EVERYTHING FREEDOM FIESTA!

Vendors return & Jesse Raub Jr. Headlines

It’s hard to believe another Freedom Fiesta is just around the corner. Time flies, but traditions keep us grounded not only in the moment, but in the past, tying what has been, with what is –– in the most beautiful way. This year’s event is going to be, without question, the biggest one we’ve had in years –– maybe our biggest ever. This month’s Seguin Today is a sneak peak in to all the big plan we have for thi year’s event.

Our feature stories dive into the traditions of Freedom Fiesta introducing you to some of the community members who attend as vendors. You’ll also get to read about Jesse Raub Jr. and his plans to turn downtown into a Honky Tonky on July 1.

You can read all that and more in the June issue of Seguin Today available around town, or at our KWED office on Court St.

Seguin to observe Flag Day with retirement ceremony, free dinner at Field of Honor

(Seguin) – Old Glory will not go unnoticed on this Flag Day holiday. In fact, it’s pretty difficult to not notice the Stars and Stripes this week as Seguin continues its hosting of the annual Field of Honor along State Highway 123 Bypass.

As part of its weeklong festivities, the local Field of Honor committee along with its partners at Faith Lutheran Church will be hosting a flag retirement ceremony this evening. The community is invited to bring their faded and tattered flags for retirement.

The ceremony gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Field of Honor site.

Following the ceremony, the public will be treated to hot dogs, chips, and drinks courtesy of Seguin’s HEB.

Celebrating Seguin’s hosting of the sea of almost 1,000 flags across the church lawn is Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. Dodgen shared her words of appreciation during the group’s opening ceremonies held on Saturday.

Children advocacy center seeking sponsors, silent auction items

(Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center is hoping you can help it put the finishing touches on its annual night of games, prizes, food and fun.

Executive Director Christy Williams says the non-profit serving children and their families when there are allegations of sexual abuse, physical abuse or other serious crimes, is looking to pull in some much-needed sponsors and silent auction items for its Viva Las Vegas Casino Night scheduled for Thursday, June 22 at the Blue Bonnet Palace.

“We are trying to secure just a few more silent auction items, live auction items and bucket drawing items this week as well as sponsorships,” said Williams.

Tickets to the casino fundraiser are also now available for purchase. Advance tickets are $50 and includes heavy horsd’oeuvres plus gaming chips.

Williams says the need for sponsors are especially important.

“It’s a really great way for businesses to get the word out to people to show their support for the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center but it is also something that can be done by individuals or families to show their support,” said Williams.

Those interested in sponsoring

an event are asked to contact GCCAC at 830-303-4760 or email gccacinfo@gccac.net. Williams says those wishing to contribute are asked to do so by this Thursday.

“It is sure to be a fun time. Please come out, join us, and show your support,” said Williams.

Tickets for the event are available at Eventbrite. A link to tickets can also be found at www.gccac.net.

Seguin Education Foundation seeks board members

(Seguin) --- The Seguin Education Foundation (SEF) is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation dedicated to supporting the students and teachers of the Seguin Independent School District (SISD). The SEF is governed by a volunteer board of directors with diverse professional and personal backgrounds who are united in their desire to positively influence the community.

“It’s the time of year when we begin the process of recruiting a few members to fill vacant seats on our board,” according to SEF Executive Director Kelly Donegan Follis. “I am proud of the fact that the 35 seats on our board are highly coveted, with more applicants than available positions over the last few years.

Directors come from a wide array of backgrounds including from local industry, small business, the public sector, the service sector, health care, education, and more. No matter the background of our members, they understand that a better school district creates a better future for our community and they’re anxious to participate.”

The SEF board is a fundraising board, but also actively participates in distributing the resources it raises, according to Follis.

“It’s not just about raising money and throwing it into a blackhole. Our directors are invited to actually go onto our campuses to deliver a welcoming gift to every new teacher each fall, as well as to award innovative teaching grants to teachers across the district, and to honor exemplary students and their educator heroes at our annual “Celebration of Excellence” banquet. They get to see that the fruits of their labor really are appreciated and well-used. SEF pg. 3

Keeping the summer stocked with peanut butter

The Guadalupe County Democratic Club recently collected and delivered 200 pounds of peanut butter and other butters to Seguin’s food pantry, the Christian Cupboard. The group’s mission was to help address the food insecurities in the Seguin community, especially during the summer when school is not in session. Some of the donations were also shared with the Randolph Area Christian Assistance Program. Courtesy photo

SEF, continued.

In addition, our directors are “in the know” about SISD activities and are viewed as trusted resources by our administration for job fairs

and other campus activities.”

The application for the SEF board of directors may be found at the following link: https://tinyurl. com/2sx2hfeb. Further information about the SEF and its board are

available, along with paper and PDF versions of the board application, by contacting Follis at follis@seguin. k12.tx.us or by calling 830-372-0325.

The deadline to complete the application is Friday, July 14.

Honor, continued.

“It’s just amazing. People talk about this event, talk about the flags and so I really think that as a community, anything we can do to help and rally around it (would be great). It’s just amazing. It shows our community pride and gratefulness to those who serve, and we need to honor those who thought of this as a great idea. It came as I think a thought from someone who had a family member in the military – a couple of people got together and thought of it (bringing it to Seguin) and it just came to fruition. So, it’s wonderful. Please support. Please tell your family and friends to support and I want to thank you all for being here and to talk about what a great place that we live in whether it be city, county or our wonderful United States,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen also asked that residents everyday remain proud of the American flag. In fact, Dodgen who today is in Canada to support a local team of city employees competing at the Hydrant Hysteria National Competition in Toronto, Canada laughed and even added that she for sure would be donning her red, white and blue (dress) paraphernalia just as the Seguin community has come to expect.

Also following the retirement ceremony, the public is encouraged to gather for the daily playing of Taps at 7 p.m.

There is also plenty of time to still purchase a 3x5, 7.5 foot tall American Flag as part of this year’s Field of Honor event. The flags are to be purchased in memory of or in honor of military personnel, veterans or first responders. Flags can be purchased online at healingfield. org/event/seguintx23/ or by calling 830-243-2872. At the end of the event, all purchased flags can be picked

up and taken home. Proceeds from the event benefit the American Legion Post #245.

Closing ceremonies are slated for 10 a.m. Saturday. The Field of Honor is located on the Faith Lutheran Church lawn located across from Seguin High School at 1326 E. Cedar St.

U of M Study: Common Diabetes Drug Can Prevent Long COVID (Minneapolis, MN) -- A common drug used to treat diabetes has the power to prevent long COVID. A recent study led by researchers at the University of Minnesota found that Metformin lowers the risk of getting long COVID. The study revealed that overweight or obese people between the ages of 30- and 85-years-old who had COVID were about 40-percent less likely to develop long COVID if they took the drug. Participants who received Metformin were compared to participants who were given a placebo. The principal investigator said the drug is “ inexpensive, safe and widely available,”so this discovery could have “significant public health implications.”

Report: AI Researchers Risking Mental Health (Washington, DC) -- Artificial intelligence researchers are risking their mental and emotional health. That’s according to the American Psychological Association, which says researchers feel socially disconnected at work because of the sudden changes of working with AI. It also found employees working with AI are more likely to suffer from insomnia and alcoholism. Researchers say managers need to help their employees feel less lonely and should be cautious about having too many AI systems in the office.

200 People Dead In Peru’s Worst Dengue Outbreak On Record (Lima, Peru) -- Scores of people are dead in the worst dengue outbreak in Peru’s history. Peruvian health officials say El Nino, with its torrential rains and surge in mosquitoes, is driving the increase. There are now two-hundred-thousand confirmed dengue cases since the beginning of the year with two-hundred related deaths. The government is prohibiting people from storing water in open containers because that’s a prime breeding spot for mosquitoes.

Two Horses Euthanized At NY’s Belmont Park Racetrack Over Weekend (Elmont, NY) -- Some are outraged after two racehorses had to be euthanized over the weekend at New York’s Belmont Park. Mashnee Girl suffered a catastrophic leg injury Sunday in the first race at Belmont Park on Long Island and had to be put down. On Saturday, Excursionniste broke her ankle in the 13th race and was euthanized, right after Arcangelo won the Belmont Stakes. Both horses had the same trainer and now PETA is blaming the racetrack and says racing should be suspended at Belmont. Churchill Downs in Louisville was shut down ten days ago after seven horses died in a ten-day stretch that included the Kentucky Derby.
