Local man runs unopposed in Halloween weekend in Seguin Seguin City Council race helping to introduce Rea, sharing more about his willingness to serve the constituents of District One.

Joe Rea

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- When they head to the polls, voters in Seguin City Council District One will find themselves checking off the box in at least one uncontested race. Facing no opponent during the Nov. 3 General Election, Joe Rea has essentially landed the position on the city council. The Seguin Daily News is

Rea is retired from the Union Pacific Railroad. Throughout his years with the railroad, Rea says he’s moved up the ranks working various positions including dispatcher, brakeman, engineer and conductor. He says he is honored for his time on the railroad and for the opportunity to raise a family here in Seguin. “I moved to Seguin in June of 1999. I worked for the railroad for 42 years. I have three children. All of them graduated from Seguin High School and all of them attended the University of Texas in Austin and I’m proud to say that they all graduated from UT Austin and I’m a single parent and I

live in District 1 and I’ve been here 21 years,” said Rea. Rea says as one of the newest council members, he will strive to make sure that his district gets “its fair share of infrastructure funds for improvements, street maintenance and repairs, pedestrian sidewalks, and safe traffic flow to and from schools.”

He says with the arrival of COVID-19, “ the city’s management of funds and resources require meticulous planning and review of priorities for the best utilization of public funds.” Rea says he believes that with his experience, he acquires the skills and discipline necessary to serve as a city councilman. GRMC Board of Managers extends kudos to hospital staff for top awards, new projects plus recruitment during pandemic year By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

how many COVID tests they did but they did quite a number of COVIDtests,” said Dr. Lee.

(Seguin) -- Earlier this week, the GRMC Board of Managers applauded the individual contributions of hospital employees throughout this COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Lee says to top it off, the hospital was also able to welcome a new piece of equipment designed to improve the quality of care, and to help save lives.

Today, those same leaders are applauding the hospital for honors and projects that often times flew under the radar while most of were in quarantine.

“We added another surgical robot this year to the hospital. Now, we have two. They are not cheap. They are $2.5 million. We have 68 new Striker beds. Striker is a very well known related company. So that will be brand new beds on medical and surgical floor, some in OB. We will have a new 3D x-ray. We are one of the only hospitals in the area -- I don’t think even anybody in San Antonio has this technology so that’s going to be put in the next few months. That’s for radiology,” said Dr. Lee.

Dr. James Lee, board chairman for Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, says even under the demands of treating COVID-19 patients, the hospital managed to pick up some national recognition for its operation. “Still during the pandemic, the hospital was honored by Modern Healthcare as one of the Top 25 medical health facilities in the nation. It’s a pretty good honor. That was employees evaluating the hospital. Fay Bennett (vice president of employee services) put in a lot of work on that also. Last year, we were No. 52. They only tell you the Top 100 and so, we were No. 25 out of 4,800 hospitals or health related facilities in the nation. About 1,000 competed for this honor,” said Dr. Lee. Being named one of the top 25 healthcare facilities in the nation by Modern Healthcare, however, was not the only recognition for the GRMC. Dr. Lee says the hospital managed to pull in other notable accomplishments. “The Women’s Choice Award placed GRMC in the Top four percent in the nation for patient safety. Also, Leap Frog, another health rating organism gave GRMC an A rating. That’s the highest you can get, of course, for safety. That means you had safe

surgical practices, low complications, low infections. Our hospital was recognized for outstanding patient experience and that’s the patient’s evaluating the hospital after they’ve been in the hospital. This is the third year in a row that we have had outstanding patient experience. They put us in the Top 10 percent of all the hospitals. Five Star Awards, that’s the highest you can get. That varies from year to year. Some areas are rated good, excellent on some years. This year, we had our highest rating in vaginal deliveries but that has been five years in a row. Colon rectal surgery, heart failure, and hysterectomies, those all received Five Star this year,” said Dr. Lee.

Dr. Lee says this work and these accomplishments by the hospital are not going unnoticed especially when it comes to attracting new physicians to its Dr. Lee says all the while, the hospital medical community. still managed to continue these last few months by handling a few new projects “Recruiting still goes on at our hospital. and acquisitions. We’ve added Dr. (John) White who is a urologist. Dr. Andrew Cichowski who is “We will be opening a new a neurologist and outstanding. UNOPPOSED, continued from page 1

“Aside from the infrastructure and with my experience on the railroad, one of the biggest complaints that I have gotten from the constituents not only in my district but other districts is that the trains that go through Seguin -- we have 30-35 trains in a 24 hour period that go from San Antonio to Houston back and forth and the loud whistle of the train at all hours of the day and night, it’s really annoying and I would hope to implement a city ordinance to establish quiet zones for the city of Seguin for the trains that go through Seguin (so they) won’t blow the horn. This city ordinance is already implemented in San Marcos and New

Braunfels and it works great. The people who live close to the railroad tracks and people that even live a little farther, they say they hear the train all the time so I would like to see if I can (implement) a city ordinance and establish quiet zones. People will be a lot happier and can sleep at night,” said Rea.

Rea says he looks forward to collaborating with city staff, administrators, and other council members to “brainstorm, create and share possible solutions to the problems faced by the city of Seguin.” He says it will be even more important to work

directly with the residents themselves.

“I’m new at this and I hope that I can communicate with my constituents and hear from them and see what their issues are. If they can bring it to my attention because like I said, I’m new at this but anything they can bring to my attention, I hope I can work with them and sort out so of these issues,” said Rea. Voters in District 4 will also find only one choice for their city council representative. That’s because current Councilman Chris Rangel is also running unopposed during Tuesday’s Seguin City Council election.

serving as a bike medic during area events.

(Seguin) -- SERVPRO is looking for an outstanding first responder in the Guadalupe and Gonzales County areas. In appreciation of their service and sacrifice, the national cleanup and restoration company is seeking nominations for an all-expense paid trip to the 2020 SERVPRO First Responder Bowl in Dallas. Details of the game such as time and date are still unknown due to current COVID-19 conditions. However, SERVPRO officials say the event will happen.

Like Hill, first responders will be chosen from each of the service areas for the company’s 1,700 franchises with again, one exclusive first responder being chosen from the Guadalupe, Gonzales County area. The first responders to be honored include police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, correctional officers, search and rescue, dispatchers, security guards, federal agents, border patrol agents, military personnel who have specialized training and are the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency.

Michele Drake, SERVPRO sales and marketing representative, says as a title sponsor of the First Responder Bowl, the company is seeking nominations for outstanding first responders from the communities that it serves. “It’s an all-expense paid trip to the bowl. It includes airfare for two, tickets to the bowl game, hotel and meals as well and then they will be recognized at the bowl game,” said Drake. Drake says considerations for nominees are not exclusive. She says any first responder nominated will be considered for the trip to Dallas. “It’s really just to honor all the men and women that do this work in our community or really all

Drake says some examples could include, but are not limited to injured and back to work, lives save in career, extraordinary job performance etc. “In the past, we have had people

I don’t think that any of us take enough time out just to think about it and to thank them enough because they really are putting their lives on the line and right now, it’s such a difficult time that they are going beyond anything that is called of them,” said Drake.

The 2019 First Responder to be chosen was Brandon Hill, operations manager of Schertz EMS. Hill has worked over a decade as a fire fighter, paramedic and first responder in the San Antonio area. He was nominated for his volunteerism with the Bike MS planning committee and for

Early deficit, Canyon rushing attack too much for Seguin in district road loss

(New Braunfels) - Seguin trailed by three touchdowns twice and pulled within one score on four different occasions in the second half, but the Matadors ultimately came up short to New Braunfels-Canyon 49-41 in District 12-5A-Division I play Friday night at Cougar Stadium. Seguin quarteraback Micah Rodriguez threw five touchdown passes for the second straight week and finished 25-35 for 315 yards. Receiver Tristan Moreno estabslished career highs with 13 catches for 225 yards.

Those stellar performances weren’t enough to overcome Canyon’s bruising ground attack, which churned out 342 rushing yards and averaged 6.2 yards per carry. “We knew all week that was them, they were big, they had a big offensive line, and they were going to pound the ball, and they were going to be tough to stop,” Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. “And we knew coming in the game, the one thing we couldn’t do is get behind like that. We had to execute on offense, which once we finally got in a rhythm, we scored a bunch of touchdowns there in the second half.” Canyon used a 62-yard touchdown pass from Drew Berry to Jack Loos, the first of five rushing TDs by Micah Williford, and a 44-yard run by Berry to build a 20-0 lead by the 7:46 mark of the second quarter. Seguin’s first points came on a one-yard play-action pass from Rodriguez to Troy Falgout three minutes later to cap a 73-yard drive, and the 20-7 score held through halftime .See ROAD LOSS, page 5

The Matadors took the opening drive of the third quarter 60 yards in four plays and pulled within six points, 20-14, on a seven-yard run by Marques Washington and Garrett Stiles’ second successful PAT kick.

The Mats opened the fourth quarter with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Rodriguez to Kai Seidenberger at the end of an 80-yard drive, a failed twopoint conversion try, an onside kick recovery, and a 10-yard scoring strike from Rodriguez to Washington to make it 35-27 with 8:35 left in the game.

Seguin forced one of only two Canyon punts on the next possession, but the Cougars’ Daniel Perez recovered a Rodriguez fumble at the Matadors’ 23-yard line to set up the first of two more Williford touchdowns in the third period. Canyon led 35-14 going into the fourth quarter. “The turnover was huge,” Bush said. “That kind of killed our momentum. We come out and score quickly to start the second half, and then we hold them and get the ball with a chance to go tie the game for the first time. That turnover was unfortunate. It gave the

Canyon recovered onside kicks and added touchdown runs of 16 and 25 yards by Williford after th Washington score and a six-yard pass from Rodriguez to Moreno with 2:56 left to keep Seguin at bay. Rodriguez connected with Seidenberger from five yards out to make it 49-41 with less than a minute remaining, but Canyon controlled another onside kick and ran out the clock. “I’m proud of the guys, the way they fought back, but give credit to Canyon,” Bush said. “They executed well tonight. We knew

it was going to be a game of execution. They executed for four quarters. We executed for about almost three quarters.”

Washington scored a rushing and receiving touchdown for the second straight game. He finished with 70 yards on 12 carries. Seidenberger’s two TD receptions were part of a four-catch, 51-yard night, and Falgout’s touchdown was his first as a Matador.
