A boil for the Burnt Bean crew
Community business leaders cook up shrimp & crab in celebration
(Seguin) – The tables were turned recently when some local business owners made sure that the crew at Seguin’s most popular restaurant was well fed.
Instead of the food being served to the Burnt Bean’s growing customer base, a shrimp and crab boil was specially prepared and served for the restaurant crew.
Ken Kiel and Jay Kiel, of The Grounds Guys, initiated the meal plan. Ken says it was a no brainer to give back and show their appreciation to the restaurant who has not only been successful but has brought notoriety to the town.
“Jay and I, we’ve eaten at the Burnt Bean. We love the Burnt Bean and Jay and I were talking especially when the Burnt Bean was nominated for the James Beard Foundation Awards and Jay came up with the idea, he said ‘you know what we ought to do? We ought to give back to them because they’ve done so much for the community’ and I said, Boil, pg. 2

Man charged with local murder
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- A local man has been arrested and charged with the shooting death of a man near North Austin Street. Seguin Police say officers, with the help of Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Deputies, arrested Steven John Herrera, 18. Herrera was taken into custody Friday and charged with the June 16th murder of Juan Juarez. Juarez, 49, was reportedly shot while riding
his bike in the 100 block of Seideman St.
Seguin Police say the investigation is still ongoing. They also say the arrest is the result of collaborative and tireless efforts of the Seguin Patrol Division, Seguin Criminal Investigations Division, the Seguin Police C.A.S.E. Unit and the Guadalupe Sheriff's Department.
Attention drivers CONSTRUCTION AHEAD!
(Seguin) – Beginning today, Monday, June 26, a contractor with the Texas Department of Transportation will begin improvements to FM 78 (W. New Braunfels Street) between Fleming Street and East 8th Street.
The improvement project will include widening the existing roadway to add a center turn lane to improve safety and mobility.
During construction, the contractor will perform work in the right-of-way. Motorists will be prohibited in parking vehicles along FM 78 (West New Braunfels) between Fleming Street and East 8th Street.
TxDOT expects the project to finish up in December 2023.

‘I think that is a great idea. Let me do something.’ We both know Blake and Blake is like the VIP customer for Burnt Bean and Seguin and so I called, Blake and I said, ‘Blake, Jay and I were thinking about doing something for the Burnt Bean’ and I don’t think I had to finish my sentence and he said, ‘I’m in!’
So, the whole concept behind it is, when there is something successful, especially in your hometown, you want to praise that. You want to celebrate that,” said Kiel.
Jay says owning several businesses, he understands the importance for businesses to also be recognized not only for their services but for their role in the community.
“It was extremely important
honestly. That was really the whole thought process behind us doing it. It’s easy to sit there and say ‘hey, we want to do something’ and hire a caterer or go out and buy them something. We wanted them to know that it’s coming from our heart and like Ken said, I want to reiterate it, they’ve done so much for the community and have given a lot and so it’s important for them to know how we feel,” said Jay. Blake Bertling of Bertling Equipment Rental was the last of the trio of community members who did not hesitate to jump on ship to assist with the meal. Bertling says he is a fan of the downtown restaurant and believes it deserves every applause possible.
“I love this place. David and Ernest and even Anthony are the nicest people that I’ve ever met. They are good. I’ve known David since high school. They are really meticulous in what they do. They take pride in it and you don’t hardly see that anymore. I like it. They do quality stuff and I love their food and I like to promote it and like he said, it brings people to downtown. Two years ago, three years ago, you drive downtown Seguin, there’s nothing. It’s dead. Now, you drive down here on Saturday and there are people hustling and bustling all over town and people are asking from Missouri to New Mexico and Oklahoma that I know, ‘hey, I’ve heard about this Burnt Bean place,’ and I’m like ‘hey, well that’s right in our hometown, right in our back yard and it’s a good feeling to have some rock stars like that living right here in town,” said Bertling.
Burnt Bean Co-owner David Kirkland says he’s always up for someone else to do the cooking. He says for his staff to receive this as a gift of gratitude was even more special.
“I was excited because it doesn’t happen very often. It’s always us cooking for everybody else but when they offered to come cook food for us, I thought it was a good thing. I was excited especially when he said it was going to be a shrimp boil because it’s not barbecue. We eat plenty of barbecue and stuff around here so it’s a nice change of pace,” said Kirkland.
Co-owner Ernest Servantes says he too was grateful for the Friday afternoon shrimp boil. He says while he and David are typically the faces behind their success, it’s their dedicated employees who also deserve the recognition.
“When we are done every day after the shift, we eat as a family every day. We eat as a family and the reason that after the shift we eat as a family is because we talk about how the day was and everything and so they are used to eating as a family because we are a family. No one goes to every table and eat separate or have different shifts. We all clean together. We finish together and we eat together as a family and that’s what makes us so bonded as a team. I’ve always told these guys and you can ask them; I will take this team and compete against any best restaurant in the country. My team has my back and I have theirs,” said Servantes.
Among those dedicated employees is Chris Mosel. Mosel says it’s amazing how the Seguin community continues to show its support. He says they even have loyal fans who have never tasted the food but who are happy that the Burnt Bean is in Seguin.
“It’s just such a welcome gift because we cook and feed every day and we love doing it but it’s just nice to have it reciprocated back to us. Seguin has been amazing. Being someone who lives in New Braunfels and works in Seguin, I’m so welcomed by everybody here. All I
have to do is wear a Burnt Bean shirt and people just talk to me and thank me and tell me how awesome it is. I even have people tell me ‘man, that is such a great place and I’ve never been there’ because they drive by, they see the line and they really want to experience it, but they are just so proud to have something like this in Seguin,” said Mosel
Anthony Hernandez, who has been a Burnt Bean employee for almost three years, says he too was appreciative of the gift that was prepared personally by Ken, Jay and Blake.
“It’s very awesome to have someone come out here and cook for us. I’ve never really had anybody come out here to cook for me since I’ve always been cooking my whole life for everybody else, so this is actually an honor, a blessing for them to come do that for us,” said Hernandez.
Ken says as a community, it’s important to count the everyday blessings that exist and to make sure that folks support one another. He says in the end, it’s Seguin who benefits.
“I watched a TV show the other day and they had three barbecue places from Seguin and she said Seguin is a barbecue destination. So, what happens when people come into town to buy barbecue or whatever to eat at these places, guess what, they might go ‘Oh, Central Park is really cool. Oh, Starcke Park is really neat. I didn’t know Seguin had that.’ So, we are exposing people to Seguin and so we want to celebrate its success,” said Kiel.
Burnt Bean located in downtown Seguin on South Austin Street was recently a finalist for the James Beard Foundation Awards. It is also ranked No. 4 on Texas Monthly’s Top 50 Texas BBQ Joints. The restaurant continues to gain national recognition for being a leader in the barbecue industry.

Eight-Year-Old Seguin Girls Baseball Player Looks to Play with All-Girls Team in Kentucky
(Seguin) -- An eight-year-old Seguin girl who plays catcher in Seguin Boys Little League baseball is looking to play with an East Coast based all-girls 10 and under baseball team during a tournament in Kentucky in July.
Moira Sharp plays for the Rivercats little league boys baseball team in Seguin. Recently, she was offered a roster spot to play with the 10-Under Philly Girls Baseball team. The team is based in Philadelphia, but extends player invitations to girls all over the country.
Her mother Susann Whitecotton says her daughter prefers to play baseball as opposed to softball unlike most girls her age. She says as her daughter has gotten older, she has expressed more interest in playing on a all-girls team. This summer, Whitecotton contacted an organization to help link Moira up with an all-girls team.
“I reached out to the organization called Baseball for All, and (I was) just looking for the summer for her (...) to meet up with other girls that played,” Whitecotton said. “And within an hour Justine Siegal, the founder of the organization, emailed me back and said, ‘I have a team out of Philadelphia that needs players to fill their roster spots.’”
It was then that Whitecotton was put in touch with the head coach of the Philly Girls Baseball team and after a phone conversation with the coach, her daughter was invited to join the squad. Whitecotton feels the opportunity gives Moira a chance to join a baseball team and just play ball without the stigma of being “that girl” on the team.
Moira, or MoMo as she prefers to be called, has been playing little league
baseball since she was four years old. She says baseball is a challenge for her but she says she practices a lot and has gotten a great deal of help from her friend and coach, Jeremy Farley.
“He’s been teaching me how to bat correctly and how to position my feet (at) catcher so I don’t over miss a ball, And he’s been teaching me how to put my catcher’s gear on,” Moira said. “And it’s been really, really hard for me so he basically volunteered to help me.”
With all her practice and the help from her volunteer coach, Moira has future dreams of making history playing baseball for her favorite team in Seguin.
“Never in my life, I’ve never seen a girl on the (Seguin) River Monsters team and I want to be the first girl on the River Monsters team.”
Moira just finished 2nd grade at Weinert Elementary. She is an A-student with her favorite subject being math. MoMo is a Brownie Girl Scout. She is a member of Troop 1450. She is also a competitive dancer for Operation Dance at Second Story Dance and Company.
Moira hopes to play with the Philly Girls Baseball team at the Baseball For All Nationals tournament in Elizabeth, Kentucky July 12th through 16th. Her mother is looking for financial help to get her daughter to join the team at the tournament.
If you would like to help MoMo in her pursuit of playing in the tournament, you can contribute to a GoFundMe account set up to help with her expenses. You can search “Help Mo play baseball” on GoFundMe or you can follow the link here.

Clifton “Buddy” Roland Nagel passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 73. Buddy had numerous health issues in his life’s journey, but he accepted them all with a positive, strong, and humorous attitude. Stage 4 colorectal cancer was his last challenge in life, and he did as he always did, managed it with incredible strength, courage, and humor. Cancer never got the best of him. He lived his life to the fullest every day.
Buddy was born on January 25, 1950, in Seguin, to Roland and Viola (Naumann) Nagel, given the name Clifton to honor his dad’s brother. During Buddy’s childhood, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Florida, while his dad served in the U.S. Air Force. Seguin was always his family’s home base so after his father retired from the military, the family returned to Seguin, where Buddy graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1968.
Like his father, Buddy was good with his hands. He had such big, strong hands. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build or repair with those hands. He was a skilled carpenter and artisan with a keen sense of understanding about how things worked. He was always willing to take the time to offer advice and assistance on house repairs, mechanical issues and more. He used these talents for the good of the community too. You can see and appreciate his work at The Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, the First Church, the Calaboose, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, The Guadalupe County Humane Society, The Woods Homestead, and many other locations around town.
Buddy’s knowledge and curiosity extended to many areas over the years. While living in Austin, Buddy worked in the construction field, building homes, and becoming a demolition expert. He created his own company, Nagel Construction, and took on historical home projects that extended into the Alamo Heights area. He studied Feng Shui in California and became a Feng Shui Master and advised clients in the best way to set up their homes. He was very involved in the Austin music scene as a Roadie for The Lotions and the Sound Manager for I-Tex and The Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin. He was a Master Scuba Diver and moved to Cozumel, teaching scuba diving to the many tourists who visited there. This also opened his passion for underwater photography. One summer he even traveled the country with a carnival based out of Chicago, setting up and breaking down the large rides. He built his own unique two-story home in Johnson City on the Pedernales River. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed landscaping and plants wherever he lived. He loved animals of all kinds, traveling anywhere and everywhere, was a great cook and had an extensive collection of miniature trains.
Buddy was always friendly with a great sense of humor. He had fun teasing and joking with everyone he met but especially with his beloved family, friends, doctors, nurses, and crew members. He had a curiosity about life and people that was contagious to anyone who was with him. He was a dreamer, an artist and a visionary.
In 2002, he reunited with the love of his life from his past, Jane Donegan, after being apart for almost 25 years. Buddy moved back to Seguin at that time to be with Jane and they were together until his passing. They were life partners and best friends for a total of 29 years.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Edward Sagebiel. He is survived by his love, Jane Donegan, three sisters, Ruth Sagebiel, Joan Nagel (husband, Tracy Weinberg) and Susan Nagel and his aunt Georgia Lee Naumann, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
Very special thank yous go to Larry Davis, Gail Parsons, Shantiel and Jr. Pardo, Elara Caring Hospice Care, each of Buddy’s doctors and nurses and the medical staffs at GRMC, Texas Oncology, MD Anderson, Ritchie Limb and Brace, Advanced Home Health Services and Remarkable Healthcare. Most Americans Disapprove Of Supreme Court Abortion Decision
(Undated) -- A year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, six in ten voters think ending federal protection for abortion was the wrong move. A new NBC News poll found that 80 percent of women between 18 and 49 disapprove. That includes 60 percent of independents and a third of Republicans. More than half of men surveyed also disagree with the court’s decision, which effectively handed abortion rights to the states.
Majority Of OBGYNs Say Dobbs Ruling Worsened Pregnancy-Related Mortality
(San Francisco, CA) -- Most OBGYNs say the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade worsened pregnancy-related deaths. According to a poll from health policy nonprofit KFF, 64-percent of OBGYNs say the June 2022 Dobbs decision made mortality related to pregnancy worse. And 68-percent said the decision made treating pregnancy-related emergencies harder. According to a CDC report earlier this year, pregnancy-related deaths have risen in the U.S. since 2019, with nearly 33 deaths for every 100-thousand live births.
Nation’s Top Childrens Hospitals
(San Diego, CA) -- U.S. News & World Report is ranking the best medical care for children across the county. Only ten hospitals in the nation earn their way onto this annual honor roll. The top spot goes to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. California is the only state with two gold stars, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is number seven and San Diego’s Rady Childrens Hospital is number nine. These hospitals excel at clinical outcomes including maximizing survival and minimizing complications, ratios between staff and patients, and expert opinions.
U.S. Regulators Approve Lab Grown Meat
(Washington, DC) -- Regulators are approving the first “lab-grown” meat in the U.S. to be sold at restaurants and eventually supermarkets. The Agriculture Department okayed California companies Upside Foods and Good Meat to sell chicken made from animal cells instead of slaughtered birds. The FDA approved lab-grown meat from both companies as safe for human consumption months ago. Companies have been trying to launch the new way of meat production in hopes to reduce animal harm and environmental effects of selling meat.
