Years in the making, the city of Seguin completely finishes the Walnut Springs Trail

(Seguin) – Seguin is forever connected thanks to the completion of the final stretch of Walnut Springs Trail which now safely leads all types of foot and bike traffic into Max Starcke Park’s Pecan Bottom.

The city gathered Tuesday to officially open the last leg of the trail – a trail that now spans four miles across the city, one-way.

The trail extension consists of approximately .5 miles of 12-foot-wide concrete hike and bike trails along the west side of Walnut Branch Creek. The highlighted feature of the project is Seguin’s first below grade crossing under the South Austin Street bridge.

Celebrating the completion of this project is Seguin City Manager Steve Parker. Parker says the entire trail now stretches from New Braunfels Street and FM 78 south to Starcke Park. Trail, pg. 3

Ready to hit the trail

(Seguin) – While the completion of the final leg of the new Walnut Springs Trail is destined to draw cyclists, runners, and other outdoor enthusiasts from all over, it’s no doubt the locals who are most excited about utilizing every step of this new four-mile trail.

Laughing that she might have illegally gotten a jumpstart on jogging the trail was 79-year-old Betty Humphris.

Humprhis included her age during her interview with the Seguin Daily News noting that this trail is for everyone. She says not only is the location perfect, but she appreciates the preservation of some of the remnants of the original 1930s trail that have been incorporated into the design of this final half-a-mile stretch of concrete trail into Max Starcke Park.

One of those examples is the once popular Heart-Shaped Wishing Well located on the western half of the new elevated trail bridge.

“It’s wonderful to have the park connected to the library. I’ve been really excited about that part of it and I really was glad to see the well that they redid down there,” said Humphris.

Humphris says she hopes to utilize the trail as often as she can. She says for the most part, it’s quite easy to navigate and encourages others to come out and give it a try.

“Do it for your health and for the beauty of it. It’s so nice and calm out here and there’s a small waterfall down there I never knew existed,” said Humphris.

Cyclists Chad Chamness and Eric Norman were two other residents who couldn’t wait to try out the new extended trail and who were on hand for Tuesday’s city of Seguin ribbon cutting.

After much of the trail was completed in 2016, the community like Chamness had to wait patiently until the city was able to move forward with this final piece of its puzzle.

“It’s a been a long time coming

even whenever they first got done with the first part that they did for this, I was wondering why they didn’t do this portion of it because it’s very vital to get across Austin Street. It’s a four-lane road at one point and to be able to get community from that side of Austin Street to this side is very important to me because we used to have a Monday night ride where there was a group of 10 or more of us who would ride around town and this would have been perfect to get us back and forth safely,” said Chamness.

Norman says now that it is fully completed, this trail couldn’t be more ideal.

“I’m relatively new to Seguin. I’ve only been here three years but Chad and I and our wives like to ride around town and so I think it’s a good chance for them -- they are not as comfortable riding on the roads as Chad and I so for them this, I think, is a good new opening for them to explore the city,” said Norman.

Trail, continued.

“The Walnut Springs Trail provides pedestrian access to a number of locations including Park West, Seguin Police Department, Walnut Springs Park, the Seguin Public Library, Texas Lutheran University, the downtown area and Max Starcke Park including the Guadalupe River. That’s phenomenal in my opinion. This is something that we are always going to remember this day and where we were and I remember that groundbreaking because there were so many people, you could feel the energy of what they wanted in this community and so we are very very happy to deliver this project to you today. I loved the last two, three weeks of promotion of this and seeing all the comments on Facebook and social media about the energy and excitement of people wanting to see it,” said Parker.

Parker says the trail is officially a gamechanger in the city’s future.

“I became city manager about three and a half years ago and this was my first official ribbon cutting or groundbreaking when this project started and then here two and a half years later, we get to see it finished and it’s absolutely gorgeous. I’m so excited about this. This is one of those transformational projects. This is a multi-generational project that Seguin can be proud of. Since I became city manager, we’ve done ton of community outreach because the city of Seguin is growing so fast because we’ve done every type of study that we can do about how to grow, how to grow smart but the most important part of those studies is getting the citizens input of what they want in our community. It’s been a parks master plan. It’s been a comprehensive plan. It’s been a downtown plan. It’s been a comprehensive economic development study – all those things and all that community input said that we want quality of life. We want retail and commercial. We want things for our children to do and this is one of those projects that is going to deliver on those promises. So, I’m very very excited to see this come to fruition,” said Parker.

Not only is the trail an indicator of the future but it’s also some well-preserved memories of the city’s history. That’s according to Seguin City Councilman District 5 Paul Gaytan. Gaytan shared how the city was founded on the banks of Walnut Springs Creek in 1838. He also recalled memories about playing in this same creek space –memories that he knows others like him share.

In addition, he noted the nostalgic history behind an original creek trail in Seguin, a trail built in the 1930s by Architect Robert H. Hugman, the same man who designed the world-famous San Antonio River Walk. He says being able to preserve and incorporate some of the

Project, continued.

Norman says having moved to Seguin from the Houston area and having lived in both North and South Texas, he doesn’t recall another trail project like this one.

“Living in more urban areas,

remnants of that original trail space into this extension project only adds to the unique and innovative design that families and visitors will come to love.

“Never during my lifetime have we’ve been able to safely walk down this tributary Walnut Creek into the Guadalupe River like we can now and it’s amazing that we have done this, and our history is amazing. Not only did we have a famous architect design this place in 1933, but he also designed Max Starcke Park and so in 1938, Max Starcke Park was built by the National Youth Administration, and it was only after these two projects that Hugman decided to go on over and build their little River Walk. I’m so proud of Seguin. We have such a wonderful history here and this is a very very special moment. I think that we are going to see significant development along this creek whether that is supported or not by you, but we are going to see it just like you see it on the River Walk and this place is going to transform over the next decades. So, congratulations Seguin, we deserve this,” said Gaytan.

Helping to partially fund the trail extension was the Texas Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The agencies covered $2.2 million of the $5.18 million project.

Parking along the four-mile trail is encouraged at Park West, Walnut Springs Park, the Seguin Public Library and now the Max Starcke Park Pecan Bottom.

it’s hard to safely get around especially with riders who are not as confident, so I think this is huge,” said Norman.

The trail project initially began in 2011 with the construction of its central piece which is Walnut Springs Park near the local library.

The vision for this trail, however, started way earlier with elected officials and community members who wanted to tie the community together. The idea was not only for recreational purposes but to ensure the safe travel of all those needing to walk anywhere in the community.

(Geronimo) -- Two Navarro Panthers were named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Class 4A All-State Baseball teams. Junior outfielder Landun Taylor was named to the All-State first team while senior pitcher Bryce Nall earned All-State second team honors.

Taylor pitched in five games for the Panthers as well, with three starts including a series-clinching victory over Sealy in the UIL Area round playoffs.

Nall, who will continue his career at Lubbock Christian next spring, lead the Navarro staff in wins and innings pitched. He tossed a perfect game against San Antonio Memorial on April 28th, striking out every batter he faced in a district-clinching victory for the Panthers. Nall finished the season with a 9-4 record in 14 starts with a 0.99 ERA. Nall allowed only 47 hits while striking out 128 in 84 and 2/3rds innings pitched.

Ozempic May Help Treat Addictive Behaviors Like Drinking And Smoking

(New York, NY) -- Neuroscientists hope that semaglutide -- the active ingredient in Ozempic and the weight-loss drug Wegovy -- may be more potent than older diabetes drugs at curbing addictive behavior. Nearly 30-million teens and adults in the U.S. have alcohol-use disorder, but the drugs approved by the FDA don’t work for everyone. Drugs like Ozempic mimic the hormone GLP-1, which is naturally released from the intestines, and helps regulate glucose levels and suppress hunger. GLP-1 reduces the response of the brain’s reward system to dopamine; these changes lead to reductions in binge-eating-like behaviors. And it isn’t just food and alcohol -- animal studies have shown that rodents consume less of a range of potentially addictive substances when treated with GLP-1 drugs. More research still needs to be done in humans.

Gas Stoves Raise Levels Of Cancer-Causing Chemical

(Undated) -- A new study finds using gas-powered stoves can raise the levels of a cancer-causing chemical called benzene. The study was published by the Environmental Science and Technology journal, which looked at homes in California and Colorado. Researchers found gas and propane stoves and ovens emit significantly higher rates of benzene. Long-term exposure to the chemical is known to cause blood cancer and has been linked to childhood asthma. The World Health Organization says there is technically no safe level of exposure to benzene, and breathing it in puts you at an elevated risk for developing health issues.

NJ May Not Wait For Feds To Ban Menthol Cigarettes

(Trenton, NJ) -- It looks like New Jersey isn’t inclined to wait for the federal government to ban menthol cigarettes. The FDA’s proposal last year to ban menthol cigarettes nationwide isn’t getting traction. So, Ocean County Senator Robert Singer, a Republican, is pushing a bill that would ban them statewide. It cleared a New Jersey Senate committee last week but the Assembly is yet to consider a menthol ban. Singer says tobacco companies are deliberately targeting Black Americans and young people with menthol cigarettes which are considered more addictive than regular smokes because they encourage deeper inhaling.

Colorado Health Department Asking For Help Collecting Ticks

(Denver, CO) -- The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is asking for help tracking a blood-sucking bug. The agency is asking Coloradans to bag and send in any ticks they find around their homes. The Health Department is hoping to use the specimens to track the geographic distribution of certain kinds of ticks as well as any diseases they may carry. Information on how to submit a tick for examination is available on the C-D-P-H-E website.
