Local talent brings live piano to First United Bank
(Seguin) – Leave it to George Winfield of GW Piano Tuning to spice up the music playlist for a local bank. Winfield, who is legally blind, was recently invited to play the piano in the bank lobby of First United Bank – Seguin East.
Summer Robledo, the bank’s Spend Life Wisely ambassador and team building specialist, says the invitation was all part of the bank’s Local Spotlight feature in which folks are periodically invited to showcase their talents or services. Robledo says it’s all about defining the people who help to make up the Seguin community.
“First United, we are not the typical bank. We believe in impacting and empowering others to spend life wisely. We do that in four pillars – faith, financial wellbeing, personal growth and health and wellness and we try when we do our Local Spotlights to invite people within the community that fall within those four categories because we really want to be a part of the community. We are a community bank. Like my whole job is about community involvement and so our Local Spotlights, we can find not-for-profits, small local businesses—we don’t typically do like big national chains because Piano, pg. 3

Forever in our hearts Seguin vows never to forget Sept. 11
(Seguin) -- A host of events was held this weekend in observance of our fellow Americans and first responders who fell victim to terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.
Monday marked the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that killed 2,996 people in the United States. It was in 2001 that
members of the al-Qaida terrorist group hijacked four planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Here in Seguin, several organizations vowed never to forget the events of that day. Among the events hosted were the American Legion Post 245
First Responder Breakfast, the Hillcrest Church 911 American Celebration, the American Legion Riders 245 and Gruene Harley Davidson Never Forget 9/11 Ride, a solemn ceremony in the city of Seguin outside the Seguin Police Department and the Seguin High School JROTC’s public remembrance ceremony at Matador Stadium.

Piano, continued.
we want it to be local and so we ask them to come out, do a display. Mr. Winfield happened to be very willing to do a concert for us. But every one of our locations has one. We don’t even have to bank you in order to spotlight you. We prefer but we don’t have to just because of the fact that it’s not about getting accounts or it’s not about what we get out of it. It’s about how do we give back to the community. How do we spotlight our local businesses to help build up their community base and do all of that to kind of help them?” said Robledo.
In fact, each of the three First United Banks in Seguin hosts their own Local Spotlight.
First United Bank’s senior relationship banker Pat Rodriguez says having a lobby filled with customers and employees during his performance was exactly what they had hoped for. She says it’s about reminding folks that we are all important.
“I feel like every single person has a gift that they can offer and give to and share with one another and I think what a more perfect way that Mr. Winfield can do that for us especially because of the fact that he is blind, and he has such a tremendous gift that brings so much peace and love and joy to all of us by listening to his music. I think it’s awesome,” said Rodriguez.
For years, Winfield has reportedly been rocking his great personality with tellers at the local bank that choosing him to be the bank’s first Local Spotlight was easy.
Winfield says his love for piano started 60 years ago. He says it was the best decision he could have made as a child.
“I went to the school for the blind from first through
12th and in the second grade, someone came and asked all the little second graders if they would like to learn to play the piano so for some reason unknown to me – I just raised my hand and said ‘sure, why not?” Winfield.
Encouraged by those in attendance, Winfield believes the pleasure was all his in finally performing for what he calls a great group of people.
“I really just wanted to do it for the bank to help them, to promote them. I mean I didn’t come with any expectations of becoming a star or anything, but I just wanted to do something nice for the bank. They were nice to my wife and I when she was alive and really helped us out a lot and so I just thought maybe it was something that I could do for them,” said Winfield.
As for vision, Winfield says his just happens to be for music.
“It’s a talent that God has given me and it’s not right for me to not use it,” said Winfield.
As part of its official mission, First United is dedicated to building a culture of care in its communities and works to build lifelong, multigenerational relationships with their families.
More importantly, Robledo says First United works to illustrate how strong communities are created by coming together.
“A lot of banks are pushing the online and everything like that. We want you to come in and see who we are, what we stand for. Like I said, it’s not traditional. So, that is kind of one of the ways that we are able to do it but it’s really about community involvement,” said Robledo.

Martinson
Helen Hope Balch Martinson passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Seguin, Texas on September 3, 2023. She was 57 days shy of her 104th birthday.
Helen was born to Lillian and Berta Bach on October 30, 1919 in Elba, Alabama. She grew up in nearby Fayette, where she began her life-long love of music.
Helen graduated from Montevalo College for Women, where she became an expert on both piano and organ. After graduation, she began her career both teaching and performing her talents in Greenville, and Birmingham; all the while, maintaining the grace, etiquette and charm of a true lady of the South.
It was in Birmingham where music led to her meeting the love of her life, Roy, who was an accomplished cellist. Roy lived in Iowa, and was visiting his brother, a colleague of Helen’s, in Birmingham. They were set up with a blind date by his brother, and that was it - they started making beautiful music together until Roy’s death in 2000.
After their marriage in 1947, Roy and Helen moved to Evanston, IL, where Roy completed his education at Northwestern University. After graduation, Roy was selected as a cellist for the Houston Symphony,
necessitating their move to Houston in 1950.
In Houston, Helen and Roy started raising their family - Ed and Marty, and became involved in the formation and founding of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where she served as organist and choir director for 31 years. She also taught in the Houston ISD elementary system for several years, as well as giving private piano instructions in her home.
They moved to Seguin in 1989, and she soon became involved in many volunteer activities including Seguin Conservation Society, Mid-Texas Symphony, Christian Cupboard, Lazy Daisy Garden Club, multitudes of groups and committees at her beloved St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and substitute pianist/organist at several local churches.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Martinson, parents Lillian and Berta Balch, and her brother Crawford Balch, and his wife Ruth. She is survived by her son, Ed Martinson of Houston, daughter, Marty Keil and husband Don of Seguin, granddaughter Morgan Stubbs and husband Cameron of Georgetown, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Friday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E Nolte St., Seguin, TX. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Mid-Texas Symphony, The Seguin Conservation Society, or The Christian Cupboard.

New Director Of CDC Says COVID Is Here To Stay
(Atlanta, GA) -- The new head of the CDC says COVID-19 is here to stay. She also said a new booster for COVID will be available as soon as next week.
Advocates Try Picking Up Civilian Enrollment In 9/11 Health Programs
(New York, NY) -- While 85-percent of first responders are enrolled in 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund, only ten-percent of civilians have signed up. Dana Nelson was a ninth grader at Stuyvesant High School on 9/11 and never could have imagined she’d be diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33. John Mormonda worked downtown at the time of the attacks and was later diagnosed with male breast cancer and skin cancer. They’re urging anyone who was downtown at the time of the attacks to get checkups and enroll in 9/11 related health programs. In January, uterine cancer became the 69th recognized 9/11 related cancer.
California Lawmakers Proposal 2 Legalize Psychedelics
(Sacramento, CA) -- California lawmakers have passed a bill authored that would legalize some plant-based psychedelics. Governor Newsom has until October 14th to sign the bill.

Pulls Super Hot Chips Off Shelves After One Death and Three Hospitalizations
(Austin, TX) -- The manufacturer of a super spicy corn chip is pulling its product off store shelves after a TikTok challenge led to one death and three hospitalizations. A 14-year-old boy in Massachusetts died after accepting “Paqui’s [[ PACK-eez ]] One Chip Challenge” which requires participants to chew the chip and not swallow it for a full minute. The Austin, Texas-based company says the challenge was intended for adults only and not anyone with food sensitivity, underlying health conditions, or pregnancy. The blue corn chips are flavored with sea salt, Carolina Reaper peppers, and Naga Viper peppers, the world’s hottest chili pepper. Paqui’s website suggests drinking milk or eating ice cream to cool down.
