Seguin Fire/EMS Department collecting fans for annual drive (Seguin) -- The heat of summer is tough for all of us but imagine having to endure the scorching temperatures without air conditioning. Unfortunately, that's the reality for many families and elderly people in Seguin. In its tradition to help folks beat the heat, the Seguin Fire/EMS Department is currently accepting donations for its annual Fan Drive. "Summertime heat and humidity in our area can be relentless," said Fire Chief Dale Skinner. "Fans are critical to keeping those without air conditioning or who are on a fixed income comfortable and safe during the hot Texas summers. Box, portable fans will continue to be collected throughout the summer. The distribution of fans to those who need it, however, won’t begin until Monday, June 15. The fans will be available to households that are without air conditioning. The homes must be within the Seguin city limits. Again, beginning Monday, fans can be picked up at the Municipal Court/Fire Administration building at 660 South Highway 46 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 pm. A picture ID and proof of residency is required. There will be a limit of one fan per household. Those who received a fan last year will not be eligible this year.

Fourth of July parade entries now being accepted Special by Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street Program director

Hand sanitizer stations will be placed throughout the parade staging area.

Spectators should bring their own beverages and food.

(Seguin) -- Due to concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seguin City Council was considering canceling the 2020 Biggest Small-Town Fourth of July Parade. But after overwhelming public support and the Governor's announcement that outdoor events can occur with extra precautions, the city council has decided that the parade will go on.

Changes for Parade Spectators: Spectators should come with family units of ten or fewer. Spectators should try and leave six feet of space between their family unit and other family units. Hand sanitizer stations will be placed along the parade route.

To reduce the crowd of spectators, the city will be live streaming the parade through the City of Seguin's Facebook page. We encourage you to stay home in your AC and watch as the floats travel through downtown Seguin.

There will be some slight changes to the parade to address safety concerns for both entries and spectators. Changes for Parade Entries: Only ten people per float. Increased spacing between entries. Parade entries will not be allowed to pass out anything to the spectators.

The Seguin Main Street Program will be accepting applications for parade entries until June 22. Applications can be found at

https://bit.ly/4thOfJulyParade. "The parade is one of Seguin's largest annual traditions and we want to have a fun and safe parade," said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB director, "To reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, we are asking everyone who attends to respect the social distancing guidelines, use the hand sanitizer stations and encourage individuals in high risk categories to watch the parade from the comfort of their homes." On July 3, the evening before the parade, be sure to enjoy Seguin's Fireworks Fiesta. The fireworks will be shot from Starcke Park West at 9:30 pm. Best of the Bulldogs - remembering Kollyn McWhinney's 2015 Marion regional finalist team and the remarkable career of Cami Davis - Mike McBride, Sports Director -

(Marion) - With Kollyn McWhinny stepping down as Marion's head girls basketball coach after 16 seasons to accept a similar position in Lovelady, I decided to spend a couple of days paying tribute to some of the best teams and players McWhinney led during her stint with the Bulldogs. Tuesday's piece on Seguintoday.com (in Wednesday's Seguin Daily News) focused on the 2006 team that won the 3A Region IV championship, strung together a 25game winning streak, and advanced to the UIL state tournament. Today, we look back at the other McWhinney coached team that extended its playoff run to the regional finals - the 2015 Bulldogs. That season also happened to culminate the incredible career of McWhinney's most accomplished player, three-time All-State point guard Cami Davis. SDN readers and KWED listeners have seen and heard Davis's name a lot more recently than 2015, as she finished her college basketball career locally at Texas

Lutheran University after transferring from UT-Tyler. Davis earned AllConference accolades for Mel Dixon's Bulldogs in 2018, came back from a knee injury that sidelined her for most of 2019, and was instrumental in helping TLU reach the SCAC championship game as a senior this past season.

ever suited up for McWhinney at MHS. They were both four-year varsity standouts, and comprised the 1-2 punch that sparked the first two of the Bulldogs' five straight regional tournament berths.

If you didn't watch Davis play high school basketball during her Marion days, you missed some extraordinary, and sometimes eye-popping, performances.

Farris was a dominant 6'0" force in the low post, averaging 15 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks per game as a senior while displaying footwork and offensive polish several tiers above the typical 2A high school center. She went on to become a solid collegiate player at Montana Tech.

She began her career as a freshman starter and role player on the 2012 team that went 32-5 overall, logged a 12-0 run to the District 29-2A championship, advanced to the regional semifinals.

Fennell was an athletic forward who could play inside and out, with a knack for scoring in transition. She averaged 14.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.4 steals in her final season as a Bulldog.

Davis averaged 8.1 points and 4.4 assists as a first-year varsity player. Her primary responsibilities were to break opposing presses, initiate the offense, and distribute the ball to All-State post Rachel Farris and All-Region forward Kyana Fennell.

Davis managed that 2012 team with a level of veteran poise seldomly displayed by a freshman.

I'm glad Davis's career overlapped Farris and Fennell's, because those two have to be mentioned among the best players who

I remember setting up my broadcast equipment in Stockdale's gym while Karnes City was going through its shootaround before the Bulldogs and Badgers squared off in the regional quarterfinals. Karnes City's coach remarked to his

players "They have a freshman point guard. We're gonna get in her head." My immediate thought, which I didn't say aloud, was "Yeah...No. You're not." And they didn't, as Davis produced 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists in a 46-36 win. In the wake of Farris and Fennell graduating, Davis took over as the program's dominant scorer and put up some staggering numbers over the next three years, each of which resulted in District MVP honors and All-State accolades from the TGCA, TABC, or both. As a sophomore, Davis averaged 23.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 7.1 assists, and 4.4 steals. She recorded a 33-point quadruple double in a regular season game against Natalia. Her junior season was delayed by a knee injury suffered during volleyball, but she shook off the rust to put up 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 8.0 assists, and 3.5 steals per outing. Each of those campaigns resulted in playoff runs to the regional semifinals. See BULLDOGS, page 5

Davis key in McWhinney's string of regional tourney runs at MHS BULLDOGS, continued from page 4 That brings us to Davis's senior year and the 2014-15 squad that had the state tournament in its sights before falling to Jarrell 61-46 in the 3A Region IV championship game at Seguin's Goldie Harris Gym. The Bulldogs actually finished second in their district behind a San Antonio-Cole team that was ranked among the state's top 10 and fell in the regional semifinals to the same Jarrell bunch that knocked out Marion in the title game. For her part, Davis averaged 19.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.6 assists, and 4.1 steals per game that season. She became the first Marion player in over two decades to score 2,000 career points when she achieved the milestone in a January district win over Randolph. Davis had a talented cast of contributors around her. Junior shooting guard Jordan Estrada (10.7 ppg, 4.3 reb., 2.6 apg, 2.0 spg) earned All-District and AllRegion accolades. Senior All-District post Alyssa Ward (8.5 ppg, 5.7 reb.) provided inside scoring and rebounding. Senior forward Hayley Davison led the

team in rebounding with 7.7 per game and made an impact with her relentless energy and hustle in ways that can't be measured in box scores. The 2015 Bulldogs opened the playoffs with a 79-42 rout of Lago Vista in the bidistrict round, fought past perennial powerhouse Poth 45-35 in the area round, overcame annual playoff nemesis and 7th ranked Hallettsville 67-63 in the regional quarterfinals, and pushed aside Aransas Pass 50-38 in the regional semifinals before coming up short to Jarrell in the title game. That playoff run was also a valuable experience for a group of underclassmen who would go on to achieve great things in future seasons. Natalie Deml, Madelyn Abrameit, Brianna Randle, and Stacey Radtke would all become All-District performers in their own right. Deml and Abrameit would each earn District MVP accolades. Those two and Randle would all receive All-State recognition. Those four, along with All-Region wing Samantha Hopper, were the nucleus of Marion's next (and most recent) regional tournament appearance in 2017.

Cami Davis became the first Marion basketball player to top 2,000 career points in over two decades as a four-year varsity starter and three-time AllState point guard under head coach Kollyn McWhinney from 2011-2015.

Report: DNC Could Test All Attendees For Coronavirus

Researchers Say COVID-19 May Have Hit China Earlier

(Milwaukee, WI) -- If you're heading to the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee this August, get ready to take a coronavirus test before heading into the Forum. DNC organizers say they're looking at all of their options to make the convention as safe as possible. Milwaukee's health commissioner says the turn-around time on the tests is key to the plan. Convention planners say they will likely make the decision about coronavirus testing just before the convention begins on August 17th.

(Undated) -- Researchers say COVID-19 may have infected China sooner than originally thought. A new study from the Harvard Medical School claims in the fall of 2019, there were notable spikes in car traffic near major medical centers in Wuhan. Dr. John Brownstein says the research is based off methods related to ones used by intelligence agencies by using "commercial satellite imagery." He added it is inconclusive evidence but it is important to note the new information.

COVID-19 Mask Acne Is Real

(Undated) -- Most of the crew on the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier have coronavirus antibodies. U.S. officials told Reuters Monday that 60 percent of the crew tested positive for the antibodies. In April, more than a thousand people aboard tested positive for the virus. The ship gained national attention after captain Brett Crozier's letter was leaked that warned Navy officials about the spread of the virus. The boat quarantined off the coast of Guam for two months before heading back to sea.

WORLD-CLASS SPECIALTIES Close to home.

(New York, NY) -- COVID-19 mask acne is real. In social media posts it's being called "Maskne" and healthcare workers are most at risk because they're wearing their masks for hours. The blemishes are caused by the rubbing of the mask and the trapping of hot moisture underneath it which dilates facial pores and lets bacteria and oil clog the pores. Dermatologists recommend washing your face before and after wearing a mask and using a gentle moisturizer that helps strengthen the skin barrier.

Q: I have an orange tree and have leaf footed bugs on my fruit. What can I do? A: According to Molly Keck, A&M entomologist, in a recent Webinar on citrus pests, the only things you should use on citrus are spinosad, horticultural oil, insecticidal soap or Malathion (which is not organic). Leaf footed bugs ruin the inside of the fruit. Keck suggests several remedies which include controlling weeds, and removing any nearby plants that are bug hosts. Citrus plants are host to the Giant Black Swallowtail butterfly whose larvae is the Orange Dog caterpillar. These caterpillars look like bird droppings. I also sometimes find them on my lime prickly ash bonsai. BT can be sprayed for the caterpillar although I have never found that they do much damage (and I really like the butterfly.) If you have grasshoppers, Keck suggests tilling and controlling weeds. She also uses Malathion.

Q: I heard that mowing heights should be increased in the summer. When should we do this? A: Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac says now is the time. If you want your lawn to stand up to the summer heat, raise your mower height. The recommended heights are two inches for Bermuda, four inches for St. Augustine, and six inches for buffalo grass. This decreases lawn water use and increases drought tolerance according to Welsh.

Remember to water your lawn and garden between sundown and sunrise. I’ve seen people watering in the heat of the day when more moisture is evaporating than hitting the soil. Wind and temperatures are lower at night.

Q: Birds are pecking my tomatoes. What shall I do? A: Luckily you can pick your tomatoes early. Doug Welsh says that as soon as the bottom of the fruit turns from green to white with a tinge of red, it is fully mature. Then you bring it in the house where it continues maturing and turning red. (This also works when a freeze is coming. Just pick the tomatoes, or pull up the whole plant, and bring them inside.) Covering your plants with bird netting is something else you can try. However, sometimes awful things happen. I covered my blueberries with netting a few years ago. A mockingbird managed to get caught in the netting and a hawk attacked and ate him before I could get out there. While we are on the subject of vegetables, in a recent webinar, Molly Keck said that if you have fire ants in your vegetable garden, the only thing you can use is spinosad. FYI: To help conserve water as the summer heat rolls in, pull out all those waterdrinking weeds around your flowers and shrubs. Then, make sure you mulch. Welsh says that mulching is the highest-impact, lowest-tech water conserving practice. You can either use all the leaves you saved, or you can use bark chips.
