The next chapter for a local family begins in brand new home
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – The Herrera’s are Seguin’s newest homeowners. Rosaura Herrera and her three children have finally received the keys to their future. The family is looking forward to new beginnings at 1180 Spruce St thanks to Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity.
The group gathered last week to welcome the family to their newly built home. Although the single mother appreciates her parents for allowing her family to stay with them, she can’t help but be excited about this new chapter.
“I’m very excited. I feel very blessed, very happy. It’s like I told them at Habitat, it’s a dream come true and definitely having somewhere where my kids are stable and to create new memories for them,” said Rosaura. “They (children) are getting older, and it was definitely time to move on and find a place for them to have
some privacy.”
Sharing the home are daughters, 12-year-old Lucero, 9-year-old Esmeralda, and 4-year-old son Gerardo.
Rosaura says her children have been the driving force behind her quest for a new home.
“I’m definitely looking forward for my kids to have friends over. They are excited about that, to create new memories with parties, spending holidays, having them play in the backyard – just have their own privacy where they can be themselves in their own room and having their own rooms, so we are definitely looking forward to that,” said Rosaura.
Excited about finally having her own room is her daughter Lucero. Lucero, a student at Barnes Middle School, says she can’t wait to move in and start decorating. Home, pg. 3

Vendors, food trucks, plus live music among events planned for today’s Juneteenth celebration
(Seguin) – Seguin today welcomes the return of the Juneteenth celebration in downtown Seguin.
In conjunction with the Wilson Pottery Foundation, the city of Seguin will be hosting a community celebration today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the term of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
Welcoming the Monday gathering in Central Park is Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director.
“This is the first time for the
Wilson Pottery Foundation to host a Juneteenth celebration in Seguin. A couple of years ago, we had a Juneteenth celebration hosted by a church and they ended up cancelling it because of COVID and they hadn’t brought it back yet,” said Kramm.
Today’s celebration is the finale of a four-day Wilson Family reunion and celebration. The Wilson Pottery Foundation preserves the story and pottery works of Hiram, James, and Wallace Wilson, who are recognized
as the first African American businessmen in Texas following the Civil War. The Wilsons were potters in Capote Hills, a small community just south of Seguin. In planning its tri-annual family reunion, group members welcoming folks from all over the United States thought it was fitting to also host a signature event in celebration of Juneteenth.
Kramm says the city is excited to welcome the Wilson clan to Seguin and hopes the entire community will join them for today’s events.
“On Monday, the foundation has planned some performances from local choirs and proclamations and then they are going to have a DJ throughout the afternoon, and they will have some vendors for people to shop with and Juneteenth, pg. 3

“I’m really happy, excited. We are going to have our own house. We each are going to have our own space and I’m going to have my own room to have my own stuff to do in there, be able to have more room by myself,” said Lucero.
Lucero says she appreciates all those who have worked so hard for her family.
“Thank you. I would like to thank them for the new house to give us more opportunities, more changes in life. I want to thank them for their hard work for our house and the effort that they put into building it,” said Lucero.
Rosaura says never in her wildest dreams would she have ever thought she’d one day own her own home. She says everyone deserves to take that same leap of faith.
“I say apply for it even though you think you are not going to qualify. You never know. The only thing they can tell you is no, and they will tell you the reasons and, in the future, if your situation changes, apply again. There is always something to look forward to. They are always helping you so it would be a good thing to apply,” said Rosaura.

food trucks as well. It’s going to be a nice relaxing afternoon. If you are working on Monday, I encourage you to take your lunch break and stroll throughout downtown Seguin. If you get out of work early, go check it out and just enjoy a Monday afternoon or Monday morning in downtown Seguin,” said Kramm.
The Juneteenth festival will include music by the Seguin Community Choir and DJ Carlton “Silver” King.
The event is free.
During the dedication ceremony, volunteer groups and sponsors were recognized, especially Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma. The group also thanked an anonymous donor for helping make this home build possible.
Just two days after dedicating a home to the Herreras, Habitat began putting up the walls for its next home. Group officials say they are now just a home or two away from building their 40th house in Guadalupe County.

Biden: Climate Change Only ‘Truly Existential Threat’
(Washington, DC) -- President Biden is shining a light on the threats being posed by climate change. He spoke Wednesday at the League of Conservation Voters annual capital dinner in Washington D.C, calling the issue “the only truly existential threat” to future generations. Biden said that over the past two years, a third of Americans have been personally affected by extreme weather events. He vowed to continue his efforts to improve environmental conditions, highlighted by last year’s passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.
American Medical Association Urges Doctors To De-Emphasize Body Mass Index
(Chicago, IL) -- The American Medical Association is urging doctors to de-emphasize body mass index when determining health and obesity. It notes that BMI is based on white non-Hispanic Americans and doesn’t consider ethnicity, genetics or body composition. The AMA says all those factors should be considered when determining whether someone is overweight or obese, as well as waist circumference. The AMA also notes that Body Mass Index should not be used as the only factor in denying insurance reimbursement for weight loss treatment.
Illegal Drugs May Help Vets
(Washington, DC) -- Veterans suffering from PTSD would have access to experimental drug treatment under legislation promoted by Congressman Dan Crenshaw. The Texas Republican is a veteran, serving as a Navy Seal in Afghanistan. His bill would create a 75-million dollar federal grant program to support research into both magic mushrooms and MDMA, which is also known as Ecstasy. Some psychologists believe there’s evidence that both could be effective in treating depression and anxiety.
Google Lens Can Now Search For Skin Conditions
(Mountain View, CA) -- Google Lens can now search for skin conditions. The Google app was introduced in 2017 to identify images and gather information about the image. “TechCrunch” says the app has now been enhanced so it can identify skin conditions by searching for a visual match. The new Google Lens feature may be able to help users decide whether they want to seek medical attention for a skin condition or an over-the-counter treatment.
