City announces plans for Holiday Stroll Parade

Lighted Parade to be moved to Starcke Park East By Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The COVID-19 pandemic is not going to stop the city of Seguin from celebrating the holidays this year. City staff unveiled the officials plans for two popular events -- the Lighted Holiday Stroll Parade and the Cocoa Sip-N-Stroll. Both celebrations will be significantly modified to keep the community safe. Parks Director Jack Jones explained the plan during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin City Council. Jones says the holiday displays will not be parading, instead they will be stationary in Starcke Park and it’s the community that will be driving by paradestyle to see the holiday lights. “We put this plan together for a stationary parade so basically, instead of the parade rolling down the street and passing all

the spectators like in the past, the parade is going to be parked and the spectators are going to be in their vehicles passing by the parade so we put together a plan here for it to happen in Max Starcke Park East,” said Jones. Moving the event to Starcke Park

provides more room for parade entries, and for the parade watchers that will be driving by safely in their cars. “You come under the bridge and will enter Starcke Park East by Little League Fields and we’ve enough room for approximately

you the got 40-

50 floats of cars and floats all lit up. We’ve got a couple of special locations for the Seguin High School Band and we’ve talked to them and they’ve indicated through an email that the superintendent’s leadership team is excited about this plan and is well received. We’re also talking to the Navarro High School Band and have a place for them in between the Little League fields and so we are still talking to them about coming out but it’s a parade but it’s not going to be a moving parade,” said Jones. Seguin Mayor Don Keil has chosen they men and women of the Seguin Police Department to serve as the parade marshals this year. Jones says they looked at how they could incorporate that into the stationary parade, and he says they have a good plan in place. See PARADE, page 2

Fall Trade Days to return this weekend to Downtown Seguin WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM

THURSDAY OCTOBER 22, 2020

Special by Kyle Kramm, director of Seguin Main Street and CVB

(Seguin) -- Every fall the Seguin Main Street hosts its Fall Trade Days held in conjunction with Seguin’s Pecan Fest. Due to COVID-19, much of the traditional Pecan Fest events will not be occurring, but Trade Days will be returning with some additional safety precautions. “While we are sadden that much of Pecan Fest will not be able to occur, like the Hats Off to Juan Seguin Pub Crawl, historic property tours and more; we are extremely glad that we were able to develop a plan to host the Fall Trade Days safely,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director, “We will have a variety of vendors set up around Central Park selling home goods, yard décor, jewelry, and more. Additionally, some of our pecan vendors will be returning to Trade Days.”

wet paint sale featuring Seguin landmarks painted the day before. Additionally, the public can vote on their favorite piece. The artwork will be set up in front of their building at 104 South Austin Street. If you do not get your fill of shopping at the downtown vendors and merchants, be sure to head to the Big Red Barn for even more vendors. Once done with shopping stick around for the antique tractor pull at the barn.

On Saturday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., over 60 vendors will be set up around Central Park. This is about half the number of vendors that normally are in Central Park. The reduction in vendors will allow for additional spacing between the vendors. In addition to the reduction in the number of vendors, other safety precautions include hand sanitizer

stations placed throughout the area, all vendors and guests will need to wear masks, all food will need to be consumed while stationary in the dining area, one family unit per picnic table, increased sanitization of common spaces and one customer inside each vendor space. In addition to the vendors, the Seguin Art League will have a

In the evening, the fun continues with a drive in concert at Teatro de Artes featuring Santiago Jimenez Jr and Conjunto Cats. Purchase tickets at https://vivaseguin. eventbrite.com. Plan on coming out to enjoy the fall weather in downtown and having some safe, family fun. We look forward to hosting the normal big Pecan Fest celebration in October 2021. Pandemic forces modifications to holiday events

PARADE continued from page 1

“The parade route will be coming, of course by the Little League Fields and around just like the traffic flow is today but at the end, we will have real police cars on both sides of the road lit up. Towards the end will be the city council float. We’ll have that decorated like we’ve always had in the past and at the very end will be Santa Clause and hopefully, (Fire) Chief (Dale) Skinner’s old fire truck,” said Jones. Jones says their plan for the holiday parade also includes a safe route for people to get into the park. Instead of the normal entry points, cars will be diverted to the backside entry on the west side of the park and they will then come up River Road to access the stationary displays on the east side of Starcke Park. “We don’t know if we are going to

get 100 cars or 1,000 cars coming through so basically, we are going to have folks coming down South Austin Street and turning onto Nelda Street heading west past the Fairgrounds and then turning south on Boenig Street and then going through Starcke Park West through the back gate -- going all the way down to where we can stage people. If we hit a lot of traffic, you can stage them right here and then we can release cars under the bridge -- 20 or so or 30 or so and let them go through. We are worried about stacking up vehicles on South Austin Street,” said Jones.

The Lighted Holiday Stroll Parade will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m.on Thursday, December 3 in Max Starcke Park. Jones says they are excited to be able to offer this parade as a safer alternative this year. While the parade will go on, the

popular Cocoa Sip-N-Stroll event, which normally occurs on the Friday after the Holiday Stroll Parade, will not happen this year -- at least not like it has in the past. Main Street and CVB Director Kyle Kramm says they just couldn’t find a way to safely host the event, which brings thousands of people to downtown Seguin. He says they will still sell mugs and cocoa can still be found on Friday, December 4, but it will be done on a much smaller scale this year.

“We are still moving forward with the mugs, the Sip N Stroll mugs which they will go on sale this Saturday at Trade Days in Central Park and they will be on sale from now until basically Christmas. But instead of doing one big night of hot cocoa with 40 different stores, offering hot cocoa throughout downtown, we are going to have Cocoa Open Houses every weekend where

four or five businesses will be having hot cocoa as a way to kind of still encourage people to come and still shop at our downtown businesses and that they can still come down and find some hot cocoa. It’s just not going to find the 40 different recipes and this will allow the stores to better manage crowds when they open,” said Kramm. The Seguin City Council, by consensus, gave its blessing to staff’s plans. That means families can now start making plans to add those activities to their 2020 holiday calendar. The pandemic wiped out Fourth of July events in Seguin this year, and some feared the same would occur during the holiday season, but barring some additional state or federal COVID-19 restrictions, folks will be able to participate in those events in just a few weeks.

City Council honors local priest

THURSDAY OCTOBER 22, 2020

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- It’s not everyday that you hear a priest call himself a liar, but that’s exactly what happened during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin City Council. Father Greg Nevlud, of St. James Catholic Church, made the admission, but quickly explained why his lie was for a good cause. He told his friend Father Dennis Darilek, who recently retired from St. James, that he needed to attend Tuesday’s night council meeting. It was a false pre-tense, indeed, but it was all an attempt to honor Father Dennis for his many years of service to the church and to Seguin. “He always said that he was going to nominate me to get a volunteer award from the city for all the work that I do around the community so I told him that tonight at 5:30 p.m., the city was going to honor me. That is the farthest thing from the truth. We are

here tonight because Mayor Don Keil would like to make a presentation to my brother priest Dennis Darilek,” said Nevlud.

proclaiming Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020 as Father Dennis Darilek Day in the city of Seguin and hereby wish him God’s choicest blessing,” said Keil.

Father Greg says the parish and the community had plans in honor Father Dennis earlier this year, but COVID-19 made that an impossibility.

Father Dennis said he was thankful for his many friends in Seguin and for his opportunity to serve here. “It’s been a great honor serving here and knowing you and working with you and I will miss all of you. I will not miss the paperwork at all but I will miss my brother, the parish, and all of you so keep me in your prayer. My mom went to the Lord on my birthday Sept. 3. She almost made 100 but she’s watching after me so God bless you. I’ll be back now and then for different things so thank you, thank you so much,” said Darilek. November 22 will be Father Dennis Day in Seguin. Father Greg says the parish has plans to host a retirement reception for Father Dennis after each service that day.

“He was really looking forward to his last six months at St. James. We were going to celebrate him like he’s never been celebrated before and then COVID happened and nothing happened,” said Nevlud. Seguin Mayor Don Keil issued a proclamation honoring Father Dennis and said that Father Dennis Day in Seguin would be celebrated next month. “After 16 years of service to this wonderful community of Seguin, Father Dennis announced his retirement on July 1, 2020 so now therefore, I Don Keil, Mayor of Seguin, have the honor of

Bulldogs host Aggies for second place in 14-3A-Division I, Thursday game to air on KWED who has now topped 1,000 rushing yards in consecutive seasons. He ran for 1,710 yards and 15 touchdowns to earn First Team All-District accolades as a sophomore, and enters Thursday with 1,188 yards rushing yards, 266 receiving yards, and 14 total TDs seven games into his junior year.

(Marion) - Marion comes off the bye week with a chance to claim sole possession of second place in the District 14-3A-Division I football standings when the Poteet Aggies visit Veterans Stadium on Thursday. Both teams are 2-1 in district play with losses to first-place Jourdanton. The Bulldogs are 4-3 overall in Ryne Miller’s third season as head coach after a hardfought 41-34 win in Cotulla on Oct. 9.

The visiting Aggies are 5-2 in head coach Darby House’s third season after blowing out San Antonio-Cole 56-13 last Friday. Poteet’s program has progressed rapidly during House’s tenure, improving from 0-10 two years ago to 3-8 with a playoff berth last year in the 4A Division II ranks, to being in position to clinch a winning record in 2020. The Aggies’ most accomplished offensive weapon is junior running-back Ernest Davila,

for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Samuel Montoya has coralled a team-best four TD catches.

Poteet balances that rushing attack with sophomore quarterback Alexander Lockamy (56%, 1,138 yds., 8 TD, 6 Int.) throwing to talented receivers like Martin Ibarra (18 rec., 391 yds., 5 TD) and Darrin Garcia (16 rec., 299 yds., 2 TD).

Both defenses have All-District honorees in every position group. For Marion, that list includes defensive linemen Montoya (13 TFL, 3 sacks, 2 FR, 3 FF), Ronnie Winbush (5 sacks), and Bode Walters, linebackers Jayden Williams (17 TFL, 9 sacks) and Willie Davis (3 sacks), and defensive backs Dillon Blakely, Bryce Gonyer, and Cameron Kistner. Sophomore linebacker Kross Kelso leads the Bulldogs with 86 tackles (14 TFL) and has collected two interceptions.

Marion counters with dual-threat junior quarterback Tanner Beakley, who accounted for five total touchdowns in the win over Cotulla two weeks ago. Beakley has completed 53 percent of his passes for 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns while running for 247 yards and five scores.

Poteet’s top defensive players include rush ends Joe Davila (48 tackles, 7 TFL, 3 sacks) and Cutter Blagg (2 sacks), linebackers Julian Moya (49 tackles, 9 TFL) and Diego Garza, and cornerback Giovani Magirl. The Aggies have limited opponents to an average of 17.6 points per game.

Junior running-back Aden Rackley leads Marion in rushing with 339 yards, and comes off his best game of the season - a 106-yard outing with a TD against Cotulla. Sophomore Dominic Castellanos enters Thursday with a team-high 24 receptions

The Marion - Poteet game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Kickoff at Veterans Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. Pregame coverage, including the Bulldog Report with Coach Miller, starts at 7 p.m.

Purdue Pharma Hit In Settlement Involving Opioid Epidemic

(Washington, DC) -- The Justice Department is announcing a settlement with a major pharmaceutical company involved in the opioid epidemic. Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said Purdue Pharma has agreed to plead guilty to three federal criminal charges and will pay roughly eight billion dollars in fines. Rosen noted Purdue is in bankruptcy during a news briefing. (New York, NY) -- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says plans are being made for what will happen next, should a potential COVID-19 vaccine be successfully developed. He says the city must have a sufficient supply and the ability to provide the vaccine for free before proceeding with phase one, which would focus on the most vulnerable within the population. Phase two would then focus on vaccinating the general public, largely through the city’s public health infrastructure, and at sites like hospitals, clinics, community centers, and schools. Officials made comparisons to the city’s wide-spread vaccine roll out that followed the development of a Smallpox vaccine in the late 1940s.

Trump Campaign Sends Warning To Medical Marijuana Group

(Jackson, MS) -- The Trump campaign is telling a medical marijuana group to stop using the President’s name in its efforts to get Mississippi voters to approve a ballot initiative. The campaign has sent Mississippians for Compassionate Care a cease and desist letter. It says the group has been sending out mailers urging voters to “join President Trump” in supporting Initiative 65. But, the Trump campaign says the President has never indicated that he’s in favor of the initiative or the legalization of medical marijuana in Mississippi at all.

Health Experts: Cold, Dry Air, Dry Breathing Tracts Raise Coronavirus Danger

(Undated) -- Health experts say the coming cold months will make the coronavirus more dangerous. Colder temperatures create a better environment for the virus to stay alive, and so does the lower humidity colder weather brings. Studies show cold, dry air helps the coronavirus to spread, and dry air passages make it harder for mucus to remove the virus. In addition, spending most of the time indoors means people won’t be able to socially distance the way they could when spending more time outside during the warm weather.
