, said Dunn.
Just like good music, Dunn says this year’s Freedom Fiesta will also feature plenty of good food.
“We’re not just upgrading the music this year, but the non-profit food vendors will be returning this year. They’ve always been such a big part of Freedom Fiesta, since it started in 1967. We paused their participation during the COVID pandemic. Now that the pandemic is largely in our rearview mirror, we have those folks back out selling delicious goodies for people to enjoy. We’ll also have a solid lineup of food trucks again this year. We are elevating our food game at Freedom Fiesta, so people should come hungry and thirsty,” said Dunn. Fiesta, pg. 2

Fiesta, continued.
Plenty of family fun is also on tap for the summer evening. Dunn says it’s important to radio staff that folks of all ages are kept busy throughout the event.
“This is all about families coming together to celebrate our nation’s independence. We’ll get things started with the presentation of the colors and the singing of the national anthem. Then the Kiddie Parade starts around the downtown square. There will be plenty of family fun throughout the night, with bouncy houses and other attractions. It should be a good time for everyone,” said Dunn.
Vendors are also being sought for this year’s one day celebration. Dunn says vendors both non-profit and for profit are being encouraged to sign-up for a spot as soon as possible.
“There’s still time for people to secure a vendor booth. If you’ve got goods or services that you’d like to share with the community, this is a great chance for you to do that during Freedom Fiesta. This is something else that we had to eliminate during COVID, but vendor booths are back this year,” said Dunn.
Freedom Fiesta will be held July 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. in Central Park. There is no cost to attend the event.

Jett
After a hard-fought battle with a lengthy illness, Herbert Allen Jett, 78, of Seguin, Texas went home to be with the Lord on June 3, 2023. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Seguin. While growing up in East Tennessee, Allen attended Childs Memorial Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus as his savior. Later he attended both Paint Rock Baptist Church and Cedar Fork Baptist Church where he met his bride, Patricia Jett. They were married at Cedar Fork Baptist Church in April 1964.
Allen later became a member of Walnut Creek Baptist Church in Austin, Texas where he served as a deacon for many years.
Allen was born on November 10, 1944, in Harriman, Tennessee to Woodroe & Imogene Jett who preceded him in death. After graduating from Midway High School in 1963 he set out for Washington DC where he found a job working with the FBI. In 1963 Allen joined the United States Navy and served his country for seven years. Following his Navy career, he worked in the insurance industry for a few years before deciding to return to college to earn his degree at the age of 35. After graduating he moved his family to Austin, Texas to work for Texas Instruments.
Allen worked at several different companies in Austin as an Electrical Engineer before retiring in 2006. Allen and Patricia moved to Seguin following his retirement.
One of Allen’s dreams was to become a pilot, which he accomplished in 1995. This led to quite a few adventures for Allen and Patricia. Later in life at 74 years of age, after building a house and getting settled in Seguin, Allen also earned his Amateur Extra Ham Radio License where he loved making connections both locally and around the world. He especially enjoyed communicating with Morse code. Allen treasured his friendships with the local Ham Operators group.
He is survived by his dear wife of 59 years, Patricia Jett, and his children, Pam Swanks and husband, William, Greg Jett and wife, Elisa; grandchildren, Ashley Cotton and husband Rick, Clay Swanks and fiancée Bailey, Logan Raby; great-grandson, Trip Cotton; his siblings, James Jett and wife Linda, Dennis Jett, Carolyn Huffstettler and husband, Arlan, Fred Jett, and wife Robin; numerous nieces and nephews.
It was very important to Allen that Christ be glorified through his illness and death. The family requests any donations be made in Allen’s name to any of the following: The Gideons International, The First Baptist Church in Seguin, Texas or, Cedar Fork Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Tennessee.
Services are planned both in Seguin, Texas and, Philadelphia, Tennessee. A memorial service is planned at the First Baptist Church in Seguin, Texas on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. A reception will follow. For those who desire, the services will be live-streamed at https://vimeo.com/ event/3474198.

Merck Sues Federal Government Over Medicare Drug Prices
(Whitehouse Station, NJ) -- Merck is suing the federal government over Medicare drug prices. The New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant filed suit Tuesday morning over a new law giving Medicare power, for the first time, to negotiate drug prices directly with pharmaceutical companies. It’s part of the Inflation Reduction Act and is designed to lower drug costs for patients. It goes into effect in 2026 and could affect two big money-makers for Merck: the cancer drug Keytruda and the popular diabetes drug Januvia. Merck claims the law is unconstitutional because it would force the company to provide medication at government-set prices.
False Cancer Mail Panics Patients
(San Diego, CA) -- Hundreds of San Diegans got the scare of their life. Four-hundred residents opened their mailbox to find letters saying they have cancer, but they actually don’t. Grail, the maker of Galleri blood test says their test can detect more than 50 types of cancer but a software glitch sent out incorrect letters. Grail says those letters went out between May 10th and May 18th by a third-party vendor known as PWN Health. Retraction letters were sent out within 36-hours of the original cancer diagnosis letters. San Diego company Illumina owns Grail.
OneBlood Asking For Donations In Honor Of Pulse Nightclub Shooting
(Orlando, FL) -- OneBlood is asking for donations in honor of the victims of the deadly Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. In just a week, it will mark seven years since 49 people were killed and 53 others were hurt when a gunman opened fire at the club. Thousands of people gave blood to the victims in the days following the incident. OneBlood says anyone who participated between now and next Monday will get a free Pulse remembrance shirt, a 20-dollar gift card and a free health screening.
At Least 60 People Sick After Swimming At Lake
(Eagan, MN) -- The Minnesota Department of Health is now saying at least 60 people have fallen ill after swimming at Schulze Lake. Most have reported vomiting and diarrhea. While health officials have not yet narrowed down the cause of the illness, they say the symptoms are consistent with norovirus, a highly-contagious stomach bug. Shulze Lake remains closed as investigation into the illness continues.
