The highest of civilian honors
Pair of drowning victims receive prestigious medal for heroism
(Seguin) -- Two summers ago, a pair of adults drowned in the Guadalupe River. Today, the heroic efforts of these individuals are being officially recognized with the delivery of the Carnegie Medal, a medal said to be North America’s highest civilian honor for heroism.
The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awards the Carnegie Medal to individuals from throughout the United States and Canada who risk themselves to an extraordinary degree saving or attempting to save the lives of others.
Those being honored posthumously are Victor
Villanueva and Casandra Joann Kendrick. Both drowned while saving two small children during a June 13, 2021, fishing trip at the Guadalupe River bridge on FM 1117.
Villanueva, a 30-year-old lumberyard worker from New Braunfels had taken his three sons, ages 9, 6, and 5, to fish in the Seguin River. Another group of people on the tiny island that day included Kendrick a 22-year-old retail clerk. While wading, the 9-year-old stepped into water 15 feet deep near an undertow. In an attempt to reach the boy, his brothers also entered deep
water. Villanueva swam to the boy and passed him to another woman who had responded from Kendrick’s party. That woman brought the boy to safety. Kendrick and another woman swam to the younger boys, the other woman using a child’s floatie. While one of the boys held onto the floatie, Kendrick handed the other boy to the other woman, who brought both boys to safety. However before they were able to return to shore, Villanueva and Kendrick submerged and drowned. The boys were unharmed.

Carnegie Hero Fund President Eric Zahren says both Villanueva and Kendrick are among the 16 individuals to be recognized this quarter. He says from their perspective in operating the commission, this is an exercise in examining humanity and looking at these cases where rescuers risk or lose their lives. He says they assess and recognize their mortal and moral choice that they make at that moment and only that moment alone.
"These two individuals saw that there were other lives in danger of being lost and without hesitation, they acted and they acted in a way that they put themselves in peril. So, in this case, it's not always the case, it's the same peril affecting the victim but in this case it was. There were children that were drowning. Their lives were at risk and these two individuals Mr. Villanueva and Ms. Kendrick immediately acted to put themselves at equal peril of the victims and in so doing (it), they put the victims' lives at equal importance to their own and that's that mortal choice and moral choice and in this case, it cost both of these individuals their own lives to save the young children and those young children will now hopefully live full lives but they will now live on but only because of the sacrifice of these two individuals," said Zahren.
It was in 1904 when Andrew Carnegie first wrote in the opening lines of the commission’s founding deed of trust, “We live in a heroic age. Not seldom are we thrilled by deeds of heroism where men or women are injured or lose their lives in attempting to preserve or rescue their fellows.”
To better explain the elite honor of receiving this award, it should be noted that to date, more than 10,000 medals have been awarded. That’s 10,000 recipients selected from more than 100,000 nominees over the past 119 years.
Zahren says of those 10,000 medals, only 20 percent of those medals have been awarded posthumously just as they will be for Villanueva and Kendrick.
"In the case of these two individuals, they made the ultimate sacrifice and a verse from the Gospel of John
appears on the back of every Carnegie Medal we've all heard it many times before but it states that "there is 'no greater love than to lay down a life for a friend." In these cases and all posthumous cases where a Carnegie Medal is awarded -- these heroes have taken it one step further and in many cases have acted on behalf of a stranger," said Zahren.
Zahren says the prestigious recognition comes with a medal for heroism and also a small financial grant – both will be given in this case to the next of kin. He says the medal in their view is priceless. He says it’s never been about money or a financial grant. He says it was very important to Carnegie that neither the hero nor a dependent of the hero would suffer as a result from that split-second decision by the hero to put their life at risk.
"We do three essential things. We recognize heroism, civilian heroes in the U.S. and Canada. We support those heroes and their dependents but that as importantly, we also tell these stories because it was important to our founder Andrew Carnegie and it remains very important to us till this day that these stories are told, others hear these stories, and that it may compel within others in our society to look at each other differently, to maybe act themselves in a slightly different way toward their fellow human beings and by virtue of that domino effect, if you will, change society for the better and that was Carnegie's lofty goal for the commission. It's individual focused but it really has and continues to have wider implications and goals that we continue to practice and work toward," said Zahren.
Kendrick’s father, Lee Estep, says at first, he wasn’t too sure about the organization or what they wanted to do. He says it wasn’t until after a little research that he quickly realized the significance. Meanwhile, having been a complete stranger to this family on that day, Estep says he is not surprised at all by his daughter’s heroic efforts. He says although the medal is not expected to be delivered until a couple of more months, he already has a special place for it and can’t wait to hold it in his hands.

"The other part I learned, the backside of it, is actually personalized with her name and information and stuff is on the backside of the coin. I've already gotten a little area set up where we've put the things that have been given (to us) because a lot of people have come across (over time) and have given us their condolences," said Lee.
Villanueva’s wife Norma Luna says she too was overwhelmed when she received the news. She says the Carnegie Hero Medal only solidifies what everyone already knew.
"So many emotions. We all know he was a hero. He is a hero. It brought me a lot of peace, happiness, tears, of course. Just to know that even though he is not with us anymore, he is still being honored in some way and that's never going to go away," said Luna.
Luna says not only is she grateful that her husband is being recognized but that Kendrick is also getting the recognition. She says, after all, it was her three sons that were saved on that day.
"Oh my gosh, yes! I've always expressed this to them -- till this day, you know we still keep in contact but I'm just so so thankful and grateful for her, for her family, for all them because they all had a part of it and just the way that they raised her, the kind of woman she was and how brave she was, I'm so so thankful and grateful to them and I just feel like I owe them so much," said Luna.
Luna says there’s no forgetting that day two years ago. However knowing that her husband and Kendrick will forever be remembered as national heroes, it makes things just a tad bit easier and is forever grateful to the Carnegie
Hero Fund Commission.
"I'm kind of speechless when it comes to it. It's amazing for what they do for families who are going through something we never pictured or would want to go through. It's just an honor for what they do for us and the little bit of peace that they can bring us in these type of situations and the happiness and things just like that. I just think it's amazing of what they do," said Luna.
Out of the 16 recipients being awarded this quarter from the national organization, only four are from Texas.

Maierhofer Saenz
Edward “Pete” Lee Maierhofer passed away on July 3, 2023, at the age of 73 at his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Edward Maierhofer Jr. and his mother Ruby Ella Shrank Maierhofer, and his half-brother Earl Maierhofer.
He is survived by his family, including his wife Marie Maierhofer; son Wade Maierhofer (wife Kara); daughter Wendy Garcia Jacobs; grandchildren Grayson Maierhofer, Ella Maierhofer, Tristan Garcia, Cameron Jacobs, and Kennedy Jacobs; sisters Cain Maierhofer Wyatt (husband Wayne) and Brenda Maierhofer; along with many other loving family and friends.
He was born in a small private hospital, his official name was Edward Lee Maierhofer and his dad said, “That is my little Pete”.
Elm Creek School was a small country school that only had eight grades before the students went on to Seguin High School. Pete graduated from eighth grade in 1963. This was the last year before the Elm Creek School was closed. Willie Maierhofer, Pete’s dad, played a significant part in closing the school as many kids dropped out after the 8th-grade graduation as they were not socially accepted by the Seguin students.
Pete was involved in many sports and enjoyed watching all sports. In his younger years, he was a setter for a Seguin men’s volleyball team where despite his shorter stature he was named all-tournament. He played many years of softball for the D&D team in his youth and the over 40 years old teams. Pete coached Wade and many young men in baseball for years. The team members gave him a signed baseball for his many years of Coaching.
Willie, Pete’s dad, passed away when he was a senior, which left Pete to help his mom (Ruby) raise his two sisters (Cain and Brenda) and became a responsible adult. Two days after graduation from Seguin High School, he went to work at the highway department. He also took over all his dad’s farming responsibilities that same year. He spent 30-plus years before he retired and then went back for a year to help train others in his previous job.
He was not a deer hunter but enjoyed the Wilke’s Party House which had deer hunter food and fun playing cards. All his card-playing buddies think he was the luckiest card player as he brought home his winnings all the time.
In 1995, he opened the New Berlin General Feed Store providing the area with feed, hay, and other farm products. This gave him a chance to do what he loved most, connecting with other farmers. He worked all day at the highway department and then went to work at the store.
Pete and his son Wade also have a custom hay baling service producing round and square bales for their many head of cattle.
The grandkids always gave him a hard time about his flip phone and his truck with handheld roll-down windows. No one tried to get in his truck or tractor as he always had his guard dogs with him.
His favorite gift was the freedom to watch every sport available on tv, one of the only things that kept him out of the field. He was a season ticket holder for the Seguin Matadors Football games and supported all Texas sports his entire life.
He loved spending time with his wife, friends, cows, kids, and grandchildren. This is who he was. As everyone was heading into the house for Pastor Paul to do a prayer for the family after his death, the cows at the fence by the house said “Moo” and then never made another sound.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek followed by the interment immediately following at the Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek Cemetery. All friends and family are invited to attend the reception that will follow the interment at the church hall.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the New Berlin Fire Department, 8730 FM 775, Seguin, TX 78155, or a charity of your choice.
You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
Angelina Luna Saenz was called home to the Lord on Monday June 26, 2023 at the age of 82. She was born on July 14, 1940 to Nicholas & Teresa M. Luna.
Angelina’s passion was working on her yard and taking care of numerous plants, but her main passion was caring for her family. In her earlier days, she loved to dance and continued to dance in the kitchen with her children. She had a funny sense of humor singing along to all types of music with us in the car, we will definitely miss those times. She had the biggest, kind, patient, committed, peaceful loveable heart and everyone she would meet fell in love with her. She left behind the most cherished memories. Life will just not be the same without her in our homes. She instilled in us to have faith in God in our lives and to not worry or be upset about anything just “Give It to God”, He will take care of everything. We could talk to her about difficult times in our lives and just looking at her, somehow, we felt that everything would be okay. She just had that special way about her.
She worked at Tyson, formerly known as Holly Farms for many years, retiring at the age of 63 to care for her mother. Our Mother was the most AMAZING person, and we will miss her so very much! Yes, mom you and daddy will now be amazing angels that will always be in our hearts.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Eusebio J. Saenz Sr.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Esther S. Young and husband Joe A. Young III, Yolanda Saenz, Eusebio J. Saenz Jr.; grandchildren, Joe Anthony A. Young IV, Samuel Ryan Young, Luis Joseph Ramon Jr. “Lou” and Eusebio Caiden Saenz III; 7 great grandchildren; brothers, Juan Luna and wife Augustina Luna, Jesse Luna and wife Alicia Luna, Enrique Luna and wife Carmen Luna and Luis M. Clifton “Buddy” Roland Nagel passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 73. Buddy had numerous health issues in his life’s journey, but he accepted them all with a positive, strong, and humorous attitude. Stage 4 colorectal cancer was his last challenge in life, and he did as he always did, managed it with incredible strength, courage, and humor. Cancer never got the best of him. He lived his life to the fullest every day.
Buddy was born on January 25, 1950, in Seguin, to Roland and Viola (Naumann) Nagel, given the name Clifton to honor his dad’s brother. During Buddy’s childhood, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Florida, while his dad served in the U.S. Air Force. Seguin was always his family’s home base so after his father retired from the military, the family returned to Seguin, where Buddy graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1968.
Like his father, Buddy was good with his hands. He had such big, strong hands. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build or repair with those hands. He was a skilled carpenter and artisan with a keen sense of understanding about how things worked. He was always willing to take the time to offer advice and assistance on house repairs, mechanical issues and more. He used these talents for the good of the community too. You can see and appreciate his work at The Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, the First Church, the Calaboose, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, The Guadalupe County Humane Society, The Woods Homestead, and many other locations around town.
Buddy’s knowledge and curiosity extended to many areas over the years. While living in Austin, Buddy worked in the construction field, building homes, and becoming a demolition expert. He created his own company, Nagel Construction, and took on historical home projects that extended into the Alamo Heights area. He studied Feng Shui in California and became a Feng Shui Master and advised clients in the best way to set up their homes. He was very involved in the Austin music scene as a Roadie for The Lotions and the Sound Manager for I-Tex and The Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin. He was a Master Scuba Diver and moved to Cozumel, teaching scuba diving to the many tourists who visited there. This also opened his passion for underwater photography. One summer he even traveled the country with a carnival based out of Chicago, setting up and breaking down the large rides. He built his own unique two-story home in Johnson City on the Pedernales River. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed landscaping and plants wherever he lived. He loved animals of all kinds, traveling anywhere and everywhere, was a great cook and had an extensive collection of miniature trains.
Buddy was always friendly with a great sense of humor. He had fun teasing and joking with everyone he met but especially with his beloved family, friends, doctors, nurses, and crew members. He had a curiosity about life and people that was contagious to anyone who was with him. He was a dreamer, an artist and a visionary.
In 2002, he reunited with the love of his life from his past, Jane Donegan, after being apart for almost 25 years. Buddy moved back to Seguin at that time to be with Jane and they were together until his passing. They were life partners and best friends for a total of 29 years.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Edward Sagebiel. He is survived by his love, Jane Donegan, three sisters, Ruth Sagebiel, Joan Nagel (husband, Tracy Weinberg) and Susan Nagel and his aunt Georgia Lee Naumann, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
Very special thank yous go to Larry Davis, Gail Parsons, Shantiel and Jr. Pardo, Elara Caring Hospice Care, each of Buddy’s doctors and nurses and the medical staffs at GRMC, Texas Oncology, MD Anderson, Ritchie Limb and Brace, Advanced Home Health Services and Remarkable Healthcare. Thank you for taking this final journey with us and for making it easier and with more love, comfort and kindness than we could have ever imagined.
A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to join us and share their stories and their memories of Buddy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Guadalupe County Humane Society, P. O. Box 1593, Seguin, TX 78156, the Seguin Conservation Society, P. O. Box 245, Seguin, TX 78156, or the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX 78155. These organizations were dear to Buddy’s heart.

Ohio Gov Asks Biden For Disaster Declaration Over Train Derailment
(East Palestine, OH) -- Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is asking President Biden to issue a major disaster declaration over the train derailment in East Palestine earlier this year. Monday was the deadline that FEMA set for the DeWine to make the request. In a statement, the governor said the declaration is needed to ensure that the state and federal government use “all resources available to step in and provide the community with needed assistance.” EPA and FEMA officials have been on the ground in East Palestine since the February Norfolk Southern derailment that sent toxic chemicals into the air.
Americans Gain Weight Because Of Stress
(Undated) -- Nearly half of Americans have gained around 17 pounds because of stress and believe they’ll never feel stress-free again. A study conducted by OnePoll found most are often worried about either their general health, the amount of money they make or their job. They also shared how stress affects their day-to-day life, with 57 percent of folks over 30 saying they feel stress more frequently now than they did five years ago. Close to 50 percent said they live an unhealthier life as a result of that stress. On average, people say they experience feelings of stress three days per week. Medical experts say emotional or ‘stress’ eating can cause unwanted weight gain as we turn to food for comfort without thinking about just how much we’re consuming.
NYC Health And Hospital Nurses Demand Fair Contract
(New York, NY) -- New York City Health and Hospital nurses are demanding a fair contract. Nurses at New York City’s eleven public hospitals have spent months fighting for pay parity with nurses working at the city’s private hospitals. Nurses at private hospitals went on strike earlier this year and settled their terms, but nurses at public hospitals are forbidden from striking because they’re state employees. Public sector nurses are mostly Black and brown women, and they call it a fight for health equity and racial justice.
Bobcat That Attacked Youth Camp Had Rabies
(Lyme, CT) -- A bobcat that attacked a youth camp leader and two adults in Connecticut was infected with rabies. The youth leader and the two adults were able to kill the bobcat after it attacked last Friday at Selden Neck State Park in Lyme, east of New Haven. The remains were taken to a state lab for testing, and officials confirmed yesterday that the bobcat had rabies. Officials say bobcats usually avoid human contact, and when unprovoked attacks like this happen it usually involves rabies.
