Man files for city of Seguin mayor

By o you ht T g u ro

The Voice of Seguin Today

Coming home to Texas

Herrera, a native of El Paso, believes many of his visions for Seguin come from those successes seen not only in his hometown but in neighboring cities like San Antonio. He says whether it be the transformation and renovation of the Pearl Brewery in San Antonio or the total transformation of El Paso’s neighborhoods and downtown, he believes the time has come for real change in Seguin.

Frank L. Herrera By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- A local man wants to be the next mayor for the city of Seguin. Francisco “Frank” L. Herrera is the latest candidate to toss his name in the hat for the city-wide position. Herrera’s name will appear on the ballot during the Tuesday, November 3 general election. Herrera, who moved to Seguin from San Marcos five years ago, says his time in the city has allowed him to experience and develop new visions for the city’s future. “I want to get involved with the community. One, I find that the people here are friendly and I see that the downtown, the center part, the heart of Seguin is being left behind and I want to, as the mayor, focus on our center point and then move outward as far as bringing renovation and then also bring about the economic pulse of Seguin and make it stronger,” said Herrera.

“I would be very actively involved not only with the downtown area but also in order to make the economic pulse of Seguin strong is that if we do bring in or develop new businesses or industries here, that they have to hire Seguin or if they need other towns, we are strongly suggesting that they live here in Seguin. That way, we can develop our revenue streams and I have some ideas as to what kind of manufacturing that I would like here and this is going to be very crucial, become very firm as to what my ideas are. I would like to develop some consumer goods types of manufacturing but I would also like to develop some drone technology and develop it into larger drones that can eventually transport freight,” said Herrera. Herrera, who is retired, says he brings to the campaign -- experience in planning as well as his interdisciplinary degree which includes sociology and political science. Herrera will face former Seguin City Councilwoman Donna Dodgen who has also filed for a place on the ballot. The deadline to file for the mayor’s race or for one of the four other available council seats is 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17. Individuals interested in running for one of the positions in the city of Seguin are encouraged to pick up an application packet at Seguin City Hall.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is doing its part to ensure that all accommodations remain the same for local families who will still be in need of afterschool care for their students in the Seguin ISD. Registration began this week for the city’s JAAM Afterschool Adventures For Me Program. Erica Taft, the new assistant director of parks and recreation, says despite all the changes that will be in place at the various local schools, the city wanted to ensure that parents did not have to worry

about their children at the end of the day.

“We are excited to offer our afterschool program at all of our seven elementary schools and the program happens after the afterschool dismissal until 6 p.m. The class is $30 per week to signup. It includes a $25 registration fee and the fee for one week of camp and the kids go do a variety of activities, they have a daily snack, they also have time to do homework and some activities, some arts and crafts, some sports and a bunch of fun stuff,” said Taft. Taft says of course, all the safety guidelines will be enforced for

all those participating. She says safety will be key to ensuring a safe and successful program.

social distancing. Our staff has been trained in how to disinfect. We will be disinfecting regularly and at the end of the day, everything used or touched. We are working with the school staff to figure out how the restrooms specifically are going to sanitized after our use. We know the school district will help us. We are going to put kids in smaller groups this year than as we have in the past and we will keep them with their same staff so there’s a variety of safety measures,” said Taft.

“We met with the school district and they’ll be taking temperatures so we won’t take temperatures again. We’ll make sure that kids are wearing their mask and

Due to limits on group sizes and other social distancing efforts, Taft warns that the program

will be limited in space and encourages parents to sign up their kids as soon as possible. “We are strict with the numbers of what we typically see so if afterschool care is a need that you have, I encourage you to register,” said Taft. Registration is available at the park’s office Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office is located at Max Starcke Park West. Again, a $25 registration fee and fee for the first week forz each student will be collected. Cost is $30 per week.

Navarro ISD reports latest COVID-19 update By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD is now reporting a total of five positive COVID-19 tests within the district. The district which initially announced its first positive case on Monday followed up Wednesday by adding four additional cases. As of today, the district is reporting four students and one staff member who have all tested positive. The district shared the news Monday via social media. The statement providing details on the latest case reads, “we have had a high school extra-curricular student test positive for COVID-19. The student

is quarantined, and all safety procedures are in place. The student was last on campus on Saturday, August 8. All extra-curricular areas used by the student have been sanitized with hospital grade cleaners in accordance with our disinfecting plan.” District officials say they encourage parents and students to be “vigilant and active” with screening for COVID-19 symptoms over the next 14 days. The case comes a few days before the district is set to launch both a remote learning and face to face learning environment for its students. The first day of school for the Navarro ISD is We d n e s d a y, A u g . 1 9 .

Navarro volleyball opens season with 2-1 week

(Geronimo) - Navarro volleyball fans observed social distancing rules and cheered through face coverings this week as the Panthers opened Bernice Voigt’s first season as head coach with two wins in three matches. Navarro swept Bandera 3-0 (25-7, 25-27, 25-13) and came up short to San AntonioCornerstone in four sets on Tuesday at the Navarro Events Center in Geronimo.

“The positives - passing, serving, we can hit when we run our plays and stuff, and things like that, so we’re getting there,” Voigt said. “The negative was our blocking, and we kind of broke down on serve receive in the last match a little bit, so we’ll continue to work on that.”

Navarro bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to sweep San Antonio-Davenport 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-23) on the road Wednesday evening. Williams and Madison McCaig led the attack up front with eight kills and two blocks apiece. Kyndal Tate came up with a solo block. Benner distributed 13 assists. Brumley collected 17 digs. Gosch, Berklee Andrews, and Kaitlin Menchaca each sent one ace over the net.

After dropping the first set to Cornerstone 25-20, the Panthers built a 23-18 lead in the second and had the Warriors at game point, 24-21.

Voigt says the players’ acclimation process to her system and coaching still is still a work in progress.

Cornerstone rallied with four straight points and a 7-2 run to claim a 28-26 win and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Navarro staved off elimination with a 2516 win in the third set, but the momentum didn’t carry into the fourth as the Warriors closed it out by a commanding 25-12 final.

“I’ve made a few changes, and we’ve changed some defensive things and stuff like that,” the coach said. “So they’re having to make some adjustments, and you still see them kind of cheating back to do some of the defense they played last year, but it’s going to come around, and I think that’s why we get caught sometimes.”

Elizabeth Williams put away seven total kills Tuesday night. Sara Benner set for 14 assists. Nelly Brumley paced the defensive effort with 14 digs. Williams and Ashley Gosch delivered two aces apiece against Bandera. Voigt identified both encourage trends and teachable moments in the Panthers’ first regular season matches.

SPORTS Houston Texans sign Marion volleyball survives intense Seguin native P.J. Hall season opener The 25-year old Hall has agreed to sign with with the Houston Texans, as announced Thursday morning by his agency, Enter Sports Management. Hall was a second-round pick in coach Jon Gruden’s first draft back with the Raiders in 2018, selected 57th overall out of Sam Houston State. The 6-foot, 305-pound Hall played mostly as a reserve as a rookie and then started 12 games last season. Hall recorded 1.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, and 48 tackles in 18 starts over the course of 30 games for the Raiders. Over his college career at Sam Houston State, Hall logged an FCS-record 86.5 tackles for loss and broke school records for sacks (42) and blocked kicks (14) while garnering AllLSC and All-America accolades.

Former Matador star P.J. Hall is headed back to the Lone Star State to continue his pro football career after agreeing to a deal with the Texans on Thursday. (AP File Photo, Eric Risberg)

Hall was an All-District defensive end and running-back for the Seguin Matadors during a varsity career that spanned from 2010-2012, and redshirted a year at Sam Houston State after graduating from SHS in 2013.

(Houston) - The NFL future of former Seguin High School standout P.J. Hall was cloudy last week when the Las Vegas Raiders cut him after a rescinded trade to the Vikings due to a failed physical, but the third-year defensive tackle now has a chance to hit the “reset” button in his home state.

The Texans lost veteran defensive lineman D.J. Reader to free agency. Hall will have a chance to compete with rookie second-round draft pick Ross Blacklock to replace Reader in the Houston lineup as training camp continues. The terms of Hall’s contract have not been released.

(Marion) - Melissa Mitchell’s first season as Marion High School’s head volleyball coach opened with a thrilling 3-2 home win over Poteet on Tuesday. The Bulldogs won the first set 25-20, dropped the second 25-21, took a 2-1 lead with a 25-17 win in the third, and came short in the fourth as Poteet bounced back with a 25-14 win. Marion emerged from the tightly contested fifth and deciding set with a 15-13 triumph. The Bulldogs head to Wimberley Friday morning for a dual match with the Texans and Stephenville. The first match starts at 9 a.m.

Trump Again Pushes For Safe Reopening Of Schools Florida Sheriff Bans Masks For Deputies (Washington, DC) -- President Trump is again calling for the safe reopening of schools. During a briefing, Trump noted mitigation efforts and health protocols to protect students and teachers can make it possible. He reiterated children are at a lower risk of serious illness or death from the coronavirus. Trump has been pushing for students to return to class for weeks despite COVID-19 concerns. He said staying home can harm a child’s well-being.

(Marion County, FL) -- In a time when more cities are making masks mandatory, one sheriff in Florida is doing the opposite. Billy Woods of Marion County just banned masks for his deputies. He told them to stop covering up, except in locations like hospitals and the courthouse. This also applies to deputies working special events. Woods says for all the experts who argue for a mask, he can find just as many against it. This comes as hotspot Florida added another 81-hundred coronavirus cases and 213 deaths Wednesday.

RI Gov Delays Start Of School By Two Weeks

Big East The Latest To Put Off Fall Sports

(Providence, RI) -- Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo is postponing the start of the school year by two weeks. She says she hopes the extra time allows school districts the necessary time to prepare for a safe reopening. Raimondo plans to announce whether schools will offer in-person instruction or a hybrid model the week of August 31st.

(Undated) -- Another college conference is putting off fall sports this year because of coronavirus concerns. The Big East announced it is postponing athletics and will look into playing the impacted sports in the spring. The move pushes back soccer, cross country, volleyball and field hockey. Some of the schools include the University of Connecticut, Butler, Creighton and Villanova.

Nash John McElyea Nash, III passed away August 8, 2020 at the age of 70 in Seguin, Texas. John is survived by his loving wife of 37 glorious years, Teri MyCue Nash; his children John Nash, IV and wife, Laura; Amy Nash Dahlke and husband, Robert; Andy Nash and wife, Rebecca; Amanda Nash Robbins and husband, Bailey; grandchildren Emily and Tilden Nash; Jacob and Jade Dahlke; Casen, Whitley, and Elliot Grace Nash; and Baby Robbins expected in February. He was also survived by his sisters Naomi Nash Drummond and husband, Chuck; Martha Nash Bartlett and husband, Marty; sister-inlaw, Karen Gordon; step-mother, Connie Naugher Nash; Sue Hodges and husband, A. G., mother of John and Amy; sisters-in-law Judy Johnson and Merry Douberly and husband, Ed; brothers-in-law Jerry MyCue and wife, Carol; Scotty MyCue and wife, Jacque; numerous nieces and nephews; loving family members, and a plethora of loving friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Polly Nash, sister Polly Anne Nash, his brother Kenneth Andrew Nash, inlaws Roger and Arline MyCue; brothers-in-law Jimmie Johnson and Dick MyCue. John was born on August 17, 1949 in Berkeley, California to John Nash, Jr. and Pauline Fawcus Nash. The family relocated to St. Louis, Missouri in the early 1960’s fueling John with a love for baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals. He later graduated from Lindbergh High School in 1967 and began classes at Central Methodist College. This is when John realized that school was getting in the way of his education and as he explained it, “I was working at the

restaurant too much to go to class. I was a terrible student.” Perkins Pancake House in the St. Louis area, as well as the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Medic, kept him busy until 1978 when he moved to the Seguin area to help his parents manage the Greenery Station Restaurant off of State Highway 123. John didn’t like things not done so he finished college as a well-seasoned, non-traditional student in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree from Texas Lutheran University. Through the years, John kept his community fed by owning and operating several other restaurants in the Seguin area: Depot Cafe, River Shadows, Walnut Creek Diner, and Johnny Mac’s Bar and Grill. His ability to mentor the young minds is something that always seems to come up in conversation when speaking to others about John Nash. He loved telling stories, fishing and hunting with his family, managing his longhorns, talking to friends, and talking to strangers that would often become friends.

John based his life on his faith, his family, and his friends. To quote John Wayne, his hero, “I’ve tried to live my life so that my family would love me and my friends respect me. The others can do whatever the hell they please.” That was you, John Nash. You were an icon to many. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to First United Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin, Seguin, Texas or the Geronimo Lions Club Scholarship Fund, 135 Oak Springs Drive, Seguin, Texas, 78155. You are encouraged to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Priestly Ora Lee Priestly of Seguin passed away at the age of 99 at Silvertree Nursing Home in Schertz Texas.

It was known throughout that you better have some spare time if you ran into John. He loved family vacations to Angel Fire, NM, Lake Amistad in Del Rio, TX, and the Texas coast. He often bragged about his kids and grandkids as “champions--every one of them.” To fulfill his faith, he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Seguin, serving as chief lawn man. To support his community, he was involved in the Geronimo Lions Club serving many offices (including the Lion King) as well as managing the First Friday Feasts each month. To continue his patriotic duty, he served as a boat captain at the annual Warriors’ Weekend in Port O’Connor, TX. John’s cremated remains will be enniched, in a private service, in the Columbarium at Knolle Chapel of First United Methodist Church in Seguin with the Rev. Cathe Evins officiating. A public celebration of his life is being planned at a later date.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Josephine (Marion) Dolford of Schertz, TX; Erma Galimore of Cibolo, TX; 2 sons: Charles and Howard Priestly of Seguin; 1 Daughter in love: Estelle Priestly of Converse, TX; 3 sisters; Ethel Luckey, Dorothy Luckey and Geraldine Stewart, and 22 Grandchildren.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions a private service will be held Aug. 13, 2020 at 10 AM at Meadowlawn Funeral Home. 5611 E. Houston St. San Antonio,TX 78220.
