National Night Out parties set for tonight in Seguin, Guadalupe County

(Seguin) – Tonight is the night to come out and meet your neighbor. Today is National Night Out where neighborhoods are invited to gather and talk about ways to protect themselves from thieves and other types of crime. While it may be easier for city of Seguin residents to host block

parties and gather on their lawns, crime prevention efforts have been well part of the tradition for families and neighbors in the rural parts of Guadalupe County.

Warrant round up results in almost two dozen drug arrests

(Seguin) – Months and months of investigation plus tips called into the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers Hotline have all resulted in the felony drug arrests of more than a dozen individuals. That’s according to Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force officials who collaborated with numerous other agencies to make the arrests on Sept. 28 and 29.

They say in addition to the execution of arrest warrants and during the course of the operation, an additional 18 individuals were arrested on various narcotics and firearm related charges.

Seized were 7,200 grams of cocaine; 142 grams of Methamphetamine; 40.4 grams of marijuana; 5 grams of heroin; three

grams of THC Vape cartridges; 0.6 grams of Xanax and approximately $4,000 in cash.

The operation also resulted in the recovery of a stolen vehicle, trailer, heavy trencher, and firearm. The recovered property totaled $65,000.

The Joint Directive Patrol Department worked alongside the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, the Seguin Police Department C.A.S.E Unit and the New Braunfels Police Department Street Crimes Unit.

The operation occurred in the cities of Seguin, New Braunfels, Cibolo and throughout the rest of Guadalupe County.

The Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force (GCNTF) is composed of

detectives, investigators and criminal interdiction K9 Units from Seguin Police Department, Cibolo Police Department, and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.

Those arrested include Roxanne Herrera, 35; Jason Jeffrey Guerrero, 41; Mark Anthony Soto, 39; Frank Andrew Andrade, 35; Benancio Lopez Garcia, 38; Jesus Salazar III, 47; Sandra Castillo, 52; Eric Baldera, 26; Katrina Beltran, 40; Ricardo Rosas, 25; Efrain Mascorro Jr., 26; Valeria Cruz, 38; Christopher Hardin, 25; Windell Miranda, 43; Antonio Torres, 33 and Benjamin Guerrero, 50.

Additional arrests are anticipated in relation to this operation as well as with new and current investigations.

For the last several years, Marilyn Marshall says she’s has been opening her house and hosting the annual gathering.

“We are about halfway down Altwein Lane close to the road so it kind of makes it convenient. Now, we do invite a lot of other people too like the sheriff’s office. The Sheriff always comes and sends deputies, and we get the canine deputy, and the McQueeney Fire Department always makes a big showing, different groups like that,” said Marshall.

Marshall says folks new and old to the area have all benefited from such a gathering.

“You learn who your neighbors are, where they live. We always meet somebody new every time we do this. We have a few people that come that we haven’t met before and we are just really happy to get to know them. It’s just a nice way to get together and get to know your neighbors,” said Marshall.

The Altwein gathering will be held today from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 1120 Altwin Ln. Free food and drinks will be served while they last.

Also bridging county residents together are Jackie and Charlene Nolte. The couple has been hosting its National Night Out Party for the last 10 years. Dubbed “Party by the Barn at Creekbottom Farm,” a gathering of folks has taken place at 4907 FM 1044 near the dividing line of Guadalupe County Pct. 1 and Pct. 4. Tonight’s gathering

will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. A barn hall meeting is also set for 7 p.m.

Neighbors are asked to bring their drink of choice and finger foods to share plus their lawn chair. Guadalupe County first responders plus county officials will also be in attendance.

City of Seguin emergency personnel will also be kept quite busy tonight throughout the city. Seguin Police Department officials say approximately 25 local neighborhoods have signed up to host a party or community gathering.

One of the most talked about locations for a National Night Out Party in the city will be the newly transformed Bauer Park located on East College Street.

During the park’s ribbon cutting last week, Jason Biesenbach, Seguin City Councilman District 7, publicly extended the invitation to his neighbors.

“Tuesday is National Night Out so if you do live in or around our park here, we will be here at this pavilion during our National Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. So, if you live in the area around here, come on out, bring your kids. The park is open. It’s going to be a great time,” said Biesenbach. Impromptu parties and the gathering of neighbors are still encouraged everywhere. Sign-up was only necessary if folks wanted a visit from an officer or firefighter. Law enforcement officials say the more people know their neighbors, the more likely they are able to look out for each other on a regular basis.

Bulldogs Record Shutout over No. 11 Trinity to Remain UNBEATEN

SEGUIN, Texas -- In front of a Gustafson Field crowd decked out in pink for the annual Breast Cancer Awareness match, the Texas Lutheran men’s soccer team (11-0, 2-0 SCAC) shutout the 11th-ranked Trinity Tigers Sunday evening. The win is the first win over the Tigers since the 2019 SCAC Tournament and the Bulldogs 13th win in a row dating back to last season - one shy of the longest streak in program history without a loss. The Bulldogs stay unblemished at 11-0 while the Tigers fall to 6-1-2.

The shutout marks the eighth of the season for the Bulldogs - tying for the third most in program history, trailing only the 10 shutout seasons in 2003 and 2015.

Jack Manke (Houston/Stratford) netted his fifth goal of the season via a free kick in the 44th-minute as the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead into

halftime. The goal would be the inevitable game winner, Manke’s fourth of the season - tying for fifth most in a single-season in program history.

In the 81st minute, Preston Huff (Cypress/ Cy-Fair) would ice the game with his fifth goal of the season and third in the last four matches via an assist from Manke, bringing the game to its final score of 2-0.

Noel Pena (Houston/Cy-Falls) recorded his seventh shutout of the season with six saves to keep the Tigers off the board. The goalkeeper win was a historic one for Pena as he moved into a tie for fifth place for most career goalkeeper wins in program history (19), moved into second place for most wins in a single-season (11), and is now half a shutout shy of the program record for single-season shutouts held by Jonathan Michael (8, 2014).

Overall, Texas Lutheran was outshot by the Tigers, 14-10, with each team having six shots on goal. Trinity would also hold an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

After a four-game homestand, the Bulldogs will now venture out on a four-game road trip starting with a trip to Shreveport, Louisiana, for a matchup with the Centenary College Gents on Friday, Oct. 6. Paxton And Yelp Sue Each Other Over Pregnancy Center Descriptions

(Austin, TX) -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Yelp are suing each other over the verbiage used described crisis pregnancy centers online. After the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Yelp began notifying users that crisis pregnancy centers “typically provide limited medical services and may not have licensed medical professionals onsite.” Paxton said the site violated Texas law by posting allegedly incorrect information. Yelp preemptively sued Paxton on Wednesday in order to maintain the notices about crisis pregnancy centers not providing abortion services. On Thursday, Paxton filed his own lawsuit alleging the company misled consumers.

Study: Teens Whose Parents Binge Drink Are Four Times As Likely To Drink Themselves

(Atlanta, GA) -- Teens whose parents drink regularly are four times more likely to drink themselves. That’s according to a new study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health. Senior study author Dr. Marissa Esser, who leads the CDC’s alcohol program, said the research “provides more evidence that binge drinking is not only harmful to the person drinking alcohol, but also to others around them by increasing the risk of their teens drinking the alcohol.”

Mayor Adams To Host Fentanyl Crisis Summit

(New York, NY) -- New York City Mayor Eric Adams will be hosting a summit next week on the fentanyl crisis. His office says the two-day meeting will include strategy sessions with elected leaders, public health officials and law enforcement professionals, focused on education, enforcement, awareness, prevention, and treatment with the goal of developing a national strategy to combat the scourge of fentanyl. Adams notes that fentanyl is now the most common drug involved in overdose deaths in New York City, including the exposure death of a one-year-old boy at a Bronx daycare earlier this month.

New Weight Gain Study Shows Foods To Avoid

(Undated) -- A new study shows what types of food to eat and avoid in order to prevent or lessen weight gain for middle-aged people. The study published in “The BMJ” shows there was less weight gain in people who ate whole grains, fruit and non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, carrots and spinach. These people avoided sugary drinks and starchy vegetables such as peas, corn and potatoes. Researchers studied more than two decades of data from almost 137-thousand people.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.
