Movie Holiday Night set for tonight at Matador Stadium

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- You're invited to snuggle up as a family for some Matador Christmas magic. The Seguin High School Junior Class will be hosting a holiday favorite on the big screen tonight at Matador Stadium. Class Reporter Mariah Castilleja says the featured film welcomes one of our favorite holiday characters. "The holiday movie is going to be Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Stole Christmas. The admission's fee will be $5 and 3 and under get in free. There will be concessions," said Castilleja. Treasurer Kavon Mouton says creating those holiday memories is what the event is all about. "The movie night is set to be from 6 to 8 (p.m.) but we are not playing the movie that whole entire movie as the movie is only an hour and a half. So from the time that the movie is not playing, we are offering a concession stand and we are offering a photo opp where people-- they can come and take a photo with the

Grinch for $1 and so while all that is going on, we are going to have decorations all around -- trying to bring up the ambience of the whole event," said Mouton. Class President Danielle Nyame, says the group is excited to have come up with this idea as one of its fundraisers. "This is actually our first year of doing this. We decided as a junior class in whole that we wanted to do a more community targeted event to kind of gain more inclusivity and more togetherness in our community so we decided to do the holiday movie night," said Nyame. Secretary Aedus Tobias says even for students, The Grinch topped the list as one of their favorites. "We think that this will bring excitement to the community because this is a family favorite. Everybody would want to come and watch the movie and our class voted on this one from all the other movies that we had put on from the poll that

we did," said Tobias. Class VP Gabriel Perez-Polanco says the class is encouraging folks to bring their blankets and pillows for an exciting night on the field. "The movie is going to be on the football field but they are not going to be able to eat on the football field but they are going to be able to eat in the stands," said Perez-Polanco. Nyame reminds the community that Tuesday's evening movie is a school fundraiser and looks forward to everyone coming out and having a great time. "Honestly, I know from personal experience as well, I think this is going to be a great turnout and generally will bring the Seguin ISD and the Seguin community together. Overall, we generally do just want to create a fun and enjoyable night for all and we truly believe that this event alone will do just that," said Nyame. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. Matador Stadium is located at 1315 E. Cedar St.

Sandra Day O’Connor Dead (Undated) -- Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is dead at the age of 93. The Supreme Court said O’Connor’s cause of death was related to complications from advanced dementia and a respiratory illness. O’Connor was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court and was appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1981. She was a key swing vote in many cases. O’Connor wrote several books after her retirement, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama in 2009. She also had a law school re-named after her at Arizona State University. Fauci To Testify Before Congress (Washington, DC) -- Former White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci is set to testify before Congress early next year on the origins of COVID and the U.S. pandemic response. Fauci will appear in Congress for a two-day transcribed interview on January 8th and 9th, giving seven hours of testimony per day in the private session. He must also testify at a public hearing sometime later in 2024. It marks the first time Fauci has testified since he retired. Gun Suicide Rates Hit High In 2022 (Undated) -- Gun suicides are at unprecedented high rates. Data from the CDC found that of the nearly 50-thousand overall suicide deaths in 2022, about half of them were gun-related. The analysis also found that the annual U.S. firearm suicide rate increased by nearly elevenpercent from 2019 to 2022, which is the highest documented level since at least 1968. The pandemic was listed as a potential cause for overall increases, since it “exacerbated known risk factors” including substance use, relationship stressors and social isolation. Utilities Must Replace Lead Drinking Water Pipes Within A Decade (Washington, DC) -- Utilities will need to replace lead drinking water pipes within a decade under a new proposed rule from the Environmental Protection Agency. The lead and copper proposal would require utilities to replace the lines regardless of the lead levels registered in water samples. That’s designed to prevent future public health crises around drinking water such as what happened in Flint, Michigan in 2014. A doctor in Flint called it a “game changer” in a statement. The EPA is aiming to have a final version of the rule by next fall.
