Stay safe, stay sober behind the wheel

(San Antonio) -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) is projecting that drunk driving deaths could surge by as much as 40 percent this Labor Day weekend. MADD officials say the stat is based on the most recent data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

MADD State Program Manager Emma Dugas says they want to remind everyone that they can choose to not drink and drive.

“Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest times of travel in the year. We want to educate the public to stay safe and to plan ahead. Usually with holidays, there’s always celebrations and gatherings as well, and a lot of alcohol is served at these gatherings. We encourage the public to plan ahead for a safe ride home and always use a nondrinking driver -- and not the person that has drank the least amount of alcohol. Any amount of alcohol in your system, can impair you. We

want everyone to get home safe,” said Dugas. Dugas says there are several steps that people can take to make sure that they don’t drink and drive. She says it all starts with having a plan before you ever leave the house.

“When you do go out to gatherings or you have a party, one of the main things is...that you have that plan in place. Whether it’s a significant other or a friend that’s going to not drink, and that can get you home safe; Sober, pg. 3

New Berlin hosts annual Sausage Festival on Labor Day weekend

(New Berlin) -- A Labor Day weekend tradition returns to New Berrlin on Sunday. The New Berlin Sausage Festival has been a big community event for decades, dating back to the 1950’s.

Volunteer Rachael Howell says there will be music, fun and -- of course -- lots of homemade sausage.

“We are one of the only ones that still make our sausage from scratch. It’s all about the German-homestyle sausage that we make. We’ve made that for 72 years. We also have homemade fixings to go along with the sausage plates. That includes applesauce, potato salad, sauerkraut, pickled onions and a slice of bread,” said Howell.

Howell says there will be plenty for folks to enjoy. She says the Sausage Festival offers something for all ages.

“It’s free to come out. If you want

to get a drink or have a beer, we will have beer available. Those tickets run about $3 a ticket. The sausage plate is $15, and it is a very large plate of food. We also have sausageon-a-stick and sausage sandwiches available in the evening -- starting around 4:00. There’s other things to buy too. We have cakes and pies and other desserts, and we have things at the Country Store -- like homemade items, breads, cakes, jams and jellies. So, it’s free to come walk around the grounds. The games for the kids are all under one dollar,” said Howell. The money raised stays in the community. Howell says it all supports two important operations there in New Berlin.

“The New Berlin Community Club and the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department both split the proceeds from this event. The New

Berlin Community Club offers scholarships for local students from Marion and La Vernia. They also maintain the historical building, that the Community Club is a part of -with the money that they receive from the event. For the fire department, it’s a large percentage of their budget for the year. As everyone knows, gas, including diesel is going up. Most of our vehicles run on diesel. So gas is one of our largest expenses. And then every so many years, you have to update the equipment for the fire department. Every time you update it, you have to buy a new one, and currently every thing is rising in costs. To replace something that was, like $100 two years ago or three years ago; it now costs $400 to $500. And that’s just basic equipment, like boots or a fire jacket or any of those things,” said Howell.

Sausage, continued.

The New Berlin Sausage Festival opens at 11 a.m. Sunday at the New Berlin Community Center, located at 8815 FM 775. Bingo runs from 12:30 to 4 p.m.,

the silent auction runs from 11 .m. to 4 p.m., the live auction starts at 5 p.m., and the Country Store, games and raffles will be available throughout the day. The free dance, featuring Clint Taft & The Buckwild Band begins at 7:30 p.m.

or if you’re going to a friend’s house, make plans to maybe stay the night. Maybe you didn’t plan on drinking and then you ended up drinking -- then you (still) need to make that plan. Instead of getting behind the wheel, get a rideshare to get home, or ask the host if you can stay the night. We encourage people who are hosting gatherings to take that responsibility to make sure that all your guests get home safe or have them stay,” said Dugas.

Many people will be celebrating Labor Day this weekend, and many of them will drink and then get behind the wheel. Dugas says that’a bad idea. She says even if you’ve only had a couple of drinks, you should not be driving.

“So many factors go into play when it comes to alcohol. How much you drank, how much you ate that day, how much weigh -- there’s so many factors that come into play. The only safe way to get home safely, is to have that designated driver,” said Dugas.

It’s no secret that drinking and driving is not only a bad idea, but it’s also against the law. Yet too many people continue to do it, and that number is expected to go up this Labor Day weekend. Dugas says it’s frustrating that people don’t heed their warnings, but she says they feel like it’s important to keep sharing this message, because that’s one of the big ways to begin to change the culture of drinking and driving.

“Alcohol is prevalent. It’s everywhere. It is one of the most advertised drugs on the market. Everyone sees

it, and it’s in almost every home. Even though we know it’s against the law to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol -- alcohol is just so normalized (that people still do it). As an adult growing up in that type of culture where it is normal, it can be perceived as ‘I’m okay, I’ll be alright getting home,”’ said Dugas.

She says just because you’ve not been caught in the past, it doesn’t mean that you should continue to drink and drive.

“The average drunk driver will drive over 80 times before they are caught for the first time. So if they go home safe those 80 times before, you almost feel like you’re invincible,” said Dugas.

MADD’s Labor Day weekend warning comes on top of some other troubling statistics, including a 27 percent year-round increase in deaths caused by drunk driving since 2018, with someone in the U.S. now killed or injured in a drunk driving crash every 79 seconds. In 2021, 1,134 people in Texas were killed and 2,565 seriously injured due to drunk driving.

MADD is working with law enforcement agencies across the state to try to reverse this trend. Several agencies are beefing up their patrols of Texas highways and roadways this weekend in an attempt to stop people from drinking and driving.

MADD officials say if you, or someone you love, has been the victim of impaired driving, support is available at no cost 24 hours a day via the MADD Victim Help Line 1-877-MADD-HELP (1-877-6233435) or www.MADD.org.

SUWANEE, GA -- Texas Lutheran women’s soccer was selected to finish second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) following a poll of the Conference’s head coaches, it was announced on Wednesday.

Texas Lutheran garnered 52 votes to tie with Southwestern for second place and only trail Trinity, the defending SCAC Champions who made it all the way to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament last season and garnered all eight first place votes and 64 points. The second place finish is the highest preseason selection for TLU since they were picked second in 2018.

After the Tigers, Bulldogs, and Pirates, Schreiner followed in fourth place with 36 points and St. Thomas rounding out the top five with 31 points.

Dallas was slated to finish sixth after earning

27 points, followed by Centenary (14) and Austin College (12) to round out the poll.

Texas Lutheran went 11-8-2 overall in 2022, including 11-3 to finish second in the SCAC in both the regular season and conference tournament. The 11 conference wins from the

2022 team set a new program record for most conference wins - surpassing the previous record of 10 which was met in 2004 and 2006 while members of the American Southwest Conference.

Texas Lutheran will open the 2023 season on Friday, September 1 as they visit Schreiner in nonconference action for a 2 PM kickoff. The Bulldogs will then return home for the home opener on Sunday, September 3 against East Texas Baptist at 1 PM.

On March 21,1968 in Seguin, TX a beautiful baby girl was born to Earl Sr. and Dorothy Moseley, whom they lovingly named Lelah Claire. Lelah was the youngest of four children and only daughter.

Lelah was a joy, a bright light whose infectious smile endeared her to family and friends alike. She was baptized at a young age and was active in her home church, Second Baptist Church of Seguin, TX where she attended Sunday School and sang in the junior choir. She attended Seguin ISD schools from kindergarten to graduation. As an honor graduate at Seguin High School, Lelah received a scholarship to Prairie View A & M University, through the Benjamin Banneker honors program. After graduating from Prairie View A & M University in 1990 Lelah married Rodman Goode and to this union one son was born, Brannon Frazier Goode.

Lelah was smart, creative, inquisitive, and continued her education at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving a Master of Education in 1995. She furthered her quest for learning by enrolling in the PhD program in Education at the University of Denver, while working as a Special Education Coordinator in Colorado Springs, CO. Lelah had many professional connections in TX and held many teaching and administrative roles in Seguin ISD and Hutto ISD. She was also a Special Education Coordinator at Education Service Center Region 20 and held bilingual and dispute resolution certifications.

Lelah combined her love of travel and teaching and accepted a position as the Special Education Coordinator at The American School in Paris, France for a year. In addition to travel, she was an avid reader and a huge Harry Potter fan. Lelah followed her passion for makeup and worked as a makeup artist on the set of a feature film in Austin. She loved learning new languages, and was self-taught in Spanish, French and Portuguese.

Along this journey, Lelah met and fell in love with Natalie Haywood, whom she married on March 10, 2012, and renewed their vows again on July 2, 2015. Natalie and Lelah remained deeply committed in love until Lelah drew her last breath on August 20, 2023.

Lelah’s compassionate nature and personality left a positive influence on those with whom she came in contact. In addition, her kindness, and her way of making others feel valued leaves a lasting legacy for us to emulate.

Lelah was preceded in death by her parents Earl Moseley Sr., Dorothy Friday Moseley, brothers Timothy Moseley and Earl Moseley, Jr. She loved her family and is survived by her wife Natalie Haywood (Bulverde, TX), son Brannon Goode (Arlington, TX), brother Clarence Moseley (Austin, TX), nephew Jeremy Richmond (Houston, TX), brothers in law David Haywood (Houston TX), Michael Obershan (Austin, TX), aunt Norma Chappell (Torrance, CA), cousins Malissa Johnston Williams, W.C. COVID-19 Hospitalizations See Surge

(Atlanta, GA) -- COVID-19 Hospitalizations are up by another 19-percent. According to the CDC, deaths also saw a large jump by 21-percent in one week. More than half of US states saw a “substantial” jump. South Dakota had the biggest spike, with hospitalizations surging more than 127-percent in one week. A new booster shot targeting the newest strain of the omicron variant is on its way, but isn’t expected to be approved until the end of September.

Ramaswamy Floats Physical Fitness Test For SAT

(Washington, DC) -- Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy suggests the SAT should include a physical fitness section. The entrepreneur floated the idea in a social media post as a pro-merit solution after the Supreme Court effectively ended affirmative action in college admissions. He said the test could consist of a one-mile run, pull-ups, sit-ups and a shuttle run. He added it would help address a growing mental health crisis in the U.S.

Study: Air Pollution The “Greatest External Threat To Public Health” (Chicago, IL) -- A new study says air pollution is the “greatest external threat to public health.” The annual Air Quality Life Index from the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago found air pollution to be a bigger threat to a person’s health than smoking or alcohol. The study says the average person’s life expectancy would increase by two-point-three years if pollutants were permanently reduced to meet the World Health Organization’s guideline limit. According to the report, air pollution’s impact on life expectancy is three times greater than alcohol use. The study noted that legislation like the Clean Air Act has helped the U.S. reduce pollution by nearly 65-percent since 1970, helping add just under oneand-a-half years to Americans’ life expectancy.

Study: More Dog Owners Hesitant About Vaccines, Including Rabies

(Washington, DC) -- A new study says the majority of dog owners are skeptical of vaccines, including the rabies shot. Published in the medical journal Vaccine, it finds that 53-percent of dog owners have concerns about the safety or necessity of vaccines for their four-legged friends. More than a third also believed vaccines could cause “cognitive issues” in dogs leading to autism-a theory that has no scientific evidence. The study says hesitancy to vaccinate dogs is an issue because without them, disease could spread through both canine and human populations.
