Deadline arrives to register to vote

Today marks last day to make a change in address (Seguin) -- If you don’t want to be turned away from the polls on November 3 and prevented from voting for the next U.S. President, then today is the day to take some action. Today is the deadline to register to vote. Lisa Hayes, Guadalupe County Elections Administrator, says this reminder is for anyone who has not yet registered and for those of us who know a few procrastinators. “So, this is an important day for voters to know about because if they are not currently registered to vote and they want to vote in the November Election, this is their last chance to register. So, our office hours today are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and voters are encouraged to come in and register if they are not already registered. If they want to mail in a voter registration application that is also okay, but they have to know that it must be postmarked by Oct. 5. So, just having it in their hand today is not enough. If they are mailing it, it must be postmarked by Oct. 5,” said Hayes.

out of the county, then they need to register in their new county. If they moved within the county, then they need to give us their updated address because your ballot style is determined by the address on your voter registration. So, if they moved across town, they may have a different ballot style at their new address than they did at their old address and the ballot issued is always for the address we have on record,” said Hayes. Hayes says not only will staff members be on hand today to help register people, but they will also help double check if someone isn’t sure. “They can register by walking it into our office and picking up an application and filling out and leaving it with us or they can go to votetexas.gov., print one out off of the secretary of state’s website and mail it,” said Hayes. Voter registration applications can be picked up at either the Seguin Elections Office located at 215 S. Milam or at the Schertz Elections Office at 1101 Elbel, Schertz. Voters, again, can also go to votetexas.gov and use the SOS online voter registration application.

In addition, Hayes says today is also the last day to ensure that all registered voters get the right ballot. She says this is especially important for those who have recently moved.

Now if you choose to mail in your application, officials ask that you consider going into the post office instead of dropping it off in the blue mail boxes outside to ensure the Oct. 5 postmark.

“If they are changing their address, if they’ve moved, they still need to update their address. If they’ve moved

City of Marion celebrates future with newly renovated facilities WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM

MONDAY OCTOBER 5, 2020

Among those enjoying her new space at the newly renovated Marion City Hall is Charis Kempen, the utility billing clerk. Kempen says the renovation of the building allows for better customer service. “The benefit is better customer service -- the ability to interact with customers more. Before, we didn’t have much space and this, we can actually show them diagrams especially when they come in and for the permit side and want to know if something is in our area or the ETJ, we can actually show them on a map now. Same with utility billing. I can actually break it down, show them their bill and let them know so more interaction helps out definitely,” said Kempen. Marion Police Chief Donald Crane says the new space for his officers next door to city hall also provides additional elbow room and the potential for growth.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Marion) -- The city of Marion is celebrating its future with the renovation of a pair of its municipal buildings. The city recently gathered to celebrate the grand re-opening of its City Hall. Sixty-five years after being built, the city has repurposed its city hall building by doing away with a portable building, renovating its existing city hall and giving the Marion Police Department its own place to call home. Marion Mayor Victor Contreras says a special committee was assigned to find ways to utilize its facilities while at the same time saving money for the city. “We wanted to get out of the portable because it was costing us well over $25,000 a year and that’s just money thrown away and I put a committee together to see what we could do with the two buildings. Our front lobby used to be real narrow and it just didn’t feel comfortable so we widened that and then we also put an office for the mayor in there also besides the city secretary, public works and then the utility clerk and the permitting clerk are in the front. The way that it started was the police department, that was my office and it was way too big for me and then the police were squeezed into that building. It was just kind of a puzzle, but it

worked out,” said Contreras. Contreras says switching things around at city hall and providing a much need upgrade in facilities were just the next steps toward planning for the future and delivering the best possible services that it an to its residents. “I didn’t like throwing money away. That to me was just throwing money away in a portable that we were renting. So, in five years, this will be paid and it’s less a year than we were paying for. For that other one (portable), it was $25,800. This is a $12,000 to $13,000 a year payment that we got an exceptional good rate. For the $65,000, it was 1.95 percent and so it’s about $3,300 interest for over a fiveyear period, but these are our buildings. That’s the key,” said Contreras.

“Well, we didn’t have our own spot for our evidence, and we are not so cramped up with everybody else. Later on, it will get some more renovation to it but it’s pretty nice now. We have room to grow,” said Crane. The newly renovated Marion City Hall is located at 303 S. Center St.

Truck shortage blamed for delay in pumpkins at local patch By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- No, there is not a pumpkin thief in Seguin. Instead, there has been a delay in delivery of pumpkins for Seguin’s annual pumpkin patch at First United Methodist Church. Barbara Winson, one of church coordinators, says First United is patiently awaiting the pumpkins which should have arrived on Saturday from an Indian reservation in New Mexico.

tradition, their entire focus these last few weeks has been on ways to ensure the proper guidelines for social distancing. She says never did they once think that the hiccup would be because of a truck shortage. “We did not anticipate (it). When she told me due to the hurricanes, we are having trouble getting trucks, I was like well that came out of the thin air to us,” said Winson.

“Our plans have changed as you know. COVID changes everything. The hurricane changed everything and so at the latest, we are hoping that the pumpkins will be there by Wednesday. Please as you drive by, look every day. They could be here Monday afternoon, Tuesday, Wednesday. We are just up in the air, but we are going to have one. It’s going to be done by CDC guidelines and as safely as possible. Don’t forget your mask. Don’t forget about social distancing. We want you to come,” said Winson.

While they understand the challenges and obstacles for the delivery of the pumpkins, Winson says she is still hopeful that the pumpkins will arrive very soon.

In fact, Winson says church volunteers who have been working around the clock to help make this happen were kind of surprised by the news. She says at first, the church was contemplating on whether to even have the pumpkin patch because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then after agreeing to move forward with

Although empty with pumpkins, the lawn at First United Methodist Church is said to be filled and ready with pallets and backdrops for those precious pumpkin patch photos. Once delivered, the patch will be open daily through Oct. 31. First United Methodist Church is located at 710 N. Austin St.

“(It’s) a day and a half drive and the drivers have to a 10-hour break, so we are hanging tight day by day. They will be here and I’m saying that with a lick and a promise but drive by, if you see us open, stop,” said Winson.

Early turnovers, slow start doom Matadors in road loss to New Braunels New Braunfels used a nine-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Driggers to Jacob Redding and a Nick Cruz PAT to draw first blood with 5:05 left in the first quarter. An interception and fumble recovery by Unicorns safety Kendrick Thompson led to two more touchdowns in the first half as Ryker Purdy punctated scoring drives of 54 and 48 yards with short runs to put Seguin in a 21-0 hole by the 8:51 mark of the second period.

(New Braunfels) - Three turnovers in the first half and an early 21-0 deficit proved too much for Seguin to overcome as New Braunfels handed the Matadors a 35-20 loss in the 108th Guadalupe River Bowl Friday evening at Unicorn Stadium. The Unicorns have won the last seven meetings between the program and 13 of the last 14 to build a 67-38-3 lead in the all-time series.

The Matadors had a chance to put points on the board just before halftime when Garrett Stiles lined up for a 39-yard field goal, but the snap sailed high over Stiles’ head as time expired. After a scoreless third quarter by both teams, the Seguin offense found life in the fourth with three touchdowns. Purdy added scoring runs of one and 44 yards after the first two of those to keep the Matadors at bay, and the visitors were unable to recover any

of their onside kick attempts to have a chance to pull within one score.

Seguin quarterback Micah Rodriguez found Alex Concepcion with an 11-yard touchdown pass to cap a nine play, 70-yard drive with 10:23 left in the fourth period, but a missed PAT by Stiles left the score 21-6. Fullback Michael Martinez punched it in from a yard out to punctuate a nine play, 74 yard drive with 4:43 to play. Seguin’s two-point coversion attempt failed, and New Braunfels still led 28-6. Rodriguez delivered a perfect throw to Tristan Moreno streaking behind the secondary for a 40yard touchdown with 2:30 left. Concepcion took a pitch on a misdirection play and hit Rodriguez for the two-point conversion to produce the final margin. Purdy broke loose for what appeared to be a 65-yard touchdown run on the

final New Braunfels possession, but the junior running-back was flagged for taunting before he crossed the goal line. The Unicorns kneeled down to run out the clock after the penalty was marked off.

“You’ve got to give New Braunfels credit,” Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. “They’re a good football team, and when you play good football teams, you can’t make mistakes like that. But credit to our guys. They came out in the second half and fought their tails off, and they just seemed more relaxed and executed better.” Rodriguez completed 30 of his 36 passing attempts for 285 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Moreno led the receivers with 97 yards and one score on six catches. Concepcion pulled in nine receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. Marques Washington ran for 72 yards on 18 carries and totaled 70 receiving yards on nine catches.

Freshman defensive tackle Evrin Contreras recovered a fumble for Seguin’s only take-away. The Matador defense had no answer for Purdy, who finished the night with 265 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries. Driggers went 13-21 through the air for 134 yards and a score. “They made some plays,” Bush said of Purdy and teammates. “We were in position, they made some plays and broke some tackles, but playing good teams, they’re going to do that. They had a pretty good size advantage up front. They established the line of scrimmage most of the night, but again, our guys were playing their tails off, and just proud of the way they finished.” Seguin heads into the bye week with a 1-1 record, while New Braunfels is 2-0 to start the season. The Matadors wrap up non-district play on Thursday, Oct. 15 with a home game against Kerrville-Tivy.
