SSLGC celebrates 25th anniversary with special event Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The cities of Seguin and Schertz are coming together to celebrate a major milestone for their joint water project. The Schertz-Seguin Local Government Corporation was created 25 years ago. A special reception honoring the corporation, and the water that it brought to both communities, will be held on Friday in Seguin. Jack Hamlett was Seguin’s city manager when the corporation was formed, and he was instrumental to its development. Hamlett would go on to serve as city manager in some other Texas cities, but he has since retired and returned to Seguin. He is now the chairman of the water corporation board that he helped to start a quarter of a century ago. Hamlett says the SSLGC blazed the trail and created a model for other communities to follow when it comes to developing new sources of drinking water. “We were one of the first to do something like this. I think, as somebody said, there was no template for us to follow. These two cities joined together and fortunately the (city) councils from those two cities had the foresight to get this going. We were able to bring them together and create this corporation,” said Hamlett. There has been massive growth and expansion in the Schertz and Seguin areas. It would be hard to

overstate the SSLGC’s contributions towards that growth. Hamlett says it really was a groundbreaking idea, and it led to the creation of a resource that will serve those communities, and many others for years to come. He says the water project shows just how important these kinds of collaborative efforts can be for municipalities across the state. “I think this was the first time the two cities had ever really done anything together. We’ve both been in, kind of, different parts of the county. A lot of things have happened since then, and the cities continue to cooperate. But it was a significant milestone for those two city councils to not only see the need for the water for themselves, but to see the benefit of these two cities coming together and making this project happen,” said Hamlett. It took just a couple of years for the corporation to get the infrastructure built that would allow the water to start flowing from its wells in Gonzales County. Since that time, the corporation has continued to grow its presence over the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer. SSLGC General Manager Andrew McBride says it’s important to recognize this 25-year milestone for the corporation, but he says they also want people to know that they also are keeping an eye on the future water needs of this region. Missing Houston area man last known to have visited Seguin (Seguin) – Seguin and Guadalupe County is being asked to be on the lookout for a man reported missing from Pecos County. According to the Pecos County Sheriff ’s Office, Justin Urrutia, 41, went missing from Seguin on Nov. 6, 2023. Justin lives in Sugar Land, Texas but had traveled to Seguin. The Pecos County Sheriff ’s Office believe Urrutia went missing near the 325-mile marker off of I-10. They say the search has continued but with no sign of Urrutia. An extensive search of the rugged terrain by way of helicopter, drone,

UTV and foot search has continued weather permitting since his disappearance. Pecos County Sheriff Perkins says during the course of their

search, his investigators have been assisted by the DPS Aircraft Division out of Alpine, Texas Rangers, DPS CID, Texas Parks and Wildlife, along with private and local rancher and landowners Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lasater, as well as Continental Helicopters Inc., Kenn Kothman. Sheriff Perkins adds that the Pecos County Sheriff ’s Office and Urrutia’s family only want to locate him and be assured of his well-being. Anyone with any information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Pecos County Sheriff ’s Office at (432) 336-3521.

SSLGC, continued. “Our goal is – yes, not just the day-today operations. We’ve got to have water there on a consistent basis. But we really are planning out, you know, five to 10 to 15-to-25-year projections out, and really – as associated with the state -- we are looking at a 50-year water plan,” said McBride. The community is invited to celebrate the success and longevity of the SSLGC’s water project. Hamlett says a special reception will be held on Friday at the SSLGC office in downtown Seguin. “On December 1, Friday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00, we’re going to have a reception at the corporation offices. It’s just to recognize that we are reaching a milestone. (It is) 25 years since this corporation was created. It has not only been successful but has also continued to grow and provide the water resource for our two communities,” said Hamlett. Again, that public reception will run from 3 to 5 p.m. at the SSLGC office, located at the northwest corner of Mountain and Austin streets across from the Aumont Building. The SSLGC is a local government corporation that is jointly owned by the cities of Seguin and Schertz. It not only provides water to those communities, but it also sells water to many other water providers in the area.

The Seguin Daily News each day this week will feature one of the seven properties listed on this year’s 30th annual Holiday Heritage Tour of Homes. The event being hosted by the Seguin Conservation Society will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. Tickets are $20 pre-sale or $25 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet or at the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Meservey Group: Jennifer & Rob Meservey, 520 N. River

Built in 1930, and previously owned by the Saegert and Stoffel families, local accountants Robert and Jennifer Meservey have purchased and renovated the historical home located at 520 N River Street. While previously a residence, the Meserveys have transformed this location into their professional accounting office from which they own and operate The Meservey Group, Certified Public Accountants. After hiring local contractor and home builder, Mark Wheelington, the Meserveys began to create a plan for the renovation and modernization of this home. “We knew the major projects that needed to be accomplished and worked backward from there”, says Jennifer Meservey, who spearheaded this project. First came upgrading the plumbing and electrical systems, since commercial compliance codes are different than residential compliance codes, and next came asbestos abatement, which, unfortunately, comes along with renovating a structure of this age. “We may or may not have come across glass fuses during the electrical rework”, says Robert, also noting that he had not seen glass fuses in person before but only in reference material. During that time a new HVAC system and Water-Filtration system were installed by local professionals. Second came gutting the kitchen and a half-bathroom, and removing an attached closet off of one of the bedrooms. Luckily, they were able to accomplish two goals with these transformations by upgrading the half-bath to ADA compliance and creating an additional exit for fire code compliance. The third part of the project was new paint and wall texture and the installation of recessed lighting, ceiling fans, and window frames around newly uncovered windows, along with new sinks and fixtures in the bathrooms. The final phase was new slate tile and cabinetry in the kitchen along with a beautiful farm-house style sink, and pouring a parking lot to accommodate clients of the Meservey’s CPA firm. After putting in a purchase offer on the property in December 2021 to finally moving their CPA firm from its previous location in Downtown Seguin in November

2022, the Meserveys celebrated the near completion of this year-long project. But, even after the move, the work on this property was not quite complete. Since November of 2022, the Meserveys have added rugs, shudders, and furnishings to help give their space a more comfortable ambiance. Most of the artwork in the building are photographs of landmarks and landscapes exclusively from around the State of Texas. Additionally, several vintage tax returns, which were discovered during the move, have been framed and displayed in the office and range from 1929 to 1934. All have been presented with permission from surviving family members. The landscaping was finally completed in late summer of 2023 with financial assistance from the BIG grant, facilitated by the City of Seguin and Main Street Program. And, the final addition was “Chance” the Squirrel, which is a fixture on the Seguin Painted Squirrel Trail orchestrated by the Seguin Arts Commission, and was unveiled in October 2023. The Meserveys are beyond excited to invite the community into this building for the Seguin Conservation Society’s Tour of Homes and hope that everyone can appreciate the time and effort that went into restoring this property while trying to maintain its historical charm and character. While this property has been on the Home Tour in the past, they are hoping that new life has been breathed into this old house and that many generations to come will continue to enjoy its charm. The Meserveys would like to extend thanks to the following professionals who helped make this dream a reality: Mark Wheelington with Wheelington Construction, Torres Electric, McCall Plumbing, Joe Cools Heating & A/C, San Antonio Water Solutions, GC Floors, Keepers Interiors, Cummins Stripe-It, Razor’s Edge Painting, EZ’s Landscaping Service, Gunckel Architectural Stoneworks, River City Gutters, Patrick Felty, Jeremy Wallace with the Creation Company, and Shanafelt Automotive for applying the clear coat to the Squirrel.

Life Expectancy Up Slightly (Undated) -- Life expectancy in the U.S. rose slightly in 2022, after two years of decline brought on mainly by COVID-19. CDC data out Wednesday show that life expectancy at birth last year was 77-point-five years, up one-point-one years from 2021. That’s still lower than what it was pre-pandemic, however, 78-point-eight years. Denver Health Medical Team Receives Ebola Vaccine (Denver, CO) -- A Colorado hospital is making history. Some workers at Denver Health are among the first to receive the live Ebola vaccine. There are no known outbreaks of the deadly disease right now, but officials say this is a way to prepare in case of one in the future. The team is part of the Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center - one of only 13 in the country that can treat rare killer infectious diseases like Ebola. Melatonin Sees Heavy Use By Children (Boulder, CO) -- One out of every five children in America under the age of 14 uses melatonin as a sleep aid, according to new research out this month from the University of Colorado Boulder. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the brain that regulates the sleep cycle. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has issued an advisory asking parents to talk with a pediatrician before using the hormone long-term in children. Some products tested last year showed mislabeled products that contained 300-percent more melatonin that listed on the bottle. Side effects of taking too much can include everything from headaches to itchy skin and in extreme cases, irritability and depression. CA Company Hits Milestone In Helping Dogs Live Longer (San Francisco, CA) -- A California company is one step closer to a medical breakthrough to extend the life of man’s best friend. Researchers created a drug called Loyal that they hope will help dogs live longer, and they just hit a new milestone. The FDA sent a letter saying it agrees with the data provided that shows the drug’s effectiveness. Dogs would get a shot or pill every three to six months. Both could be ready by 2026.
