(Seguin) -- The bells are again ringing for this year's Salvation Army Kettle Campaign, and there's still time for you to volunteer. The Seguin Area Unit of the Salvation Army hosts the Kettle Campaign each holiday season. Salvation Army Board Member Tom Jones says they are again getting people signed up to ring the bells and man the kettles this holiday season. "We are back in front of Walmart. So, we are covering both doors. I think there are some days that we are actually covering three
doors but we've got both doors covered 9 to 9 daily except for Sunday and we are looking for volunteers. We want people to signup to ring the bells," said Jones. Jones says they've made it easy for people to volunteer this year. He says all you have to do is go online and choose a time that's convenient for you. "The way in which you can register is registertoring.com and you can go on that website and register to ring. There will be a time slot in which you can signup for or Giving, pg. 3

Blue Santa offering gift suggestions KWED Radio to host annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Blue Santa is giving you a couple of suggestions when buying a few toys and gifts for this year’s holiday season. Officer Sarah Chilutti of the Seguin Police Department has been working very closely with Blue Santa to filter through gift ideas for kids ages 0 to 12 years old. The gifts collected will, of course, go to local families throughout Guadalupe County. Chilutti says all sorts of toys are always a hit with children, but it’s the older ones, the kids ages 11-12, that folks sometimes have a bit of a problem shopping for. She says her suggestion this year is to look somewhere other than the toy aisle. “There’s a lot of different options for the older ones, arts and crafts stuff. For your little fashionistas, they can do the bracelets and all that fun stuff. I don’t have kiddos myself so that was something I struggled with too because I have no idea what’s in or what’s not anymore but if you go to a place especially locally like Walmart for example, they have a ton of toys and things for your older ones in their holiday aisle that I found made phenomenel gifts for the older kids so if you walk around and check that out, there’s a ton of really good options in those aisles and lots
of really cute stuff too because usually it’s the older girls that everyone struggles with. The boys, they kind of give them sports things or games but the girls a lot of people don’t know what to get,” said Chilutti. Of course, those wanting to leave the shopping up to others can always donate cash. Chilutti says Blue Santa elves can ensure that the perfect gifts get into the hands of these very deserving girls and boys. She adds that wrapping paper and other supplies, such as tape and batteries, are always a welcome choice in helping Blue Santa with his deliveries. Toy donations can be dropped off at various Blue Santa collection sites around town. Cash, checks, and toys will all be collected this Friday during the annual KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive. Community members, leaders, and business representatives will all be on hand to help manage your donations directly from your vehicles. The KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Donations can always be dropped off in advance in the front lobby of KWED Radio located at 609 E. Court St. Doors will be open today and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Friday until 2 p.m.

Yulefest Arts to host largest show EVER this Sunday Seguin’s Premiere Medispa
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- A premier place to shop during the holiday season returns to Seguin this weekend. The annual Yulefest Arts and Crafts Show will again be opening its doors this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum. The annual tradition is hosted every first weekend in December by the Seguin Art League Event Chairperson Karen Roberson says not only will Yulefest return, but it will be the largest arts and crafts show ever hosted by the local group. "We are looking forward to a successful year and the only thing that has really changed is new vendors and the most vendors we've ever had. We will have over 100 booths. We will have a full inside and about 30 to 35 booths outside," said Roberson. Despite its growth, Roberson says the quality of the show remains exclusive to a number of handmade items. "The most important thing for people to remember is that all of our vendors make handmade items. We are exclusively a handmade show and we stress this and we know that that makes it a really quality show," Roberson.
Giving, continued. if you jsut want to call our unit here in Seguin, you can call and they can also give you a time and set up a time to ring," said Jones. The bell ringing commitment is normally two hours, but Jones says there's some flexibility when it comes to getting signed up. He says often time large groups come together to share a block of time. He says those filled slots makes it easier to get each door covered. "We typically put them in two hour increments. However, as the chaplain at the hospital, I coordinate the bell ringing effort there at the hospital. We take one whole day and I encourage other companies to do the same thing. Take a whole day. What I have is I have so many employees at the hospital that I have broken it down to one hour. So, that means more people can ring the bells and we have a whole lot of fun. It's typically two hours but you can pretty well do it as you like," said Jones. Board Member Liz Hilsdof says ringing the bell doesn't just help to raise money in support of the

Salvation Army. She says it's also a lot of fun. She says it's meaningful volunteer work, and you never know what kind of donation will be dropped into those big red kettles each year. "You hear the heartfelt stories. You see the stuff. You see the smiles and then you just know it's all there and you find things in the kettle. We got a bracelet this last year that actually was from a woman that said 'for the Salvation Army Red Kettle. I would like for this gold bracelet to be used to feed the children at Christmas. Thank you! Merry Christmas!" said Hilsdof. Melissa Waters is the next executive director for the local Salvation Army Unit. She says the money collected by the Salvation Army stays here in this community. She says they use it in a number of ways to help people here in Seguin and Guadalupe County. She says it's all about finding a way to help as many people as possible, and it all starts with people showing up to help support the Kettle Campaign. "We give out those snack packs
out to the homeless and sometimes they are not really truly homeless. They are just hungry. They are between jobs. They have been in a domestic situation. There is some reason that they can't go home. There is some reason that they literally have no food. If we can give them something to kind of get them from point A to point B and community resources, it helps. It helps bridge that gap and that's really what we are about. We can't do everything and be all things to all people but what we can do is be that bridge to get them from where they are now to a better place," said Waters. Again, those who would like to volunteer for this year's Kettle Campaign can sign up online at registertoring.com. You can also signup by calling the office of the local unit at 830401-4872. Other opportunities to volunteer are also available by calling their office. The Seguin Kettle Campaign officially started the day after Thanksgiving and will run through the Christmas holiday weekend in Seguin.

Texas Lutheran Takes Care of Concordia (TX), 79-40 Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing
SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team opened a three-game week with a 79-40 win over future SCAC foe, Concordia (TX), on Monday at Memorial Gymnasium. The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 to match their best start since the 1987-88 season when then Texas Lutheran College was a member of the NAIA and started 6-1 under 2023 Texas Lutheran Wall of Honor inductee, Lana Urbanek. Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) led the Bulldogs with 22 points, one shy of matching her career-high, on 7-of-9 shooting. Mulkey would score all 22 points in the first half, only playing five minutes in the second half. The junior guard would knock down all three of her three point attempts and would add six rebounds, four assists, four steals, and a block - all team-highs. Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) would be the only other Bulldogs in double figures, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds. Davi’Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) scored eight points and tallied three steals. Irianna Rollins (Pflugerville/Connally), a transfer from Concordia, scored a careerhigh six points off the bench for the Bulldogs. Texas Lutheran opened the game on a 12-2 run and would lead 23-6 after the first quarter, shooting 62.6% in the opening period. Texas Lutheran replicated their efforts in the second quarter with swarming defense and efficient shooting, outpacing the Tornados 26-12 in the second to take a 48-18 halftime lead. Mulkey would score 13 points in the second quarter alone. Texas Lutheran would lead from wire-to-wire - leading by as many as 39

FDA Expands Cantaloupe Recall After More Illnesses (Atlanta, GA) -- U.S. health officials are expanding a cantaloupe recall after the number of salmonella cases more than doubles. The Centers for Disease Control says since last week, an additional 56 people were infected from the outbreak. In total, nearly one-hundred people in 32 states were sickened by the contaminated fruits, including two people who died. The FDA is recalling multiple brands including cantaloupes from Malichita, Vinyard, ALDI, Rudy, Freshness Guaranteed, and RaceTrac. NY Child Safety Law Takes Effect (New York, NY) -- New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a Youth Sports Safety Bill into law. Children’s sports programs and camps are now required to have an automated defibrillator on site in case of cardiac arest and at least one trained person at all children’s camps and sporting events, including practices. Any program with five or more teams must comply with the new law. The legislation was sponsored by Westchester Senator Shelley Mayer who says more than seven thousand children experience cardiac arrest emergencies every year. More Children Have Lead Poisoning From Applesauce Pouches (Undated) -- At least eighteen more children have been sickened by the recently recalled applesauce fruit pouches due to dangerous lead contamination. That brings the total number of affected children up to fifty-two. The FDA recalled cinnamon-flavored varieties that are sold under the WanaBana, Schnucks and Weis brands. The products are reportedly still on shelves in multiple states. Wisconsin Lawmakers Eye Mental Health Supports (Madison, WI) -- There will be a focus on mental health at the Wisconsin Capitol this week. A Senate committee will hold hearings on a series of plans from Republicans to expand mental health care in the state. One of the plans would start a pilot program to help first responders deal with the stress of their jobs, while another would change Wisconsin’s telehealth rules to allow out-of-state doctors to take-on clients in Wisconsin. There is also a plan to connect mental health professionals with police officers during mental health calls.
