Registration begins today for free mobile testing site in Seguin By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Sign-up begins today for those wishing to get tested tomorrow for COVID-19. The city of Seguin along with Guadalupe County and the Texas Department of State Health Services are partnering up once again to host a free mobile testing site at Seguin’s Max Starcke Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says when calling to register, individuals will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms. "Registration for appointments begin at 9 o'clock in the morning, Tuesday, June 16. We want to remind people that they need to be showing symptoms," said Sourdellia. Sourdellia says the mobile testing site is open to anyone in the area needing to get tested. "I think it's really important, we are seeing the numbers -- we are not seeing as many in the city of Seguin and there's been a lot reported out in Guadalupe County so, we are kind of seeing some of those numbers kind of go up again. So, it's definitely important if you are feeling symptomatic, having some of the symptoms of COVID to take advantage of this free service and go get tested. It only takes a couple of minutes. It's a drive thru service and most definitely if you feel like you are sick or may have it, we definitely encourage you to take advantage of this free mobile testing service," said Sourdellia. To schedule an appointment call 512-883-2400 or sign-up online` at TXCOVIDTEST.org.

Seguin ISD to discuss budget, approve new school principal By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The budget process continues tonight for the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees. Prior to the start of its regular meeting, trustees will host a public meeting on the budget and tax rate for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. The meeting will look at the financial impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the district’s operation. Following the public meeting on the budget, trustees will look at tackling several items on its regular agenda. Among those is the appointment of a new school principal at Jefferson Avenue Elementary. Trustees are looking to replace longtime school principal Merry White who elected to retire at the end of the school year. Trustees tonight will also get an update from the Seguin ISD’s Task Force for Reopening Schools. District officials say the purpose of the update will be to share what the task force has “crafted over the last two months.”

They say the plan includes “multiple school and work scenarios to bring students and staff back to buildings in a safe and responsive manner.” The task force is also scheduled to discuss its plans for the district to “quickly move into blended or remote learning, based on need.” Other items on the agenda include an update on the Seguin Early College High School. Trustees will receive the latest in recruitment and enrollment numbers for its Cohort 2024. The school board will also receive an update on the 2019-2020 Optional Flexible School Day Program as well as provide approval for the high school’s 2020-2021 application. The Optional Flexible School Day Program allows the Seguin ISD to provide flexible hours and days of attendance for students who otherwise find the traditional school setting more difficult. The public meeting on the budget and tax rate gets underway at 6 p.m. It will be followed by the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Board Room located inside of Oak Park Mall.

NASCAR'S Bubba Wallace finds voice (Charlotte, NC (AP) Bubba Wallace can count Spike Lee and Demi Lovato in his corner since he became the leader of NASCAR's push for change. Where he has failed to find support is from corporate America.

It's been challenging for Wallace, who first publicly called on NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag in a live CNN interview. By the time NASCAR responded Wednesday, Wallace had two sheriff's deputies assigned to him for security at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia.

Wallace is the only black full-time driver at NASCAR's top level and has had to scrap for sponsorship money his entire career. Since he has taken a prominent role as an activist successfully calling on NASCAR to ban Confederate flags at its events and leading the conversation among his peers about racial equality - the only new friends Wallace has are celebrities and fans. Richard Petty Motorsports has not heard from a single potential sponsor looking to back Wallace on the track. ''Nope. Nothing,'' Wallace said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. ''There's a lot going on and part of me thinks, `Hell, they always told me winning would make the sponsors come,' and we won a couple times and the sponsors never came. ''I'm not doing this for sponsorship,'' he added. ''I am doing this because it's what I believe in. If sponsors do come through, then they are showing support and they believe in the message and they line up with the same core values that I have. That's important.'' The 26-year-old Wallace was widely praised at Wednesday night's race for running a Black Lives Matter paint scheme on the iconic No. 43 made famous by Hall of Famer Richard Petty, his boss. The opportunity for RPM to support Wallace with the paint scheme was possible only because no other corporation had bought the hood space to advertise. RPM has sponsors including the Air Force, Coca-Cola and McDonald's for 16 races this year. It has space avaialble for 20 more. It has been a whirlwind two weeks for Wallace, who at last has grown comfortable with a pioneering role he never sought. He understood early that his rise through NASCAR gave him a platform he had to use

responsibly. His 2013 victory in a Truck Series race was only the second in a NASCAR national series by an African American driver (Wendell Scott, 1963), and helped push him into the elite Cup Series. He pinned a message to his Twitter profile in 2017 that remains there today: ''There is only 1 driver from an African American background at the top level of our sport..I am the 1. You're not gonna stop hearing about ''the black driver'' for years. Embrace it, accept it and enjoy the journey.'' It has not always been a comfortable role. It took Wallace a few days to offer his thoughts on fellow driver Kyle Larson's firing for use of a racial slur. Even after George Floyd was killed last month while in police custody in Minneapolis, Wallace was not the first driver to speak out for racial equality. To understand why requires a look at his childhood. Wallace is of mixed race, born in Alabama but raised in Concord, North Carolina, the area most NASCAR teams call home. He was drawn to auto racing over other sports and admittedly was somewhat sheltered in his youth from racial discrimination. His father, who is white, wouldn't stand for ignorant or racist comments and handled all negative experiences his son encountered at the tracks.

''What I go through and before all this, I didn't have it as bad as other African Americans in the community,'' Wallace said. ''The encounters I had were very few, but they were powerful. The negative encounters I've had with law enforcement were very few, but they stood out.''

His father, with whom he's had a sometimes rocky relationship with, traveled with him to Atlanta Motor Speedway where Wallace wore an ''I Can't Breathe'' shirt over his firesuit. He was part of a driver effort all last week to make a video calling for change, and by the end of the race he was completely drained and fainted as Fox interviewed him. Wallace said his sleep has been choppy he finished a round of morning television interviews and crashed for a four-hour nap - and is trying to find time to focus on Sunday's race near Miami while also answering the overwhelming crush of attention he's been under.

Wallace remembers those comments well, things like ''can you afford this He has leaned on his family and his car?'' and the suggestion he must sell girlfriend, Amanda, who has teased him drugs to pay for luxuries. about pop star Lovato's support (''big fan crush there''). And he is also noted It was not necessarly Floyd's death that was a watershed moment for Wallace. He there's now worry about his safety at the told AP he began to find his public voice track amid a backlash from fans angry on racism after watching video in May of over the flag ban. Ahmaud Arbery's fatal shooting in Georgia. He said he now recognizes he Wallace isn't sure what comes next in his must not let his platform go to waste. role as activist but he said he is determined to fight for equality. He has ''We are much more than just drivers who not kneeled during the national anthem, drive a race car,'' he said. ''We are which is a revered ritual in NASCAR's ambassadors. We are leaders of our own elaborate prerace ceremonies. brands, and then in life things are thrown at you, you have to stand up for what's He hasn't ruled it out. right. That brings on a whole new role. It's not on the front of the agenda that ''I've thought about it, still thinking you see, but if you read the fine print it's about it,'' Wallace said. ''I'm still part of becoming an athlete and the learning up on it, reading about it, so I'm pedestal you get with that.'' not clear on that just yet.''

Dr. Fauci Expects 'Real Normality' To Return 'Within A Year Or So'

(Washington, DC) -- Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]] says something that looks like normal won't return any time soon. Speaking with The Telegraph, the top infectious disease expert said he hopes a sense of normalcy will return "within a year or so." However, he's not looking for that to happen in the upcoming fall or winter. In the bid to return to normal, Fauci said there are multiple coronavirus vaccines which are "making significant progress." Fauci also shared some words of hope as the battle against the virus continues. He said, "This will end."

China Dealing With New COVID-19 Outbreak In Beijing

(Beijing) -- China is working to contain a new coronavirus outbreak. There are reports of nearly a hundred cases of the respiratory illness in Beijing. Ten neighborhoods in the city of over 20 million have been locked down and officials are trying to track down anyone who may have the virus. The origin of the coronavirus is believed to be around Wuhan, China last year.

White House Adviser Says People Should Wear Masks To Tulsa Rally

Dr. Osterholm Admits Fight Against Virus Is Filled With Unknowns

(Minneapolis, MN) -- A top health official admits there are a lot of unknowns in the fight against the coronavirus. On Fox News Sunday, Dr. Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota says we don't know why the virus is impacting some states more than others right now. The director of the school's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy warned of many more cases of the virus to come. Osterholm talked about 60 to 70percent of the population possibly coming down with the virus. He said he's really concerned about the number of cases going down and then making a big comeback.

(Washington, DC) -- A top White House adviser says people should wear protective masks to President Trump's campaign rally in Oklahoma this week. Larry Kudlow told CNN's State of the Union the recent surge in coronavirus cases "is a concern." When asked if those attending Saturday's event in Tulsa should wear masks, Kudlow said "probably so." It will be the President's first political rally in months because of coronavirus concerns. Trump pushed back the date to June 20th after taking heat for originally planning to hold it on Juneteenth, the day which commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S.
