Seven tips to stay safe during the summer heat
(Seguin) -- The dog days of summer are certainly in full swing, and with the soaring temperatures, the Texas State Parks is sharing seven tips to help Texans enjoy time outdoors safely.
Last year, 47 state parks alone reported 141 heatrelated illnesses in humans and pets. Since January 1, 77 heat-related incidents have already been reported, compared to 64 reported by this time last year.
The top seven heat hacks recommended for park visitors or for anyone playing or working outdoors include:
Hydrate- It’s important to drink at least 16 ounces of water every hour in the heat to replenish your body and prevent dehydration. Don’t forget to bring enough for your four-legged family members too.
Block the Rays- Apply a generous amount of sunscreen or sunblock before heading outdoors. Be sure to reapply every couple of hours, and after swimming or sweating.
Dress Smart- Wear light, loose-fitting, breathable clothing; a hat, correct shoes, sunscreen and wet bandanas to keep you cool while in the sun. For pets, protect paws against blistering by hitting the trails during cooler times of the day when the ground isn’t hot or by putting booties on pets to help shield paws from the hot ground. Touch the pavement or ground with the back of your hand. If you cannot hold it there for five seconds, the surface is too hot for your dog’s paws.
Stay Salty- Food helps keep up energy and replace salt lost from sweating. Eating snacks such as jerky, granola, trail mix, tuna and dried fruit is a fantastic way to nourish your body while on the trails.
Buddy System- Two brains are better than one. It’s beneficial to have someone with you in hot conditions so you can look after each other on the trail. With high temperatures hitting Texas, heat-related illnesses are common and having a friend around to help recognize the early symptoms can save you from getting sick.
Plan Ahead- Study the map and have it with you, avoid relying on your phone for maps since service may be unavailable in back-country areas. Average hikers move at 2 miles per hour, so allow yourself plenty of time to avoid hiking in the heat of the day. Make sure to rest in a cool or shaded area to recover from the heat if necessary. It is also a good idea to let someone know your plan before you hit the trails and what time you should be back. That way, if you become lost, people know where to look.
Pup-Safety- Dogs are as susceptible to heat as their humans are, so it is good practice to ensure that you bring enough water and snacks for four-legged hiking buddies to last the entirety of the trip.
Officials say with heat indexes not dipping anytime soon, they advise that folks take care of themselves now and not risk heat stroke, sunburn or other serious condition.

TxDOT seeks public input on record $100 BILLION plan for projects across the state
Virtual and in-person public meetings will allow Texans to help shape TxDOT’s 2024 Unified Transportation Program
(Seguin) – As the Texas population continues to boom, TxDOT is drafting a record-breaking 10-year transportation plan and now the public is invited to weigh in on the projects proposed in their communities. Seguin and Guadalupe County residents are especially asked to chime in on the plan that has been drafted for this area in the next 10 years.
To help guide transportation projects over the next decade, TxDOT is seeking public input on the draft 2024 Unified Transportation Program (UTP), the state’s 10-year transportation plan. The draft 2024 UTP totals $100 billion, which is $15 billion more than the 2023 plan. The increase primarily comes from growth in revenues from Proposition 1 (passed in the 2015 legislative session) generated by oil and gas severance fees dedicated to highway improvements.
“The UTP is TxDOT’s road map to developing projects across the state,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “It’s important to work with our transportation partners and hear from the public to guide transportation improvements that address congestion and enhance safety.”
Projects included in the UTP will improve safety, address congestion and connectivity, and preserve roadways for Texas drivers. The UTP also addresses public transportation, maritime, aviation, rail, freight and international trade, and bicycle and pedestrian connectivity.
The public was invited to participate in virtual public meeting on Thursday. A second virtual public hearing is set for 2 p.m. July 25. The public may join the meeting and hearing by phone or online via TxDOT Public Involvement.
Meanwhile the draft’s 2024 UTP public comment period begins today and ends Monday, Aug. 7 at 4 p.m.
TxDOT officials say there are multiple ways to comment throughout the process, and they can all be found on the Public Involvement section of TxDOT. gov, along with recordings and presentations from each meeting and hearing.
The UTP is updated annually, and TxDOT works with its transportation partners to identify projects to be included. Public comments and feedback will be very important in important in developing the plan.

Maierhofer Saenz
Edward “Pete” Lee Maierhofer passed away on July 3, 2023, at the age of 73 at his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Edward Maierhofer Jr. and his mother Ruby Ella Shrank Maierhofer, and his half-brother Earl Maierhofer.
He is survived by his family, including his wife Marie Maierhofer; son Wade Maierhofer (wife Kara); daughter Wendy Garcia Jacobs; grandchildren Grayson Maierhofer, Ella Maierhofer, Tristan Garcia, Cameron Jacobs, and Kennedy Jacobs; sisters Cain Maierhofer Wyatt (husband Wayne) and Brenda Maierhofer; along with many other loving family and friends.
He was born in a small private hospital, his official name was Edward Lee Maierhofer and his dad said, “That is my little Pete”.
Elm Creek School was a small country school that only had eight grades before the students went on to Seguin High School. Pete graduated from eighth grade in 1963. This was the last year before the Elm Creek School was closed. Willie Maierhofer, Pete’s dad, played a significant part in closing the school as many kids dropped out after the 8th-grade graduation as they were not socially accepted by the Seguin students.
Pete was involved in many sports and enjoyed watching all sports. In his younger years, he was a setter for a Seguin men’s volleyball team where despite his shorter stature he was named all-tournament. He played many years of softball for the D&D team in his youth and the over 40 years old teams. Pete coached Wade and many young men in baseball for years. The team members gave him a signed baseball for his many years of Coaching.
Willie, Pete’s dad, passed away when he was a senior, which left Pete to help his mom (Ruby) raise his two sisters (Cain and Brenda) and became a responsible adult. Two days after graduation from Seguin High School, he went to work at the highway department. He also took over all his dad’s farming responsibilities that same year. He spent 30-plus years before he retired and then went back for a year to help train others in his previous job.
He was not a deer hunter but enjoyed the Wilke’s Party House which had deer hunter food and fun playing cards. All his card-playing buddies think he was the luckiest card player as he brought home his winnings all the time.
In 1995, he opened the New Berlin General Feed Store providing the area with feed, hay, and other farm products. This gave him a chance to do what he loved most, connecting with other farmers. He worked all day at the highway department and then went to work at the store.
Pete and his son Wade also have a custom hay baling service producing round and square bales for their many head of cattle.
The grandkids always gave him a hard time about his flip phone and his truck with handheld roll-down windows. No one tried to get in his truck or tractor as he always had his guard dogs with him.
His favorite gift was the freedom to watch every sport available on tv, one of the only things that kept him out of the field. He was a season ticket holder for the Seguin Matadors Football games and supported all Texas sports his entire life.
He loved spending time with his wife, friends, cows, kids, and grandchildren. This is who he was. As everyone was heading into the house for Pastor Paul to do a prayer for the family after his death, the cows at the fence by the house said “Moo” and then never made another sound.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek followed by the interment immediately following at the Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek Cemetery. All friends and family are invited to attend the reception that will follow the interment at the church hall.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the New Berlin Fire Department, 8730 FM 775, Seguin, TX 78155, or a charity of your choice.
You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
Angelina Luna Saenz was called home to the Lord on Monday June 26, 2023 at the age of 82. She was born on July 14, 1940 to Nicholas & Teresa M. Luna.
Angelina’s passion was working on her yard and taking care of numerous plants, but her main passion was caring for her family. In her earlier days, she loved to dance and continued to dance in the kitchen with her children. She had a funny sense of humor singing along to all types of music with us in the car, we will definitely miss those times. She had the biggest, kind, patient, committed, peaceful loveable heart and everyone she would meet fell in love with her. She left behind the most cherished memories. Life will just not be the same without her in our homes. She instilled in us to have faith in God in our lives and to not worry or be upset about anything just “Give It to God”, He will take care of everything. We could talk to her about difficult times in our lives and just looking at her, somehow, we felt that everything would be okay. She just had that special way about her.
She worked at Tyson, formerly known as Holly Farms for many years, retiring at the age of 63 to care for her mother. Our Mother was the most AMAZING person, and we will miss her so very much! Yes, mom you and daddy will now be amazing angels that will always be in our hearts.

Clifton “Buddy” Roland Nagel passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 73. Buddy had numerous health issues in his life’s journey, but he accepted them all with a positive, strong, and humorous attitude. Stage 4 colorectal cancer was his last challenge in life, and he did as he always did, managed it with incredible strength, courage, and humor. Cancer never got the best of him. He lived his life to the fullest every day.
Buddy was born on January 25, 1950, in Seguin, to Roland and Viola (Naumann) Nagel, given the name Clifton to honor his dad’s brother. During Buddy’s childhood, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Florida, while his dad served in the U.S. Air Force. Seguin was always his family’s home base so after his father retired from the military, the family returned to Seguin, where Buddy graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1968.
Like his father, Buddy was good with his hands. He had such big, strong hands. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build or repair with those hands. He was a skilled carpenter and artisan with a keen sense of understanding about how things worked. He was always willing to take the time to offer advice and assistance on house repairs, mechanical issues and more. He used these talents for the good of the community too. You can see and appreciate his work at The Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, the First Church, the Calaboose, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, The Guadalupe County Humane Society, The Woods Homestead, and many other locations around town.
Buddy’s knowledge and curiosity extended to many areas over the years. While living in Austin, Buddy worked in the construction field, building homes, and becoming a demolition expert. He created his own company, Nagel Construction, and took on historical home projects that extended into the Alamo Heights area. He studied Feng Shui in California and became a Feng Shui Master and advised clients in the best way to set up their homes. He was very involved in the Austin music scene as a Roadie for The Lotions and the Sound Manager for I-Tex and The Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin. He was a Master Scuba Diver and moved to Cozumel, teaching scuba diving to the many tourists who visited there. This also opened his passion for underwater photography. One summer he even traveled the country with a carnival based out of Chicago, setting up and breaking down the large rides. He built his own unique two-story home in Johnson City on the Pedernales River. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed landscaping and plants wherever he lived. He loved animals of all kinds, traveling anywhere and everywhere, was a great cook and had an extensive collection of miniature trains.
Buddy was always friendly with a great sense of humor. He had fun teasing and joking with everyone he met but especially with his beloved family, friends, doctors, nurses, and crew members. He had a curiosity about life and people that was contagious to anyone who was with him. He was a dreamer, an artist and a visionary.
In 2002, he reunited with the love of his life from his past, Jane Donegan, after being apart for almost 25 years. Buddy moved back to Seguin at that time to be with Jane and they were together until his passing. They were life partners and best friends for a total of 29 years.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Edward Sagebiel. He is survived by his love, Jane Donegan, three sisters, Ruth Sagebiel, Joan Nagel (husband, Tracy Weinberg) and Susan Nagel and his aunt Georgia Lee Naumann, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
Very special thank yous go to Larry Davis, Gail Parsons, Shantiel and Jr. Pardo, Elara Caring Hospice Care, each of Buddy’s doctors and nurses and the medical staffs at GRMC, Texas Oncology, MD Anderson, Ritchie Limb and Brace, Advanced Home Health Services and Remarkable Healthcare. Thank you for taking this final journey with us and for making it easier and with more love, comfort and kindness than we could have ever imagined.
A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to join us and share their stories and their memories of Buddy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Guadalupe County Humane Society, P. O. Box 1593, Seguin, TX 78156, the Seguin Conservation Society, P. O. Box 245, Seguin, TX 78156, or the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX 78155. These organizations were dear to Buddy’s heart.

The Defense Suicide Prevention Office says 94 service members took their own lives, up from 75 the year before. It’s the most suicides in a quarter since the second quarter of 2021 when 97 killed themselves. NBC News: Tests Confirm Substance Found At WH Is Cocaine
(Washington, DC) -- Formal lab tests are confirming cocaine was found at the White House. NBC News reports it was found in a common area of the West Wing and the Secret Service is conducting an investigation to try and determine who brought it in. The small, dime-sized bag was found by Secret Service Sunday night while President Biden and his family were away at Camp David for the holiday weekend. The discovery led to a brief evacuation of the White House.
Council To Hold Hearing Over Adams Response To Wildfire Smoke
(New York, NY) -- The New York City Council is looking into the response by Mayor Eric Adams and his administration to the Canadian wildfire smoke. The Council set a hearing on the matter for next Wednesday. Some lawmakers have criticized the Adams’ administration for being too slow to respond when the air became unhealthy on June 6th. A spokesperson for the administration says the city mounted a whole-of-government response to keep New Yorkers informed and protected during the smoke event.
Toxic Algae Poisons Sea Mammals
(San Diego, CA) -- Toxic algae is poisoning sea life across the San Diego coastline. It’s called domoic acid. It’s a naturally occurring neurotoxin that’s produced by algae blooms. This is consumed by shellfish and anchovies, that are in turn consumed by sea lions and dolphins. Then the domoic acid builds up in the sea mammals’ brains, causing them to become confused and disoriented. Sea World of San Diego says that most of the animals can be treated. Unfortunately, once the domoic acid levels get past a certain point in their brains, humanely euthanizing them is the only option.

Ask the Master GARDENERS
Q: I have a mature live oak that did not produce leaves last summer. As it was mature, I wasn’t watering it, despite the heat. This year, it’s sprouting from the trunk. Should I cut it down, or top it out?
A: First of all, why didn’t it produce leaves? Oak Wilt, stress from cold, stress from lack of water, herbicide—any of these could be a cause. I think you should probably contact an arborist to come out and look at your tree. Your local extension office should be able to help you find one.
The Austintexas.gov site has a Tree Care pdf that lists signs of stress. These include leaves that are scorched, wilting, unusual colors, prematurely shedding or turning brown without falling. Twigs and branches that are dying might indicate root problems and overall tree decline. Cut or damaged roots. Mushrooms around the base of tree. Signs of internal decay on large trees or limbs should be inspected by a certified arborist for risk (such as cavity openings, nesting holes, mushrooms, carpenter ants, termites and missing wood).
As for the water question, wildflower.org thinks that even mature trees need water infrequently. A young new tree needs water at least twice a week. This is effective because the roots are close to the trunk. As the tree matures, the roots go farther out. A mature oak will have roots at least two to three times the circumference of height of the tree. This will be beyond the shade line
or dripline of the tree. Wildflower suggests a sprinkler moved from place to place around the root area.
On small trees I have had good luck cutting off dead wood and choosing one of the sprouts as a new leader. But your tree sounds awfully large for you to use this technique. Again, I suggest you have an arborist come on site, look, and tell you what to do.
Q: My friend tells me that she starts her fall tomatoes, squash, and pumpkins in July. Why so early? And why should I want a fall garden?
A: Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac says that the quality of fall crops is much higher with less chance of bitter taste developing. Also, rainfall is more frequent in the fall. Insect pest populations are on the decline, and the weather is more pleasant for you (at least we will hope so this year). Fall gardening takes a few math skills. You need to check your seed packets because some plants take two months from seed to the beginning of harvest, and others take three months. Your warm season crops will be killed by the first fall frost. So look at last year’s first frost and count back three months to know when to plant. My first freeze last year was December 23 but who knows what this year’s will be. When Welsh wrote his book, the first frost date for San Antonio was November 28 (so we would have planted August 28). My suggestion for a small garden is not to plant from seed, but to put in small plants from the nursery.
Clara Mae Marcotte is a Texas Master Gardener with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. If you have a question to be answered, call the Master Gardeners at 830-379-1972 or leave a message to be answered. The website is guadalupecountymastergardeners.org. The Master Gardener research library is open Wednesdays from 1 to 4, at 210 East Live Oak Street in Seguin.
