Freedom Fiesta announces food menu

Plans in place for Saturday night celebration

(Seguin) – You are reminded to come hungry to this year’s Freedom Fiesta.

That’s because taste buds will be treated to all their favorite foods during the annual food truck style Fourth of July celebration.

Not only will there be 9 food trucks, but five local non-profit food vendors and two for profit food vendors will also be a part of Saturday night’s festivities in downtown Seguin.

The menu board this year includes a fleet of trucks. They include Grouchy Mama’s known for its gourmet cheeseburgers and Cubano sandwiches served with pasta salad, fries, or chips.

The Whacked Out Weiner will be serving a variety of hot dogs, nachos and Frito pie.

Chick-Fil-A will also be on site with its original sandwich, spicy sandwiches, nuggets, chips, cookies, brownies, and grilled wraps.

Wiggle Waggle will also help cool folks off with its shaved ice, watermelon slices, floats, smoothies and mangonadas.

Kids events, activities set for this year’s Freedom Fiesta

KWED radio prepares for downtown celebration

(Seguin) -- Seguin Radio KWED is making sure kids have plenty of fun during this year’s annual Freedom Fiesta. The event will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday in Central Park.

Helping kids get a jump start into their Fourth of July celebration will be HR Party Rental in San Antonio.

Just like last year, kids will again be kept busy all night long with a street filled with bouncy houses. The company says it plans to keep toddlers to big kids busy with close to 10 to 15 fun inflatables and obstacle courses.

The cost for unlimited jumping will be $10 a child. HR Party Rental this year will also feature its mechanical bull. Cost is $5 a person.

Helping kids transition into their favorite superhero or character will be Robynisms Face Painting.

This will be Robynisms first time to provide artwork during the annual celebration. The local face painter is one of the area’s popular artists specializing in face, body and home art.

Twisting up some real cool fun will be Super Awesome Balloon Animals. As per tradition, the company will again return to Seguin providing an assortment of fun animal balloons. The company is known for is private creations plus its creativity over at Wonderland Jump and Play in San Antonio.

Kids, of course, are invited to help kick off this year’s Freedom Fiesta at 6 p.m. with the annual Kiddie Parade. Kids are invited to walk, ride or cruise throughout Central Park. Leading this year’s march around the downtown square will be Seguin’s very own Uncle Sam a.k.a. Texas State Representative John Kuempel.

Participation is made simple. Show your patriotic pride by decorating strollers, wagons, bikes, scooters, skateboards, or motorized vehicles. The top entries in the walking, riding and motorized categories will be presented prizes by Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen and Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 2 Drew Engelke. The nonpolitical event is hosted by the Guadalupe County Republican Women and again, is held in conjunction with Freedom Fiesta. No sign-up is required. Families are just asked to simply line up in their respective category minutes prior to the event.

This year’s Freedom Fiesta will include just over 15 food trucks and other non-profit food vendors.

The celebration will feature live music by Texas Country Music Entertainer of the Year nominee Jesse Raub, Jr. Also sharing the stage for a live performance will be Susan Hickman.

Freedom Fiesta is free. The event will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday in downtown Seguin.

Jesse Raub, Jr. shares long time connection with Country Star Cody Johnson

(Seguin) -- We wrap up our look this week at Texas Country Music Entertainer of the Year Nominee Jesse Raub, Jr. Raub will headline KWED's Freedom Fiesta at Central Park in downtown Seguin on Saturday.

Raub has shared the stage with the likes of country stars Lee Ann Womack and Mark Chesnutt. He’s also graced the stage countless times with his good friend Cody Johnson, whom he's known for nearly two decades.

Johnson's popularity has skyrocketed over the last few years and Raub says he's happy for the success and notoriety his friend has received for promoting a brand of traditional country music.

"Obviously, we're super stoked for the lift that he's getting and just seeing him go out there and just fly the flag for the rest of us and really try to get back to our roots of country music. You know obviously, we've seen it kinda steer away from that," Raub said. "Not that's a bad thing, but man I couldn't do that and sell it. Cody couldn't do some of that and sell it. We sell our channel in country music."

Raub and Johnson have teamed to write a number of songs. Raub was a co-writer on Johnson's songs "The

Way She Loves Me" and "Dance Her Home." The latter tune scored Raub his first gold record as a songwriter and reached the number one spot on the Texas Radio chart.

Raub will join his friend on the "Cody Johnson and Friends" tour this summer. The next leg of the tour will take place on July 21st in St. Louis, Missouri and will also feature Randy Houser.

But before he heads north to play with his longtime friend, Raub says he's ready to put on a show at Seguin's Central Park.

"We want to come down there and share our songs and party with you guys. We're gonna turn Seguin into a honky-tonk for a night so, I hope y'all are ready,” said Raub.

Jesse Raub, Jr. will headline Freedom Fiesta on Saturday. Susan Hickman will open the concert, which is free and open to the public.

This year's event will also include the annual Kiddie Parade at 6 p.m.; face painting, non-profit food vendors, food trucks, bouncy houses plus a beer garden.

Dilly Deli will also join this year’s celebration with its cheese steaks, club sandwiches, BLT sandwiches, Italian sandwiches, potato salad and chips.

Any ‘Wich Way will host a series of food to include Beignet bites, bread pudding, cheesecake eggrolls, Elvis club, s’mores ‘wich, and chicory coffee.

Folks are also expected to gravitate to Mister Softee for ice cream cones, sundaes, floats, shakes, swirls, paletas, malts, ice pops, banaa boats and ice cream sandwiches.

Donna Kika’s Tacos will also make its debut featuring its chalupas, gorditas, quesadillas and tortas.

Couples Catering will also be rolling up featuring its chicken bacon ranch quesadillas, ranch hand tots, carne asada, fries, street tacos, pork chop on a stick, sausage on a stick and mozzarella sticks.

Taste buds will also sure dig Sweet Rentals. Sweet Rentals will feature kettle corn, ribbon fries, chicken on a stick and corn dogs.

Joining in on the fun will be several non-profit organizations.

On the list is Catholic Daughters of the Americas with funnel cakes. Seguin Youth Sports League – Seguin Matadors will also be grilling up chicken fajitas.

A pair of churches will also be participating as

food vendors. They include Straight Street Church with burritos and lemonade and Victory Christian Center with its pulled pork loaded potatoes.

Helping to wash things down will be the Seguin Chapter 555 Order of the Eastern Star with sodas and water, Las Delicias Aguas with a variety of Aquas Frescas, and the Columbus Club of Seguin or KC’s who will be returning to host this year’s beer garden.

Kicking off this year’s Freedom Fiesta at 6 p.m. will be the annual Kiddie Parade around Central Park. The event will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday in downtown Seguin. Freedom Fiesta is free.

Mary Anne

Colvin Valentine, age 66 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on June 8, 2023. Mary Anne was born on November 1, 1956 in Kenedy, Texas to Mary Louise (Knell) and James Thomas Colvin, Sr.

Preceding Mary Anne in death were her parents, her brother, Billy Colvin, and her nephews, Josh Colvin and Trevor Colvin.

Survivors include her brothers, Jim T. Colvin, Jr., M.D. and wife, Pam, and Dennis Colvin and wife, Vicki; nieces and nephews, Dr. Chris Colvin and wife, Julie, Clint Colvin and, wife, Jennifer, Corrie Colvin Williams and husband, James, Cathie Colvin Crain and husband, Andrew, Aaron Colvin and wife, Faith, and Zac Colvin and wife, Nicole; numerous great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and other loving family members.

Mary Anne was the youngest of four children. As a child, her father was elected Mayor of Kenedy, Texas, which gave her many photo-ops. She was a twirler in high school and a drum major her senior year. Mary Anne was smart, artistic, kind, and loved her animals. She was a 1975 graduate of Kenedy High School. She was a member of the Cluter National Thespian Society, National Honor Society, and Valedictorian of her senior class. She enjoyed art and took lessons while in Kenedy. That artistic drive continued until her health declined. She enjoyed caring for animalsbirds, dogs, and especially cats. Mary Anne attended Texas Lutheran University for one year and graduated from A&M in 1979 with a degree in Accounting obtaining her CPA. She worked as a Certified Public Accountant at Frost Bank in their cattle division and also Brown and Root Company in Houston, Texas. As her health declined, she moved to Seguin to be closer to her family.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Monday, July 3, 2023, at 10 A.M. at San Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin. Followed by a reception at First Methodist Church in Hierholzer Hall in Seguin.

Jose

Sanchez Perez, age 81 of Seguin, passed away on June 28, 2023.

Jose was born on April 1, 1942, in Alice, Texas to Felicita (Sanchez) and Procopio Perez.

Jose was raised in Alice, Texas, and graduated from Alice High School.

He spent a short stint in the United States Army before graduating from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in criminology and corrections. Jose and Jane met at First Baptist Church in Houston and were later married on March 27, 1971. He retired from Bexar County/ Attorney General’s Office as an Adult Probation Officer. Jane and Jose were active members of First Baptist Church in Seguin.

Jose is preceded in death by his son Andres Perez, his parents, his brother Julian Perez and wife Terry, and his mother-in-law and father-inlaw, Mildred and Myron Bergquist.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Jane Bergquist Perez; daughters, Felicia Perez, and Amy Shepperd, and husband Chris, and Naomi Angellford and husband Marcellus; grandchildren, Kiera, Adelynn, Gabbie, Charleston, and Cameron Shepperd, and Boaz and Selah Angellford; brother, Procopio “Coco” Perez, and wife Alicia; sister, Carmen Moreno, and husband Valdo; brothers-in-law, Joe Bergquist and wife Laura, Eric Bergquist and wife Linda and Emil Bergquist and wife Ralene; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery followed by a gathering at the Church Fellowship Hall. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Nagel

Clifton “Buddy” Roland Nagel passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 73. Buddy had numerous health issues in his life’s journey, but he accepted them all with a positive, strong, and humorous attitude. Stage 4 colorectal cancer was his last challenge in life, and he did as he always did, managed it with incredible strength, courage, and humor. Cancer never got the best of him. He lived his life to the fullest every day.

Buddy was born on January 25, 1950, in Seguin, to Roland and Viola (Naumann) Nagel, given the name Clifton to honor his dad’s brother. During Buddy’s childhood, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Florida, while his dad served in the U.S. Air Force. Seguin was always his family’s home base so after his father retired from the military, the family returned to Seguin, where Buddy graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1968.

Like his father, Buddy was good with his hands. He had such big, strong hands. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build or repair with those hands. He was a skilled carpenter and artisan with a keen sense of understanding about how things worked. He was always willing to take the time to offer advice and assistance on house repairs, mechanical issues and more. He used these talents for the good of the community too. You can see and appreciate his work at The Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, the First Church, the Calaboose, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, The Guadalupe County Humane Society, The Woods Homestead, and many other locations around town.

Buddy’s knowledge and curiosity extended to many areas over the years. While living in Austin, Buddy worked in the construction field, building homes, and becoming a demolition expert. He created his own company, Nagel Construction, and took on historical home projects that extended into the Alamo Heights area. He studied Feng Shui in California and became a Feng Shui Master and advised clients in the best way to set up their homes. He was very involved in the Austin music scene as a Roadie for The Lotions and the Sound Manager for I-Tex and The Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin. He was a Master Scuba Diver and moved to Cozumel, teaching scuba diving to the many tourists who visited there. This also opened his passion for underwater photography. One summer he even traveled the country with a carnival based out of Chicago, setting up and breaking down the large rides. He built his own unique two-story home in Johnson City on the Pedernales River. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed landscaping and plants wherever he lived. He loved animals of all kinds, traveling anywhere and everywhere, was a great cook and had an extensive collection of miniature trains.

Buddy was always friendly with a great sense of humor. He had fun teasing and joking with everyone he met but especially with his beloved family, friends, doctors, nurses, and crew members. He had a curiosity about life and people that was contagious to anyone who was with him. He was a dreamer, an artist and a visionary.

In 2002, he reunited with the love of his life from his past, Jane Donegan, after being apart for almost 25 years. Buddy moved back to Seguin at that time to be with Jane and they were together until his passing. They were life partners and best friends for a total of 29 years.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Edward Sagebiel. He is survived by his love, Jane Donegan, three sisters, Ruth Sagebiel, Joan Nagel (husband, Tracy Weinberg) and Susan Nagel and his aunt Georgia Lee Naumann, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

Very special thank yous go to Larry Davis, Gail Parsons, Shantiel and Jr. Pardo, Elara Caring Hospice Care, each of Buddy’s doctors and nurses and the medical staffs at GRMC, Texas Oncology, MD Anderson, Ritchie Limb and Brace, Advanced Home Health Services and Remarkable Healthcare. Thank you for taking this final journey with us and for making it easier and with more love, comfort and kindness than we could have ever imagined.

A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to join us and share their stories and their memories of Buddy.

Schulze

Cheryl Ann Wallace Schulze, age 62 of Seguin, returned home to the Lord on June 20, 2023. Cheryl was born on August 4, 1960, in New Braunfels, Texas to J. W. Wallace, and Shirley Ann Bueche.

Cheryl graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in 1978. Upon completing high school, it was her dream to become a secretary. She was well-known in the real estate law community.

On May 5th, 1979 Cheryl and Roger were married and just recently celebrated their 44th year of marriage.

Cheryl will be remembered as a devoted wife, sister, Nana, friend, and most importantly a mom. She had a sense of adventure in camping, scuba diving, and hiking. She enjoyed reading, cross-stitching, and making memories with her three grandchildren. Her funny, uplifting personality could bring joy and laughter into any room. Although her family and friends are heartbroken about her passing she will be remembered for her strength and tenacity that has been passed down to her children and grandchildren.

Cheryl is preceded in death by her father, mother, and sister, Penny Armstrong.

Survivors include her loving husband of 44 years, Roger Schulze, daughter Dawn Luu and husband Vu Luu; son, Gary Schulze; grandchildren who knew and loved her as Nana, Emma Ann Luu, Ethan Aubry Luu, and Emery Amelia Luu; mother, Katie Wallace; siblings, Allen Wallace, Curtis Wallace and wife Susan, Harden Wallace and wife Michelle, April Brown and husband Ray, Jerry Wallace and wife Alicia, Sonia Salmon, and husband Jason; brother-in-law, Bryan Schulze, and wife Sheryl; sister-in-law, Barbara Hunt, and partner Mark; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, her beloved dog, Mickey, and many friends.

Visitation will begin at 1 pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Crossroads Church followed by a memorial service celebrating her life at 2 p.m. with Pastor Marcus Avalos officiating. Dr. Thomas Walter Krohn, age 76 of Seguin, passed away suddenly related to heart issues on June 17, 2023. Tom was born on October 1, 1946, in Wurzburg, Germany to Dr. Walter and Karin Krohn. He lived in Germany until the age of 6 when he and his parents immigrated in 1953 to the United States settling in Galveston, Texas and then eventually Waco, Texas. He graduated from Richfield High School in Waco, Texas in 1965. He attended Texas Lutheran College where he met his wife of 43 years, Jill Elaine Zunker. They married in Seguin, Texas on August 9th, 1969.

After he graduated from Texas Lutheran College in 1969, he went on to further his education at the University of Houston College of Optometry, graduating in 1977. He moved back to Seguin shortly after graduation to practice Optometry, and he was still practicing until his death. He was an optometrist for 46 years, providing eye care to thousands of patients throughout the Seguin community and surrounding areas.

Tom was also active in various civic clubs and organizations in Seguin. He was a member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church and then later Faith Lutheran Church. Tom loved to travel, and he especially loved to go on cruises with friends and family. He enjoyed getting together and playing cards with his friends, attending his grandchildren’s events, and spending time with his family.

Tom is preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Jill Zunker Krohn, and his parents, Dr. Walter Krohn and Karin Von Huebschmann Krohn.

Survivors include his loving daughters, Dr. Kim Krohn Albracht and husband Matt, Kara Krohn Huesser and husband Denny, and Kelli Krohn Fairbairn; grandchildren, Nicholas Albracht, John Albracht, Lauren Albracht, Brooke Albracht, Hayley Huesser and Hayden Huesser and Jack Fairbairin; brothers, Klaus Krohn and Martin Krohn; sister-in-law, Kay Zunker; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

Virginia Lee Cook Head, age 84 of Seguin, passed away on June 8, 2023. Virginia was born on December 27, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas to Eura Lee (Goode) and Ernest Charles Cook.

Virginia had no formal education but she took care of her kids and extended family by getting a job at Motorola where she worked for almost 30 years. At one point, she was caring for 4 generations of her family all while working. She never complained and she made it all seem so easy. After growing up, we realized just how much she did for us all. After retirement, she enjoyed taking care of her great-grandchildren so their parents could go to work. We will miss her strength. She was the glue that held our family together.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, brothers, E. C. Cook, Jr., and Raymond Cook, sisters, Florine Flores and Emma Jean Winters, her former husband, Jesse Byron Head, Sr., and step-daughter, Marsha Diane Brown.

Maria (Licha) Diaz De Leon Molina was born on June 14, 1936 in Cloete, Coahuila, Mexico and passed peacefully at home on June 25, 2023 to reunite with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ramon and Antonia Diaz De Leon.

Maria is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Tomas Molina Jr., 2 sons, Mario and Manuel Molina and 2 daughters-in-love, Alice and Rita Molina and 7 adult grandchildren: Adam (& Gloria), Nicholas (& Ashley), David (& Roxanne), Clarissa (& Raul), Veronica (& Michael), Kristina (& Chris) and Kenny Rodriguez. Maria was also blessed with 18 great-grandchildren and 1 greatgreat granddaughter.

Maria worked as an elementary school lunch monitor for 6 years after retiring from the workforce. As a lunch monitor, Maria was “grandma” to administrators, teachers, and students alike. At age 86, she wanted to re-apply at the school to work with the children again. In Matthew 19:14, Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.” Inspired by the Word of God, Maria dedicated her life wholeheartedly to family and all others, especially the children, in the name of Jesus and our Holy Mother, Mary.

Visitation will be at Palmer Mortuary on Thursday, June 29, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Holy Rosary will be recited by her grandchildren at 7:00 p.m.

Family and friends are invited to meet on Friday, June 30, 2023, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery.

Milton Frank “Red” Krueger, age 86 of Seguin, passed away on June 26, 2023. He was born in Comal County on November 16, 1936, to Minnie (Bierstedt) and Carl (Charlie) Krueger. Red proudly served his country in the United States Navy and will also be remembered as a 37-year employee of CMC (SMI) Steel Corporation.

Red is preceded in death by his wife Cathy Krueger, daughter Wesley Ann Shehane, his parents, and brothers Carl Krueger and Wayne Krueger, and his nephew Larry Oliver.

He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Herbold, and husband Ruben Sanchez; son-in-law, Gary Shehane; brother, Allen Krueger, and wife Bertha; sister, Janet Coffman; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 30, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Paul Theiss officiating. Interment will follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Mark Krueger, Richard Krueger, Troy Krueger, Rusty Krueger, Dustin Krueger, Patrick Krueger, and Daryl Krueger.

Bad Air Warnings Again For NY Due To Canadian Wildfire Smoke

(New York, NY) -- Bad air warnings are being issued again for New York because of Canadian wildfire smoke. The EPA says health effects can range from runny eyes, drippy nose and coughing to trouble breathing, especially for people with asthma, COPD or heart conditions and that can cause premature death. According to the CDC, kids, pregnant women, the elderly, and first responders are most at risk from smoky conditions. New York health officials recommend limiting outdoor activity, staying inside as much as possible and wearing a tight-fitting mask.

CDC Issues Malaria Warning

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is warning that malaria is spreading locally in the United States. Cases have been seen in Florida and Texas, the first documented cases of local transmission in 20 years. The disease is most commonly spread by mosquitoes but can also be spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, needle-sharing and from mother to fetus. While rare in the U.S., there are more than 240 million cases of malaria worldwide each year, the vast majority in Africa. Symptoms can include fevers, chills, headache and fatigue.

NYC Students To Practice Mindful Breathing

(New York, NY) -- New York City students are going to start practicing mindful breathing. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade will be led in two-to-five minutes of mindful breathing practices every day. The city has already started training school staff to add mindful breathing practices to their curriculum. Mayor Adams says toxic social media, constant news flashes, and unfiltered alerts are taking a toll on mental health for students. The announcement comes a month after the US Surgeon General issued a warning about the effects social media is having on kids.

Mental Health Responders Paired With Police

(Seattle, WA) -- The City of Seattle is planning a dual-dispatch program to pair police officers with mental health professionals. The dual dispatch program would start this fall. It would begin on a small scale where mental health care workers would ride with some police officers. When there’s a call involving a mental health crisis, that wouldn’t put the worker in imminent danger, the team would respond. The pilot program will cost one-and-a-half million dollars.
