Families invited to Matador Family Back to School Bash TONIGHT
(Seguin) -- The Matador Family will be reuniting tonight with the second annual Back to School Bash. The Seguin ISD celebration will be the official kick-off of today’s Matador Football game at Matador Stadium.
Allison Seidenberger, Seguin ISD’s ACE director, says Matador families will be treated to a host of fun and free activities on the outside patio located behind the Seguin High School campus.
She says the focus is to simply bring the Matador Family together.
“Every campus and a lot of our district departments are represented as well as
a little bit of community involvement. We do have some door prizes as well but the idea is just to bring our families together, to
reunite, to celebrate the start of a new school year and there’s nothing like the energy of a Friday night football game and so we
are excited to have some of our groups perform for the attendees and then also we will invite everyone to head over to Bash, pg. 3

Declaration, continued.
This declaration has the potential to protect lives and property as there is little to no rain in the forecast. We urge all citizens to take safety precautions during these severe hot temperatures,” said Kutscher.
Assistant Fire Marshal Bryce Houlton adds, “In addition to increased fires and notable larger brush fires that burned 332 acres and another 192 acres coupled with the extreme heat and drought, the county fire department as well as volunteer and city fire departments have been overwhelmingly busy. This declaration makes emergency resources available to the county in this time of need.”
The Texas Government Code Chapter 418 gives the county judge the power to declare a local disaster within the county as it indicates, “if the threat of disaster is imminent”. A local disaster declaration expires seven days after it issuance, unless the commissioners court consents to its renewal or continuance.
Bash, continued.
the Matador Football game and support all of our groups that perform there as well. But it’s a great time to bring families and community together, have some fun and spend time together,” said Seidenberger.
Seidenberger says fun and games will be provided by every school and campus department. She says then together, families can walk on over to Matador Stadium for the game against Laredo United.
“Every campus and department has come up with their own booth. Some are food-based. Some are games, interactive items and the food is free. Nothing that we are doing at the event is a charge or a cost to any of our families. We want it to just be a time to come and enjoy and so we will have things like hot dogs and waters and chips, snow cones, popcorn and until things run out, we will keep serving and like I said, the games are all just interactive. It’s intended to be family fun and we will have little prizes and we also have the big door prizes so everyone who signs in and registers is eligible for a door prize and we have generous support from so many people in our community to make this event come off as well as it does,” said Seidenberger.
The Back to School Bash will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Kick-off for tonight’s football game is 7:30 p.m.

Martinson
Helen Hope Balch Martinson passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Seguin, Texas on September 3, 2023. She was 57 days shy of her 104th birthday.
Helen was born to Lillian and Berta Bach on October 30, 1919 in Elba, Alabama. She grew up in nearby Fayette, where she began her life-long love of music.
Helen graduated from Montevalo College for Women, where she became an expert on both piano and organ. After graduation, she began her career both teaching and performing her talents in Greenville, and Birmingham; all the while, maintaining the grace, etiquette and charm of a true lady of the South.
It was in Birmingham where music led to her meeting the love of her life, Roy, who was an accomplished cellist. Roy lived in Iowa, and was visiting his brother, a colleague of Helen’s, in Birmingham. They were set up with a blind date by his brother, and that was it - they started making beautiful music together until Roy’s death in 2000.
After their marriage in 1947, Roy and Helen moved to Evanston, IL, where Roy completed his education at Northwestern University. After graduation, Roy was selected as a cellist for the Houston Symphony,
necessitating their move to Houston in 1950.
In Houston, Helen and Roy started raising their family - Ed and Marty, and became involved in the formation and founding of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where she served as organist and choir director for 31 years. She also taught in the Houston ISD elementary system for several years, as well as giving private piano instructions in her home.
They moved to Seguin in 1989, and she soon became involved in many volunteer activities including Seguin Conservation Society, Mid-Texas Symphony, Christian Cupboard, Lazy Daisy Garden Club, multitudes of groups and committees at her beloved St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and substitute pianist/organist at several local churches.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Martinson, parents Lillian and Berta Balch, and her brother Crawford Balch, and his wife Ruth. She is survived by her son, Ed Martinson of Houston, daughter, Marty Keil and husband Don of Seguin, granddaughter Morgan Stubbs and husband Cameron of Georgetown, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Friday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E Nolte St., Seguin, TX. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Mid-Texas Symphony, The Seguin Conservation Society, or The Christian Cupboard.

Narcan Available Over The Counter
(Undated) -- Narcan will be available over the counter starting this week at major retailers like Walmart, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid. The nasal spray can be used to help people suffering from an opioid overdose and requires no training to use. A box contains two doses and sells for 45 dollars.
CDC Warns Healthcare Providers To Look Out For Deadly Flesh-Eating Bacteria
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is warning doctors to look out for deadly flesh-eating bacteria in waters of the Gulf of Mexico and East Coast. The agency says the bacteria, known as Vibrio vulnificus, could be the reason for infected wounds in people who have been in those waters. The CDC advisory says the bacteria naturally lives in coastal waters and is usually transmitted through open-wound contact or sometimes through eating raw or undercooked shellfish. It says that the growing number of infections could be attributed to the heat wave and rising sea surface temperatures. Fatal infections were reported in New York, Connecticut and North Carolina.
RSV On The Rise
(Undated) -- Cases of the respiratory illness RSV are on the rise among young children in the Southeast, namely in Georgia and Florida. The CDC on Tuesday predicted infections are likely to spread to the north and west over the next two to three months. In the middle of August, the number of children four and younger who’d come down with the illness jumped from two per 100-thousand to seven per 100-thousand. Most patients were younger than one. A new antibody treatment for RSV has been approved but won’t be available until October.
COVID On The Upswing
(Undated) -- COVID-19 infections are on the rise as the country heads into fall. Hospitalizations and deaths have been increasing and the virus is being detected more frequently in wastewater samples. It’s hard to track exact numbers as states are no longer required to report numbers to the CDC. The numbers we do have, however, show a 16 percent increase in infections in the week ending August 26th.
