Freedom Fiesta Kiddie Parade set for this Saturday

(Seguin) – Patriotic Pride will be on display this Saturday evening thanks to Seguin’s youngest. Kids are invited to participate in the annual Freedom Fiesta Kiddie Parade. The parade hosted by the Guadalupe County Republican Women will help kick off this year’s Seguin Radio KWED’s Fourth of July celebration in downtown Seguin.

Kelly Follis, the coordinator for the event, says families are encouraged to grab their Fourth of July décor and enter their child in this year’s parade. She says not only is it free but there is no registration required.

“The Guadalupe County Republican Women love doing the Kiddie Parade. It started many, many years ago, probably 15 years ago with a little parade in the park on one of the mornings of Freedom Fiesta at the time. Now, we’ve moved it and KWED has been gracious to allow us to host this event as a kick-off event for Freedom Fiesta. It’s a family project. Entertainer of the Year Nominee Jesse Raub, Jr. Raub will be headlining KWED’s Freedom Fiesta on Saturday in downtown Seguin. Prior to his country music fame, Raub made the decision to quit a lucrative construction job and focus full-time on his music career. He tells the Seguin Daily News that it was not only a difficult time but one that came with an unforeseen challenge.

Three years ago, Raub was working in construction while simultaneously pursuing a career in music. After having many of his songs chart on Texas Music Chart and the Texas Radio Report, Raub made the decision then to quit the high paying construction business to concentrate solely on his music.

He says it was a tough choice that he could not make without the support of his wife, Rachel.

“When I decided to do that, I came home and told my wife I was gonna quit a very well-paying job,” Raub said. “And she never even batted an eye. She just said okay. And I said, ‘you’re not gonna talk me out of this?’ And she said, ‘No, I been wondering when you were gonna take the leap.’”

Having his wife by his side, Raub leaped full-time into the music business in 2020. Then a challenge that nobody saw coming happened right at the beginning of that decision.

“I made the choice to do it and then Covid hit.

That was just God I believe anyways going, ‘hey all true visions will be tested for authenticity.’ And if this is really what you want to do, here’s the first little roadblock,” said Raub.

As the music world and everything else was shut down, Raub went back to pen and paper and began to write songs.

“I gave my manager Brian my bucket list of writers and he just started reaching out to publicists. And so, it became at that point just songwriting for a year. And then when the shows started coming back around, we just said ‘let’s figure out where this goes,’” said Raub.

Ever since then, he says he’s never looked back.

“So, we’re in a good position. We did that and now I look back at the job I quit and I’m like, ‘I’m so glad I’m not doing that anymore,’” said Raub. “I mean I always ran dozers and backhoes, track hoes, you know I could always run anything. But man, I just didn’t miss it like I thought I would. So, I feel like we’re right where we’re supposed to be, doing what we’re supposed to do.”

With his band behind him, Raub will be doing what he does and that’s playing music this Saturday at Freedom Fiesta.

KWED’s Freedom Fiesta will feature food trucks, a beer garden and more, and even more live music with Susan Hickman opening up for Jesse Raub, Jr. at this weekend’s concert. It all starts Saturday at 6 pm. at Central Park in downtown Seguin.

So, they work on their entry into our parade, and they get to be a part of the parade and it’s a great time for parents, grandparents, friends and family to come out, take pictures, enjoy and hopefully, stay around and enjoy Freedom Fiesta,” said Follis.

Follis says although the parade is about participation, there are a few small prizes awarded for the top entries in the various categories. She says not only is it simple to enter but it’s free.

“It’s not about winning or losing. We do have prizes for the top 2 in each of our three categories which are walkers and then other riders that are riding in selfpropelled vehicles and then motorized vehicles and

they can decorate them as much or as little as they would like, and we have not extremely nice prizes but just some fun little prizes. So, it’s not about winning or losing. It’s about coming out and having a good time and celebrating the country and celebrating the family,” said Follis.

Presenting awards will be Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen and Guadalupe County Pct. 2 Commissioner Drew Engelke.

Serving as judges will be Guadalupe County Treasurer Linda Douglass, County Clerk Teresa Kiel and State District Judge Bill Old.

The Kiddie Parade gets underway at 6 p.m. Saturday. Families are asked to be in line by 5:45 p.m. Freedom Fiesta this year will welcome back kids activities plus a slate of food trucks, non-profit food booths and a beer garden. It will also feature live music by Texas Country Music nominee Jesse Raub Jr. Freedom Fiesta is free. The celebration will be held from 6 to 11p.m. on Saturday in Central Park.

Seguin’s Donovan Cray Receives Another College Football Offer

(Seguin) -- Seguin High School senior Donovan Cray has received another college football offer.

On Tuesday, Cray received an offer from Southwestern Assemblies of God University, a private university in Waxahachie, Texas.

The Lions play in the NAIA Sooner Athletic Conference. They went 6-3 in conference play in 2022 and were 7-3 overall. SAGU is lead by head coach Greg Ellis.

The offer is the third for Cray in the month of June. The Matador defensive back received an offer from NCAA Division-III power Mary Hardin-Baylor on June 6th. 10 days later, NAIA program North American University extended an offer to Cray. UMHB is based in Belton. NAU is located just outside of Houston.

Cray was an All-District 12-5A Honorable Mention as a safety in 2022. He played in 10 games for the Matadors during his junior season in which he had 56 tackles with an interception. In his sophomore campaign, Cray made 57 tackles with an interception and a sack in 10 games played.

A number of college football offers have been made to Seguin senior student-athletes this month. Running back John Jackson received an offer from McMurry University in Abilene on June 20th. On June 19th, offensive lineman Cooper Neumann received an offer from Louisiana Christian University based in Pineville, Louisiana. Tight end Jackson Pond has received

two offers this month. Pond was offered by McMurry on June 20th and by NAU on June 19th.

The Matadors will look to extend a program record and make the UIL playoffs for a 6th straight year in 2023. Seguin’s season starts on August 25th on the road against Alamo Heights. The Matadors went 6-5 in 2022 under second year head coach Craig Dailey.

Mary Anne

Colvin Valentine, age 66 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on June 8, 2023. Mary Anne was born on November 1, 1956 in Kenedy, Texas to Mary Louise (Knell) and James Thomas Colvin, Sr. Preceding Mary Anne in death were her parents, her brother, Billy Colvin, and her nephews, Josh Colvin and Trevor Colvin.

Survivors include her brothers, Jim T. Colvin, Jr., M.D. and wife, Pam, and Dennis Colvin and wife, Vicki; nieces and nephews, Dr. Chris Colvin and wife, Julie, Clint Colvin and, wife, Jennifer, Corrie Colvin Williams and husband, James, Cathie Colvin Crain and husband, Andrew, Aaron Colvin and wife, Faith, and Zac Colvin and wife, Nicole; numerous great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and other loving family members.

Mary Anne was the youngest of four children. As a child, her father was elected Mayor of Kenedy, Texas, which gave her many photo-ops. She was a twirler in high school and a drum major her senior year. Mary Anne was smart, artistic, kind, and loved her animals. She was a 1975 graduate of Kenedy High School. She was a member of the Cluter National Thespian Society, National Honor Society, and Valedictorian of her senior class. She enjoyed art and took lessons while in Kenedy. That artistic drive continued until her health declined. She enjoyed caring for animalsbirds, dogs, and especially cats. Mary Anne attended Texas Lutheran University for one year and graduated from A&M in 1979 with a degree in Accounting obtaining her CPA. She worked as a Certified Public Accountant at Frost Bank in their cattle division and also Brown and Root Company in Houston, Texas. As her health declined, she moved to Seguin to be closer to her family.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Monday, July 3, 2023, at 10 A.M. at San Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin. Followed by a reception at First Methodist Church in Hierholzer Hall in Seguin.

Schulze

Cheryl Ann Wallace Schulze, age 62 of Seguin, returned home to the Lord on June 20, 2023. Cheryl was born on August 4, 1960, in New Braunfels, Texas to J. W. Wallace, and Shirley Ann Bueche.

Cheryl graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in 1978. Upon completing high school, it was her dream to become a secretary. She was well-known in the real estate law community.

On May 5th, 1979 Cheryl and Roger were married and just recently celebrated their 44th year of marriage.

Cheryl will be remembered as a devoted wife, sister, Nana, friend, and most importantly a mom. She had a sense of adventure in camping, scuba diving, and hiking. She enjoyed reading, cross-stitching, and making memories with her three grandchildren. Her funny, uplifting personality could bring joy and laughter into any room. Although her family and friends are heartbroken about her passing she will be remembered for her strength and tenacity that has been passed down to her children and grandchildren.

Cheryl is preceded in death by her father, mother, and sister, Penny Armstrong.

Survivors include her loving husband of 44 years, Roger Schulze, daughter Dawn Luu and husband Vu Luu; son, Gary Schulze; grandchildren who knew and loved her as Nana, Emma Ann Luu, Ethan Aubry Luu, and Emery Amelia Luu; mother, Katie Wallace; siblings, Allen Wallace, Curtis Wallace and wife Susan, Harden Wallace and wife Michelle, April Brown and husband Ray, Jerry Wallace and wife Alicia, Sonia Salmon, and husband Jason; brother-in-law, Bryan Schulze, and wife Sheryl; sister-in-law, Barbara Hunt, and partner Mark; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, her beloved dog, Mickey, and many friends.

Visitation will begin at 1 pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Crossroads Church followed by a memorial service celebrating her life at 2 p.m. with Pastor Marcus Avalos officiating. Dr. Thomas Walter Krohn, age 76 of Seguin, passed away suddenly related to heart issues on June 17, 2023. Tom was born on October 1, 1946, in Wurzburg, Germany to Dr. Walter and Karin Krohn. He lived in Germany until the age of 6 when he and his parents immigrated in 1953 to the United States settling in Galveston, Texas and then eventually Waco, Texas. He graduated from Richfield High School in Waco, Texas in 1965. He attended Texas Lutheran College where he met his wife of 43 years, Jill Elaine Zunker. They married in Seguin, Texas on August 9th, 1969.

After he graduated from Texas Lutheran College in 1969, he went on to further his education at the University of Houston College of Optometry, graduating in 1977. He moved back to Seguin shortly after graduation to practice Optometry, and he was still practicing until his death. He was an optometrist for 46 years, providing eye care to thousands of patients throughout the Seguin community and surrounding areas.

Tom was also active in various civic clubs and organizations in Seguin. He was a member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church and then later Faith Lutheran Church. Tom loved to travel, and he especially loved to go on cruises with friends and family. He enjoyed getting together and playing cards with his friends, attending his grandchildren’s events, and spending time with his family.

Tom is preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Jill Zunker Krohn, and his parents, Dr. Walter Krohn and Karin Von Huebschmann Krohn.

Survivors include his loving daughters, Dr. Kim Krohn Albracht and husband Matt, Kara Krohn Huesser and husband Denny, and Kelli Krohn Fairbairn; grandchildren, Nicholas Albracht, John Albracht, Lauren Albracht, Brooke Albracht, Hayley Huesser and Hayden Huesser and Jack Fairbairin; brothers, Klaus Krohn and Martin Krohn; sister-in-law, Kay Zunker; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating Tom’s life will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin with Pastor Andrew Cave officiating. A reception will be held at Faith Lutheran Church immediately following the service.

Nagel

Clifton “Buddy” Roland Nagel passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 73. Buddy had numerous health issues in his life’s journey, but he accepted them all with a positive, strong, and humorous attitude. Stage 4 colorectal cancer was his last challenge in life, and he did as he always did, managed it with incredible strength, courage, and humor. Cancer never got the best of him. He lived his life to the fullest every day.

Buddy was born on January 25, 1950, in Seguin, to Roland and Viola (Naumann) Nagel, given the name Clifton to honor his dad’s brother. During Buddy’s childhood, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Florida, while his dad served in the U.S. Air Force. Seguin was always his family’s home base so after his father retired from the military, the family returned to Seguin, where Buddy graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1968.

Like his father, Buddy was good with his hands. He had such big, strong hands. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build or repair with those hands. He was a skilled carpenter and artisan with a keen sense of understanding about how things worked. He was always willing to take the time to offer advice and assistance on house repairs, mechanical issues and more. He used these talents for the good of the community too. You can see and appreciate his work at The Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, the First Church, the Calaboose, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, The Guadalupe County Humane Society, The Woods Homestead, and many other locations around town.

Buddy’s knowledge and curiosity extended to many areas over the years. While living in Austin, Buddy worked in the construction field, building homes, and becoming a demolition expert. He created his own company, Nagel Construction, and took on historical home projects that extended into the Alamo Heights area. He studied Feng Shui in California and became a Feng Shui Master and advised clients in the best way to set up their homes. He was very involved in the Austin music scene as a Roadie for The Lotions and the Sound Manager for I-Tex and The Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin. He was a Master Scuba Diver and moved to Cozumel, teaching scuba diving to the many tourists who visited there. This also opened his passion for underwater photography. One summer he even traveled the country with a carnival based out of Chicago, setting up and breaking down the large rides. He built his own unique two-story home in Johnson City on the Pedernales River. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed landscaping and plants wherever he lived. He loved animals of all kinds, traveling anywhere and everywhere, was a great cook and had an extensive collection of miniature trains.

Buddy was always friendly with a great sense of humor. He had fun teasing and joking with everyone he met but especially with his beloved family, friends, doctors, nurses, and crew members. He had a curiosity about life and people that was contagious to anyone who was with him. He was a dreamer, an artist and a visionary.

In 2002, he reunited with the love of his life from his past, Jane Donegan, after being apart for almost 25 years. Buddy moved back to Seguin at that time to be with Jane and they were together until his passing. They were life partners and best friends for a total of 29 years.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Edward Sagebiel. He is survived by his love, Jane Donegan, three sisters, Ruth Sagebiel, Joan Nagel (husband, Tracy Weinberg) and Susan Nagel and his aunt Georgia Lee Naumann, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to join us and share their stories and their memories of Buddy.

Virginia Lee Cook Head, age 84 of Seguin, passed away on June 8, 2023. Virginia was born on December 27, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas to Eura Lee (Goode) and Ernest Charles Cook.

Virginia had no formal education but she took care of her kids and extended family by getting a job at Motorola where she worked for almost 30 years. At one point, she was caring for 4 generations of her family all while working. She never complained and she made it all seem so easy. After growing up, we realized just how much she did for us all. After retirement, she enjoyed taking care of her great-grandchildren so their parents could go to work. We will miss her strength. She was the glue that held our family together.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, brothers, E. C. Cook, Jr., and Raymond Cook, sisters, Florine Flores and Emma Jean Winters, her former husband, Jesse Byron Head, Sr., and step-daughter, Marsha Diane Brown.

Survivors include her children, Gina Lee Head Touchstone and husband Fernando Garcia, III, Jesse Byron Head, Jr., and wife Mendi, and Cary Darlene Head Dornak; step-son-in-law, Bill Brown; grandchildren, Lindsey Elizabeth Head, Jessica Bailey Head, Maci Savannah Smith, Marshall Harrison Smith, Meredith Lila Paschal, Layton Allison and, wife Laura, and Meagan Krueger and husband Derek; step-grandson, Bradley Brown; greatgrandchildren, Charlie and Hunter Krueger, Brooklyn Hicks and Bella and Brea Allison; sisters, Maxine Postert, and Shirley Ray; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Maria (Licha) Diaz De Leon Molina was born on June 14, 1936 in Cloete, Coahuila, Mexico and passed peacefully at home on June 25, 2023 to reunite with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ramon and Antonia Diaz De Leon.

Maria is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Tomas Molina Jr., 2 sons, Mario and Manuel Molina and 2 daughters-in-love, Alice and Rita Molina and 7 adult grandchildren: Adam (& Gloria), Nicholas (& Ashley), David (& Roxanne), Clarissa (& Raul), Veronica (& Michael), Kristina (& Chris) and Kenny Rodriguez. Maria was also blessed with 18 great-grandchildren and 1 greatgreat granddaughter.

Maria worked as an elementary school lunch monitor for 6 years after retiring from the workforce. As a lunch monitor, Maria was “grandma” to administrators, teachers, and students alike. At age 86, she wanted to re-apply at the school to work with the children again. In Matthew 19:14, Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.” Inspired by the Word of God, Maria dedicated her life wholeheartedly to family and all others, especially the children, in the name of Jesus and our Holy Mother, Mary.

Visitation will be at Palmer Mortuary on Thursday, June 29, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Holy Rosary will be recited by her grandchildren at 7:00 p.m.

Family and friends are invited to meet on Friday, June 30, 2023, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery.

Milton Frank “Red” Krueger, age 86 of Seguin, passed away on June 26, 2023. He was born in Comal County on November 16, 1936, to Minnie (Bierstedt) and Carl (Charlie) Krueger. Red proudly served his country in the United States Navy and will also be remembered as a 37-year employee of CMC (SMI) Steel Corporation.

Red is preceded in death by his wife Cathy Krueger, daughter Wesley Ann Shehane, his parents, and brothers Carl Krueger and Wayne Krueger, and his nephew Larry Oliver.

He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Herbold, and husband Ruben Sanchez; son-in-law, Gary Shehane; brother, Allen Krueger, and wife Bertha; sister, Janet Coffman; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

New COVID Variant Confirmed In ND & 5 States (Bismarck, ND) -- A new variant of COVID-19 has been detected in several western states. Cases of the EU-11 strain have been confirmed in North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and Montana. It is still not known whether there will be different symptoms that emerge in U.S. cases of the new strain. It’s believed EU-11 could be more transmissible and the strain now accounts for nearly nine-percent of COVID cases in North Dakota and the other five states.

Rep. Cori Bush Sponsors Bill To Pay Expenses For Abortion Travel (St. Louis, MO) -- U.S. Representative Cori Bush has signed on to help those who have to travel out of their home state for abortions. She is one of the sponsors for the House Reproductive Health Travel Fund Act. The bill would fund 350-million-dollars in grants for five years to help pay for a woman’s travel-related expenses. Those would include lodging, meals, childcare, translation services and lost wages. Representative Bush says Congress has a moral responsibility to do everything it can to support people who need abortion care.

Texas Resident Gets Malaria After Working In Cameron County (Austin, TX) -- A Texas agency says a resident came down with malaria after working outdoors near the Mexican border. A health advisory about the case in Cameron County was issued Friday by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The agency says it’s working with local health departments to determine if anyone else might have been exposed to the disease. No other cases have been found so far. D-S-H-S says it’s the first case of malaria from a source inside the state since 1994.

Amazon Clinic Delayed After Congressional Concerns (Washington, DC) -- Amazon’s telehealth rollout may be delayed after Congress showed concerns about the service. Democrats Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts and Peter Welch from Vermont wrote a letter to the e-commerce giant expressing concerns that Amazon Clinic puts private health data at risk. They noted that a recent Washington Post investigation showed how Amazon Clinic has users sign away rights to a lot of their private data to use the services. According to Politico, Amazon Clinic is delaying its launch by about three weeks.
