(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD has taken action to comply with a new state law in hopes of making local schools safer. Among those options now avaible is the Guardian Program, which will allow certified teachers and/or other district employees to carry guns for added protection during school hours.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer

for the Seguin ISD says this being considered because the district does not currently have enough armed officers at each of their campuses to comply with the unfunded new state mandate.

“Under this new house bill, this new approved law, by Sept. 1, we have to have somebody on each school campus,” said Hoffmann.

Seguin ISD to phase in clear backpacks at elementary school

(Seguin) -- Last month’s incident in which a student discharged a loaded gun while on a school bus has prompted the Seguin ISD to consider even more security measures.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez says the first change will occur at the elementary school level.

“As I mentioned during a news conference we hosted that afternoon, I have discussed the idea of expanding our clear backpack policy with my administrative team. Moving forward, we are phasing in a clear backpack policy for our elementary school students. Parents who wish to purchase a clear backpack for their elementary students are encouraged to do so. We are in the process of ordering clear backpacks to provide to those families who may be experiencing financial hardships. We realize that it will take time to phase in this new policy, especially since we have already started the school year. The expectation is that all of

our elementary and prekindergarten students who use a backpack will have a clear one by the start of the second semester in January,” said Gutierrez.

“Information will be sent to parents on this new policy along with details on how the district will distribute clear backpacks to our elementary school students.”

Dr. Gutierrez says he believes a clear backpack is yet another tool in helping to keep kids safe. In the incident involving the school bus

at Jefferson Avenue Elementary School, it was reported that the young student had brought the loaded weapon from home in his backpack.

Kids at the district’s middle and high school campuses were already required to have clear backpacks. That rule went into effect two years ago at all secondary schools. The new change will mean that elementary school students will also have to make the switch later this year.

Lions Club selling pork steak plates at its Fall Fling

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Noon Lions Club wants to fill up your belly during its Fall Fling Thursday night at Silver Center. The fundraiser is held twice a year, once in the spring and then again in the fall.

Lions club member Mike Wilson says the Fall Fling

helps them raise the money, that the club uses to give back to the community.

"It's our semiannual event that we are having now. We are looking forward to serving the community again the wonderful pork steak dinner that has become so popular. We have achieved so

much success, and we owe the community so much appreciation for the support that they've given us in attending and purchasing these meals. It's help us do the things that Lions do for the community -- and that is serve," said Wilson. Fall, pg. 3

Armed, continued.

Hoffmann says the Guardian program is a direct response to the district needing to adhere to this new mandate for armed personnel on all campuses. Without receiving any additional dollars from the state, this is the least expensive way to comply with the new law.

“That measure allowed us because we can’t hire and don’t have available law enforcement officers to be on campus to meet the measure of that House Bill, we are able to do an alternative program that will allow us to do a Guardian Program or a Marshal Program in those schools. That can essentially be an employee who is on campus

Fall, continued.

Unlike the Spring Fling, the fall version of fundraiser is a scaled back event. Lion Pat Sagebiel says there will not be a raffle or any other activities for the Fall Fling. He says the popular pork steak dinner will be the star of the show.

"We put the emphasis on the number one seller, which is the pork steak dinner. I know in talking to people (how popular it is). They say 'I've been you, because you normally do it twice a year and I just can't wait, so what day is it and how much?' It's the same cost and the same place, the same time, and (you can again) drivethru," said Sagebiel.

Club member Bill Klingemann says the pork steaks will again be prepared by Next Door Catering. He says the drive-thru line will make it quick and easy for people to pick up their plates. Kingemann says they expect to sell dozens of these plates, because people can't get enough of these pork steak dinners.

"Troy and Nancy Brown, (of Next Door Catering), put together these delicious pork steaks, with a nice barbecue sauce on top of it, along with the potatoes that you just have to taste to appreciate how good they are, and there are the green beans. I don't even like green beans, but I eat those green beans like crazy," said Klingemann.

Wilson says the Noon Lions Club uses the proceeds from the sale to help support its KidsSight program. The program allows the club to conduct eye screenings on young students in local schools and daycare centers. Wilson says they started several years ago just screening kids at the Seguin

who goes to the proper training and protocols and will be allowed to carry a handgun in the school in order to meet and fulfill the spirit of that new law,” said Hoffmann. Both Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez and Seguin Police Chief Jason Brady recently discussed the challenges the district faced in finding an armed officer for all 13 Seguin ISD campuses. Chief Brady says the law presents a challenge for law enforcement and school districts alike.

Hoffmann says upon implementing a Guardian Program, the district will provide the proper messaging at each of its schools as well as to each of its families. The new law officially started on Friday, September 1.

ISD's Ball Early Childhood Center. He says they now take their testing equipment to other schools all across the area. The idea is to screen these kids at an early age to determine if there is a potential problem, which would require them to seek an actual diagnosis from a medical professional. By doing this, they can help to catch vision problems before the condition worsens. Nearly a quarter of the students they screen are referred to a doctor for further testing. Wilson says KidSight is making a difference for kids in this area.

"The program has grown. We are doing well over 2,000 a year in the area -- between the public schools with the Seguin ISD and the Navarro ISD, plus the Kindergartens and the daycares and the other events where

we can pick up a few kids and do some screening. Right now we have scheduled most of the schools, so that we are going to be doing that throughout the month of September. (We will) be getting those kids identified and treated as quickly as possible. Then we will move on to some other sources of opportunity to get those kids screened," said Wilson.

Tickets for the pork steak dinners are $15 pre-sale, or $20 if you wait to get them at the door. Again, it is a drive-thru only event. The plates will be available for pickup from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Silver Center, located at 510 E. Court St. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Silver Center, Starcke Furniture, Ascot's Custom Travel and at Tri-County AC & Heating.

Study: Screen Time Is Linked To Developmental Delays In Kids

(Japan) -- Too much screen time is being linked to developmental delays in children. That’s according to a new study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. Researchers looked at data from seven-thousand kids and found that two or more hours of screen time increased the likelihood of developmental delays, especially in problem-solving and communication. In infants, screen time was linked to developmental delays in social skills and motor skills. The risk went up nearly five times for children who had more than four hours of screen time.

Kaiser Permanente Union Employees In Colorado Authorize Possible Strike

(Denver, CO) -- A union that represents about half of Kaiser Permanente’s employees in Colorado has voted to authorize a strike. Officials with the local Service Employees International Union chapter say that about 99-percent of those who voted supported the strike authorization. The union’s contract with the health care company will expire at the end of this month, and the vote authorizes a strike of up to two weeks. Kaiser Permanente Colorado says negotiations on a new contract are ongoing and could continue beyond the deadline if progress is being made.

Now that August has come and gone, a spokesperson said the details will be hammered out and finalized “in the coming months.” Flavored cigarettes have been banned since 2009, but menthol was left out of that ban after lobbying from the industry.
