Seguin ISD continues its search for future middle school land

Original attempt at property deal fails

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD is going back to square one in its search for land for a third middle school campus.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the district appreciates the feedback recently provided by community members regarding the property at 407 Patricia Park Court. The district was

interested in the 42-acre tract as a potential site for a new middle school.

However, due to several variables related to the site, Seguin ISD officials say they are no longer considering the site for a future campus.

As reported earlier by the Seguin Daily News, the Seguin ISD assured the public that it would not leave one stone unturned during its

inspection of the property. It was during a pair of meetings that concerns were raised by several residents living in that area. Concerns included easements, flood prone areas and noise levels due to the fly zone of Randolph Airfield.

The district says officials will continue to work closely with area realtors and will monitor the market for acreage that can serve as the future middle school location. The ideal site will need to be 40 to 50 acres that is easily accessible. Property owners within the Seguin ISD boundary who may be interested in selling a tract to the district are asked to email sisd@ seguin.k12.tx.us.

Seguin ISD approves across the board salary increase

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD is positioning itself so that it can remain competitive in not only attracting but retaining quality classroom teachers for the upcoming school year.

The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees on Tuesday unanimously approved a pay increase for teachers and all other employees.

The approved wage increase includes 4 percent for teachers, clerical and those in the maintenance, custodial and transportation departments. Campus administrators and other professional staff will also see an increase of 3.5 percent. Those in the district’s Child Nutrition Department will also see an average hourly increase of $1.50.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the district had no choice but to remain competitive.

“There have been many teachers over the past few years that have either left the profession or teachers have the opportunity to pick an choose where they want to teach because of the teacher shortage and so it’s very competitive and school districts including the Seguin ISD are trying to set salaries so that we not only retain our teachers but we can also recruit as well,” said Hoffmann.

Hoffmann says the competitiveness in the teaching

field for districts across the state has also led to a significant jump in the starting pay for first year teachers.

“We have increased our first year, new teacher salary to $57,000 a year so that means a certified teacher coming out of college, may have never taught before, we will hire that teacher and that is the rate at $57,000 and again that is trying to keep in step with area and regional school districts because we are all competing for a limited number of teachers,” said Hoffmann.

Seguin invited to casino fun at Blue Bonnet Palace

Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center to host fundraiser

(Selma) – It’s not too late to snag your tickets to tonight’s Viva La Vegas Casino Night benefiting the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center.

The event gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Blue Bonnet Palace in Selma and will include a night of games, prizes, and food.

Christy Williams, the executive director for the children’s advocacy center, says the best part of grabbing a ticket is that folks don’t need gaming experience to walk away a winner.

“The (game) company is really good about educating people who have maybe never played these games before so it’s a really neat way

to learn how to play the games with very little at stake which I think is kind of cool and just come out to support a non-profit that you believe in and know the mission is a great thing,” said Williams.

Williams says thanks to

sponsors and prize donors, there will be something for everyone.

“There is something for everybody. There will be music throughout the night. We will have lots of areas for people to kind of convene with their friends and be there. There’s a silent auction and there’s a live auction just tons of stuff going on and The Bluebonnet Palace is just a cool place to hang out,” said Williams.

Tickets are $50 a person and can be purchased at gccac.net or at Eventbrite.com. A link for tickets can also be found on the advocacy center’s Facebook page.

Doors open at 6 p.m. The Blue Bonnet Palace is located at 17630 Lookout Rd in Selma.

Salary, continued.

The $57,000 is up from last year’s starting pay of $54,000.

On top of increasing its salaries, Hoffmann says the school district has also been forced to utilize some creativity when filling those vacancies.

“A couple of items that we have on the table right now are stipends. Number one, a Refer a Friend stipend – We are offering this to all employees who refer a teacher who is ultimately hired here in the Seguin ISD and that is an amount of $500 per teaching position. We are also offering a Welcome Back stipend for any former Seguin ISD teacher who has left the district perhaps has gone to a neighboring district, maybe realized that the grass isn’t greener on the other side of the county line so if that teacher is interested in coming back and has been gone for at least a full year, we will

give that teacher also a $500 stipend for returning back to the Seguin ISD,” said Hoffmann.

Hoffmann adds that although the salaries have been set, these amounts could still potentially increase following state action.

“These amounts could possibly increase if additional state funding is approved through the 88th Legislative Session up in Austin. We are somewhat hopeful for that to happen but are very cautiously not holding our breath for that to happen in that legislative session. So, with these salaries set, our teachers know what they are going to be making next fall,” said Hoffmann.

Salaries make up approximately 80 percent of the Seguin ISD’s school budget. Salaries are typically key components that need to be established so districts can continue their budget process for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

John Jackson Rakes in Another College Offer for Seguin Football Program

(Seguin) -- The college football offers continue to roll in for Seguin High School seniors.

Three Matadors football players received collegiate offers this past Friday through Monday and on Tuesday running back John Jackson made it four within the last week with an official offer from McMurry University in Abilene.

Jackson was a Second Team AllDistrict 12-5A selection in 2022 as a junior, leading the Matadors in rushing with 798 yards and nine touchdowns. In 2021, Jackson topped 1000 yards on the ground as a sophomore with 1118 yards to go along with another nine scores.

Jackson is also a star athlete for the Seguin basketball team. He was named the District 26-5A Offensive MVP this past season. Jackson averaged over 21 points per game and passed the 1000 point plateau in his career during a 90-89 Seguin victory over Converse Judson on December 8th.

The McMurry War Hawks are an NCAA Division-III football program. They compete in the American Southwest Conference. The War Hawks were 1-7 in conference play in 2022 and 1-9 overall. McMurray is lead by head coach Jordan Neal. Jackson joins Matador defensive back Donovan Cray, who received an offer from North American University just outside of Houston on Friday of last week. Tight end Jackson Pond earned an offer from North American University as well on Monday. Also on Monday, senior offensive lineman Cooper Neumann received an offer from Louisiana Christian University based in Pineville, Louisiana.

The 2023 Matador football season starts on August 25th on the road against Alamo Heights. Seguin was 6-5 in 2022 under second year head coach Craig Dailey. The Matadors have qualified for the UIL playoffs 5th straight seasons, which is a program record.

Texas Becomes Final State To End Its COVID Emergency Rules

(Austin, TX) -- Texas is now the final state in the nation to end its COVID emergency rules. Republicans are praising the governor for signing a bill that bans local governments from enforcing COVID mandates. But State Representative Brian Harrison says private businesses can still do what they want which includes firing unvaccinated workers. He says that’s unfair. Harrison also says he’s stunned that Texas is the final state to lift its COVID rules, especially when you consider that President Biden ended the COVID-19 public health emergency on May 11th.

Study: Heavy Drinkers Can’t “Hold” Liquor

(Chicago, IL) -- A new study shows heavy drinkers can’t exactly “hold their liquor.” Instead, the University of Chicago study says those with alcohol use disorder, what used to be called alcoholism, tested significantly impaired on typical habits three hours after having a drink. A coauthor of the study said it’s a “popular perception that experienced drinkers can handle their liquor - like two cowboys in a bar in a drinking competition.” Yet the senior author said only about 10-percent of those with alcohol use disorder go into treatment, and added that binge drinking is on the rise.

Army Moves To New Body Fat Test That Soldiers May Fail

(Washington, DC) -- Soldiers who passed the old US navy body fat test may fail the new one. A lead researcher on the Army’s Body Composition Study that pushed the change said so to reporters. CNN reports that Army data shows that about a third of people passed the previous version when they should have failed. Many have criticized the old tape test that measured men around the neck and abdomen and women around the neck, waist and hips as outdated and inaccurate. Now, all soldiers of any gender will all be taped around the navel to calculate their body fat.

Michigan Poll Suggests Parents Should Take Stomach Aches Seriously

(Lansing, MI) -- A new poll suggests parents should take their child’s stomach pain more seriously. According to the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital parents do not seek doctor’s advice when stomach complaints become regular. Pediatricians say it can be difficult to know if the pain is a short-term issue. Stomach pain can be a sign of important emotional health concerns and parents should give their child a safe space to express their feelings.
