Make plans now to give Drive set for this Friday

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Although the year 2020 has been a challenge, Seguin Radio KWED is giving everyone the opportunity to take care of each other this holiday season. The radio station is set to host its annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive this Friday morning outside its studios at 609 E. Court St. The pandemic has left families and businesses in need

and the radio station wants to ensure donations for Seguin’s food pantry The Christian Cupboard and for the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program. Needs this holiday season are even higher as families impacted by the pandemic work to do the best that they can. “We know the reason for the season,” says Darren Dunn, general manager and partner for KWED radio. “We know that Seguin is a generous place. We also know that we can count on you to again offer support to Blue Santa and to the Christian Cupboard.” Dunn says rest assure that this year’s food and toy drive will be complete with social distancing and the wearing of masks by those in the streets collecting your donations. Loose change, dollars, checks, food and toys will also be accepted. See BLUE SANTA page 3

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin has pulled the plug on what would have been its first Holiday Stroll Lighted Drive Thru Parade at Max Starcke Park. The drive thru experience was the city’s Plan B to hosting the traditional parade in downtown Seguin. The parade was set to take place this Thursday, Dec. 3. Jack Jones, the director of the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department, says the cancellation of the parade comes amidst an increase of COVID-19 cases in the area, as well as a sharp decline in the number of parade entries received.

“The timing of COVID, it has really impacted everybody and we are sad. We were looking forward to doing something. As parks and recreation folks, we want to have people come out and enjoy our parks and do special events and bring people “We just had only about 25 or so together. Parks and recreation is all committed to participating. We were about bringing people together and COVID has certainly hurt us in that hoping for around 50 which is of regard. Jones says the

city will host the holiday lighting and decor through the end of the year. “The Christmas trees are still going to be put up as they have in years past in Central Park. Actually, all slots, I believe, are full and those Christmas trees will go up on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 1. So after Dec. 1, folks can visit Central Park, socially distance and all that and check out Central Park. Central Park will be lit as it has in the past. All the lights in the tree will be on. The park will be decorated with Christmas trees. We encourage people on their own and given the rules of gathering to take the time to come and check out downtown and Central Park from Dec. 2 on,” said Jones. All parade entrants who had signedup have been notified about the cancellation.

Navarro ISD board vacancies up for discussion, possible appointments to be made during special meeting By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Geronimo) - The Navarro ISD is expected to fill a pair of board vacancies during tonight’s special meeting and workshop. Board members are scheduled to meet behind closed doors to review and discuss the applicants who have submitted their resumes for consideration. The board of trustees, earlier this month, opted to appoint the newest trustees rather than call for a special election or leave the seats vacant for the remainder of the term.

The first position available is that of newly elected trustee Katherine Ewald. Although publicly declining the seat just prior to appearing on the Nov. 3 ballot, Ewald finished the race as the top vote getter. She has since officially denied the seat. Trustees tonight will also look at finding a replacement for Board Vice President Rick Martin who died in October. No action will be taken behind closed doors. If a

decision is to be reached, then trustees will approve their appointments before the public in open session. During tonight’s workshop, trustees will also begin to discuss facilities planning and bond ballot requirements. The district’s growth has officials preparing for its future. The special meeting and workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. today in the Intermediate School Library.

Seguin Area Chamber to raffle off By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) - You don’t have to wait for Santa to bring you that 2020 Kubota RTV 500. That’s because the first ever gas-powered compact utility vehicle from Kubota is the take home prize for this Friday’s Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce holiday raffle. Elizabeth Sepulveda, the vice chair for the chamber’s board of directors, says the raffle is the latest in fundraising efforts for the chamber. She says the RTV raffle offers anyone in the community the chance to win a great prize. “The chamber also has been affected by COVID as far as having fundraisers and things of that sort and small businesses depend on the chamber to help us get through these tough times as far as providing seminars and things like that so what we have come up with is we have come up with a pretty much contactless raffle and so this raffle is for a 2020 Kubota RTV 500. We are selling tickets virtually. You can purchase them online. You can purchase them at your local Kubota dealer. You can purchase them at the chamber also I believe the executive board has them and other people that are part of the chamber,” said

Sepulveda. The best part of the raffle according to Sepulveda are the odds of winning. She says only a limited of amount of tickets will be sold for this Friday’s drawing. “The tickets are a really good deal. We are going to only have 1,500 tickets so the chances of winning are pretty good. You can buy one ticket for $30, two for $50 but the best

price is if you buy five tickets, it’s only $100 and like I said, we only have a limited quantity of tickets which is the 1,500 and the drawing is set for Dec. 4 so it’s a really good deal,” said Sepulveda. Sepulveda says an extra incentive is also included with the prize should it be used as part of a business. “If someone wins then they are Ag exempt. I believe Kubota, the dealer

here, is going to help them with that and they would not have to pay the taxes on that if they are going to be using it for business so if someone has a ranch or farm, this is a really good deal for them to purchase a ticket and hopefully win,” said Sepulveda. Elizabeth Engelhardt, a member of the chamber’s board of directors, says the raffle also supports local business. Engelhardt says the chamber is appreciative for the opportunity to showcase the products and services available at Ewald Kubota here in Seguin. “Our RTV was purchased locally from Ewald Kubota and it just goes back to the core ideology of the chamber in shopping local and so this is a way for us in light of the pandemic and not being able to have an in-person events and fundraisers. Everybody has been affected by the pandemic and the chamber needs the community’s support because they’ve always done a fantastic job of supporting our local businesses all these years,” said Engelhardt. The raffle drawing will be held Friday on Facebook Live. Tickets can be purchased online at seguinchamber. com or by stopping by the chamber office located at 116 N. Camp St.

live on the air just a few days before Christmas. The winning letter along with photos of the family will also be printed in the holiday edition of the Seguin Daily News. All letter entries must include the name of the person nominating the individual or family. This should also include their address and phone number. Letters without a name or phone number will not be considered for the contest. The concept behind this contest is to illustrate the true spirit of giving and sharing during the Christmas season. The winning letter will be selected by an anonymous panel of judges not employed at Seguin Radio KWED or the Seguin Daily News. All letters for this year’s contest must be submitted by 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18 at the radio station located at 609 E. Court St. The radio station is open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Individuals can use the drop off box in the front door to submit their letter.

(Seguin) -- The KWED Christmas Angel knows its going to need a little more help this year to make sure it finds a deserving family to bless this holiday season. In year’s past, only local kids have been invited to explain to the KWED Christmas Angel whey their families should be blessed with some holiday cash. This year, however, has proven to be an entirely different year, one that has become challenging for many. That’s why the Christmas Angel is allowing anyone in the community to nominate a family who could use the extra help. Again, all adults are invited to share a little bit about someone that they know could use some help. The letter can be handwritten or typed and should explain in a few words why this family deserves or is in need a cash prize of up to $500. As part of the contest, the winning letter will still read by those nominating the family or by someone at KWED

Media team sets out to collect food while social distancing

BLUE SANTA continued from page 1

For years, the radio station has teamed up with community VIPs in collecting donations from the street. Some of those morning volunteers have included members of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, the city of Seguin, Guadalupe County, the Seguin ISD, the Navarro ISD, Texas Lutheran University and Seguin Fire/ EMS Department. Sounds of the season will also be provided that morning by

a small and safe amount of members of the Seguin High School Band who have chosen to return and help with the collection of food and toys.

Wrapping items can be either new or simply last year’s leftovers.

The Blue Santa program accepts new gifts for children ages one day old to 12 years of age.

As for non-perishable food, items desired include beans, rice, pasta, cereal, peanut butter and soups. Other items such as clean egg cartons, recycled bags, laundry detergent and toiletries are also encouraged to be donated.

Small stocking stuffers are also encouraged for kids of all ages. In addition to toys and gifts, Blue Santa could also use new or used wrapping paper, scissors, tape and bows.

The KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4. Donations, however, will continue to be accepted throughout the day in the radio station lobby.

Rodriguez’s six TD passes spark Matadors to Black Friday rout of Lobos (Seguin) Micah Rodriguez threw a careerhigh six touchdown passes in the first half alone to fuel Seguin’s 49-7 dismantling of Kyle-Lehman in the final home game of the regular season Friday afternoon at Matador Stadium.

Box recovered a Lehman fumble that was punched out by John Michael Mata. Rodriguez and Moreno hooked up again for a 14yard score to put the Mats up 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. With a 60 percent chance of rain and thunderstoms in the forecast, but no sign of either when the game started, Seguin head coach Travis Bush decided to attack through the air early and often.

The Matadors only needed five offensive snaps to build a 21-0 lead in the game’s first four minutes and three seconds. Rodriguez was 5-5 for 144 yards and three touchdowns during that span.

“Not knowing what the weather was going to do, we came out and the weather was decent, so we had to win the first quarter,” Bush said. “We really wanted to try to be aggressive and see what we could do early in case the weather came in bad. In the second half, it got pretty cold and windy. So that was good to see. Proud of the guys the way they started. We built the lead there in the first half, and just kind of finished it off there in the second half.”

Tristan Moreno made a leaping catch for 33 yards on the senior quarterback’s first attempt, and Kai Seidenberger scampered into the end zone for 28 yard touchdown on the next Rodriguez throw. Moreno notched his first touchdown reception on a 39-yard sprint after a jet sweep pass from Rodriguez, and Alex Concepcion pulled in a 26yard TD catch in the back of the end zone after Ian

Micah Rodriguez (center) completed six touchdown passes, Tristan Moreno (left) pulled in three touchdown catches, and Marques Washington (right) scored on a 43-yard run to help Seguin win its home finale over Lehman on Friday. Rodriguez added a 13yard touchdown pass to Moreno and a 16-yard strike to Michael Martinez in the second quarter to give the Matadors a 42-0 cushion at halftime.

The second of those scores was set up by Kaleb McCann’s recovery of a fumbled Lehman punt return. Junior cornerback Chris Awshaw came up with first interception of the season in the second period as well.

Seguin only needed three plays to drive 75 yards on the opening possession of the third quarter, as Marques Washington broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run just one minute into the half. Rodriguez delivered a 15-yard completion to Seidenberger and a 17-yard strike to McCann before Washington’s run. Garrett Stiles nailed his seventh PAT kick in as many attempts to put the Mats up 49-0.

of the way our defense played. They came up with a goal-line stand early in the third that could have allowed them to get some momentum, and the big turnovers when we needed them.”

The Seguin defense denied Lehman’s first legitimate shot to break up the shutout when Mata and Awshaw stuffed running-back Robert Vasquez on a fourth-andone carry at the Matadors’ one-yard line inches shy of the first-down marker.

The playoff-bound Matadors are 6-2 overall, 5-1 in district play, and tied with New Braunfels-Canyon for second place in the 12-5A-Division I standings. Dripping Springs sits alone in first with a 6-0 district record.

The Lobos finally found the end zone on a 28-yard pass from Zach Casarez to Tanner Johnson with 2:48 left in the game.

Seguin can claim a share of the district title and secure the No. 2 playoff seed with a road win over Dripping Springs in the regular season finale this Friday. A loss would leave the Mats with the No. 3 seed. Friday’s game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday. com. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

“Lehman’s not a bad football team,” Bush said. “They played hard all day. They did a great job stopping the run, and they did some good things offensively, but proud

Seguin has forced at least three turnovers in each of the last three games - four apiece against McCollum and Buda-Johnson, and three more against Lehman.

Stingy defense, stout running game boost Panthers past Rattlers in regional semifinals (Giddings) - Navarro is headed to the fourth round of the 4A Division II playoffs for the third straight season and fourth time in five years after pulling away from Navasota for a 28-7 win in Friday’s Region IV semifinals at Buffalo Stadium in Giddings.

The Panthers’ Brody Whitson and Navasota’s Ja’Marion Frear traded early touchdown runs to forge a 7-7 deadlock at the end of the first quarter. After Navarro’s Brian Holmes forced a fumble on a sack in the second quarter, All-State safety Mark Wozniak scooped up the loose ball and returned it 68 yards up the right sideline for a touchdown to give the Panthers a 14-7 lead that would hold through halftime.

Whitson found the end zone again from 13 yards out in the third quarter to put Navarro up 21-7 after the defense turned back a Navasota scoring threat with a fourth-down

stop deep in Panthers territory.

Sebastian Sneed came up with an interception to set up the gameclinching drive. Navarro ran more than eight minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter and put the contest away with a short touchdown run by Zeke Campos late in the period. Sneed’s fourth PAT kick made it 28-7 with less than three minutes to play.” James Brinsley recovered a fumble to end Navasota’s final possession with under a minute to play. Navarro’s defense was stout on their own end of the field, holding the Rattlers without points in four different drives inside the 25-yard line. The Panthers (11-2) advance to face either Wimberley or Sinton in the 4A Division II Region IV finals. Saturday’s regional semifinal between the Texans and Pirates had yet to go final at press time.

U.S. Expected To Distribute 40M Vaccine Doses By Year’s End

U.S. To Test Run COVID Vaccine Distribution This Week

Ford Buys Freezers To Store Pfizer Vaccine For Workers

(Washington, DC) -- The country is on track to distribute 40-million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the year. Operation Warp Speed General Gustave Perna said an initial shipment of six-point-eight-million doses could be delivered to states as early as December 12th. However, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar says most Americans won’t have access to a vaccine until sometime between April and June of next year. That’s due to first responders and high-risk patients taking priority.

(Washington, DC) -- The government is getting a jump on coronavirus vaccine distribution by holding a practice run this week. Shipments will be sent to state health departments, though they won’t have any actual vials. The goal is to ensure everything goes smoothly as Pfizer awaits emergency approval. The FDA is meeting December 10th and doses could be available right after. In fact, the Health and Human Services Secretary believes the vaccine could go out to all 64 jurisdictions within 24 hours of authorization.

Joni Ernst Urges Dept Of Defense To COVID Test Members

(Washington, DC) -- Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa is urging the Department of Defense to conduct widespread COVID testing of its members. She was joined by Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina in authoring a letter to the department last week. They called for the department to use rapid antigen testing on military members, their families, civilian employees and contractors to detect asymptomatic carriers of the virus. They said it would help ensure military readiness.

(Detroit, MI) -- Ford is taking steps to make sure its workers are protected from coronavirus. The auto giant bought a dozen specialty freezers to store Pfizer’s vaccine at ultralow temperatures. This will ensure doses stay viable until they’re approved and distributed. Several states and hospitals have also secured freezers. The FDA will consider Pfizer’s vaccine for emergency use on December 10th. Other leading vaccine candidates don’t require extreme cold storage.
