Support making its way to the Garcia Family

Set of brothers face separate battles

(Seguin) – The last few months have undoubtedly been challenging for local brothers Jacob and Justin Garcia. The family has undergone a set of separate setbacks, the latest being injuries sustained by Jacob while on the job as a Canyon Lake Fire Fighter.

On April 27, Jacob suffered a broken leg, neck, and left arm paralysis after a roof caved in during a house fire. He has since been in recovery and will continue to undergo extensive therapy and surgeries.

Helping to support his healing has been the recent announcement that Jacob has been selected as the June 2023 Injured First Responder Grant Recipient by the Running 4 Heroes national organization.

The non-profit group started with a then 10-year-old Zechariah Cartledge who began his journey raising funds for fallen or injured first responders by running.

With its Injured First Responder Grant Program, the group each month donates a

minimum of $10,000 to a first responder injured in the line of duty – again making Jacob this month’s recipient.

Jacob says he’s appreciative of all the support that has been shown, especially this latest gift provided by the national non-profit.

“I was told while I was in the hospital so I wasn’t really sure what the organization was until much later on and I first off want to thank the New Braunfels Fire Department as well as the Canyon Lake Fire Department because they filled out the paperwork on my behalf to get me into the running for the grant and then just as I’ve been in recovery, learning what Zachariah has done for all first responders, I was very thankful. I also want to give a big thanks to Seton-Kyle, New Braunfels Regional Rehab and just the thoughts and prayers from everyone,” said Jacob.

It’s also no surprise that Jacob’s mother, Loretta Garcia, is very thankful. She says it has not been easy to see her son injured

but remains grateful that he is alive.

“I have so much gratitude towards this organization because I know it is a national thing and that my son was picked first of all and it’s good for all the injured first

responders and to know that there is an organization out there that assists in a time like this when it’s unexpected. It was very unexpected and for Jacob to be so independent... Family, pg. 3

Vendor spots available at this year’s Freedom Fiesta

Seguin Radio KWED taking applications now

(Seguin) – Seguin Radio KWED is looking for a few good vendors for its annual Freedom Fiesta in downtown Seguin. The radio station this year will welcome vendors to its Fourth of July celebration on Saturday, July 1. Downtown Seguin is well-known for its market days, and this year, KWED invites those folks to come on out to set up shop during Freedom Fiesta.

Helping to coordinate these vendor booths is KWED’s own Linda Duncan.

“We are looking for anyone who sells things and wants to come down to Freedom Fiesta and sell their wares or whatever it is that they are involved in. Maybe they have jewelry, maybe they sell clothing, anything in between. We will welcome them and it’s $150. All you have to do is come and fill out a form, pay the money and you are in,” said Duncan.

Duncan says Freedom Fiesta is among, if not the largest, community celebration to be held in downtown Seguin. She says its homecoming atmosphere allows folks to have a good time and connect with those here in our community.

“Traditionally, Freedom Fiesta is a time for people who come back home. They are visiting for the July

4 weekend, and this is a place where you go and you meet people that you’ve known for a long time, maybe haven’t’ seen in a while but it’s also a good opportunity for those who are new to Seguin to come and see what our community is all about. It’s just a fun time from the Kiddie Parade that begins at 6 p.m. all the way to the entertainment that evening and with the vendors, we just want to give people the opportunity that maybe they can see some things that people have for sale that they didn’t know that these people had these items for sale right here in Seguin and even if you are out of Seguin in the surrounding area, we’d love to have you,” said Duncan.

Those interested in becoming a vendor are asked to stop by the radio station on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The radio station is located at 609 E. Court St.

This year’s Freedom Fiesta will feature live music by Texas Country Music Entertainer of the Year nominee Jesse Raub, Jr. The celebration will also include the annual Kiddie Parade, bounce houses, balloon animals, face painting, food trucks, non-profit food vendors, and beer garden. The celebration, again, will be held on Saturday, July 1 from 6 to 11 p.m. in Central Park. There is no cost to enter.

A presentation to Jacob by Running 4 Heroes is slated for later this month at his firehouse. Meanwhile, Loretta’s plate remains full with her other adult son Justin Garcia. For years, this community has

come to know Justin and his lifelong journey as he continues his struggle with vascular brain disease. This journey has taken him regularly to New York City for treatment.

Loretta shares that Justin’s bout with the illness has again turned critical, making this next trip to NYC even more important. To assist with travel and medical expenses, the family will host a plate and raffle fundraiser this weekend.

Despite his inability to still get around, big brother Jacob says he wants the focus and prayers of the community to now be with little brother Justin and encourages folks to show their support in any way they can this Saturday.

“The community has always supported Justin throughout his life which has helped him grow into where he is today and I don’t think Justin would be here today without the support of the community over the

The benefit for Justin Garcia will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Columbus Club of Seguin. The plates are $10 each and include chicken, sausage, potato salad, rice and beans.

Clifton “Buddy” Roland Nagel passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 73. Buddy had numerous health issues in his life’s journey, but he accepted them all with a positive, strong, and humorous attitude. Stage 4 colorectal cancer was his last challenge in life, and he did as he always did, managed it with incredible strength, courage, and humor. Cancer never got the best of him. He lived his life to the fullest every day.

Buddy was born on January 25, 1950, in Seguin, to Roland and Viola (Naumann) Nagel, given the name Clifton to honor his dad’s brother. During Buddy’s childhood, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Florida, while his dad served in the U.S. Air Force. Seguin was always his family’s home base so after his father retired from the military, the family returned to Seguin, where Buddy graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1968.

Like his father, Buddy was good with his hands. He had such big, strong hands. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build or repair with those hands. He was a skilled carpenter and artisan with a keen sense of understanding about how things worked. He was always willing to take the time to offer advice and assistance on house repairs, mechanical issues and more. He used these talents for the good of the community too. You can see and appreciate his work at The Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, the First Church, the Calaboose, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, The Guadalupe County Humane Society, The Woods Homestead, and many other locations around town.

Buddy’s knowledge and curiosity extended to many areas over the years. While living in Austin, Buddy worked in the construction field, building homes, and becoming a demolition expert. He created his own company, Nagel Construction, and took on historical home projects that extended into the Alamo Heights area. He studied Feng Shui in California and became a Feng Shui Master and advised clients in the best way to set up their homes. He was very involved in the Austin music scene as a Roadie for The Lotions and the Sound Manager for I-Tex and The Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin. He was a Master Scuba Diver and moved to Cozumel, teaching scuba diving to the many tourists who visited there. This also opened his passion for underwater photography. One summer he even traveled the country with a carnival based out of Chicago, setting up and breaking down the large rides. He built his own unique two-story home in Johnson City on the Pedernales River. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed landscaping and plants wherever he lived. He loved animals of all kinds, traveling anywhere and everywhere, was a great cook and had an extensive collection of miniature trains.

Buddy was always friendly with a great sense of humor. He had fun teasing and joking with everyone he met but especially with his beloved family, friends, doctors, nurses, and crew members. He had a curiosity about life and people that was contagious to anyone who was with him. He was a dreamer, an artist and a visionary.

In 2002, he reunited with the love of his life from his past, Jane Donegan, after being apart for almost 25 years. Buddy moved back to Seguin at that time to be with Jane and they were together until his passing. They were life partners and best friends for a total of 29 years.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Edward Sagebiel. He is survived by his love, Jane Donegan, three sisters, Ruth Sagebiel, Joan Nagel (husband, Tracy Weinberg) and Susan Nagel and his aunt Georgia Lee Naumann, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

Very special thank yous go to Larry Davis, Gail Parsons, Shantiel and Jr. Pardo, Elara Caring Hospice Care, each of Buddy’s doctors and nurses and the medical staffs at GRMC, Texas Oncology, MD Anderson, Ritchie Limb and Brace, Advanced Home Health Services and Remarkable Healthcare. Thank you for taking this final journey with us and for making it easier and with more love, comfort and kindness than we could have ever imagined.

A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to join us and share their stories and their memories of Buddy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Guadalupe County Humane Society, P. O. Box 1593, Seguin, TX 78156, the Seguin Conservation Society, P. O. Box 245, Seguin, TX 78156, or the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX 78155. These organizations were dear to Buddy’s heart.

Senate Dems To Mark End Of Roe With Legislation

(Washington, DC) -- Senate Democrats will mark the one-year anniversary of the end of Roe v. Wade by bringing legislation on reproductive health and access to a vote. While the bills aren’t expected to pass, Democrats want to force Republicans to go on the record and show where they stand on abortion. Senator Patty Murray of Washington told reporters the bills would guarantee women can travel freely across state lines for abortions, bolster data privacy for health and location data and protect doctors who continue to provide abortion care. She accused Republicans of ripping away a fundamental right for women. The conservative-majority Supreme Court overturned Roe on June 24th, 2022, essentially ending the constitutional right to abortion.

The American Medical Association now believes reporting will discourage pregnant women from getting help because they’ll be afraid of going to jail or losing custody of their child. The AMA found non-punishable public health approaches result in better outcomes. The organization wants the women to be reported to child protective services so they can help reduce the harm to the child.

Task

Force: Adults Should Be Screened For Anxiety

(Washington, DC) -- Adults should be screened for anxiety. That’s according to the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force which is recommending screenings for the first time. Published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the task force says the practice helps adults 19 to 64 more than it could possibly harm them, and is helpful in catching disorders that typically go undiagnosed. The group, made up of independent medical experts, noted there’s “insufficient evidence” to screen adults over 65. The recommendation also says about one in four men and 40 percent of women have some type of anxiety disorder in their lifetime.

Walkable Neighborhoods Are Good For Your Health

(San Diego, CA) -- Walkable neighborhoods are good for you, mentally and physically. A new report shows walkable neighborhoods build a stronger sense of community and improve health outcomes in adults, this is compared to car-dependent communities. UC San Diego’s Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science just published in the “Journal Health & Place.” Researchers say in pedestrian friendly neighborhoods folks are more likely to interact with their neighbors, embrace more physical activity, and there are fewer traffic incidents.

Our highly-skilled staff can handle your emergency.
