Two killed during multi-vehicle crash (Seguin) – A multivehicle collision on State Highway 46 has claimed the lives of two drivers. Seguin Police say the accident was reported just before 1 a.m. Sunday at Hwy. 46 and Cordova Road. Upon arrival, officers say they observed a Chrysler 300 engulfed in flames and a Jeep Cherokee with extensive damage from the collision. Shortly after the collision, they say two other vehicles struck debris from the involved vehicles and the drivers were evaluated by Seguin EMS.
Further investigation revealed that while the Jeep Cherokee was traveling southbound on State Highway 46 N, it veered into northbound traffic striking the Chrysler 300 head on. Drivers of both vehicles, Natalie Jean Gage-Avila, 23, New Braunfels and Marcus
Keshawn Harris, 37, of Luling were pronounced dead at the scene. An occupant of the additional vehicle involved was transported by Seguin EMS to a local hospital. That person remains in stable condition. Investigation into the accident continues.

Groups, volunteers prepare for Sunday’s holiday meal Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The Seguin community is reminded that your Thanksgiving gathering doesn’t have to end on Thursday. In fact, individuals and families are encouraged to spend their Sunday as a community during the second annual “The Table -- A Community Thanksgiving Meal.” The barbecue chicken meal will be served for free from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum. The event is being hosted by several churches, groups and the city of Seguin. Dan Meyers, one of the many volunteers helping to prepare the 1,000 plates, says the meal is an invitation for anyone in Seguin. He says the gathering around food is truly a gift that has been prepared by a number of great folks here in Seguin. “I will say that it’s been a blessing to find organizations that have been willing to step up and help support The Table. HEB, one of the companies that donated, they donated a $1,000 in gift cards so we were able to take that and purchase some of the food that we are serving, and it’s not been a lot of large businesses but a lot of local small businesses and the hospital. The hospital in Seguin also was able to donate a significant amount toward the cost. Our goal as I said is to build community and make Seguin a place where people want to have their children grow up. That no one is alone or isolated. There is truly a family atmosphere. We want to make sure that’s in place in Seguin,” said Meyers. Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen is also thankful to those who have contributed and says the event is something that the community can enjoy together and take pride in. “We look forward to serving and enjoying the company of a wide range of residents - from the youngest
to those who are lifelong residents of Seguin. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors and help build unity in our community,” siad Dodgen. Extra hands are always welcome to help serve this year’s holiday meal. Meyers says those interested in rolling up their sleeves are encouraged to stop by. “Certainly, I think the more the merrier. We will offer training. Our church is meeting there in the morning for worship and then immediately after worship service at 11:30 is when we basically assign positions for volunteers. So, we will do a quick training and assignments and then the leadership there will place people in their positions, so everybody is ready to go, and we get started at 1 o’clock,” said Meyers. In addition to the meal, there will be activities for kids. No registration is required. The Seguin Coliseum is located at 950 S. Austin St.
Cost of Texas Thanksgiving dinner up slightly (Texas) -- That meal that hits the table this Thursday will be hitting wallets just a tad bit harder this year. The average cost of a classic Thanksgiving dinner in Texas is slightly more expensive than a year ago, according to Farm Bureau’s annual price survey. The average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving feast for 10 in Texas is $61.89 or $6.19 per person. The average cost of the same meal in Texas in 2022 was $58.81 or $5.88 per person. Cost, pg. 3

Cost, continued. The average cost of the classic meal in the U.S. this year is $61.17 or $6.12 per person. “High food prices remain a concern as inflation continues to impact families across Texas and the country,” Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening said. “Farmers and ranchers are working hard to meet growing demands for food while facing higher prices for fuel, seed, fertilizer and other expenses related to growing our food.” A Thanksgiving meal is about 25% higher than it was in 2019, which highlights the impact high supply costs and inflation have had on food prices since before the pandemic. The centerpiece on most Thanksgiving tables—the turkey— helped bring down the overall cost of dinner. The average U.S. price for a 16-pound turkey is $27.35. That is $1.71 per pound, down 5.6% from last year. The average price in Texas for a 16-pound turkey is $28.48 or $1.78 per pound. Farm Bureau volunteer shoppers checked prices Nov. 1-6, before most grocery store chains began featuring whole frozen turkeys at sharply lower prices. According to USDA Agricultural Marketing Service data, the average per-pound feature price for whole frozen turkeys declined further during the second week of November. Consumers who

have not yet purchased a turkey may find additional savings in the days leading up to Thanksgiving. “Traditionally, the turkey is the most expensive item on the Thanksgiving dinner table,” said American Farm Bureau Federation Senior Economist Veronica Nigh. “Turkey prices have fallen thanks to a sharp reduction in cases of avian influenza, which have allowed production to increase in time for the holiday.” The shopping list for Farm Bureau’s informal survey includes turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a veggie tray and pumpkin pie with whipped cream, all in quantities sufficient to serve a family of 10 with plenty of leftovers. In recognition of changes in Thanksgiving dinner traditions, the Farm Bureau price survey also includes boneless ham, Russet potatoes and frozen green beans, in

Prizes will be provided to those who complete the half marathon – checking into 13 businesses – and those who complete the full marathon – checking into 26 businesses. “There are four steps to participate in our Small Business Marathon,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB director, “First step is to download the app, then create an account in the app. Once you have an account, go to the challenges button and find the Small Business Marathon challenge. After you pull up the challenge, scroll through the list of businesses to find where you are and then select the business and hit the check-in button.”
an expanded menu. Adding these foods to the classic Thanksgiving menu increased the overall U.S. cost by $23.58, to $84.75. The average cost of the expanded Thanksgiving menu in Texas is $86.40. This year’s national average cost was calculated using 245 surveys completed with pricing data from all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Farm Bureau volunteer shoppers checked prices in person and online using grocery store apps and websites. They looked for the best possible prices without taking advantage of special promotional coupons or purchase deals. The AFBF Thanksgiving dinner survey was first conducted in 1986. The informal survey provides a record of comparative holiday meal costs over the years. Farm Bureau’s classic survey menu has remained unchanged since 1986 to allow for consistent price comparisons.
Over 80 local businesses are listed in the challenge and they are spread out over all of Seguin. There is no requirement to make a purchase at all the locations, just “check-in” through the app. Several businesses will also have Small Business Saturday swag to pass out – there are limited quantities so you will want to start the day early to get your swag. “We hope people will have fun going out to explore all the small businesses in Seguin,” said Kramm, “These small businesses provide so much for the community and between Small Business Saturday and the holidays, it is truly a time for the community to show them the support they deserve.” Small Business Saturday and the Small Business Marathon is on Saturday, November 25 and you can check-in at the stores during their regular business hours. After the marathon, Seguin Main Street staff will make contact with the “runners” to send them their prizes.

Holiday Season Bringing Viral Illnesses With It (Undated) -- The holiday season is bringing an increase of viral illnesses as people are getting ready for gatherings. While flu activity is still at low levels overall, an official with the CDC says there’s going to be many weeks of increasing flu activity and estimates that nearly 780-thousand people have had it so far this season. The director of the CDC says these are the months when flu likes to spread, especially since everyone travels for holidays. And while positive Covid causes seem to be plateauing, cases are expected to increase over the next couple of months. Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Cantaloupes In 15 States (Atlanta, GA) -- Federal health officials say a salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes has sickened people in at least 15 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 17 people have been hospitalized with the highest number illnesses reported in Arizona. The CDC is asking consumers to throw out whole cantaloupes sold between October 16th and October 23rd, and pre-cut Vinyard brand cantaloupe sold between October 30th and November 10th. Aldi brand whole and pre-cut cantaloupe sold between October 27th and October 31st should also be tossed out or returned to the store for a refund. NYC Chain Restaurants Must Post Added Sugars On Menus (New York, NY) -- Chain restaurants across New York City must now post added sugars on menus. Mayor Eric Adams signed legislation Friday, requiring restaurants with 15 or more locations to display added sugars. It aligns with previous steps the city has taken to highlight salt, calorie labeling, and trans-fat. The city is not banning items with added sugars but is hoping the information will help New Yorkers to make healthier decisions. The measure passed just weeks after the city launched a Health NYC initiative to increase life expectancy in New York. NY Gov. Hochul Signs Bill To Help Combat Opioid Crisis (Albany, NY) -- Governor Kathy Hochul has signed off on a brand-new law aimed at helping stop the opioid crisis in New York. It’s called Matthew’s Law, and expands access to fentanyl testing supplies by allowing them to be given out by pharmacists and health care professionals. The Office of Addiction Services and Supports has already started a new system that has led to the ordering of two-million fentanyl test strips.
