TLU Men’s Soccer Makes History with WIN OVER McMurry

SEGUIN, Texas -- With a 1-0 win over McMurry (1-4-2) on Sunday, Texas Lutheran men’s soccer (9-0) is off to the best start in program history.

TLU’s ninth-straight win to open the season bested the program’s 8-0 start in 2001. With the win, TLU extended its win streak to 11 games dating back to last season - the longest winning streak in program history - surpassing the 10 game winning streak from 2000-01.

The two teams played a very even match. The match went to halftime scoreless with the War Hawks holding an 2-1 advantage in shots with no shots on target for either club.

A 0-0 stalemate lasted between the two squads deep into the second half until Erick Lopez (Humble/Humble) broke the tie with a 78th-minute penalty kick to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The game-winning penalty kick is the second of the weekend for Lopez as he increases his goal tally to four on the 2023 season - ranking second in the SCAC.

Texas Lutheran’s patented defense stood strong the rest of the way, keeping the War Hawks out of the net for their sixth shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs finished with a 4-3 shot advantage. Texas Lutheran continues their four-game

homestand as they open SCAC play on Friday, Sept. 29, with a Friday night matchup with the Schreiner Mountaineers (4-3-1). The match is scheduled for 7:30 PM and will be broadcast on TLU+. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Eddie (Louise) Lutz was born to Volcient Smith on October 11, 1924, in Fort Worth, TX, and passed away on August 23, 2023, at the age of 98. She was sent to an orphanage at age 4. She graduated in 1945 and worked for various companies before meeting her first husband, Herbert Odom. They moved to San Antonio, where she worked as a weapons manager for the Air Force.

She was widowed at age 33 and married husband number two, Vivian Vaillancourt two years later. His daughters, Candy and Susan, became part of her family.

She fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse by studying to become an LVN while volunteering as a Gray Lady at Wilford Hall in San Antonio. She and her daughter both graduated from nursing school together. She later worked in private duty nursing and cared for her husband and mother until they passed away.

Her family was everything to her, beyond just biology. She embraced her church community, mission trips, and close friends who became like siblings.

After marrying Tildon Lutz, her third husband, she relocated to Seguin, TX. Together, they purchased six acres along the Guadalupe River.

With this marriage, her family grew as Tildon had four children who brought along their own children and grandchildren.

Since Tildon was a Mason, Louise became a member of the Order of

the Eastern Star, Seguin Lodge 555. She once again expanded her family to include all the brothers and sisters of the organization. She cherished her time as a member and, later, as a Worthy Matron.

Survived by sons Roy Odom, and Delton Lutz, daughters, June Barnhouse, Candy Egbert, Shirley Grobe, and Janet Waer, grandchildren Kristin Scheffer, Robert Barnhouse, and Erin Barnhouse, and multiple other step-grandchildren, nieces Louise Jewett, Ann Foxworth, and nephew Kenneth Britton, great-grandsons Cole Scheffer, Cade Scheffer and multiple step-great-grandchildren.

Louise is preceded in death by Volcient Smith-Britton, Beth Nalson, Dorothy Stovall, Mary McMullen, Bill Britton, Susan Vaillancourt, Ricky Lutz and her husbands Herbert Odom, Vivian Vaillancourt, and Tildon Lutz.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 10 a.m. at La Trinidad United Methodist Church in Seguin with the Rev. Ron Welborn officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Another memorial service is being planned in Maryland, later in the fall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, New Braunfels, (Seguin on the memorandum line) 572 W. Starting Monday Americans Can Order More Free COVID-19 Tests Online

(Washington, DC) -- Americans will be able to order more free COVID-19 tests online starting Monday. The federal government is relaunching its program to provide free COVID tests now that most insurance companies aren’t covering the cost with the expiration of the pandemic emergency declaration this past spring . Each household can order up to four tests online at covidtests-dot-gov. As for the unused tests you still have at home, don’t throw them out even if the expiration date has passed. Health officials say check the lot numbers because many of those dates have been extended and they’ll be listed on the website, too.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers With Local Ties Sued By State

(Santa Rosa, CA) -- A chain of crisis pregnancy centers is being sued by California. California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed the lawsuit, which names Bridges Pregnancy Clinic and Care Center. It says the chain and a national anti-abortion group are violating California false advertising law in promoting an unproven procedure called “abortion pill reversal.” It involves taking a high dose of the hormone progesterone after a patient has ingested abortion-inducing medication. It is considered unethical by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Crisis pregnancy centers are often faith-based and are known for trying to convince women not to have abortions.

Biden Administration Seeks To Remove Medical Bills From Credit Reports

(Washington, DC) -- Unpaid medical bills may soon be removed from your credit reports. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has announced that it expects to issue a proposed rule next year that would bar consumer credit companies from including medical debts on credit reports. Under the new rule, debt collectors would no longer be able to use medical debt as leverage to pressure consumers into paying questionable bills. The head of the bureau said, “When someone gets sick they should be able to focus on getting better, rather than fighting debt collectors trying to extort them into paying bills they may not even owe.”

Obesity On The Rise In Increasing Number Of States

(Atlanta, GA) -- Obesity is on the rise. That’s according to the CDC, which cites data that shows 22 states had at least 35-percent of adults with obesity in 2022. That number is up from 19 in 2021. Obesity is most prevalent in Louisiana, Oklahoma and West Virginia, with more than 40-percent of adults being classified as obese. The Midwest and southern regions of the U.S. had the highest numbers overall.
