Seguin ISD Superintendent begins the GOODBYES

Dr. G. shares more behind his decision to leave the district

(Seguin) – Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Guiterrez is sharing his gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all those in the Matador Family. After six plus years, Gutierrez will be leaving the Seguin ISD at the end of this month to accept a position as the chief of schools in the Leander ISD. Gutierrez made the announcement to families and staff Thursday evening.

By late that evening and early Friday morning, the reality of it all, he says, was beginning to be clear as he begins this journey of goodbye.

“In the way that I’ve described it today after I had the opportunity to see the Matador Family, it’s been excruciatingly painful because I’ve grown to Goodbye, pg. 3

Goodbye, continued.

love the people who surround me every single day and I’ve just been amazed over the past six plus years at how the faculty and staff and the community and parents have embraced me in my leadership and welcomed me with welcome arms. It’s been truly remarkable and that’s what makes this decision really hard,” said Gutierrez.

Gutierrez says although it’s more bitter than sweet at this time, he is thankful for the timing of it all and believes the district is poised to continue to do even greater things.

“I feel like I’ve poured everything into the last six years – my heart and my soul and it’s been worth it because I truly believe that the Seguin ISD has made significant progress from where we were when I first came but I had to take a step back and really think about what was important for this moment in time for me personally, for my family while also thinking about where Seguin was in the current leadership that we have and the current board that we have so I feel very confident in the direction that Seguin will continue to go. We’ve worked so hard to get to where we are and we’ve worked so hard on Strategic Plan 2.0 that is really the guide towards excellence, so I feel like I’m leaving on a very high note,” said Gutierrez.

Over the course of these six years, he admits there have been other opportunities to move on. Gutierrez says those opportunities, however, were never personal nor against the school district and its families. And while he agrees that the position and promotions of professional superintendents over the years have changed and are, in fact, a more revolving profession, he prides himself that he was able to commit to the Seguin ISD for as long as he did.

“The average tenure right now I think is under three

years for a superintendent. In fact, I was part of the first year’s superintendent cohort from 2017-2018. Every single one of those members is on their second or even third school district. I’m proud that I had the opportunity to lead here for over six years and yes there were some other opportunities – it’s part of it. People recruit you when you are doing good work. You get noticed and Seguin ISD is on the map and when I was having conversations with some fellow superintendents several of which have been Superintendent of the Year for the State, they’ve said Seguin has name recognition now. We didn’t know about Seguin before. So, you are going to get recruited. The unfortunate part was that some of these opportunities were public. When I talk to superintendents, they are constantly exploring opportunities. It’s part of it when you are doing great work,” said Gutierrez.

However, opportunities beyond the Seguin ISD are not in the end what has helped him make this latest decision to leave the Seguin ISD. That’s because more pressing developments have occurred over the last few years. The main one is becoming a father to two elementary-age sons.

Goodbye, continued.

He says the success that one of his sons has recently garnered in being selected as a cast member in the worldtouring Broadway International Musical “Sound of Music” has opened his eyes even more.

He says if there was ever a life lesson, it’s that family always comes first just as all Seguin ISD families have illustrated.

“There were just a few moments with my two boys over the last couple of weeks that really sealed the deal for me and reminded me that your family is your absolute priority and that I needed to make some changes because I missed out on a lot of things with these two boys but I feel like I loved the job and it really never bothered me but I truly believe it has had an impact on these two boys and its certainly going to be different moving forward. With Luke my oldest one, he was on tour and people would ask well tell me about your dad who is a superintendent and tell me about him and he’d said, ‘oh, he’s always working. If he’s not at work or at an event, then he’s at home on the computer in the kitchen all day and all night and I thought I don’t want him to just remember me that way,” said Gutierrez.

In making this move to Leander, Gutierrez will help oversee the district’s administrative leadership, which has nearly 42,000 students. That’s compared to Seguin’s 7,200 student enrollment.

The district’s demographics vary from Seguin. Its students are 50 percent white, 26 percent Hispanic, 4.5 percent African-American, and 6.1 percent identified as two or more races. The fast-growing district was last rated as a “B” by the Texas Education Agency.

He says while he hopes to one day return as a superintendent of schools, he is looking forward to this new change in responsibilities.

“I’ll have four area superintendents that I will work closely with who will report to me as well as the student services, safety team as well and 50 campuses so I am excited about providing that support and developing and building leadership capacity. That’s an area I am passionate about, but I think on the other side, I’m looking forward to stepping out of the spotlight for a period,” said Gutierrez.

During his Seguin tenure, Gutierrez earned the Region 20 Superintendent of the Year award in 2023, while the school board was named Region 20 School Board of the Year in 2022. He has also worked to change the overall culture in the Seguin ISD.

In the coming weeks, Seguin ISD trustees will discuss the process and timeline to hire a permanent superintendent.

LAREDO UNITED RACES PAST MATADORS IN HIGH OCTANE AFFAIR ON HALL OF HONOR

(Seguin) -- Seguin and Laredo United lit up the scoreboard for more than 120 points at Matador Stadium, but it was the Longhorns who came away on top at the end in a 62-59 victory Friday over the Matadors on Seguin Athletic Hall of Honor night.

The Matadors gave the Longhorns short fields on their first two possessions thanks to fumbles and United took advantage to take an early 14-0 lead, but the Mats struck back with big plays to push in front at the end of the first quarter. Seguin fullback Holt Haas took the ball to pay-dirt from 22 yards out for the Matadors first score and Nik Henry flew by the Longhorn defense like the track star he is for a 78-yard catch and run score. After two-point conversions following each score, Seguin lead 16-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Mats would cough up the ball again in the second quarter leading to another United score as the Longhorns pulled ahead 35-22 late in the

second quarter. A Devin Hall five-yard TD run for Seguin put an end to the scoring at the half with United up, 35-30.

The fireworks continued in the third quarter when United capped off a 65-yard drive to start the second half with a TD, but Hall would take the ensuing kickoff back the other way 78 yards to bring the Matadors within 42-38. Seguin running back John Jackson put the Mats back in front at 45-42 with a nine-yard rushing score with about two minutes left to go in the quarter.

The Longhorns came back with a score on a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Atzel Chavez Jr. to receiver Christian Saldana to make it 49-45 United with 28 seconds remaining in the third. The Longhorns would then recover a loose ball on the next kickoff and score again on a 15yard TD pass from Chavez to Alek Leven to go up 55-45 early in the fourth quarter. Seguin rushing scores by quarterback Corey Dailey and Jackson

would be sandwiched around another Chavez TD pass and United would hold on for the win.

Jackson had another 200-yard rushing effort for Seguin despite the loss totaling 233 yards on the ground on 23 carries to go along with two touchdowns. Henry lead Matador receivers with four catches for 130 yards hauling in two TD passes from Dailey.

Former Matador student-athletes Alex Bothe and Kelly Lamb were inducted into the Seguin ISD Athletic Hall of Honor before kickoff. Bothe and Kelly both graduated in 2010 and starred for the Seguin volleyball and softball teams.

The Mats fall to 0-3 on the season. Seguin will start District 12-5A play next Thursday night when they travel to Kyle Lehman to battle the Lobos. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and we’ll have the game for you on KWED. Our pregame show will start at 6:30 p.m. Thursday on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.

Martinson

Helen Hope Balch Martinson passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Seguin, Texas on September 3, 2023. She was 57 days shy of her 104th birthday.

Helen was born to Lillian and Berta Bach on October 30, 1919 in Elba, Alabama. She grew up in nearby Fayette, where she began her life-long love of music.

Helen graduated from Montevalo College for Women, where she became an expert on both piano and organ. After graduation, she began her career both teaching and performing her talents in Greenville, and Birmingham; all the while, maintaining the grace, etiquette and charm of a true lady of the South.

It was in Birmingham where music led to her meeting the love of her life, Roy, who was an accomplished cellist. Roy lived in Iowa, and was visiting his brother, a colleague of Helen’s, in Birmingham. They were set up with a blind date by his brother, and that was it - they started making beautiful music together until Roy’s death in 2000.

After their marriage in 1947, Roy and Helen moved to Evanston, IL, where Roy completed his education at Northwestern University. After graduation, Roy was selected as a cellist for the Houston Symphony,

necessitating their move to Houston in 1950.

In Houston, Helen and Roy started raising their family - Ed and Marty, and became involved in the formation and founding of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where she served as organist and choir director for 31 years. She also taught in the Houston ISD elementary system for several years, as well as giving private piano instructions in her home.

They moved to Seguin in 1989, and she soon became involved in many volunteer activities including Seguin Conservation Society, Mid-Texas Symphony, Christian Cupboard, Lazy Daisy Garden Club, multitudes of groups and committees at her beloved St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and substitute pianist/organist at several local churches.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Martinson, parents Lillian and Berta Balch, and her brother Crawford Balch, and his wife Ruth. She is survived by her son, Ed Martinson of Houston, daughter, Marty Keil and husband Don of Seguin, granddaughter Morgan Stubbs and husband Cameron of Georgetown, and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Friday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E Nolte St., Seguin, TX. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Mid-Texas Symphony, The Seguin Conservation Society, or The Christian Cupboard.

Researchers See Uptick In Cancer Diagnoses In Younger Adults

(United Kingdom) -- Researchers are seeing an uptick in the number of people under 50 years old being diagnosed with cancer. That’s according to a new study published in BMJ Oncology. New cases of cancer among younger adults went up globally by just over 79-percent from 1990 to 2019. The number of early-onset cancer deaths also surged by nearly 28-percent in the same time span. Researchers said the data could be a “prediction” of how the rates will change from 2020 to 2030, calling it “a warning for future burden on healthcare systems.”

Mexico Decriminalizes Abortion Nationwide

(Mexico City) -- Mexico is decriminalizing abortion nationwide. The country’s Supreme Court issued the ruling Wednesday, saying the penalization of abortion “is unconstitutional, since it violates the human rights of women...” Laws on abortion were previously left to a state-bystate basis, with 12 of the country’s 32 states already voting to decriminalize it.

Study: Wildfire Smoke Toxic To Human Brain

(Sacramento, CA) -- New findings are linking wildfire smoke and pollution from agriculture with an increased risk of developing dementia. Researchers at the University of Michigan say that all airborne particles increase the risk of dementia but there is a “strong likelihood” that agricultural pollution and wildfire smoke are especially toxic to the brain. The Michigan researchers say the findings could not be explained by other factors. This year saw a record-number of air quality alerts in the U.S., driven by massive wildfires in Canada.

Internet Use Linked To Lower, Higher Dementia Risks

(New York, NY) -- Using the internet is linked to cognitive benefits to older people, according to new research. A study out last month in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that people between 50 and 65 who use the internet regularly see their chances of developing dementia drop by nearly nine percent. People using the internet for more than two hours a day, however, saw their risk for dementia increase.
