I know there are still over 400 pending cases so that’s 400 cases that are not even on this list -- that haven’t been assigned to one of these jurisdictions. I talked to the state last week or actually yesterday (Monday) and they said that they are trying to get to those counties that have high number of pending cases. The higher ups at the state want those to be vetted a little bit quicker and we are one of the counties that has one of the higher pending cases that need to be vetted faster,” said Pinder. In his update to the commissioner’s court, Pinder was asked about the status of school districts across the county. Pinder says while there have been cases at all the districts, the numbers have either been low or manageable. See COVID, page 3

Guadalupe County shows its support in the fight against drugs By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Guadalupe County is applauding the efforts of one local organization who is still pushing the fight against drugs especially among our youth. County commissioners this week signed a proclamation recognizing Oct. 23-31 as 2020 Red Ribbon Week in Guadalupe County. The proclamation was brought to their
Representing the group was Unit Commander Dina Dillon and Private Noah Gall, a local sixth grader. Dillon says many may recall the wearing of red ribbons in schools as a unified stand against drugs and violence.
“Of course, the reason of why we are here is because of Kiki Camarena. He was a Marine and DEA agent. While he was being a DEA agent, he was kidnapped, tortured and murdered and because of that back in the 80s, Nancy Regan started the Red Ribbon Week in honor of him and his biggest thing was to keep drugs off of the streets,” said Dillon.
Dillon says that red ribbon remains a symbol commemorating the work of a fallen drug enforcement officer who efforts are still recognized today.
This year, Dillon says the group will again celebrate Red Ribbon Week with a special fundraiser in early November. See RED RIBBON, page 3

The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court on Tuesday presented a proclamation to the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines recognizing October 23-31, 2020 as Red Ribbon Week in Guadalupe County. Those present were Dina Dillon, unit commander for the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines, and Private Noah Gall, a sixth grader, who was recruited in January 2020. The pair also talked about a bike run benefiting local veteran organizations in November. Courtesy photo.

RED RIBBON, continued from page 2 “We are actually doing a Ride To Be Drug Free, a Kiki Camarena Run
and it’s not running but driving a motorcycle so we have incorporated all of our veterans organizations here in town – the American Legion,
Geronimo VFW, McQueeney VFW and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). So together, we are working together having a fundraiser on Nov. 7 and invite you guys to come out and attend and of course, there’s a raffle and a silent auction and all sorts of fun things,” said Dillon. Dillon says this year, the group will be looking for the community’s support more than ever. “It’s in honor of Kiki but yet, we are helping each other by raising money. All of the veterans organizations have been hit pretty hard over COVID with their buildings that they have to pay, rent and everything else, lights so this is our way of giving back to them so part of monies that we raise, we’ll donate to those organizations,” said Dillon. A hamburger plate sale will also be available that day. Plates are $8 each. Raffle prizes will also be up for grabs. Prizes include a date night special featuring a stay at the Hampton Inn in Seguin along with a $25 gift card to Chilis and flower bouquet from Dietz Flower Shop. Raffle tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from Dillon or by visiting Jill Nash at First Commercial Bank. The motorcycle run-ride is set for Saturday, Nov. 7 at the American Legion located at 618 E. Kingsbury. Registration gets underway at 9 a.m. Entry is $20 for motorcycle, vehicle driver and $10 for each additional rider.
County applauds efforts of area school districts COVID, continued from page 1 “The school districts, they are doing well. I know like the Schertz-Cibolo ISD, they have a handful of cases over there. They reported some additional ones last week but for the most part, I think that everybody is wearing their mask in the schools. The students are following the rules. I know working some of the football games, I’ve seen – there’s no issue with compliance. Every once in a while, you’ll have someone who has their mask down because they’ve been eating or something and the administrator just walks up and points at their face. They are doing a pretty good job at the school districts,” said Pinder. Pinder says precautionary measures such as
temperature checks also continue at most if not all schools in the county. “I know, for instance, Mrs. Russell over there has purchased the kiosk that we are also looking at purchasing and before you are allowed to enter the school, you have to get your face scanned and it tells you if you have a temperature or not and if you do not have a temperature, you are allowed entry into the school and everybody who comes to the campus has to do that. I think Seguin also has purchased those, but I haven’t heard anything from Schertz, Cibolo or Marion,” said Pinder. Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher also applauded the school districts for doing their part to
ensure the safety of all students and staff. “It seems like the school districts are communicating well like you said with the parents and the public with the cases they do have. A lot of the schools transition(ed) and brought a lot of the kids back and we haven’t seen the large increase that everybody expected early on. So, I think it’s a real testament to how everybody is being a team player and doing what they can. Everything is going really well considering all things,” said Kutscher. County officials say although the confirmed positive numbers and hospitalizations remain low, personal responsibility in eliminating the virus is still being encouraged.

(Undated) -- You may want to rethink any upcoming trips south of the border. Mexico announced it is extending land border restrictions until November 21st. They have been in place since March to slow the spread of the coronavirus. It limits all non-essential travel across the border, and the U.S. has a similar agreement in place with Canada. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico said “the ups and downs in the outbreaks and flare-ups” of the illness forced them to put in another extension.
New Jersey Governor Advises Residents Not To Travel
(Trenton, NJ) -- New Jersey’s governor is urging residents not to leave the state as coronavirus cases spike again. Phil Murphy says he’s even considering targeted shutdowns,
as Connecticut and New York have done. But he suggested that still won’t cure the problem. The state had contained the virus but now infections have doubled over the last month. Health officials say an average of more than 900 people are testing positive each day.
Wisconsin Judge Upholds COVID Restrictions On Indoor Dining
(Madison, WI) -- Coronavirus restrictions are back on in Wisconsin. A judge upheld a state order that limits public gatherings to 25-percent, including at bars and restaurants. Governor Tony Evers called it a “critically important ruling” to help prevent the virus from spreading. He said the “crisis is urgent” and pleaded for residents to stay home. The order continues through November 6th but could be extended.
Study: Babies Can Consume Over A Million Microplastic Particles A Day
(Undated) -- It looks like babies may be consuming over a million particles of microplastics a day. A new study in Nature Food found that plastic baby bottles can release microplastics when they are used to prepare formula. However, the researchers behind the study are saying this shouldn’t alarm parents. There isn’t enough research to say there are health risks brought on by consuming microplastics.
