FOOD & TOY DRIVE continued from page 1 Volunteers will be out in front of the station wearing masks and practicing social distancing all while collecting items from your vehicles between 7 and 9 a.m. Friday. Lobby doors to the radio station will also be open until 2 p.m. that day so that people can safely drop off donations on their own. Again, while it might not be the same big festive gathering that we’ve seen in the past, it will still be the largest community wide effort designed to collect toys and food for those who need it this holiday season. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped add names to the list of those needing help this year. Many, right now, are finding themselves without a job, maybe
have experienced a decrease in hours or are still struggling to catch up with their bills after being quarantined at home earlier this year. KWED also understands the challenges that the food pantry and the police department are currently having in collecting items. Due to the pandemic, many fundraisers were forced to cancel and group meetings in which members would have been encouraged to bring a food or toy donation did not happen. To help reduce the chances of exposure, the radio station will not be inviting the Seguin High School or Navarro High School Band as it has ever since the drive first started. Every year, these two groups of talented students have provided holiday music adding to the festivities of that first Friday in December.
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2, 2020
Now, those who will be on hand for the annual drive include several community VIPs. Among those invited to join us again are the Seguin Police Department, the Seguin Fire/EMS Department, Guadalupe County, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, the Seguin ISD, the Navarro ISD, Texas Lutheran University and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce. As for the donations, toys are especially important this year as Blue Santa is prepping for an increase in applications. Hope Vasquez, of the Seguin Police Department, says the need for gifts is especially great for the older kids ages 10 to 12. Gift suggestions include Legos, board games, handheld games, purses, footballs, basketballs, slime and jewelry making kits and hair accessories. Gifts for infants and toddlers are also
especially encouraged. Suggestions include blankets, bottles, plush toys, blocks and learning games. Donation ideas for the Christian Cupboard include items such as canned meats, soups, pastas, peanut butter and jelly and canned fruits and vegetables. The cupboard is also in need of laundry detergent, toiletries, and recyclable grocery bags. Of course, cash and checks are always accepted as they both allow groups to purchase exactly what they need. The KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive again is scheduled for Friday between 7 and 9 a.m. Donations can also be dropped off in advance in the radio station lobby. The lobby will be open today through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The radio station is located at 609 E. Court St.

Luckily, Bargfrede says many of the traditional events hosted at Buck Fever are still being planned. She says the group is even adding something new to its Thursday line-up. “We are still having our 30-gun raffle. We are still having the bucket drop raffles. We are still having our horns contest. We are having the presentation by Gator Country on Wednesday evening and that’s being sponsored by GVEC. We will be having the fish tank. We’ve been doing a scavenger hunt for the past few years. This year, we are doing it a little bit differently. It’s going to be a photo scavenger hunt for some prizes. On Thursday, we are adding something. We are going to have Country music singer Gabe Garcia. He was the finalist several years ago on Nashville Star and he’s going to be entertaining folks in the Coliseum. We’ve never had an entertainer before, but we thought it might be a nice idea to bring someone in and just change things up a little bit. Also, it’s our 35th anniversary, something a little special to add to the 35th year,” said Bargfrede. Bargfrede says their hope is that people will jot down next week’s event on their
